Here’s Why ‘Gilligan’s Island’s Bob Denver Was Furious With ‘TV Guide’
Image
Who could get mad at TV Guide?

The long-running magazine mostly consisted of program listings — What time? What channel? — and fluff pieces about whatever sitcom, variety show or hospital drama was currently atop the Nielsen ratings. Inoffensive stuff, right?

But TV Guide did manage to royally piss off Bob Denver, the actor who played the titular character on Gilligan’s Island. Dawn Wells, who played sweet Mary Ann, probably wasn’t nuts about the magazine either.

Some said Denver was “a monster” for refusing to pose with Tina “Ginger” Louise over the years, according to Russell “The Professor” Johnson in his memoir, Here on Gilligan’s Isle. However, Johnson says there’s more to the story, and the blame lies entirely with TV Guide.

The magazine wanted to do a cover shoot with Denver and Louise, “possibly attempting to add some romantic undertone to the show,” hypothesized Johnson. Given that...

Giuseppe Tornatore Reveals ‘Cinema Paradiso’ Took 11 Years to Brew, at Shanghai Festival Masterclass
Image
Sometimes the best stories are worth the wait.

Giuseppe Tornatore revealed at a Shanghai International Film Festival masterclass that his beloved Oscar-winning film “Cinema Paradiso” gestated for 11 years before he wrote a single word.

“When I made my first film about the Mafia [“The Professor”], I was already brewing the script for ‘Cinema Paradiso’ in my mind,” Tornatore explained to film scholar Marco Müeller during the conversation at Shanghai, where he served as the head of the main competition jury. “It took 11 years of contemplation before I actually started writing the script.”

When he finally put pen to paper after more than a decade of contemplation, the script poured out in just two and a half months. “I had been thinking about this story for 11 years,” he said. “Once I started writing, it felt like the story was already complete in my mind.”

The evening followed a screening of “Cinema Paradiso,...

Gilligan's Island Star Russell Johnson Hated Westerns For One Reason
Image
When you're a young actor beginning to make a bit of headway in Hollywood, you might be tempted to look ahead at what your career could be five years from now and strategize with your agent to target roles in the types of films that best showcase your talents. Perhaps you come alive in romantic comedies. Maybe you're ideal as a hissable heavy. It's possible you're the Laurence Olivier of grease-stained ex-con mechanics who get harassed by detectives while toiling away at the undercarriage of a car. You might know where you're headed, but you don't want to cut off opportunities before you're booking steady work.

Consider the career of Russell Johnson. The man who would be Professor Roy Hinkley on "Gilligan's Island" survived getting shot down by the Japanese military during World War II before seeking fame and fortune as an actor in Hollywood. He had every right to...

Tina Louise Almost Quit ‘Gilligan’s Island’ When They Wanted to Change Ginger
Image
Tina Louise was starring on Broadway with Carol Burnett when producers approached her about a part in a new sitcom. “The CBS casting director Ethel Winant called me at the theater, ‘Do you think you could play this Lucille Ball/Marilyn Monroe-type of character?’” the 91-year-old actress told Forbes. “I said yes.”

The Lucy-meets-Marilyn character was Ginger Grant, the “movie star” who was shouted out in the opening credits of Gilligan’s Island. That character description was enough to make Louise ditch Broadway, but she was in for a rude awakening when she arrived on set. “I got there and the director wanted it to be a more sarcastic kind of character,” she said. “And so, then I didn’t even want to work on it anymore. I told him I wanted to quit.”

The head of CBS intervened, calling Louise in for a meeting. “I explained to him...

Who Sang The Iconic Gilligan's Island Theme Song?
Image
"The Ballad of Gilligan's Island," in case it needs repeating, is the single best TV theme song of all time. In addition to explicitly explaining the premise of the classic show, "Ballad" introduces every single one of its seven main characters by name. It also helps that it's one of the most insidious earworms this side of "Yellow Submarine"; once you get "The Ballad of Gilligan's Island" stuck in your head, it will never leave. Your mind will be as lost as the Minnow.

In the original pilot episode for "Gilligan's Island," back before the final cast had been selected, the theme song was a calypso number composed by John Williams. That song, however, wasn't exactly what show creator Sherwood Schwartz wanted, so he and songwriter George Wyle wrote a second, better theme.. His and Schwartz's "Ballad" was written as a sea shanty, and no one can hear its...

Tina Louise Changed Her Mind About Gilligan's Island After A Moving Fan Encounter
Image
For many years, fans of "Gilligan's Island" heard the rumors that actress Tina Louise, who played the glamorous movie star Ginger on the series, openly hated the show. These rumors were founded mostly on the fact that Louise, after "Gilligan's Island" went off the air in 1967, refused to reunite with her old co-stars for any of the follow-up TV movies or animated spinoffs. Everyone else returned for those projects, but Louise stayed far away.

Additionally, stories from the set detailed a strained working relationship between Louise and star Bob Denver. Some might know the story about how Louise signed a contract allowing her to be listed last in the credits, forcing the writers of the "Gilligan's Island" theme song to refer to the Professor and Mary Ann as "and the rest!" It wouldn't be until Bob Denver pulled rank and theatened to put his own starring credit last that Louise...

Dawn Wells Was Crushing On A Gilligan's Island Co-Star, But The Timing Wasn't Right
Image
Actress Dawn Wells passed away in 2020 at the age of 82, having experienced a prolific career in TV and on film. In the early 1960s, Wells appeared on hot TV shows like "Wagon Train," "Maverick," and "77 Sunset Strip" in various supporting roles, and her career boomed in 1964 when she was hired to play the friendly hayseed Mary Ann on Sherwood Schwartz's mega-hit "Gilligan's Island." While "Gilligan's Island" was derided at the time for its silliness and broad, cartoony tone, it was still a huge hit, and the seven lead actors all became household names. Indeed, "Gilligan's Island" became so popular that several of its stars had trouble shaking off their association with the show.

After the series ended, Wells continued to work on hit shows like "Bonanza," and she appeared in notable horror movies like "The Town That Dreaded Sundown" and "Return to Boggy Creek," but many of her...

The Real Reason Russell Johnson & Dawn Wells Weren't In The Gilligan's Island Opening
Image
TV trivia fanatics will happily point out that the first-season theme song to Sherwood Schwartz's seminal sitcom "Gilligan's Island" is different from the theme heard in later seasons. The song is the same -- it's the usual, earworm sea shanty that everyone can sing from memory -- but the final listing of the show's dramatis personae is different. In the later seasons, the theme song listed Gilligan (Bob Denver), the Skipper too (Alan Hale), the Millionaire (Jim Backus) and his wife (Natalie Shafer), the movie star (Tina Louise), the professor (Russell Watson) and Mary Ann (Dawn Wells), there on Gilligan's isle.

In the first season, however, the professor and Mary-Ann were introduced merely as "And the rest." Watson and Wells didn't have credits and photos like everyone else. This was a little baffling, as all seven characters were of equal value to the series; no one was a supporting player.

'Money Heist's "Bella Ciao" Song Has a Deeper Meaning
Image
"Bella Ciao" isn't just a pop anthem that the popular series Money Heist thrust into the global spotlight, the Italian folk song is a revolutionary cry. It's a melody that transcends the heist, uniting comrades for their common cause. A symbol of defiance, "Bella Ciao" originated from Italian resistance — first, rice laborers resisting mistreatment at work, and later, partisans resisting fascism. In Money Heist, the song rallies the crew behind The Professor as they defiantly challenge the system. It's an echo that reminds the robbers that it is not just about the heist. It's about fighting against injustice in a Robin Hood-like rebellion. It is about facing a rigged system head-on. A system that takes away a three-year-old baby from her mother, Nairobi (Alba Flores), after it fails to protect her, blaming her instead for its own corruption that left her hopeless. But it also reminds the thieves in the...

‘All the Light We Cannot See’ Review: Netflix Limited Series Fails to Capture Pulitzer-Winning Novel’s Essence
Aria Mia Loberti in Toute la lumière que nous ne pouvons voir (2023)
Were one to go into “All the Light We Cannot See” totally cold — drawn to the four-part limited series, say, purely by its placement atop Netflix’s home page — it would be impossible to discern that it was based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel celebrated for its lyricism and profundity.

The dialogue here is pedestrian. The lead character, blind French teenager Marie-Laure LeBlanc (screen newcomer Aria Mia Loberti), escapes the German invasion of Paris in World War II with her father, Daniel (Mark Ruffalo). They seek refuge in the French port city of Saint-Malo. Yet throughout the journey, and the limited series, our Gallic heroine and Papa LeBlanc speak English with British accents.

The series’ wartime visuals are dark and obviously CG-enhanced. More practical effects include perfectly contained fires placed in strategic spots to indicate — along with James Newton Howard’s overwrought score — that a neighborhood has been bombed.

This lack of realism,...

‘All the Light We Cannot See’ Review: Shawn Levy’s Schmaltzy Netflix Adaptation Misses the Mark
Image
During one of the many flashbacks in “All the Light We Cannot See,” Marie-Laure (Aria Mia Loberti) sits with her great-uncle, Etienne (Hugh Laurie), as the aging Frenchman casts a line into the English Channel. Their fishing expedition is both a ploy and, well, a fishing expedition: They’re trawling for intelligence, not dinner, as Etienne describes the new boats docked nearby to his blind grandniece, who dutifully writes down whatever she’s told. Later, their reports will be shared with the Allies over the radio, but only if their cover, the fishing pole, masks their more critical tool: the typewriter. Nazi troops have taken over the small French town of Saint-Malo, and a cadre of Germans soon stumble upon their two-person operation. As an inquisitive officer demands answers from Marie, Etienne reaches into his tackle box for a makeshift weapon. If they don’t buy her story, he knows what must be done.

Every Johnny Depp Movie Ranked From Worst to Best
Image
Johnny Depp has had a long and varied career of ups and downs, hits and misses, but how do Johnny Depp movies rank from worst to best? Beginning his career as a teen heartthrob in films like A Nightmare on Elm Street and the hit TV show 21 Jump Street, Depp quickly graduated to leading roles, eventually fostering a relationship with director Tim Burton. It's with Burton that he developed a movie star persona that would become uniquely his, a mix of eccentric oddities and deeply-felt soulfulness. This peculiar presence would go on to shine in films like Edward Scissorhands and What's Eating Gilbert Grape, leading inevitably to his instantly-iconic turn as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Later in his career, he became embroiled in controversy and was dropped from his role as the main villain in Warner Bros' Fantastic Beasts franchise. Depp's future in the film industry, in general, was clouded...

1 Mel Gibson Flop Is Very Bad For Lethal Weapon 5
Image
While Mel Gibson will reportedly direct Lethal Weapon 5, one recent addition to his filmography could prove bad news for the buddy cop sequel. Richard Donner was originally set to direct Lethal Weapon 5, but the legendary blockbuster veteran passed away in 2021. Donner directed the first four Lethal Weapon movies, as well as Superman and The Omen, making the filmmaker a consistent hit-maker in Hollywood and one of the more critically-celebrated blockbuster directors of the 1980s and 1990s. According to the actor himself, Mel Gibson will now both direct and star in Lethal Weapon 5.

However, Lethal Weapon 5’s new director is not as reliably well-liked as Donner. For one thing, Gibson has a long history of controversial comments, and has faced accusations revolving around homophobic, racist, misogynistic, and anti-Semitic remarks. For another, although his directorial efforts have been critically well-received, Gibson’s acting work has been less celebrated in recent decades.

From Westworld To Annihilation, No Sci-Fi Movie Is More Influential Than Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker
Image
The premise of Soviet filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky's magnum opus, "Stalker," seems deceptively simple. The titular stalker (Alexander Kaidanovsky) must guide two men, The Writer (Anatoly Solonitsyn) and The Professor (Nikolai Grinko), to and from The Zone, a mystical no man's land whose ruins remain shrouded in secrecy. Men who venture into The Zone have never returned, with the exception of the Stalker, who has made this dangerous foray into the unknown his sole source of income. The aim is to guide passengers to The Room, a space within the Zone that can make anyone's wishes come true. But do we know what we truly desire? What if our deepest urges betray our perception of who we think we are? This is one of many, many questions "Stalker" seems to pose.

What Tarkovsky manages to do with "Stalker" is astounding — he invests a rather straightforward premise with layers of thematic...

Jamie Demetriou has been on a comedic rise for several years.

In the U.K., he’s arguably best known as the creator and star of Channel 4 sitcom Stath Lets Flats, in which his inept, awkward, rude and delusional Greek-Cypriot rental agent Stath Charalambos — considered one of the best comic creations since Steve Coogan’s Alan Partridge — has won him countless fans inside the industry and out (in 2020 he won three BAFTA TV awards).

Over in the U.S. — where the show airs on HBO — he’s probably more recognizable for a growing number of short but often scene-stealing TV and film appearances, including in Fleabag (the guy with big teeth in season 1), Paddington 2 (one of the bear’s fellow prison inmates known as The Professor), The Great (playing Doctor Chekhov) and Eurovision: The Story of Fire Saga (camp artistic director Kevin Swain). He’s also due to...

Amber Heard Op-Ed Got Johnny Depp ‘Canceled,’ Hollywood Dealmaker Tells Court
Johnny Depp at an event for Waiting for the Barbarians (2019)
Longtime entertainment attorney Richard Edward Marks was called to the stand Monday in Johnny Depp’s defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard and said the “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor became radioactive because companies want “added value not negativity” from talent.

Marks, who said he has nearly 50 years of experience and has negotiated numerous deals, was hired by Depp’s legal team to look at the impact Heard’s 2018 Washington Post op-ed had on her ex-husband’s “life and reputation.”

“My general opinion is the op-ed damaged Mr. Depp, created a cancel situation if you will, harmed his reputation and his ability to get work in the Hollywood industry,” Marks told a Fairfax, Virginia, courtroom.

The Los Angeles-based attorney said he read a “voluminous” amount of files, transcripts from depositions, and news articles to familiarize himself with the case. He noted that companies and studios consider a performer’s reputation,...

Johnny Depp Lost 22.5 Million ‘Pirates’ 6 Deal After Amber Heard’s Op-Ed, Talent Manager Testifies
Johnny Depp at an event for Waiting for the Barbarians (2019)
Talent manager Jack Whigham testified Monday in Johnny Depp’s defamation trial against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, saying the impact of the Washington Post op-ed Heard wrote was “catastrophic” for the actor’s career.

Whigham spoke remotely via video from Los Angeles, and said in 2017 Depp had a very busy filming schedule. That year the actor worked on “City of Lies,” “Murder on the Orient Express,” “Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald,” and independent film “The Professor,” earning him 35 million.

Whigham, who described himself as an attorney and manager, said he also negotiated Depp’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” 6 deal in 2017, which totaled 22.5 million. But in 2019, it became clear that Disney had decided to “go in a different direction.”

In 2018, Depp filmed “Waiting for the Barbarians” for 1 million. In 2019, Whigham negotiated a 3 million deal for Depp to film “Minimata.” Whigham told the court the movie was supposed to start filming in January.

Claws Season 4 Premiere Review: Shifting Alliances
Niecy Nash, Carrie Preston, Judy Reyes, Jenn Lyon, and Karrueche Tran in Claws (2017)
It's been more than two years, but now that Claws has finally returned, Desna and her crew remain up to their fancy nails in trouble.

And Desna undertook her most recent scheme without a valuable team member on Claws Season 4 Episode 1 and Claws Season 4 Episode 2.

There remained a severe rift between Desna and Quiet Ann, with the rest of the crew caught in the middle.

Quiet Ann blamed Desna's ambition for Ann's wife Arlene being killed by The Professor on Claws Season 3 Episode 8.

Desna considered Ann ungrateful after all she had done for the ex-con lesbian, especially after Ann torched Desna's casino on Claws Season 3 Episode 10.

So who is more wrong in this situation? As these episodes begin to show, it's going to be Desna.

Sure, Ann, in the middle of numerous criminal enterprises, should never have allowed herself to fall for a cop. But she did, which played...

‘Money Heist’ Cast and Creators Reflect on Netflix’s Global Hit as the Series Comes to an End
Image
Diego Ávalos, Netflix’s VP of original content in Spain, distinctly remembers the encounter that led to his company licensing what would become its most watched non-English-language series, Spanish drama “Money Heist” (“La Casa de Papel”).

The executive’s first in-person meeting with series creator Álex Pina was a dizzying, fateful whirlwind. “He was rushing through this hotel, and he ran up to me and threw a pen drive in my hand and said, ‘You have to watch this — it’s my new show,’ and then he rushed off just as quickly.”

After the frantic rendezvous, Ávalos boarded a plane to Los Angeles and popped the drive into his laptop. When his feet hit the ground in California, he knew his next Spanish acquisition had to be “Money Heist.”

Four years later, Netflix is preparing the global launch of the long-awaited fifth and final part of its hit series, the...

A Forgotten Mel Gibson Movie Hits Netflix Next Month
Image
Mel Gibson and Sean Penn are both actors that tend to divide opinion among movie fans, but with two Academy Awards each, you can’t deny that they’re among the finest talents of their generation, regardless of how you feel about their personal beliefs or opinions. So throw them together in a prestige drama about the creation of the dictionary and you’ve got… well, you’ve got something that will interest some people a lot more than others.

The Professor and the Madman is a biographical period drama that stars Gibson as the former and Penn as the latter, which is admittedly simplifying things an awful lot. The Lethal Weapon star plays Professor James Murray, who undergoes the arduous task of compiling the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary in the 1870s. Gathering up the definition for every word in existence is no easy task, but one helpful fellow submits over 10,000 entries,...

Pll: The Perfectionists Canceled After One Season
I guess it is true; two can keep a secret if one of them is dead. Unfortunately for Pll: The Perfectionists, Freeform killed it to keep the secret of the identity of The Professor all to themselves.

It's official: Pll: The Perfectionists is deceased.

After just one season, Freeform has decided to cut the cord on the Pretty Little Liars spin-off.

Pll: The Perfectionists was rolled out as a spin-off to the mega-hit Pretty Little Liars.

The series was loosely based off the book series The Perfectionists by Sara Shepard, the author who is also behind the Pretty Little Liars book series.

The Perfectionists book series had nothing to do with the Pretty Little Liars series, but Freeform thought it would find greater success by hitching it to the Pretty Little Liars bandwagon.

Unforunately, that may have been it's greatest hinderence.

Fans of the book series were confused on the...
