Most action-comedies pick a lane, they’re either big and over-the-top action or full of laugh-out-loud absurdity. However, Midnight Runners doesn’t choose. What would a teen sports movie be without (deep breath): family troubles, physical trauma, classifiable disorders, emotional upheavals, demanding coaches, all-important final competitions, fraying romantic relationships, major intra-team drama, secrets, lies, drugs, drinking, partying, out of control ambition, and unchecked competitive spirit? But while all those elements might feel, sound, and look familiar, reoriented within D.W. Waterson’s feature filmmaking debut, they take on fresh power. You may think you know your sports movie tropes, but you’ve never seen them used quite this way — that is, within a queer cheerleading drama firmly focused on complex female characters — and Waterson’s “Backspot” delights in skewing such expectations for often (but not always) new ends.
Featuring “Reservation Dogs” star Devery Jacobs (who also produces the project) in yet another breakout role in a seeming string of them, “Backspot” won’t necessarily surprise its audience, but it will give them a...

Park Seo-joon's character in The Marvels is an ally and friend to Carol Danvers, seemingly debunking theories that he may be her mysterious husband. The possibility of Park Seo-joon's character being just a friend and ally to Carol Danvers allows him to showcase his talent and have a more engaging storyline. The Marvels doesn't need the addition of a marriage subplot to provide substance to the story of the three key superheroes.

Stepping up from a low-budget indie affair straight to a mainstream, commercial effort is no small task, but director Kim Joo-hwan undeniably succeeded with “Midnight Runners.” Dominating the box office upon release (it was the sixth highest grossing film of 2017 in Korea), this buddy cop action comedy strikes an enthralling balance between farcically daft humour and grounded emotion. It may not provoke any attentive self-discussions or chime in with imperative sociopolitical commentary, but with an enthused young cast and plenty of laughs, there are indisputably worse things to do than watch this movie.

Rigorously structured, forcing applicants to shave their heads upon admission and subjecting them to late-night training drills, they steer far from the norm when it comes to methodology. Back in 2014, period adventure comedy “The Pirates” released to much admiration from the public, becoming the third highest grossing feature of the year. Even today, it sits comfortably in the top 30 highest grossing Korean films of all time at the domestic box-office. As a result, conversation of a follow-up had always been on the table, but several reasons, including leading pair Son Ye-jin and Kim Nam-gil’s refusal to return to the high waters, meant that the sequel couldn’t materialise until now, when producers decided to change tracks with an all new director, new characters and cast to bring us “The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure”. After being the first to cross 1 million admissions in Korea this year and to date being the highest grossing Korean production on 2022, it is now streaming worldwide exclusively on Netflix.

Writing the biography of the man best known for marrying traditional Irish music with British punk — a sound once described by concertina player Noel Hill of the band Planxty as a “terrible abortion” of Irish music — was never going to be easy. To further complicate the matter, Shane MacGowan’s hatred of interviews is almost as notorious as his long and sophisticated affair with drugs and alcohol. Such is punk.
When it comes to the story of MacGowan’s life, it has never been about “just the facts.” However, an attempt has now been made.

Lee Byung-hun, Park Seo-joon and Park Bo-young are all confirmed to be starring in “Vanishing Time: A Boy Who Returned” director Uhm Tae-hwa’s new thriller film “Concrete Utopia”.
The film follows the survivors in a city that went to ruins after a massive earthquake destroyed all the concrete.
Lee Byung-hun’s character Young-tak is a leader who works to protect Hwang Goong Apartment from outsiders. Park Seoo-joon will play Min-sung, a salaryman who gets chosen to assist Young-tak and becomes increasingly bold as he encounters crises. Park Bo-young has been cast as Min-sung’s wife and former nurse Myung-hwa, a warm character who cares for those who are hurt in dangerous situations.
Lee Byung-hun currently seems to be on a run of disaster films, has already survived a volcanic disaster in last year’s “Ashfall” and currently mid-production of aviation disaster film “Emergency Declaration” alongside Song Kang-ho and Jeon Do-yeon.

Derek Tsang’s debut film “SoulMate“, starring Zhou Dongyu and Ma Sichun in award-winning roles, was a big hit critically and commercially, so much so that Korean remake of the romantic drama was eventually announced. Now the actors for the central trio of characters, which include two childhood best friends and the man that becomes the object of both their affections, have been finalised, with Kim Da-mi, Jeon So-nee and Byeon Woo-seok all confirmed to be on board.
Kim Da-mi, who was the first to be attached to the project, is coming off the back of her brilliant performance in the K-Drama series “Itaewon Class“, which followed her breakout debut role in Park Hoon-jung’s “The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion“. Jeon So-nee, meanwhile, was last seen in her scene-stealing turn as Mi-na in “Jo Pil-ho: The Dawning Rage” and “Ghost Walk”. Byeon Woo-seok is fairly new to films, having had...

At first though, “Midnight Runners” dials down the hilarity, fixating on an intriguing part of the education system: Police Universities. Rigorously structured, forcing applicants to shave their heads upon admission and subjecting them to late-night training drills, they steer far from the norm when it comes to methodology. Gone are practical, theory-based subjects such as mathematics,...

In 2017, one-film-old director Jason Kim made the buddy-cop action-comedy “Midnight Runners”. Starring Kang Ha-neul and Park Seo-joon in his first on-screen leading role, the anticipation for the film was lukewarm, with its trailers evidently targeting the female audience by showcasing its good-looking leading pair of actors. The film surprised at the box-office and went on to become the 4th highest-grossing film of 2017, freeing Park Seo-joon from the shackles of small screen dramas. While a sequel to the film is rumoured, the next project that both Park Seo-joon and Jason Kim join forces for instead is the supernatural action adventure film “The Divine Fury”.

Leading Korean studio Lotte Entertainment will produce a Korean-language remake of Mexican comedy blockbuster “Instructions Not Included.” The group has partnered with Lionsgate-affiliated Globalgate Entertainment, which is developing local-language versions of the Eugenio Derbez-directed picture.
“In addition to distribution rights, our sales and acquisitions businesses, we also see the growing importance of remake deals and international co-productions,” said Justin Choi, Gm of Lotte’s international marketing and distribution department. “The demand is growing.”
After a couple of years in a slump, Lotte has returned to the forefront of Korean cinema, propelled by the sensational pan-Asian success of “Along With the Gods: The Two Words” in 2017. Its simultaneously produced sequel, “Along With the Gods: The Last 49 Days,” was also huge hit this year. It earned $90.8 million in Korea alone.
