Sources suggest the project is in early talks, with Amazon keen to capitalize on Urban’s popularity following his standout performance in The Boys.

The 2012 Dredd movie, despite its modest box office performance of $41 million worldwide, gained a strong cult following for its gritty, faithful adaptation of the comic. It earned $13.4 million in North America and $27.6 million internationally, with the UK being a key market, grossing $6.9 million.

More than a decade after it failed to find its audience in theaters, a now-beloved sci-fi/action movie is finding a new audience on streaming. "Dredd," released in 2012 and starring Karl Urban as the titular Judge Dredd, has become a hit on Max since making its way back to the streaming service recently. So much so that it's become one of the most-watched movies on the service overall.

Ever since Judge Dredd: Mega-City One was first announced in May 2017, most of the speculation has focused on the potential involvement of Karl Urban rather than the content of the spinoff show itself. After all, the star of The Boys headlined the 2012 box office bomb that went on to become one of the most popular cult favorites of the 21st Century, and fans would love to see him reprise the role.

It would be an understatement to say that cult comic book antihero Judge Dredd hasn’t had the best of luck in live-action. The 1995 Sylvester Stallone vehicle bombed at the box office after earning a little over $110 million globally against a $90 million budget, and neither fans or critics were particularly enthusiastic about the movie, which was ultimately labeled one of the worst of the year.

2012 reboot Dredd received a much more enthusiastic response, and is widely regarded as one of the most underrated action flicks in recent memory, but not enough people turned up to see it in the theater to make a sequel a worthwhile investment. Despite strong sales on home video, the movie couldn’t even recoup the $45 million production costs during its theatrical run and any talk of a follow-up has remained rooted in optimism rather than reality despite constant demands from fans.

‘Step Up: High Water’

Global Road Entertainment has signed a first-look television deal with Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot’s Offspring Entertainment, the production company behind the Step Up franchise.

The first projects to be developed under the deal are an untitled comedy from actor-producers and social media stars Carlos and Alexa PenaVega and Wolfgang, the previously announced (under the title Coda) series about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart that is currently being sold in the international marketplace.

Global Road is the new brand adopted last year by China’s Tang Media Partners after its acquisitions of Us operations Im Global and Open Road Films.

A couple of pieces of concept art has been released for the highly anticipated series Judge Dredd: Mega City One. As you'll see below, they give us a look at the setting and the mood of the series, and it looks really cool.

The concept art comes with a new statement from producer Jason Kingsley. He goes on to once again confirm that they are in discussions with Karl Urban and that they are making sure this series is going to be everything that they want it to be.

Urban recently confirmed himself that he is been in talks with the producers and that he would love to do it. Kingsley adds to that saying:

“We have been in discussions with Karl about his possible involvement in Judge Dredd: Mega-City One for some time. These conversations continue but we’re keen, he’s keen – it’s just a case...

We found out a few months ago that Judge Dredd is coming to TV, in a new project currently in development called Judge Dredd: Mega City One. But it sounds like we're going to have to put a muffle on our excitement because we're going to have to wait awhile.

One of the show's producers, Jason Kingsley recently told SFX Magazine:

"Long-form storytelling makes showing Mega-City One and its inhabitants much easier. Trying to fit all of that into a two-hour movie is very hard. My best guess is that it’s at least two years away. But we’re so early in the process that things could happen a bit faster, or much more slowly."

As far as the show's tone is concerned, Kingsley revealed:

"Dark fantasy elements are one area that would be great to explore." He added, "The show will combine the macabre with the insane and the light-hearted. It's a big place, after all, with 400 million stories to tell."

Another producer from the series, Brian Jenkins, previously told the 2000 Ad Thrill-cast that Karl Urban returning to the franchise isn't out of the question.

"We have had many conversations prior to this, about all sorts of things. He’s also very busy, a full-time professional actor. So we’re going to have some long and complicated conversations I would imagine, and we’ll see where we go. It’s too early to tell yet, but if we can use him and he’s available to us, then I think that would be absolutely brilliant. There’s always a possibility he will be busy, or that his schedule for other movies won’t allow- Basically, we don’t know at this stage."

Kingsley told the magazine that even though they haven't officially started talking about who will star in the show, he knows Urban "well enough to have a chat with him" about reprising the role.

As many of you already know, there's a new Judge Dredd series currently in development called Judge Dredd: Mega City One. We've got a long way to go before the series is released, but they are actively in talks with Karl Urban to try and get him on board. It would be so awesome if they were able to work that out!

I was extremely excited to hear that Judge Dredd was getting a series of its own. Fans have been wanting to see something like this happen for years. We've all been hoping for a sequel to Dredd but Judge Dredd: Mega City One could end up being the next best thing, especially if Karl Urban is a part of it!

Karl Urban recently appeared at Star Trek's Las Vegas convention to chat about a whole bunch of things, which inevitably ended up including his possible links to Judge Dredd: Mega City One, the planned TV continuation of the 2012 cult classic movie featuring the 2000 Ad antihero.

Urban went on to get hopes up everywhere by revealing that “I am in discussions with them about that. I told them that if they write the material and give Dredd something to do and give him a function, I will be there. I would love to.”
