Marriage of Convenience

7/10

An effective early entry.

I disagree that this is a poor film. In my opinion, "Marriage of Convenience" is one of the stronger "Edgar Wallace" films. Harry H. Corbett is well cast as the customary police officer, although I wasn't so convinced by John Cairney being cast as the villain. The story is quite routine but still watchable. Even so, the pace is good, there's a bit of incident and it's a black and white British film!

What did 'Arold Do Before Steptoe?

He played a Scottish detective with a determination Toni succeed. Some interesting location photography plus a flashy style adumbrating his later work by director Clive Donner make this an interesting watch.

Not one of their better efforts

The problem with this film is that so much of the film borders on the absurd. It start when an escorted but handcuffed convict is able to beat off his wardens jump down two flights of stairs and make his escape on a nearby scooter.Despite being on the run he is very conspicuous in his various disguises. The conclusion is not difficult to imagine, and comes not a moment too soon.

OK Edgar Wallace Mystery

I'm inserting reviews for films that currently lack one, so here is the note I made when I viewed this effort in 2009... 'E.Wallace thriller, this one has a man escape from prison on an outing, to a set up marriage, it passes an hour OK.' The good news is that there are more informative reviews on this title on IMDb, as this along with many of the E.Wallace series of films made in the UK late 50's/early 60's are listed, but as episodes of a TV series, as it was in this form that they were shown in the USA. I am transferring my viewing record from the TV listing, to the Film listing, as these titles were made and distributed as 2nd feature films in the UK. Possibly some clever person at IMDb can merge the records?
