Distrib Films Us Acquires Studiocanal’s ‘One Nation, One King’ (Exclusive)
Un peuple et son roi (2018)
New York-based Distrib Films Us has acquired three films from Studiocanal, including “One Nation, One King,” Pierre Schoeller’s sprawling movie about the French Revolution, which world premiered out of competition at last year’s Venice Film Festival.

“One Nation, One King” is headlined by a strong French cast, including Gaspard Ulliel, Adele Haenel, Olivier Gourmet, Louis Garrel, Niels Schneider and Denis Lavant. The big-budget film unfolds in 1789 Paris and is told from the perspectives of revolutionaries.

Produced by Denis Freyd at Archipel 35 (“The Kid With a Bike”), “One Nation, One King” follows Françoise, a young washerwoman, and Basile, a drifter, who begin to fulfill a dream of emancipation in the newly formed assembly where they witness the creation of a new political system along with the working-class people of Paris.

Distrib Films Us will release “One Nation, One King” in the U.S., along with two more Studiocanal films,...

Film Review: ‘One Nation, One King’
Un peuple et son roi (2018)
It’s impossible to imagine a more ploddingly old-fashioned account of the French Revolution than “One Nation, One King,” a film desperate to capture the atmosphere of the time yet unable to operate outside the most formulaic depiction of momentous incidents. Trapped between a history buff’s slavish desire to be true to events and a generic sense of how to make those events “cinematic,” director-writer Pierre Schoeller (“The Minister”) seems uncertain whether he wants to deliver a history lesson or a “Les Mis”-like musical, winding up with a stultifying two-hour epic more appealing to lazy high school teachers instead of cinema audiences seeking either entertainment or intellectual engagement. French box office was dismal following an autumn release, racking up a mere $2.5 million for a feature that reportedly cost around $19 million.

Perhaps Schoeller got too caught up in the excitement of his subject, understandably overwhelmed by the scope of...

‘One Nation, One King’ Trailer: Adèle Haenel Leads A French Revolution
The 75th Venezia International Film Festival is here, and it’s no surprise that Adèle Haenel will be making an appearance. Quickly becoming France’s sweetheart and with ever-growing international attention, Haenel will be starring in the French picture “One Nation, One King” – “Un Peuple et son Roi.”

Though the film is rolling out-of-competition for #Venezia75, it’s nothing to worry about for this award-winning actress. Her debut in 2007 with Céline Sciamma’s “Water Lillies” nominated Haenel for a Cesar Award and since then, Haenel has been nominated 4 more times and won twice.

Unfolding in 1789 Paris, “One Nation, One King” is told from the perspectives of revolutionaries and is headlined by a strong French cast including Gaspard Ulliel, Adèle Haenel and Louis Garrel. The film follows Françoise, a young washerwoman, and Basile, a drifter, who begin to fulfill a dream of emancipation in the newly formed assembly where they witness the creation of a new political system along with the working-class people of Paris.

Since introducing “One Nation, One King” to buyers at Berlin and at Cannes, Studiocanal has pre-sold the $20 million film to Spain (A Contracorriente), Japan (Kino Film), South Korea (Playlist), China (Shangai Jushi), Hong Kong (Edko), Greece (Seven), Portugal (Lusomundo), Benelux (Athena...
