Psych: The Movie

‘Blue Bloods’ Spinoff ‘Boston Blue’ Casts ‘Psych’ Star Maggie Lawson
Image
Maggie Lawson has been cast as a series regular in “Boston Blue,” CBS’ upcoming spinoff of “Blue Bloods.”

She will play Boston Police Department superintendent Sarah Silver, who is described as “well aware of the tightrope she can walk sometimes between her job and her family.”

“Boston Blue” stars Donnie Wahlberg in a reprisal of his “Blue Bloods” role, officer Danny Reagan. The series follows Danny after he takes a role with Boston Pd, where he is partnered with detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.

This won’t be Lawson’s first time playing a cop: she is best known for starring as Juliet O’Hara in “Psych,” which ran on the USA network for eight seasons from 2006 to 2014, as well “Psych: The Movie” (2017), “Psych 2: Lassie Come Home” (2020) and “Psych 3: This Is Gus (2021).” In 2024, she starred in the Hallmark Christmas movie “Sugarplummed,...

What Happened to Zachary Levi?
Image
An insider at The Hollywood Reporter, who I am suuuuure can be trusted 100%, recently informed the world that actor Zachary Levi was disappointed and “bitter” that he didn’t rise to Chris Evans or The Rock level of stardom after Shazam. Nobody can be sure if these were his true feelings, but to many, the science has been settled, and this is how he feels. So the dude became a Robert F Kennedy Jr. fan, which resulted in a Trump endorsement and running away from… or rather, escaping, LA. He now spends his time on a ranch in Texas, where, apparently, he is going to focus on making faith-based films. So, did they cancel Zachary Levi, or did they set him free?

As an actor, his silliness is always believable, especially when he pretty much plays himself, a lovable man-child who can do action scenes, like in the hilarious show Chuck.

Many athletes turn to acting, whether through television advertisements and commercials like Coach Prime, Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Derek Jeter, Eli Manning, and Kevin Durant.

Other athletes like Travis Kelce, Pat McAfee, Deion Sanders (Prime), and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. do podcasts to attract a following.

Psych: The True Story Behind The Show's Pineapple Obsession
Image
Pineapples became a staple in Psych thanks to an improvised line by James Roday in the pilot episode. Fans loved searching for pineapples in nearly every episode of Psych, making it a recurring and fun gag. How I Met Your Mother also used pineapples as a running joke, but not as frequently as Psych.

Psych had a reputation of having a humorous obsession with pineapples, but many fans have wondered why. The tropical fruit made multiple appearances throughout the USA series, and the show's attachment to pineapples even extended to promotional photos of the cast, comic con conventions, and merchandise. Through its eight-season run, Psych made use of a number of recurring jokes and gags. These included Shaun's long list of fake nicknames for Gus (Dul Hill), references to popular movies from the 1980s, Gus' "Magic Head" moniker that originated in a season 1 episode, and many more.

Among the...

Psych 4 Gets Hopeful Update Following Franchise's "Complete" Home Release
Image
Despite the franchise being called "complete" with the release of a boxed set, discussions for a fourth Psych film are still ongoing. Star Jazmyn Simon expressed that as long as fans want more movies, they will continue making them, hinting at the possibility of Psych 4. Scheduling issues and the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike have delayed the production of Psych 4, making it uncertain when the film will be realized.

Psych 4 receives a hopeful update despite an upcoming home release that calls the franchise "complete." Beginning on USA in 2006, the series follows the crime consultant Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez), who convinces others that he solves cases using psychic powers alongside his reluctant partner, Gus (Dulé Hill). Since the original series ended in 2014, Psych has received three feature films – Psych: The Movie, Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, and Psych 3: This Is Gus. An upcoming Psych boxed set, which includes all eight...

"It Was All Lined Up": Why Psych 4 Hasn't Happened Yet Explained By Shawn Actor
Image
James Roday Rodriguez gives an update on Psych 4's progress and explains why the film hasn't happened yet. Rodriguez starred alongside Dulé Hill in the detective comedy Psych, which aired from 2006 to 2014. However, despite the conclusion of the series, the franchise has continued through a series of TV films. The first film, Psych: The Movie, premiered on USA Network before Peacock took over and released two more movies. Plans for a Psych 4 have been circulating since 2022, but updates have been hard to come by.

In an interview with TVLine, Rodriguez has a hopeful update on the status of Psych 4. He reaffirms some facts that were already known - namely that a script has already been written - while revealing the movie was close to getting underway just last year. However, Rodriguez then explains what prevented Psych 4 from getting off the ground. Check out his statement below:

It’s been 18 months since Shawn and Gus cracked their last case (via Psych 3: This Is Gus) and there’s still no official word from Peacock about a fourth movie. That said, franchise star/EP James Roday Rodriguez tells TVLine “there are flickers of light.”

According to the actor/auteur, a fourth Psych movie was tentatively scheduled to go into production last year. “The only reason that Psych 4 didn’t happen last year was scheduling,” Rodriguez explains. “It was all lined up, and we would’ve made an announcement, but then we just couldn’t pull it together in...

Psych 4 Movie May Be Right Around The Corner, According To One Star
Image
With three successful films to date, Kurt Fuller says a Psych 4 movie may just be right around the corner. Created by Steve Franks, the franchise began with the eponymous TV show centered on Shawn Spencer, the son of a former police detective who uses the skills his dad raised him with to solve crimes as a fake psychic with his childhood friend Burton Guster. Initially ending after eight seasons in 2014, Psych would come back with 2017's Psych: The Movie, the first of five planned sequels.

Screen Rant recently caught up with Fuller for an exclusive chat on his role in the Night Court revival, during which he was asked about a potential Psych 4. The series star seemed largely confident in the chances for another sequel, even reflecting on a recent conversation he had with James Roday Rodriguez in which his co-star and executive producer is "playing things close to the vest.

Art imitating life, in the case of Psych crime solver Carlton Lassiter, has profoundly moved series vet Timothy Omundson.

Omundson suffered a major stroke in April 2017, just as production on the original Psych: The Movie was getting underway; as such, Lassiter only appears via a brief FaceTime call with Juliet. In 2020, Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, as its title suggested, brought Omundson back to a greater degree, pinning the central mystery on the shooting of Lassiter, who then also suffered a stroke from which he started to recover throughout the TV-movie.

‘Psych 3: This Is Gus’ Gets Premiere Date and Trailer (New York Comic Con Roundup)
Image
Peacock announced that “Psych 3: This is Gus” will premiere on Nov. 18.

A spinoff of the USA Network detective comedy “Psych” and a sequel to “Psych: The Movie” and “Psych 2: Lassie Come Home,” the new film will see fake-psychic detective Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and his friend and partner Burton “Gus” Guster (Dulé Hill) investigate the double life and estranged husband of Gus’ fiancée Selene (Jazmyn Simon). They work the case while preparing for Gus’ shotgun wedding and new baby, as Chief Charlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) grapples with the future of his career.

In a new trailer, which you can watch below, Shawn and Gus reprise their old bits and catchphrases — knocking on doors and using fake names to question people, working in costume and telling each other to “suck it.”

Along with Rodriguez, Hill and Omundson, returning stars include Maggie Lawson as Juliet O’Hara, Kirsten Nelson as Karen Vick,...

The book became a summer publishing success story, appearing on numerous “Best Of” lists including Amazon, Oprah Mag, BuzzFeed, PopSugar, SheReads, and The Mary Sue. Jimenez’s first novel, The Friend Zone, was a USA Today bestseller and her next book, Life’s Too Short,...

How Psych Evolved Through the Character of Carlton Lassiter
Image
Early on in the Psych pilot, Shawn Spencer’s (James Roday Rodriguez) ludicrous plot to impersonate a psychic in order to solve crime suddenly takes on grave stakes: Chief Vick (Kirsten Nelson) informs him that if he’s lying, he’ll be prosecuted for hindering a police investigation. Just like that, he’s locked into his lie, and has no choice but to let it snowball—into a private eye business with his best friend Burton Guster (Dulé Hill), but also into a lucrative consultancy gig for the Santa Barbara Police Department that, psychic antics be damned, legitimately saves lives.

But while it’s the Chief who put the fear of God into Shawn, the true threat to his secret was always one Carlton Jebediah Lassiter (Timothy Omundson). In the early seasons, Lassiter was the perfect foil: a by-the-book detective obsessed with proper procedure and with hypermasculinity, who had patience...

66 Photos of Dulé Hill and Jazmyn Simon That'll Have You Saying, "I Want a Love Like That"
Although they didn't play a couple on Ballers, Dulé Hill and Jazmyn Simon have the HBO show to thank for their real-life romance. The pair first met after a clandestine lunch meeting on the set of the show in 2015, and they exchanged numbers there and then. In an interview with People, Jazmyn called Dulé

the love of her life

and said that exchanging numbers was the "best decision [she's] ever made."

The couple got engaged in April 2017 before getting married a year later in Antigua, Guatemala, where Dulé's Psych costar James Roday served as a groomsman. They later welcomed

a son named Levi Dulé Hill

in 2019, who joined Jazmyn's 16-year-old daughter, Kennedy, from a previous relationship. Jazmyn also plays Selene, the love interest of Dulé's Psych character, Burton "Gus" Guster, in Psych: The Movie and Psych 2: Lassie Come Home.

Dulé Hill, Maggie Lawson, Timothy Omundson, and James Roday Rodriguez in Psych 2: Lassie Come Home (2020)
How Psych 2 Honors Tim Omundson's Real-Life Stroke While Remaining So Very Psych
Dulé Hill, Maggie Lawson, Timothy Omundson, and James Roday Rodriguez in Psych 2: Lassie Come Home (2020)
This story contains mild spoilers for Psych 2: Lassie Come Home.  When Psych ended its run on USA in 2014, it didn't really "end." Creator Steve Franks was already talking about the many movies he planned to make back then, and there was never a sense that the Psych office had closed for good, even as Shawn (James Roday Rodriguez), Gus (Dulé Hill), and Juliet (Maggie Lawson) followed Chief Vick (Kirsten Nelson) to San Francisco while Detective Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) stayed behind in Santa Barbara. There was always talk of continuing the show, and for the fans, it felt like a promise. A when, not an if. Finally, Psych: The Movie was announced in early 2017, with plans for...

Why Psych Is and Always Will Be My Favorite Fallback Show
Image

While some people always go back to The Office or Friends when rewatching favorite shows, I've always gravitated toward Psych. The show, which follows the antics of fake-psychic detective Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and his best friend/partner-in-crime Burton "Gus" Guster (Dulé Hill), first caught my eye during a commercial break of a random episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. I've always been a fan of crime and detective shows, but they often drain me emotionally after a few hours due to the dark nature of the material. Psych immediately seemed different. Although it often follows a murder, its focus has always been more on Shawn, Gus, and their ridiculous interactions with others than the crime itself.

It didn't take long for me to get hooked and I'd often find myself caught up in marathons on USA Network and quoting the show in my everyday life.

Dulé Hill, Maggie Lawson, Timothy Omundson, and James Roday Rodriguez in Psych 2: Lassie Come Home (2020)
Psych 2: Lassie Come Home Easter Egg and Reference Guide
Dulé Hill, Maggie Lawson, Timothy Omundson, and James Roday Rodriguez in Psych 2: Lassie Come Home (2020)
The following contains spoilers for Psych 2: Lassie Come Home.

As fun as 2017’s Psych: The Movie was, its 2020 sequel Psych 2: Lassie Come Home will likely supplant it in Psych-Os’ hearts, because it’s got 500% more Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson). But how does it stack up to its predecessor in terms of Psych callbacks and pop culture homages? Using our Spencer powers of observation, we’ve tried to catch every recurring inside joke between Shawn (James Roday Rodriguez) and Gus (Dulé Hill), plus all the episodic-specific bits. It’s a feature-length Hitchcock homage, but it’s also the toughest Easter egg hunt of your life. C’mon, son!

Psych 2: Lassie Come Home Easter Eggs and References

The title is a reference to Lassie Come Home, the 1943 Lassie movie about the beloved dog making her way home from Scotland. A German-language remake came out early in 2020.

It’s always...

‘Psych’ Refresher: Here’s Where We Left Off Ahead of ‘Psych 2: Lassie Come Home’
Dulé Hill and James Roday Rodriguez in Psych : Enquêteur malgré lui (2006)
The wait is almost over, “Psych” fans. Among the many offerings that will be available when NBCUniversal’s new streaming service, Peacock, launches nationwide Wednesday is “Psych 2: Lassie Come Home,” the long-awaited sequel to “Psych: The Movie.”

Now, seeing as it’s been a while since the first “Psych” film debuted on USA Network in December 2017 — and even longer since the detective dramedy series ended its eight season run in 2014 — we’re willing to bet that even the most die-hard fans don’t remember exactly where we left things with Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dulé Hill). Well, don’t worry, because we’re here to recap it all for you so that you’re fully prepared for the premiere of “Psych 2: Lassie Come Home” tomorrow.

Ok, so “Psych: The Movie” takes place three years after the series finale, with Shawn, Gus and Juliet (Maggie Lawson) still living in San Francisco,...

Psych 2: Lassie Come Home Review
Image
Psych: The Movie, when it was released in 2017, was clearly a love letter for the avid Psych-Os missing fake psychic Shawn Spencer (James Roday), his platonic life partner Burton Guster (Dulé Hill), and the rest of the Santa Barbara Police Department after the series wrapped in 2014. From a David Bowie-loving villain to a #TeamGrimmie T-shirt, it was the best kind of fan service. Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, then, is undoubtedly a love letter from the cast and crew of Psych to one of their own: actor Timothy Omundson and his grouchy yet heroic alter ego, detective Carlton Lassiter, both undergoing recovery for a stroke. Psych 2, which premieres July 15 on Peacock, is a surprisingly poignant example of art imitating life while still ushering a crew of beloved characters through personal and professional life changes.

Because of the timing of Omundson’s stroke prior to shooting the first movie,...

Psych 2: Lassie Come Home Stars on Hitchcock Homages and Special Reunions
Dulé Hill and James Roday Rodriguez in Psych: The Movie (2017)
The final moments of 2017’s Psych: The Movie are literally explosive: Professional fake psychic Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and partner-in-crime-solving Burton Guster (Dulé Hill) watch their newly-christened San Francisco-based practice go up in laser-sniper-fire from whoever’s hot on the trail of Shawn’s brother-in-law Ewan O’Hara (John Cena). It might have seemed an obvious setup for an eventual second Psych movie, with the titular duo following in the wake of Ewan’s ex-Black-Ops adventures, but instead creator Steve Franks and Roday (who shares a co-writing credit on both movies) went for a quieter and more emotionally resonant angle in their followup.

It’s all in the title, which will tug at many a Psych-O’s heartstrings: Psych 2: Lassie Come Home. Mere weeks before shooting began on Psych: The Movie, cast member Timothy Omundson suffered a stroke that left him unable to reprise his role from the USA series,...

Psych 2: Lassie Come Home Debuts First Trailer
Dulé Hill and James Roday Rodriguez in Psych : Enquêteur malgré lui (2006)
Psych is officially set for another small screen reunion between James Roday’s Shawn Spencer and Dulé Hill’s Burton Guster for more pseudo-psychic sleuthing, thanks to the official order for a sequel TV movie, which, is now titled Psych 2: Lassie Come Home.

Interestingly, unlike 2017’s Psych: The Movie, the follow-up, as it turns out, will not premiere on the show’s old home of USA Network, with the reveal that it will instead debut on NBCU’s streaming service, Peacock. The move occurs after USA gave the initial greenlight for a second two-hour Psych TV movie back in February of 2019.

While it was originally planned to arrive before the end of 2019, the movie’s Peacock premiere is now tied to the streaming platform’s July 2020 launch. Steve Franks, creator of the original series, returns as director, writer and executive producer for Psych 2: Lassie Come Home.

‘Psych’ Team Talks Reteaming With Timothy Omundson: ‘There Was a Hole When We Were Filming the First Movie’
Image
It’s been six years since “Psych” aired its series finale on USA Network after an eight-season run, but the property is hardly out of cases for its central detective duo.

“Even on the pilot, I was saying we’re going to do five seasons and a movie, and as we got past five seasons we had to just start upping our expectations,” said creator Steve Franks during Atx Television Festival’s virtual reunion panel Sunday. “Then we stopped speculating on the seasons and I added it to six movies. So we got eight seasons, six movies; we’re in two. I think if we start speaking it into existence, it’ll start to happen.”

With a loyal fanbase that’s still clamoring for more shenanigans and a creative team whose bonds only grow stronger with time, there’s still ambitious plans to keep following these characters into the future.
