Australian swimmer Emma McKeon became the first female swimmer - and second woman in any sport - to claim seven medals at one Olympics. Four of them were gold, the other three bronze.
Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the event was postponed to 2021 in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the first such instance in the history of the Olympic Games (previous games had been cancelled but not rescheduled). However, the event retains the Tokyo 2020 name for marketing and branding purposes.
The Games were held largely behind closed doors with no public spectators permitted due to the declaration of a state of emergency.
Russia competed in the event with the name ROC (Russian Olympic Committee) and they were unable to use its flag, nor its anthem. This is due to the fact that Russia was sanctioned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after it was accused of running a state-backed doping program.
United States topped the medal tally with 39 Golds, 41 Silvers and 33 Bronze.
