‘I Don’t Understand You’s Husband Writing-Directing Duo Talks “Horror Movie” Adoption Experience, “Amazing” Italian Crew & Their Son’s Cameo
Image
As LGBTQ representation evolves onscreen, films like I Don’t Understand You understand the universal truth that it’s impossible to support gay rights without supporting gay wrongs.

David Joseph Craig and Brian Crano, the husbands and writing/directing duo behind the dark comedy horror now in theaters, spoke to Deadline about the importance of writing “queer characters not just being labeled as queer” in their semi-autobiographical about a gay couple on a nightmare vacation in Italy while preparing to adopt a baby.

“There are a lot of different steps in emotions in a queer person, and I think we should see more of them,” said Craig. “We’re just excited to put a movie out there that shows queer characters, and also birth mothers, as real and great people.”

I Don’t Understand You stars Nick Kroll and Andrew Rannells as Dom and Cole, two prospective dads who find out they...

The Horror Buffs at Image Nation Abu Dhabi, Spooky Pictures Love “Cool Shit” and Have Unleashed ‘The Plague’ at Cannes
Image
High concept, low budget, straight-forward creative lens – that is how Emirati studio Image Nation Abu Dhabi and Los Angeles-based genre label Spooky Pictures target movies under their partnership that is bringing one of its features to the Cannes Film Festival for the first time.

No need to mince words either. “The creative mandate is: cool shit,” producer and Spooky co-founder Steven Schneider (Pet Sematary, Paranormal Activity, Insidious) tells THR. “We also always just look for things that are original and will surprise us,” adds producer and Spooky co-founder Roy Lee (It, The Ring, A Minecraft Movie). “The guiding light when we start out is that we want to make a movie that somebody thinks is their favorite movie of that year or of all time.”

The duo found a partner in crime in Image Nation CEO Ben Ross, bringing together what Schneider calls three “historical horror buffs” on a mission.

Arab Cinema Makes a Splash on the Croisette
Image
Arab cinema and its representatives are out in full force — and in the spotlight — on the Croisette this year, where the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival kicked off on Tuesday.

Case in point: Qatar’s film industry is gearing up for what insiders say will be its biggest-ever presence on the Croisette. The timing seems fitting given that the Arab Cinema Center (Acc) will, during the fest, bestow its sixth Arab Cinema Personality of the Year Award onto Fatma Hassan Alremaihi, CEO of Qatar’s Doha Film Institute, for her “noteworthy efforts to advance the Qatari, Arab, and global film industries.”

Egypt also has reason to celebrate. It returns to the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard lineup for the first time in nine years, with its “central role in regional production and distribution” as “the Arab world’s largest filmmaking hub” getting the spotlight in a...

Recasting Snow For Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping: 10 Actors Who Could Play Him
Image
It is expected that President Coriolanus Snow will play a role in the upcoming book and movie The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, necessitating a recast. Donald Sutherland, an acclaimed actor in his lifetime and the first to play President Snow, sadly passed away in June 2024. Sutherland was 88 years old, while Snow is 58 at the time of the 50th Hunger Games. Therefore, it is possible that the producers were already planning to recast. Snow was also played at 18 years old by Tom Blyth in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

Confirmed to take place 40 years after The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Sunrise on the Reaping will depict Haymitch Abernathy's victory in the Hunger Games. Snow still looms large over the story, already the tyrannical president of Panem. The Hunger Games franchise may be counted among Sutherland's best movies because of the fascinating character he plays.

According to Box Office Mojo, Land of Bad landed the No. 10 spot at the domestic box office with an estimated total of $2 million for the four-day weekend ($1.8 million for...

It Comes at Night Is Topping the Charts on Max
Image
It Comes at Night gained new attention after being added to Max, sparking debate among horror fans. The film received mixed reviews upon its theatrical release due to misleading marketing and ambiguous storytelling. Despite its divisive reception, those who appreciate slow-burn horror and open-ended interpretations may find it worth watching.

Streaming has a way of re-introducing films, and it is not uncommon for a movie that was previously released to little fanfare to become a talking point when hitting a platform and becoming widely available. Looking at the trending or top section on almost any streaming service, you will likely see one or two older releases alongside exclusives and movies straight out of the theater.

One movie getting this recent treatment, thanks to the inclusion on Max, is Trey Edward Shults' It Comes at Night, a highly divisive film from A24 that was met with mixed reactions from fans when...

‘Saltburn’ will bring Barry Keoghan back to Golden Globes
Image
Barry Keoghan landed his first Oscar nomination last year for his supporting turn in Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin.” Co-star Brendan Gleeson was also nominated but they both lost to “Everything Everywhere All at Once” player Ke Huy Quan. However, the big takeaway was that Keoghan had officially arrived.

The Oscar nomination preceded key turns in Christopher Nolan‘s “Dunkirk” and Chloé Zhao‘s MCU movie “Eternals,” while he also played the Joker in a deleted scene in Matt Reeves‘ “The Batman.” Keoghan has quickly risen through the ranks of Hollywood stars and now is one of the most interesting actors currently working.

His latest role comes in Emerald Fennell‘s sophomore outing as a director — her biting, satirical comedy-drama “Saltburn,” from Amazon MGM Studios/Warner Bros. Keoghan stars as Oliver, an oddball Oxford student who becomes obsessed with Felix (Jacob Elordi), his rich classmate. He later stays at Saltburn,...

Outer Banks Star Madelyn Cline's Best Movies & TV Shows
Image
Madelyn Cline has had smaller roles in various TV shows and movies before her breakout role in Outer Banks, but even those supporting roles have exposed her to a wide audience. Cline's role in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery allowed her to branch out from high school teen roles and showcase her comedic talent. Outer Banks is Cline's most significant role to date, where she handles romance, action, mystery, and comedy with equal measure, solidifying her as a standout performer in the series.

Outer Banks' Madelyn Cline has become a breakout star thanks to her lead role in the Netflix hit drama adding to her already impressive list of movies and TV shows. However, Outer Banks is far from Madelyn Cline’s first gig. Her first role was the 2009 short Milites Christi, and she made her feature film debut two years later in 23rd Psalm: Redemption. The Idol Cast: Meet the Actors and Musicians Behind The Weeknd’s HBO Series
Image
HBO’s upcoming series The Idol has gone through at least one major creative overhaul since it was announced, with co-creator Amy Seimetz leaving the show in April 2022. Euphoria’s Sam Levinson and Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd) then took over as creators for the series, reshaping it to fit their vision and the version of the show set to premiere June 4, 2023.

We don’t know much about the series, other than HBO’s official logline that reads “After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America. Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?”

Many details on The Idol’s characters, including their names,...

Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams in Manchester by the Sea (2016)
Actor Lucas Hedges: ‘I love nostalgia, so walking around England is another level’
Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams in Manchester by the Sea (2016)
The American star of Manchester By the Sea on making his West End debut in the world premiere of Brokeback Mountain, escaping tragic film roles, and nepo babies

Brooklyn-born Lucas Hedges, 26, began his acting career in his teens with a supporting role in Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom. His breakthrough was Manchester By the Sea, which earned him an Oscar nomination. Subsequent film credits include Lady Bird, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Boy Erased. Hedges now makes his West End debut in the stage adaptation of Annie Proulx’s Brokeback Mountain.

The world premiere of Brokeback Mountain is rooted in Annie Proulx’s original novella, but what’s your relationship with the 2005 film?

I saw it when I was young and thought it was great. Certain moments stuck in my mind but I’m trying to forget those now that I’m doing this play! I’m just seeing...

Master Gardener Cast & Character Guide
Image
Master Gardener has a small, but well-known cast. The film, written and directed by Paul Schrader, had its premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival. It’s finally being released in theaters, and it brings with it the talents of the cast, led by Joel Edgerton in the titular role.

Master Gardener follows the title character as he works to be redeemed for his past crimes, mentors a young woman, and keeps his head down as he appreciates the land that he cultivates on a daily basis. Ahead of the film’s release, it received mostly positive reviews from critics. Schrader gathered a good cast to star in the movie, a mixture of famous actors and others who are lesser-known. With Edgerton in the lead role, he’s surrounded by a capable supporting cast that brings Schrader’s story to life.

‘You Can Live Forever’ Review: Earnest Jehovah’s Witness Lesbian Drama Has Few Surprises
Image
As long as religion is so preoccupied with queerness, queer artists must reckon with religion. While the closeted zealot trope may be played out at this point, it seems every sect wants its shot at the clandestine queer romance. Of course, there is plenty of Sapphic fun to be mined from the queering of rituals, sacrifice, and self-flagellation, as with the sensual tension of recent entries like “Disobedience” or the outrageous heresy of “Benedetta.” More somber entries into the sub-genre include 2018’s conversion therapy duo of “Boy Erased” and “The Miseducation of Cameron Post.”

Amidst such a crowded field, the Jehovah’s Witness drama “You Can Live Forever” doesn’t quite stand out, short of opening a door into one of the lesser explored religious sects. Though the well-crafted film makes use of a unique regional setting for some moving moments, its straightforward approach to well-worn territory offers few surprises.

Brokeback Mountain Stage Play Will Star Mike Faist And Lucas Hedges
Image
"Crash" winning Best Picture over "Brokeback Mountain" is easily one of the biggest upsets in modern Oscar history. The Academy's decision was already highly contentious and has only aged like sour milk in the decades since. Ang Lee's tragic romance, on the other hand, remains a touchstone for positive queer representation in mainstream cinema. To dismiss it as the embodiment of the "Bury Your Gays" trope is to approach the film in a vacuum. At a time when homophobic humor intended to assuage the insecurities of straight audiences was commonplace in Hollywood, Lee and his "Brokeback" actors dared to take the story of two men falling in love seriously.

According to Deadline, the tale of cowboys Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist is getting a new lease on life thanks to a London stage production based on Annie Proulx's original 1997 short story (not Lee's movie). Mike Faist and...

These Two Queer Coming-of-Age Stories Make for a Perfect Double Feature
Image
As sometimes happens during the Hollywood release calendar, pairs of films get released the same year that feature remarkably similar narratives. Though this is an observable pattern—and seems to be most frequent with high-concept, studio-backed movies—it is still an uncommon occurrence. This is why it is especially surprising that 2018 saw the release of two indie dramas centered on teenagers being sent to gay conversion camps. The more well-known of this pair, Boy Erased, received critical acclaim and made its way around the awards circuit. The lesser-known The Miseducation of Cameron Post also received critical respect, but flew under audiences’ radars. Cameron Post may have been overshadowed the year of their release (unsurprising considering Boy Erased was distributed by Focus Features and stars Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe), but the film absolutely deserves recognition. Rather than evaluating the films against one another—as it is so tempting to do...
