The Toll (2021)

Trivia

The Toll

Edit
Dixie, who is dressed in an Elvis Presley outfit throughout her appearances in the film, mentions wanting to "get to Porthcawl for the Elvis Festival", which she hopes to win. Porthcawl is a well-known Welsh seaside resort, about eighty or ninety miles from the scene of this film's events and in a different county, and it does hold an annual weekend event honoring "the King", where many hundreds of Elvis impersonators from all over the world compete to see who's the best lookalike.
Cliff, the ambulance driver, talks about wanting to take his girlfriend, a nurse, to "the Hotel Mariners in town" for a meal, adding that they do a very nice steak in black peppercorn sauce. The town is not named. However, there really is a Mariners Hotel in Haverfordwest, the county town of Pembrokeshire, only a few miles from where this scene takes place; and a steak with black peppercorn sauce is one of its kitchen's specialties.
In the passenger seat of the constabulary Land Rover that Catrin drives is a pamphlet titled, "delio á galar a cholled" in Welsh. The English translation is, "deal with grief and loss."
The book that the "Toll Booth" character is seen reading throughout the film, which also provides its epigraph at the outset, is "Stoner", by the American writer John Williams (1922-94).
The hospital which employs Cliff as an ambulance driver, which is seen very briefly at one point late in the film, is never named. It is Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest. This is situated only half a mile or so from the home of screenwriter Matt Redd's parents. (His father, the well-known science-fiction writer David Redd, is mentioned in the film's acknowledgments.)
