Ballerina Reviews: What Are Critics Saying About Ana de Armas’ Action Sequences?
Image
After the incredible success of the John Wick movies, the franchise has moved on to the story of Eve, a ballerina-assassin training in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma. As the overall fifth film of the universe, Ballerina stars Ana de Armas in the lead role. Of course, there is no doubt that the actress is brilliant in her craft. With movies like The Gray Man and Ghosted in her roster, she has established herself as a force to be reckoned with.

The thing with spin-offs, though, is that they don’t usually work out quite like the makers would hope. John Wick is a phenomenon in itself, and going out of their way to expand the assassin universe to tell more stories was a risk in itself. However, it looks like the risk has paid off, especially if we consider early reviews for Ballerina.

Ballerina might be a...

First Reactions Hail ‘Ballerina’ as Action-Packed and a Worthy ‘John Wick’ Spinoff with Ana de Armas at Her Best
Image
Ballerina is a new action movie that we can look forward to. It takes place in the John Wick universe. It’s the fifth film in the series and takes place between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and Chapter 4. The movie stars Ana de Armas as the main character, with Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Norman Reedus in supporting roles.

Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston, and Lance Reddick reprised their original characters, with Reddick appearing on screen for the last time before his passing.

The story came from a script written by Shay Hatten, which was picked up by Lionsgate in 2017. Hatten went on to help write the scripts for the third and fourth John Wick films. Len Wiseman was chosen as the director in 2019, and Chad Stahelski, the main director of the franchise, is one of the producers.

Ana de Armas took over the lead role from Unity Phelan,...

'John Wick' Spinoff 'Ballerina' First Reviews Praise Incredible Action Movie
Image
Following in the footsteps of Keanu Reeves’ John Wick was always going to be a tough ask for Ana De Armas’ foray into the world of assassins in From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, but first reviews suggest she has risen to the task of becoming the Wick universe’s newest kick-ass assassin – even if the film does have a tricky embargo in place, and some feel let down by the film in one particular way.

Ballerina’s story takes place between the third and fourth John Wick movies, allowing fans to be thrown right back into the world they know, and one where Reeve’s dog-loving killer has not met his maker. De Armas plays Eve, an assassin on a revenge mission to avenge her father, who is doing a very John Wick thing and taking on plenty of bad guys who would happily see her dead.

Ballerina First Reactions Land As Lionsgate Comes Under Fire For "Encouraging" Positive Social Media Posts
Image
We're now just a couple of weeks away from the release of Ballerina, and the social media embargo for the John Wick spin-off movie has lifted.

The first reactions are mostly positive, and it sounds like Ballerina is a worthy addition to this incredibly popular franchise. Star Ana de Armas comes in for universal praise and the action sequences are said to be top-notch, but quite a few posts mention that the story is lacking.

Somewhat surprisingly, Keanu Reeves' appearance as John Wick is also said to be detrimental to the movie overall.

The response isn't exactly glowing across the board, but Lionsgate probably didn't need to worry too much about these social media reactions... certainly not enough to send out the following email!

Lionsgate has embargoed negative and critical reviews of ‘Ballerina’ until Wednesday, June 4 — one day before release.

With the film holding its world premiere today, only positive...

Ian McShane Shares How Conspiracy Theories Fueled John Wick's Popularity
Image
The John Wick franchise premiered in 2014 with the first film starring Keanu Reeves. The neo-noir crime film series is still ongoing over a decade later, and it's just about to further expand with the first spinoff film.

The original film series features four films so far, with a fifth on the way. The universe also includes a spinoff television show, and Ballerina, the Ana de Armas-led spinoff film. Since its release in 2014, the franchise has grossed over $1 billion, and Ian McShane addressed how conspiracy theories helped John Wick grow in an interview with Cbr's Grae Drake.

While addressing his character Winston Scott's past, McShane shared his own theories on his background. He detailed how he and the late Lance Reddick's Charon might have come from the government, and further detailed how the franchise grew from conspiracy theories.

That's why Wick is good, because it takes you away somewhere else.

How Much Money Ballerina, The First John Wick Spinoff Movie, Is Expected To Make In Its Opening Weekend
Image
Ballerina is finally arriving in movie theaters on June 6, 2025, after being pushed back a year from its original release date, and its box office projections are promising. John Wick stands as one of the most successful and influential action franchises in cinematic history, now with a reported John Wick 5 in the works. However, fans will first see the first true John Wick spinoff, following a young woman also trained as an assassin by the Ruska Roma on a mission to avenge her father.

Ana de Armas' casting and franchise clout are paying off, as Deadline reports that Ballerina is projected to gross $35-40 million in its opening weekend. This puts it ahead of the John Wick franchise's biggest opening weekend to date, as John Wick: Chapter 2 grossed $30.2 million in the first three days. However, it is also lower than the opening weekends from PG-13 action franchise movies, including The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes...

'I Started Crying': Ballerina's Ana de Armas Recalls Filming 'Horrifying' Scene for John Wick Spinoff
Image
Ballerina will debut Ana de Armas as a hard-hitting assassin, and the trailers confirm she can hold her own in action sequences. Armas said she had to prove her mettle behind the scenes, giving due credit to the stunt team.

Ana de Armas was overwhelmed by Ballerina's flamethrower scene. She recalled declining practice runs before filming, confident she could do it; thankfully, the stunt crew insisted she test out the weapon just the same. "I remember the first day the stunt team was practicing with the fire, and they told me to go do it before the shoot, and I said, 'No, no, no, I'll be fine,'" she told Entertainment Weekly. "They got the main fire guy that gets burned, and he's all covered in this sticky grease or whatever they put for protection, and they're like, 'Okay, go ahead. Just burn him.'"

That seemed like a nonchalant...

‘Ballerina’ Trailer: Ana de Armas Has Killer Showdown With Keanu Reeves’ John Wick in Gory Spinoff
Image
It’s now only a few months until the “John Wick” franchise is back on the big screen — this time, with the Oscar-nominated Ana de Armas in the lead.

The new trailer for “Ballerina” shows de Armas in action as Eve Macarro, a Russian ballerina-turned-assassin with an eye for vengeance against the men who killed her family. But de Armas isn’t alone, as Keanu Reeves makes his anticipated return as John Wick.

“Ballerina” takes place in between “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum” and “John Wick: Chapter 4,” expanding the assassin role originally played by Unity Phelan with de Armas’ take on the character. The film comes two years since audiences saw Reeves in the fourth entry, which became the highest-grossing installment in the series with a worldwide gross of over $440 million. Altogether, the first four “John Wick” films grossed over $1 billion worldwide.

One Of The Best John Wick Characters Is Getting A Spin-Off – With A Very Appropriate Director
Image
When you want to add a sense of legitimacy and an unrivaled cool factor into your action franchise, you cast Donnie Yen. If you want to take full advantage of the legendary Hong Kong action star's talents, well, you hire him as the director of your action franchise. Leave it to the "John Wick" property to potentially bring together the best of both worlds for its upcoming spinoff, centered on Yen's ultra-cool, scene-stealing assassin Caine from "John Wick: Chapter 4."

That easily takes the title for the most exciting news of the day, courtesy of Collider. In a recent interview with the outlet, Yen was promoting his work as both director and lead of his newest film "The Prosecutor," which is set to arrive in select theaters later this month. But, naturally, the topic of "John Wick" came up. Yen went ahead and dropped quite the bombshell on interviewer Steve Weintraub,...

Gh Star Cameron Mathison Family Safe, But Home Lost in Devastating Wildfire Tragedy

General Hospital spoilers and updates reveal heartbreaking news; as viewers watched Sonny Corinthos’ (Maurice Benard) fictitious home destroyed by fire, it happened to actor Cameron Mathison. General Hospital Spoilers – Sad Real Life Coincidences

The episode where Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell) fictitiously is caught in a fire and burned was ironically and sadly pre-empted for news of massive fires in California.

One of the areas that burned included Cameron Mathison’s real-life home, but unlike what happened fictitiously to Michael, neither Cameron or anyone in the house was hurt.

‘The View’: Whoopi and Ana Navarro Clash Over How Panicked People Should Be About Trump
Image
The first segment of “The View” on Monday ended in a heated clash between Whoopi Goldberg and Ana Navarro, as the ABC hosts debated just how panicked people should be about Donald Trump’s second term.

The discussion started as the women broke down the president-elect’s weekend appearance on “Meet the Press,” where he made more threats against various institutions and people he dislikes, specifically saying that the Jan. 6 investigative committee should be thrown in jail.

When pressed on whether he’d specifically direct his choice to lead the FBI to send them to jail, though, Trump said he wouldn’t.

“He’s telling them to do it through ‘Meet the Press,’ if he hasn’t done it in private already,” Navarro argued. “And he’s appointing people who are 100% loyal to him, and who know that if they want to keep their jobs, they have to do what he wants them to do.

Jason Statham's Wild Sci-Fi Remake Is Dominating Streaming 16 Years After Its Release
Image
Jason Statham has made a name for himself in the action genre, and his films grossed millions of dollars at the box office. Although the British actor is usually typecast in the action-thriller genre, one of his underrated sci-fi films has become a new hit on streaming platforms.

In 2008, Statham starred in Death Race, which was a remake of the 1975 classic Death Race 2000. The sci-fi, high-octane action thriller has recently switched platforms, and it's already a hit on social media, taking over the Top 10 and positioning itself in the eighth position, ScreenRant reports. The film bested Megamind and Ninja Assasin, making a strong debut on the streaming platform.

Ballerina: John Wick Director's Reshoots on Ana de Armas Action Movie Clarified
Image
Whenever a studio pushes back a release date, there's an assumption that the movie in question has problems. Sometimes a movie is shifted on the release schedule to avoid bigger competition, and sometimes feedback at test screenings results in heading back into production to get things just right. The latter appears to be the case with the John Wick spinoff Ballerina, now being presented as From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. Initial press suggested that producer and captain of the John Wick franchise, Chad Stahelski, was coming in to shoot additional scenes to ramp up the film's action, but a new report has now confirmed that Stahelski took over some of the additional photography when director Len Wiseman fell ill during filming.

While it was originally suggested that Stahelski was brought in as the original cut of the movie was not in line with the standards expected of the franchise,...

One of the biggest twists in the second season of Lost was when Michael murdered Ana Lucia and Libby. Not only did this moment end Ana Lucia and Libby's run on the show, but it also turned Michael into a murderer, leaving a huge impact on all of Michael's future appearances on the show. As well as this, the act allowed Michael to betray the trust of Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley, leading them all into a trap set by The Others, while Michael was given a boat off the island, setting up the plot for the show's third season.

This changed the tone of the show, allowing a shift in dynamics between the second and third seasons. The second season focused more on the mystery of the island, with the survivors living on the beach. It was clear that season 3 would be completely different. Season 3 was more based on the history of The Others,...

The Next Nordic Generation competition strand of the Norwegian Film Festival in Haugesund is where some of the most gifted talents from the Nordics such as Gustav Møller (“The Guilty”) or Katrine Brocks (“The Great Silence”) pitched their graduation films in recent years, before making their international breakthroughs.

This year’s curated program of 10 graduation films from Nordic film schools will be showcased Aug. 21 in Haugesund, Norway.

The 10 short films were selected by a jury consisting of producer Elisa Fernanda Pirir of Stær Film, filmmakers Gunnbjörg Gunnarsdóttir (“Victoria Must Go”) and Fredrik S. Hana (“Code Name: Nagasaki”), in association with program coordinator Christian Høkaas.

“Fear, confusion, dark humor, power, anxiety and love. Anger, love, power. This year’s slate offers a lot of strong emotions, in-keeping with the Scandinavian tradition of dark humour and relationship drama,” said Pirir who’s enjoyed the “playful and daring selection.”

Nobody 2 Casts Potential Second Villain With Emmy-Nominated Jumanji Actor
Image
Colin Hanks joins Nobody 2 as a corrupt sheriff in the sequel to the Bob Odenkirk-led action film. Hanks joins fellow franchise newcomer Sharon Stone, who is set to play the main villain of the sequel. With law enforcement actually involved in the plot and proving to be corrupt, it can offer a fresh twist on Nobody's formula.

With the movie's main villain already set with an Oscar nominee, Nobody 2 has seemingly found another villain in Emmy nominee Colin Hanks. Development on a sequel to the Bob Odenkirk-led action hit has properly been gaining steam over the past year when a script was completed and Odenkirk, Connie Nielsen and Christopher Lloyd were all confirmed to be returning to the fold. After initially expecting Ilya Naishuller to return to the director's chair, Nobody 2 went in favor of bringing on May the Devil Take You's Timo Tjahjanto to direct.

John Wick Sequel Series Now in the Works
Image
The universe of John Wick continues to expand with a TV series set after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4 now in the works. Since the release of the first film, John Wick, in 2014, the franchise has become one of the biggest in Hollywood, with each new film grossing more than the previous entry. John Wick: Chapter 4 was released in 2023 and seemed to mark the end of the series as the main character was killed off, but the franchise is far from dead.

According to Deadline, Lionsgate is developing a television series called John Wick: Under the High Table. The series will be written by Robert Levine, with John Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski as an executive producer and director of the pilot episode. The series is described as picking up right after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, which is said to show how the fallout...

Keanu Reeves Upcoming John Wick Show Already Sounds Better Than The Franchise's First Spinoff
Image
Keanu Reeves will executive-produce John Wick: Under the High Table, a more exciting project than the franchise's first spinoff show, The Continental. Under the High Table could be very different from The Continental since it is a sequel instead of a prequel. That means it could have original actors reprise their recognizable roles. The Continental wasn't a great way for the John Wick franchise to begin its foray into spinoffs, but Under the High Table seems much more promising.

Keanu Reeves' new John Wick show has just been announced, and it already sounds better than the franchise's first spinoff. There's a slew of upcoming John Wick spinoffs and movies in various stages of development following the ending of John Wick: Chapter 4. From Ana de Armas' confirmed Ballerina spinoff to John Wick 5 and even rumored projects like a movie focusing on Halle Berry's Sofia, the world of assassins is constantly growing.

John Wick 4 Sequel TV Series Under The High Table In The Works At Lionsgate
Image
John Wick is dead, long live John Wick! Whilst Keanu Reeves' mythic hitman may have seemingly met his maker on the steps of the Sacré-Cœur in John Wick: Chapter 4 (we never actually saw him croak it!), the John Wick Universe has continued to expand in his absence with the likes of hotelier origin series The Continental, Ana De Armas' upcoming quite literal bullet ballet Ballerina, and an in-development spin-off movie centred around Donnie Yen's blind assassin Caine. Now, per Deadline's reporting, The Old Man co-creator Robert Levine is penning John Wick: Under The High Table, a new TV series set directly after the end of the last Wick film.

Franchise star Reeves and Wickiverse head honcho Chad Stahelski are aboard to executive produce the series, with Stahelski — who helmed all four of the mainline Wick movies — set to direct the pilot episode. Little is known at this stage...

Bob Odenkirk's Nobody 2 Can Finally Answer The First Movie's Biggest Mystery
Image
Nobody 2 can finally solve the mystery of who made the phone call to free Hutch in the first movie. Ana de Armas' upcoming Ballerina won't be the only rival to the John Wick franchise with the release of Nobody 2 in 2025. The ending of Nobody sets up an exciting start for the sequel, hinting at more dangerous adventures for Hutch and his family.

Bob Odenkirk is confirmed to return to the action genre for the long-awaited Nobody 2, and the sequel can finally solve the biggest lingering mystery from the first movie. Released in 2021, Nobody starred Odenkirk as Hutch Mansell, a seemingly mild-mannered suburban family man who turned out to have a storied history as a government assassin. He took on the entire Russian mafia in what turned out to be one of the most spectacular action movies of the past decade.

A sequel has been in development ever since,...

How Old Dakota Johnson & Jamie Dornan Are In The Fifty Shades Of Grey Movies
Image
Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan were well-cast in Fifty Shades, matching the book characters' ages and descriptions accurately. Despite being slightly older than their characters, both actors brought experience and skill to navigate the intense themes of the film series. The careful consideration of casting was evident, as the box office success of Fifty Shades proves their faithful portrayal of the book characters.

Curiously, Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan don't exactly match the ages of their characters in Fifty Shades of Grey. Based on E.L. James' 2011 book Fifty Shades of Grey, the film revolves around a recent college graduate, Ana Steele (Johnson), who captures the attention of enigmatic businessman Christian Grey (Dornan). Both actors were well-suited and age-appropriate for their roles, aligning with the book characters' descriptions. However, determining their exact ages can be challenging without reference to the book, despite both characters celebrating birthdays during the series.

John Wick Director Outlines Franchise's Future Beyond Chapter 4
Image
John Wick: Chapter 4 director Chad Stahelski insists he has plans for many more chapters in the eponymous action franchise amid the development of John Wick 5.

Speaking with Inverse, Stahelski revealed there are notebooks filled with ideas for potential sequels beyond John Wick 5, which Lionsgate confirmed is in the works back in May. However, Stahelski admits a story for John Wick 5 hasn't been properly fleshed out yet and doesn't want to do another sequel just for the sake of making money.

The Worst Movies of 2023, So Far
Image

It's almost as though, for every great movie, there are a couple of awful ones to balance the scale and keep movie critics occupied with continual emotional shifts. While this is unavoidable, given that not all films wind up in good hands, some good projects have gone down the wrong path this year. So, we're here to give our unbiased view of the year's worst films, which range from spy thrillers starring Chris Evans...

In contrast, Lionsgate's film division will be skipping Sdcc this year despite having multiple projects on the way, including John Wick spinoff Ballerina, EXPEND4BLES and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. John Wick 4 Director's Cut Is On the Way
Image
More content for John Wick: Chapter 4 will soon be firing away as a director's cut of the latest sequel in the eponymous neo-noir action series is being worked on by Chad Stahelski.

Speaking to Comic Book Movie, Stahelski confirmed he's fine-tuning his cut of Chapter 4, claiming it's nearly complete. The John Wick series helmer admitted he had to chop some interesting parts of the movie along the way for the cut. "I've been working on the Director's Cut, the extended cut, which we've almost finished. There's about another, I think, 10 to 15 minutes we put back in. We cut out a big chunk of Berlin, a whole character called The Frau, which is a pretty funny scene with John, and another scene between him and Tracker, a few other little action beats that we put back in," he said.

Ballerina Producer Explains Why The John Wick Spin-Off Took 5 Years To Make [Exclusive]
Image
Director Chad Stahelski and star Keanu Reeves have once again proven there's an endless appetite for exquisitely crafted combat sequences, with "John Wick: Chapter 4" breaking franchise box office records. The latest installment in the massively popular action saga ramped things up considerably, delivering a high-octane 3-hour-long action cinema masterclass, cementing the "John Wick" movies' standing as bonafide blockbusters. That's impressive considering the first "John Wick" film was initially expected to be yet another flop for the then-struggling Reeves.

"John Wick: Chapter 4" looks set to continue the series trend of making a lot more money than its predecessor, which in Hollywood means one thing: more of the same is coming. In fact, that's been the case since 2017, when "John Wick: Chapter 2" made $171 million at the box office — more than double the first entry's take. Naturally, Lionsgate and Thunder Road Productions hastily cooked up some spin-off ideas in the...

John Wick 4 Box Office Is Best Opening for R-Rated Movie Since 2020
Image
John Wick: Chapter 4 is raking in a huge, record-breaking opening weekend. The film, which premiered in theaters on March 24, is the fourth outing for Keanu Reeves' titular action hero, who made his debut in the 2014 original film John Wick. That original outing followed the retired assassin seeking revenge for the death of his dog and the theft of his car, a mission that has since taken audiences into a huge expanded world of gun-toting mayhem.

Per Deadline, the John Wick: Chapter 4 opening weekend is now projected to take in a staggering gross of $73.5 million this weekend. This franchise-best opening gross is also the best of a surprisingly strong March, which also featured Scream VI and Creed III grossing franchise-best openings, with the latter also nabbing the best opening for any film about sports. John Wick: Chapter 4 has now also earned the highest opening for an R-rated movie...

World Athletics lifts suspension of Russia over doping, ban for Ukraine war continues
Image
Monaco, March 24 (Ians) The World Athletics Council has agreed to reinstate the Russian Federation (RusAF) following seven years of suspension due to egregious institutional doping violations but the ban on Russia and Belarus over the war in Ukraine continues.

Because of this, athletes, officials and supporting personnel from Russia and Belarus are still excluded from competition for the foreseeable future due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The decision was taken during the World Athletics Council meeting held in Monaco on Thursday.

The Council approved the Russia Taskforce’s recommendation that RusAF, which has been suspended for seven years due to doping, be reinstated after meeting all the requirements of the Reinstatement plan, which has been confirmed by an independent audit.

However, RusAF will be required to comply with a set of 35 ‘Special Conditions’ that are intended to ensure that RusAf’s anti-doping reforms remain in place and continue to operate effectively.

Why Is Netflix's Blonde Movie Rated Nc-17?
Image
The new Marilyn Monroe movie Blonde has been controversial from the start, but it raises the question of why Blonde is rated Nc-17. Blonde stars Ana de Armas as Monroe, the "blonde bombshell" who became a pop culture icon and sex symbol before her untimely death in 1962. Director Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) adapted the ambitious novel of the same name by author Joyce Carol Oates, which took several liberties with the life of Monroe. Netflix's Blonde has been the subject of controversy since it was announced, with the streamer shifting release dates early on due to the graphic content of the film after it was completed in 2019.

Netflix brought in a new editor to help "curb the excesses of the movie" and prepare it for release according to Dominik, which he says actually ended up making the film better. Oates' 2000 Marilyn...

Ana de Armas Worries Her Nude "Blonde" Scenes Will Go Viral: "Upsetting Just to Think About"
Image
Netflix's highly anticipated Marilyn Monroe biopic, "Blonde," starring Ana de Armas will finally make its streaming debut on Sept. 30, and people are anxious to see how the film's leading lady brings a Hollywood icon's story to life. Leading up to the movie's worldwide release, "Blonde" has made headlines for de Armas's casting, a reportedly haunted set, and, most notably, its Nc-17 rating - a Netflix first that surprised many.

"You can't really control what they do and how they take things out of context."

Though de Armas previously said she was confused by "Blonde"'s adult rating - aka the kiss of death for some movies' success - she's now expressing concern over the possibility of her nude scenes circulating once viewers see the film. "I know what's going to go viral and it's disgusting," she told Variety in a September profile. "It's upsetting just to think about it.
