After a weekend when “Mindhunter” was the buzz of TV fandom, TNT is throwing its hat into the serial killer drama ring with “The Alienist.” The network has released their latest look at their newest series (well, as long as you’re not counting the promos during the weekend’s baseball playoff games) and it seems as sumptuous as it is unsettling.

Daniel Bruhl, Dakota Fanning, and Luke Evans star in the 1890s-set New York story about the fledgling work of criminal psychology in the big city. Bruhl stars as Laszlo Kreizler, a psychologist, who teams with a local newspaper employee (Evans) and a police secretary (Fanning) who begin to conduct some covert operations to catch the perpetrator behind a series of grisly killings. (And remember, the important question isn’t “what” or “who,” but “Why.”)

Last month, Neill Blomkamp premiered a new short film Zygote through its experimental features from Oats Studios. The fan community definitely wanted more.

The story for Zygote is fairly simple about two survivors in the near future at an underground mining facility--trapped with this hideous, most terrifying monster made out of human limbs. As a cross with The Thing and Alien, it is a face-paced, heart-pounding twenty-two minutes of non-stop action.

The short film stars Dakota Fanning and Jose Pablo Cantillo.

Lrm caught up with Jose Pablo Cantillo last month about this short film project. He discussed with us over the phone about Neill Blomkamp’s approach, direction and set design to creating this project.

Neill Blomkamp (District 9) has completed a number of shorts as of late. Out of his new Vancouver based studio, Blomkamp has delivered: "The Escape," "Rakka," "Firebase," and now "Zygote." "Zygote" stars Jose Pablo Cantillo and Dakota Fanning. Characters are trying to survive on a remote base, with a deadly creature. The short film is visually stunning. And, everyone with a set of eyeballs should view it. The entire short, from Oats Studios, is hosted here. The story involves an Arctic mine. Two survivors fight for their lives, while evading a "new kind of terror!" Horror fans can see that terror, in the short below. It is made of several victims. Their eyeballs and arms have been amalgamated, in order to absorb even more survivors. Showing the continuing development of Computer Generated Imagery, the monster looks unusually life-like. Viewers should turn down the lights, while turning up the volume, to fully enjoy "Zygote.

Director Neill Blomkamp is going to push the edge on storytelling with amazing visual effects with his experimental short films.

With his Vancouver-based Oats Studios in its infancy stage, the studio has launched a series of initial short films to let the online audience give feedback and critique the company’s work. Online audiences can provide feedback through YouTube, Steam and even on Twitter. It will help Blomkamp and Oats Studios to determine the production of future filmmaking.

Zygote has been released this week which stars Dakota Fanning (War of the Worlds) and Jose Pablo Cantillo (Taken). The short film follows two survivors at an arctic mining station trying to survive against this alien/zombie-like creature made from the human limbs. The feel of the short film is like a cross between The Thing and Alien.

Neill Blomkamp wasn’t kidding about Oats Studios. After releasing the short alien thriller “Rakka” starring Sigourney Weaver and the alternate-history Vietnam War drama “Firebase” last month, the “District 9” director has just premiered “Zygote.” Dakota Fanning stars in the 23-minute sci-fi short, another in-house production from his new studio based in Vancouver. According to a Verge interview, “Zygote” was born of a simple idea Blomkamp had while en route from Vancouver to Toronto on a plane: “a monster made out of men.” That’s what Fanning has to contend with in his “The Thing”–inflected short, which carries a brief but evocative premise: “Stranded in an Arctic mine, two lone survivors are forced to fight for their lives, evading and hiding from a new kind of terror.”

Oats Studios has released its latest short film, a super creepy sci-fi venture from director Neill Blomkamp called Zygote. This one stars Dakota Fanning and Jose Pablo Cantillo and is something of a cross between Alien and The Thing, as Fanning’s character is at a remote outpost in the Arctic struggling to survive against a genetically modified monster who has already killed (and assimilated) almost everyone there. "It's coming no matter what we do!" Buckle up, you're in for a crazy ride. These films are getting better and better! Oats Studios has unveiled their next new short film, titled Zygote, an intense horror action story starring Dakota Fanning and Jose Pablo Cantillo. This is perhaps the most cinematic film that Oats has released yet. Directed by the main man himself, Neill Blomkamp, this film features one helluva gnarly monster that appears halfway through. I also love the score, by Lorne Balfe, which makes this feel even more intense. At the bottom of the post, I've included a few answers from Blomkamp to follow-up questions after my first interview about Oats. It's so awesome to see them experimenting with projects like this that would never ever see the light of day in Hollywood, but now we get a chance to experience them. Get ready! Neill Blomkamp has released his third short film from his Oats Studios project. It's called God: Serengeti and it stars Sharlto Copley (District 9, Elysium, Chappie) in the role of God. It's more of a comedic type story about God and his servant playing with the early inhabitants of Earth. This is the shortest film in the series that has been released so far as it runs almost 4-minutes long. It's a great short that I think you'll enjoy!
