There’s a tried-and-true aphorism in Hollywood that ‘There’s no one way to break in.’ Even though TV writing seems to have one of the more straightforward paths – Pa, Script Coordinator, Writers’ Assistant, Staff Writer, Success????- the saying still applies.
Take Episodic Writing Lab Fellow Hank Jones for example. Sure, he got a break working as a Pa on The Game, but that wasn’t the end of his journey. The Will Trent writer made his own projects, applied to labs, and worked writing for animation before moving over to live action.
And of course, he was a part of Film Independent’s Episodic Writing Labs. The lab gave him the opportunity to hone his craft, practice pitching, and build a community with his fellow writers.
We spoke with him earlier this month about his journey, and what he would say to aspiring TV writers.

A Max original, The Pitt is a medical drama that chronicles one 15-hour shift in the emergency room of the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital. Gritty and authentic, each episode in the show covers a single hour of the shift beginning at seven in the morning. With medical students and interns in tow on their very first day, Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle), the show’s senior attending, navigates the organized chaos that’s become synonymous with working in the ER.
A realistic representation of medical personnel on the frontlines, the series isn’t made for those with a queasy stomach. At any given moment, viewers could witness a simple flesh wound or the inside of someone’s chest cavity. It is an ER after all. Given the scope of the series, The Pitt has an extensive cast, which audiences might recognize from other television shows and movies. Below are the...

‘The Fire Inside’ Star Ryan Destiny Says Playing Boxer Claressa Shields Changed Her ‘For the Better’
Ryan Destiny said her role playing iconic female boxer Claressa “T-Rex” Shields in “The Fire Inside” helped her develop a new level of trust in herself as an actress.
“I think I found a lot of trust in myself. Obviously, a lot of different levels of discipline that I don’t think I’ve had to use before,” Destiny told TheWrap. “I knew that this film would challenge me in a way that scared me, but I used that fear to my advantage in a lot of ways. I just wanted it so bad, and I knew that I could execute it, and I knew that it would be something that was so different than what anyone’s ever seen me in. Other people couldn’t see it, but I could see it in myself.”
She added that “the entire journey itself has just put a lot more confidence in myself,...

The ascent from starring on a hit television show to booking the lead in a buzzy film has become increasingly common with this new class of movie stars. But where things went drastically different for actress Ryan Destiny is that her Independent Spirit Award-nominated performance in boxing biopic “The Fire Inside” was five years in the making—delayed by a global pandemic, the film going into turnaround, a new studio picking it up, and her primary scene partner being recast.
Speaking to IndieWire over Zoom about her turn in Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rachel Morrison’s directorial debut as Olympic champion boxer Claressa Shields, the only American in her sport to win back-to-back gold medals, Destiny said “I definitely didn’t think I would get it. Because I knew it was so competitive. Something like this, a project like this, especially with Barry Jenkins attached and Rachel attached, and the studio at that time,...

The Boys will end its run with season 5, but that's not even close to being the most exciting upcoming project in its shared cinematic universe on Prime Video. The Boys started out as a satire of the sprawling superhero franchises owned by Marvel and DC; it even has a scene in which Vought Studios overextends itself by announcing multiple phases’ worth of sequels and spin-offs all at once. But in the last couple of years, in response to its runaway success, The Boys has become the very thing it was spoofing.
Since The Boys has become the jewel in the Amazon crown, the megacorporation — which is suspiciously similar to the franchise’s corporate big bad, Vought International — is refusing to let it die. The Boys has several spin-offs already on the air and has even more in development, like a show set in Mexico with the working title The Boys: Mexico.

Learning to take and throw a punch is one thing, but changing your whole physique to better emulate one of the most awarded athletes in the sport of boxing is a different task entirely. For Ryan Destiny, originally an R&b singer turned actress on shows like “Star” and “Grown-ish,” becoming two-time Olympic gold medalist Claressa “T-Rex” Shields in Rachel Morrison’s “The Fire Inside” was unlike any challenge she’d faced before.
“It was a lot. It was really, really exhausting, but in a good way,” Destiny said to the Los Angeles Times in a recent interview. “Because I have never pushed myself that way ever in my life before. Especially not physically. So to see my body transform from day one until actually starting was so crazy to me because I didn’t know my body could do those things that it was doing. And I built my...

Sketch comedy aficionado Druski has built a brand around the notion of “could have.” There’s Coulda Been Records, the parody talent-scouting show he started on Instagram Live during the pandemic; the Coulda Been House YouTube reality web series it spawned — which premiered in February with guest stars Snoop Dogg and Chris Brown; and Coulda Fest, his 17,000-person sold-out comedy and music festival held at State Farm Arena in Atlanta in September. But in real life, the comedian, born Drew Desbordes, doesn’t believe in what could have been.
“Nothing is a mistake,” says Druski. “Everything happens for a reason. My whole life is like that.”
Such has been the case for the 30-year-old who has amassed a following of more than 15 million across TikTok and Instagram with his hilariously relatable skits portraying everything from airport debacles to relationship squabbles and athletic fanaticism — the latter of which led to him...

Warner Bros. TV has responded to a lawsuit filed Tuesday by Michael Crichton‘s widow, calling the legal move “baseless” and arguing that the studio’s upcoming medical procedural “The Pitt” is very different from “ER.”
“The lawsuit filed by the Crichton Estate is baseless, as ‘The Pitt’ is a new and original show,” the studio said in a statement. “Any suggestion otherwise is false, and Warner Bros. Television intends to vigorously defend against these meritless claims.”
The swift Warner Bros. response comes after the Crichton estate accused exec producer John Wells of a “personal betrayal,” claiming that he and star Noah Wyle came up with “The Pitt” after the Crichton estate blocked their plans to reboot “ER.” “‘The Pitt’ is ‘ER,’” the lawsuit states. “It’s not like ‘ER.’ It’s not kind of ‘ER.’ It’s not sort of ‘ER.’ It is ‘ER’ with the exact same executive producer,...

Disney+ will premiere new Star Wars and “Winnie the Pooh” titles for kids, as well as the original series “Are You Sure?!” following BTS’s Jimin and Jung Kook. Hulu will become home to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” “The Woman King,” “Smile,” and more movie titles, as well as the home for FX series — this month: “The New York Times Presents: Lie to Fly: Documentary Premiere.” Hulu originals “Solar Opposites” returns on August 12, and “Reasonable Doubt” for its second season starting August...

Yara Shahidi and Marcus Scribner first joined the Johnson family a decade ago.
The then-child actors landed starring roles in ABC’s black-ish as Zoey and Andre Johnson, the eldest two of five precocious siblings with big ambitions. Little did they know, 10 years later, they’d finally be bidding farewell to these characters — on an entirely different show.
Freeform’s grown-ish wrapped its sixth and final season on Wednesday, closing that chapter for Shahidi and Scribner.
“It feels crazy. It feels odd. It’s been 10 years of doing the same thing for so long and growing with the character,” Scribner told Deadline. “You create a family and you create a lot of friends and have to say goodbye to all that, but I’m thankful that we get to send off the show with an actual little bowtie to end it all off.”

Taking cues from The Cosby Show’s iconic spinoff A Different World but updated for some 30 years later, Grown-ish, the Black-ish spawn premiered on Freeform in January 2018 by following Yara Shahidi’s Zoey Johnson, Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Bow’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) firstborn, to college. Similar to its predecessor, Grown-ish tackled many controversial topics, including university investment in the prison system, drug use, pre-nil exploitation of college athletes, sex, the value of college and more, but did so with a fresh voice and perspective.
Zoey’s college world included her competing love interests — woke Black campus activist Aaron (Trevor Jackson) and ultimate hipster Luca (Luka Sabbat) — as well as Latina Republican Ana (Francia Raìsa), Jewish rebel Nomi (Emily Arlook), first-generation Indian American and all-around hustler Vivek (Jordan Buhat), Olympic-bound South Los Angeles track stars Jazz and Sky (sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey, who perform the show’s theme song) and later,...

“Black-ish” and “Grown-ish” star Yara Shahidi has signed on to executive produce the documentary “Paint Me a Road Out of Here,” which will make its world premiere at the DC/Dox Film Festival next month.
Directed by Catherine Gund, “Paint Me a Road Out of Here” features artists Faith Ringgold and Mary Enoch Elizabeth Baxter and “uncovers the whitewashed history of Ringgold’s masterpiece ‘For the Women’s House,’ following the painting’s 50-year journey from the Rikers Jail to the Brooklyn Museum in a heartbreaking, funny and true parable for a world without mass incarceration.”
Of the painting Ringgold has said: “The women wanted to be free, they wanted to be out of there of course but it was obvious to me that the reason many of them were there was because they had a lack of freedom in the first place. They were arrested for doing things for other people.

It's the age-old question: can friendships survive hookups? In the new episode of Grown-ish, this is the theme that will circulate several of the characters' minds. The reason is a bit of a shocker, because it involves Andre (Marcus Scribner), Annika (Justine Skye) and Kiela (Daniella Taylor) going out for a wild night and then waking up in bed together. Collider can now share an exclusive sneak peek at the aftermath of this mess, before the episode airs tonight.

Kenya Barris was deeply inspired by “The Cosby Show” when he created “Black-ish” in 2014. The writer and executive producer wanted to create a similarly beloved family sitcom that was expressly Black, not only with the characters, but also in the subject matter the show covered. That mission was achieved, and like “The Cosby Show,” “Black-ish” went on to spawn a TV universe that would also make an impact.
“Grown-ish” was the first “Black-ish” spinoff. It has now gone six seasons and will air its 100th episode this month. Similar to “A Different World” with Lisa Bonet’s Denise Huxtable from “The Cosby Show,” “grown-ish” has chronicled the college adventures of “Black-ish” characters Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi) and later Andre Johnson Jr. (Marcus Scribner). “Grown-ish” has become a tentpole series for Freeform, according to Simran Sethi, exec VP of programming and content at Freeform and ABC.
