MGM+ is giving TV viewers a rip-roaring adventure with Hotel Cocaine, its new series which focuses on Miami's infamous Mutiny Hotel and the drug game that flowed through it. The show dramatizes the story of Roman Compte, the hotel's general manager, who just wanted to provide a great life for his family in the loud, brash Miami of the 1970s. However, he was pulled into something with life-and-death stakes with the rise of cocaine.
Hotel Cocaine is created and executive produced by Chris Brancato, who also created the MGM+ crime epic Godfather of Harlem. Executive producing alongside Brancato is Guillermo Navarro, who directed the pilot episode after helming Lifetime's Cocaine Godmother, which starred Catherine Zeta-Jones as Griselda Blanco. These two men know how to tell great stories in the world of drugs and violence, and spoke to Cbr ahead of the Hotel Cocaine premiere to discuss why this one was worth telling.

Sofia Vergara Says ‘Cocaine Godmother’ Contributed To Divorce
In early 2022, Sofia Vergara took on a very different role than she is used to. Instead of her usual lightweight comedic roles, she played a mafia queen in Griselda. In the movie, she played Griselda Blanco, a real-life Colombian drug dealer known as the Cocaine Godmother who operated in Miami from the 1970s through the early 2000s.

Most remember Griselda Blanco as the “Black Widow,” a ruthless Colombian drug lord whose network flooded Miami with cocaine, brought in $80 million a month nationally, and who’s been personally implicated in a rumored 200 murders. Michael Corleone Blanco, her youngest son raised at the height of her drug-trafficking empire, admits she was a rigid, stern woman he affectionately called cariñosa — an endearing term given to loved ones.
“As a kid, you can’t really comprehend what is wrong, what is right, and what is the family business,” Blanco tells Rolling Stone.

Sofía Vergara's portrayal of Griselda Blanco in Netflix's "Griselda" was a hit with audiences and critics, earning 20.6 million views and an average 87% Rotten Tomatoes score. Catherine Zeta-Jones played Griselda Blanco in Lifetime's "Cocaine Godmother," but received negative criticism for her performance, with audiences faulting her dodgy accent and over-the-top portrayal. "Cocaine Godmother" and "Griselda" differed in how they told Blanco's life story, with "Griselda" focusing on intricate details while "Cocaine Godmother" took a more sweeping approach. The TV movie also included speculative events that the Netflix series left out.
More than half a decade before Sofía Vergara played the drug queenpin in the biographical crime miniseries Griselda, another Netflix star actress played the part of Griselda Blanco first. Vergara, best known for her role as Gloria in the sitcom Modern Family, became somewhat of a streaming sensation on Netflix for her title role, in which she depicted Blanco's infamous true-to-life story.

Sofia Vergara and Netflix are at the center of a new lawsuit filed by late Griselda Blanco’s children over upcoming limited true crime series “Griselda.”
Lead star and executive producer Vergara is named in the suit that alleges the series uses Blanco’s family’s images and likenesses without proper authorization. TMZ first reported the legal filing. IndieWire has reached out to Vergara’s representatives and Netflix for comment.
Vergara responded to the pending legal claim in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, saying of playing Blanco, “I’m trying to understand her from the beginning. I started from being fascinated by her, because she achieved many things that it was impossible for a woman to achieve, even though they were horrific.”
“Griselda” creator Eric Newman added, “It’s not my first rodeo. The Escobar family made similar claims [for the TV series ‘Narcos’]. We had a very specific story we wanted to tell. I believe we told it,...

You didn't think Netflix controversies were limited to unexpected Oscar contenders with disputed real-world allegations or, say, a horrendously misguided attempt at a "Squid Game"-based reality show spinoff, did you? It's anyone's guess whether the streamer is purposefully courting headline-grabbing projects or has simply found itself on an unfortunate sleazy streak through no fault of its own. Either way, buckle up because the ride's not over just yet.
It's always a tricky thing to dramatize historical events and actual people for mass entertainment -- particularly when they involve the criminal world. Netflix's next buzzy title, the upcoming Sofia Vergara-starring series "Griselda" that tells the story of Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco and her rise to power, has all the hallmarks of becoming the next big hit: an A-list name attached in the lead role, a practically made-for-tv backstory that needs to be seen to be believed, and all...

Hollywood likes to pretend that it’s in a constant state of self-improvement, and that the days of blackface and Mickey Rooney as Mr. Yunioshi are far in the past. But we aren’t that far removed from Zoe Saldaña playing Nina Simone, FX casting a white British actor as a budding Middle Eastern despot in Tyrant or Catherine Zeta-Jones playing notorious Colombian drug kingpin Griselda Blanco in Lifetime’s Cocaine Godmother.
I hope we can all agree that whatever divine and legal sanctions she deserved for being, by all accounts, quite monstrous at times, Griselda Blanco did not deserve the throughly bizarro accent and makeup job that accompanied Zeta-Jones’ performance in Cocaine Godmother.
If nothing else, Netflix’s six-part Griselda is an adequate representational corrective. Colombian actress Sofía Vergara plays Blanco, with a latex job that doesn’t really make her look like Griselda Blanco, but definitely makes her look like “Not Sofía Vergara.

Sex Education Season 4 sees Otis and Maeve realize they need to move on from each other, Eric's story in Season 4 focuses on self-acceptance as he finds his calling as a pastor, wanting to help lost kids like himself. Most of the Sex Education characters get happy endings, proving that, with a little help, people can become their best selves.
The following contains major spoilers for Season 4 of Sex Education, now streaming on Netflix.
When Netflix first launched Sex Education, many thought it was an American Pie ripoff with horny teens trying to hook up at Moordale Secondary School. However, the series was way more nuanced, dealing with sexuality, adolescence and modern arcs that teens today face in their coming-of-age stories. Gender fluidity, identity and LGBTQ issues were all addressed, giving Asa Butterfield's Otis a lot to handle as he dealt with acting as the school's sex therapist.

Lopez is set to star in and produce the script by “The Sopranos” and “The Wolf of Wall Street” scribe Terence Winter and “Deadwood” writer Regina Corrado. Sources close to the production say Lopez is seriously eyeing the project as her directorial debut.
Based on a true story, “The Godmother” chronicles the incredible rise-and-fall of Griselda “La Madrina” Blanco, who outsmarted and hustled the men around her to rise from an impoverished childhood in Colombia to become one of the world’s biggest drug lords. Blanco was reportedly worth more than $2 billion, and was a key figurehead in Miami’s ruthless and murderous Cocaine Cowboy Wars.
“I’ve been forever fascinated by the story of Griselda Blanco and jumped at the chance to play her on screen,” said Lopez. “She is...

Guillermo Navarro “wanted to make use of film language to tell the stories” of “Hostile Planet.” The Oscar-winning cinematographer (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) served as an executive producer on this NatGeo documentary series, which takes viewers to some of the world’s harshest terrains and examines the animals who live there. Watch our exclusive video interview with Navarro above.
In most nature documentaries, “the host is the main source of the narrative,” Navarro explains. “Someone is talking to you, driving you through the process.” Though this series is hosted by Bear Grylls, Navarro wanted to “lower the level of the voice-over” and allow the visuals to tell the story.
See Don’t worry, ‘Sharp Objects’ (probably) won’t have a season two after all

“Project Runway” has been stuck on the Emmy runway for far too long.
It’s been nominated for Best Reality-Competition Program consecutively for the 13 years since it debuted on TV, but it’s been forced to step back year after year for winners in that category with slicker production values and heart-swelling songs (“The Voice” won 4 times), etc. Victories by “The Voice” are particularly noteworthy since they occurred over the past 5 years; the last 3 victories were consecutive.
Now “The Voice” seems unstoppable much like “Amazing Race” once outran all rivals in the old days. Over the past 15 years of this category’s existence, those two programs have hogged the winners’ circle with only one exception: “Top Chef” had the secret recipe for a shockeroo in 2010.
But that means more upsets are possible – so the Emmy hopes of “Project Runway” remain alive. It’s already won two Emmys in other categories in the past.

At this year’s Emmys, Lifetime is hoping voters drink up its Best TV Movie contender “Flint,” which chronicles the ongoing water crisis in that poisoned Michigan town. Starring Queen Latifah, who also produced the film, “Flint” tells the story of a local woman named Iza Banks who’s dealing with the town’s lead in the water supply. The Writers Guild Awards already rewarded the project for Barbara Stepansky‘s script based on the Time Magazine cover story “The Poisoning of an American City,” so might the Emmys follow suit?

She’s won an Oscar. She’s won a Tony. Can she now win an Emmy? Catherine Zeta-Jones is on the 2018 Emmy ballot for Lifetime’s telefilm “Cocaine Godmother: The Griselda Blanco Story,” in which she portrays a real-life drug dealer in the trafficking industry. A year ago the idea of Zeta-Jones coming to television seemed far-fetched, but then she took on the iconic role of Olivia de Havilland in Ryan Murphy‘s “Feud: Bette and Joan.” Zeta-Jones didn’t earn any Emmy love for that project, but might she receive a nomination for “Cocaine Godmother”?
Zeta-Jones prevailed at the Oscars for Best Supporting Actress for “Chicago” (2002), while her Tony came for Best Actress in a Musical for “A Little Night Music” (2010). Should she win an Emmy, she’d join the esteemed triple crown of acting club that includes such legends as Maggie Smith, Jessica Lange and Al Pacino. It...

Peak TV has led to a new golden age for movies on the small screen. This year alone some of those boldfaced names included Al Pacino in “Paterno,” Michael B. Jordan in “Fahrenheit 451” and Catherine Zeta-Jones in “Cocaine Godmother.”
“I don’t think there’s ever been a better time for television. The amount of creativity, diversity, talent — it’s contagious,” says Zeta-Jones.
The Academy Award-winning actress should know. After trying to get a film about ruthless Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco off the ground for years, she finally found a home for it on Lifetime, which, to her surprise, offered her everything she wanted as the project’s headliner.
“I think the joy as an actor is having the ability to work with great people, be passionate about something and to have people see it, which I had in Lifetime,” she says. After that, “good work is good work wherever it is.

These days, with “Narcos” on Netflix and “Loving Pablo” in theaters, South American drug stories are a dime a dozen — or, maybe, 10 bucks a bag — but you’ve never seen one like “Birds of Passage,” a visually stunning and often surprising true story that charts the rise of the Colombian drug business back before Escobar from its unexpected roots, among an indigenous clan in way over their heads. Matching its artistic vision in anthropological value, this fresh take on a familiar genre — told from the point of view of the country’s Wayuu people — marks an ambitious follow up to the Oscar-nominated “Embrace of the Serpent” for helmer Ciro Guerra and his wife, producer Cristina Gallego.

Callister” — but Amazon’s original series, a mirror image of Netflix’s offering, is coming to play, too.
“Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams” earned a bit of chatter for two episodes: “Kill All Others,” written and directed by Dee Rees,...
Still Eligible: Yes. (The series, not the episode/movie.)
Hot Streak: HBO has won more times in this category than all the other networks combined. The premium network has 19 total Emmys. In second place, CBS and NBC are tied — with six wins each.
Fun Fact: There have been four ties in the TV Movie category, but none since 1993.

The triple crown of acting consists of a rarified group of actors who have won an Oscar, Tony and Emmy. So far more than 20 actors have earned this distinction with such legends as Maggie Smith, Jessica Lange and Al Pacino among them. Oscar and Tony champ Catherine Zeta-Jones has recently begun venturing into television, first with her work on “Feud: Bette and Joan” and now with the current TV movie “Cocaine Godmother,” which aired January 20 on Lifetime. Should this telefilm win acclaim and Zeta-Jones receive awards recognition in the form of an Emmy, that would qualify the Welsh actress for inclusion in the Triple Crown of acting club.
Zeta-Jones plays Griselda Blanco in “Cocaine Godmother,” a real-life key drug dealer in the brutal cocaine trafficking industry. This has been a passion project of Zeta-Jones, which she has tried to get made in various forms for years. She won her Oscar...

Of the many issues in Lifetime’s “Cocaine Godmother: The Griselda Blanco Story,” casting white actress Catherine Zeta-Jones to play the real-life Colombian drug lord is one of the most egregious. And in this case, it’s not just lip service when it comes to the need for proper representation. Not casting a Latina actress is a missed opportunity to find someone who could’ve embodied this larger-than-life character because Zeta-Jones simply isn’t up to the task. She’s not just unconvincing; she’s outlandish.
Although the ruthlessness of “The Godfather” was an inspiration for the real-life Blanco, who even named her fourth son Michael Corleone, Zeta-Jones is no Marlon Brando, unless it’s by way of “Grey Gardens.” While she brings a certain theatrical glee to the role, she lacks the necessary menace for a woman who supposedly has the blood of over 200 people on her hands. Zeta-Jones...

“There was no other way than to be preemptive in a story that had to be watched. He did a statement. I think it’s very clear the way that he stands,” Zeta-Jones said. “I cannot elaborate on something that’s so very personal to him.”
Zeta-Jones made it clear she supports both her husband’s denial and the #MeToo anti-harassment movement at large: “My reaction was that as two people who have been in this business — him longer than me — was that we support ‘Me Too’ and the movement more than anybody,...
