10 horror video games that feel like Ari Aster movies
Image
Ari Aster has quickly established himself as a major force in modern cinema. He wrote and directed Hereditary and Midsommar, two of the best horror movies of the 2010s. He's since followed them with Beau Is Afraid and Eddington, a bit of a pivot, yet they still carry his trademark dark humor, some violence, and, of course, dark themes.

For video game fans, some of Aster's works can remind them of popular games. They can run the gamut from action to pure horror, with others more psychological to fit his motif. They can be big games or smaller ones, which also suits Aster's mixing of different budget scales. For fans of Aster and his filmography, these 10 video games can be a good way to feel the same scares.

Weird West

Aster's latest movie, Eddington, is a "neo-Western" with some satire to go with the thrills. That's why Weird West may work,...

New ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Teaser Shows What Happens When You Try to Touch the Golden God’s Hair
Image
Just one day before the premiere of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17, Dennis Reynolds is coming out to confirm that he does not wear a wig — but a little foundation on a big night never hurt anyone.

One of the foundational truths on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is that, when it comes to personal grooming, the Golden God spares no expense and makes no mistakes, except for the occasional chemical peel here or there. Starting in the show’s very first episode, “The Gang Gets Racist,” Dennis’ self-obsession and anxiety about his perfect appearance have always been key plot points in the Gang’s schemes, but given It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s record-breaking longevity and the realities of linear time, here in 2025, Dennis — and the rest of the Gang — aren’t quite at their “boys are out tonight” best anymore.

Although the decades have made their marks...

Gimli Actor Reveals One Of His Most Hilarious Lines Was Improvised In Lord Of The Rings
Image
The Lord of the Rings star John Rhys-Davies revealed that one of his most hilarious and memorable lines was improvised. Appearing in the celebrated Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings movies, Rhys-Davies portrays Gimli, a dwarf who accompanies Legolas and more on numerous endeavors. Throughout the franchise, Gimli demonstrates loyalty and combat ability and has always been a source of humor.

As played by Rhys-Davies, Gimli was introduced in The Lord of the Rings:The Fellowship of the Ring, where he joins Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) in destroying the One Ring. That movie also features a now-iconic moment between Gimli and Legolas (Orlando Bloom), when the former shouts not to grab his beard.

During the By Beard and Hammer! Adventures with John Rhys-Davies panel at the Denver Fan Expo, which ScreenRant was in attendance for, the Lord of the Rings actor revealed thathe improvised "not the beard!" As Rhys-Davies explained, he landed unsteadily while filming,...

Lorde Teases ‘Virgin’ B-Sides, Says One of Her Favorite Songs Was Cut at the ‘Last Minute’
Image
Lorde has revealed several behind-the-scenes facts about her latest album, Virgin, including that one of her favorite songs didn’t make the final track list.

In a post on social media Monday, Lorde wrote that she cut a song from the album at the “last minute because I thought it diluted the vision.” She added that it was one of her “absolute favs” that she wrote with Fabiana Palladino, who also worked on “Current Affairs” and “If She Could See Me Now.”

That’s not the only unreleased song either,...

Lorde ‘Virgin’ Review: Thriving in Uncertainty
Image
When Lorde emerged in 2013 with her global hit “Royals,” there was much about her musical talents that belied her 16 years. One thing that didn’t was her sense of certainty in her critiques of the elites and the way we idolize them. Her debut album, Pure Heroine, was similarly filled with songs that exuded a fundamentally teenage assuredness about what’s right and wrong in mass culture.

As she’s gotten older, Lorde has turned her focus toward the messy emotions of young adulthood, on 2017’s Melodrama, and declaring authoritatively on the opening track of 2021’s Solar Power that “if you’re looking for a savior, that’s not me.” Her fourth album, Virgin, sees her embracing uncertainty even more unapologetically.

The album’s first track, “Hammer,” opens with a hesitancy—“I’m ready to feel like I don’t have the answers”—that it doesn’t care to resolve,...

Lorde Debuts New Album 'Virgin' - Listen Now!
Image
Lorde just released her new album!

On Friday (June 27), the 28-year-old Grammy-winning singer dropped her fourth studio album titled Virgin. The new album is a follow-up to her 2021 album Solar Power.

The new album features her recently released singles “What Was That,” “Man of the Year,” and “Hammer.”

Keep reading to find out more…In a new interview with Zane Lowe, Lorde looked back at the struggles of rocketing to stardom as a teenager.

”I think for a long time I’ve tried to be very binary about it,” Lorde shared. “When I’m in the studio or when I’m in America, I’m an artist. When I go home to New Zealand, I’m not an artist and I turn that part of myself off. It’s impossible obviously.”

She went on to say that making Solar Power was an attempt to break that pattern and merge the two modes of her life.

Lorde Performs ‘Virgin’ in Full at Surprise Glastonbury Set
Image
Lorde celebrated the release of Virgin by performing the entire album live for the first time at a surprise, early-morning set at Glastonbury.

The musician confirmed the set Thursday night and took the stage at 11:30 a.m. Friday, with a very full crowd there to meet her, despite such little notice and the non-traditional time slot. (Per the BBC, so many people showed up that Glastonbury had to close access to the Woodsies field due to overcrowding concerns.)

Lorde Summer Officially Arrives With New Album ‘Virgin’
Image
Lorde is finally back, as Virgin, the New Zealand superstar’s first album in nearly four years, officially released on Friday.

Lorde preceded the new album with the singles “What Was That,” “Man of the Year,” and “Hammer,” the latter of which also serves as Virgin’s opening track. So far, “What Was That” has been the most popular song, charting at 36 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and amassing over 80 million streams on Spotify. The prospect of new music has helped boost her catalog as well, as “Ribs,” her much-beloved track from debut album Pure Heroine, finally charted on the Hot 100 back in May after her viral, chaotic pop-up in Washington Square Park back in April.

Virgin follows Lorde’s 2021 Solar Power, which represented a bit of a sonic and aesthetic departure from the synth-pop she’d been associated with. Solar Power was more divisive among fans and critics and...

Lorde Is Brilliantly Reborn on ‘Virgin’
Image
Days before Lorde released her fourth album, Virgin, the pop superstar stood in the middle of Brooklyn club Baby’s All Right basked under a cerulean-blue glow as she shared song snippets from her new project and danced with fans. Dressed in a white, nearly see-through dress with glitter on her face, Lorde threw her hands up toward the venue’s disco ball and looked like an ethereal reincarnation of herself. With Virgin, Lorde excavates parts of herself she has yet to contend with on the public stage — from her...

Lorde Talks New Album Virgin and Mdma Therapy with Stephen Colbert: Watch
Image
Ahead of the release of her new album, Virgin, this Friday, Lorde stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for an interview on Tuesday evening.

Lorde and Colbert began by discussing the x-ray-themed album cover of Virgin, which Colbert deemed to be “the most revealing and least erotic photo [he’s] ever seen.” The pair then discussed Lorde’s pop-up appearance in Washington Square Park in April ahead of the release of lead single “What Was That,” which was initially halted by the NYPD. “The antiterrorism unit was being very intense,” said Lorde.

Later, the two discussed Lorde’s upcoming “Ultrasound” tour, and how she underwent Mdma therapy to try and shed her lifelong stage fright affliction. It worked particularly well for the 28-year-old singer: “Literally, I woke up the next day, and I was like, ‘Oh, it’s over. I know it’s over.” Watch the interview below.

Matthew McConaughey reuniting with True Detective creator on a feature adaptation of the Mike Hammer novels
Matthew McConaughey at an event for Mud - Sur les rives du Mississippi (2012)
Matthew McConaughey and Nic Pizzolatto are at it again! After joining forces for a chilling season of Pizzolatto’s True Detective, the duo will team up for a feature adaptation of Mickey Spillane’s and Max Allan Collins’ Mike Hammer novels. The project hails from Skydance, which plans to develop the series for the silver screen. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger will produce alongside Entertainment 360’s Guymon Casady, Benjamin Forkner, and Ken F. Levin. Collins serves as an executive producer, and Jane Spillane co-produces.

Mike Hammer emerged from a smoke-filled alley with the 1947-published novel I, the Jury. Hardboiled crime fiction fans quickly embraced Hammer as an investigator worth turning pages for, quickly transforming him into one of the genre’s most beloved characters. You’d be a fool to underestimate Mike Hammer’s influence. The hardened detective’s exploits helped inform the creation of icons like Dirty Harry,...

‘Quatermass’ Restored as Hammer’s Sci-Fi Legacy Lives On
Image
Hammer Films continues its restoration campaign with the long-awaited release of The Quatermass Xperiment in a 4K Limited Collector’s Edition, bringing one of British science fiction’s most formative texts back into the spotlight. The release is available now, with its equally influential sequel Quatermass 2 currently up for pre-order.

Premiering 70 years ago, The Quatermass Xperiment marked a defining moment for Hammer, laying the foundations for a distinctly British take on sci-fi horror. Directed by Val Guest and based on the work of writer Nigel Kneale, the film follows a manned spaceflight that ends in disaster when one astronaut returns to Earth irrevocably changed. What begins as a standard recovery mission quickly spirals into a creeping terror as the lone survivor’s mutation progresses, putting humanity on a collision course with the unknown.

While its atmosphere, paranoia and stark black-and-white visuals have cemented its reputation for decades, this new...

Will Patton and Mark O'Brien in Hammer (2019)
‘The Countess’ Removes the Sensationalism from Countess Bathory’s Story [Murder Made Fiction]
Will Patton and Mark O'Brien in Hammer (2019)
Complicated or Stilted?

Jenn and I have reached the end of our month exploring texts on Countess Elizabeth (or Erzsebet) Báthory. The 17th century noble woman was accused of torturing and murdering young girls, but over time her crimes have taken on a life of their own. Listen to our primer on the historical figure.

Did she really bathe in a bathtub of blood? Did she really kill 650 people? Did she consort with a witch?

The answer is probably no. And after inflammatory texts like Hammer’s Countess Dracula (listen) or Eli Roth’s sensational modern day take in Hostel: Part II (listen), it’s interesting to see writer/director/star Julie Delpy‘s more grounded take.

In 2009’s The Countess, Delpy plays Erzsebet Báthory, a stern, determined widow who doesn’t take flack from men. After being propositioned by a suitor she deems unworthy of her stature (William Hurt...

The Deadpool & Wolverine Character Who Almost Picked Up Thor's Hammer Mjölnir
Image
In Kenneth Branagh's 2011 fantasy clunker "Thor," it was explained that the title demigod (Chris Hemsworth) could only lift his magical hammer weapon -- called Mjölnir -- if he was "worthy." It's never quite explained what qualities one must possess in order to be worthy, but it has something to do with honorable behavior, a willingness to make sacrifices, and generally being a decent person. Only once one has proven themselves will they be permitted to pick up the weapon and smash people's heads into a bloody pulp.

In Joss Whedon's 2015 superhero mashup "Avengers: Age of Ultron," Thor dared his superhero co-workers to try lifting the hammer, but because they weren't worthy, it remained infinitely heavy. Later in the film, the android Vision (Paul Bettany) lifted the hammer, no problem, possibly because he's an artificial being. Then, in 2019's "Avengers: Endgame," Captain America (Chris Evans) was able to fling...

The film, which is presently enjoying tremendous success in theaters all over the world, has numerous Easter Eggs that fans are constantly finding and counting.

Namely, it was recently revealed that the writers had several interesting ideas for the movie, but not all made it into the final cut. One of the more interesting ones was a scene involving Deadpool and the Avengers, which the writers described in full detail, and we...

Hammer: Heroes, Legends and Monsters documentary celebrates the studio’s 90th anniversary
Image
Although Hammer Films was founded by comedian and businessman William Hinds in 1934 and the company produced films in a variety of genres, they’re best known for the horror films they produced from 1955 through the ’70s. The company ceased production as of 1979, and remained dormant until it was revived in 2007. Several productions have come along in the years since then, and John Gore, a 20-time Tony, Emmy and Olivier-winning entertainment producer who is known for his live theater company the John Gore Organization, stepped up to acquire the company in 2023. So the future of Hammer Films is looking promising – and with the company celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, Deadline reports that they’re teaming up with Sky and Deep Fusion Films to make Hammer: Heroes, Legends and Monsters, a 90-minute documentary that will premiere in November.

The Problem With The New Doctor Jekyll Movie
Image
Doctor Jekyll presents a refreshing twist by casting a female villain, played by the delightful Eddie Izzard. The film hints at Nina Jekyll being a transgender woman, but fails to explore or address this aspect effectively. Doctor Jekyll misses an opportunity to make a bold statement on gender identity, relying too much on ambiguity.

Doctor Jekyll updates a horror classic with an added twist: its titular villain is a woman. The Hammer horror film was released to UK audiences last year, and will be released in the United States on 2nd August. Doctor Nina Jekyll and her murderous alter-ego, Rachel Hyde, are played by comic legend Eddie Izzard, who is delightful in the role. Izzard is genderfluid, and the film implies that her version of Doctor Jekyll is a transgender woman. It won't be the first time a Hammer Film Productions manifestation of Jekyll and Hyde introduced gender into its premise.

Maxxxine – Review

Director Ti West and actor Mia Goth are back with a third film in the X horror series. Maxxxine is a sequel to 2022’s X, while the second in the series, Pearl (also 2022), was a prequel. The first film, X, was a surprise hit at SXSW with audiences and critics, a kind of fun, tongue-in-cheek homage to both horror and porno films of the late 1970s and early 1980s, where the owner of a strip joint and his pals set out in make a porno film titled “The Farmers’ Daughters” at a rural house they have rented from an elderly couple, but without telling the old folks what kind of film they are making. Mia Goth plays in dual roles as one of the actresses in the porno, Maxine, and the elderly farm wife,...

The unbelievable, untold life story of the late Sir Christopher Lee is being brought to the screen in a new documentary. Lee is one of the most prolific British actors of all-time, starring in multiple Hammer Horror films (most notably as Count Dracula), the James Bond franchise, playing Saruman in The Lord of the Rings, and Count Dooku in Star Wars.

Documentary filmmaker Jon Spira is telling Lee's story in a new feature film documentary. Before starring in major Hollywood movies, Lee was famously a spy during World War II, and even helped capture Nazi war criminals.

Mortal Kombat 2 Set Photos Tease The Arrival Of Two Major Video Game Characters
Image
Mortal Kombat 2 will introduce the characters Shao Kahn and Kitana, and their arrival has been teased in new set photos. Shao Kahn previously conquered Kitana's realm and raised her to become his personal assassin. Mortal Kombat 2 has the potential to provide a more faithful representation of the characters compared to previous adaptations.

A pair of new photos from the set of Mortal Kombat 2 has teased the arrival of two of the franchise’s biggest characters. Based on the hit video game series, Mortal Kombat 2 serves as the follow-up to the 2021 reboot that starred Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, and Josh Lawson as a group of Earthrealm warriors targeted by the sorcerer Shang Tsung before they can compete in the titular interdimensional martial arts contest. While the first movie introduced several key characters from the video games, Mortal Kombat 2 is also set to feature characters such as Johnny Cage,...

Doctor Jekyll Trailer: Eddie Izzard Is The Terrifying Boss In New Hammer Horror
Image
Horror stories don't get much more iconic than Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 gothic novella Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde, which has been brought to screens big and small for years since its publication. Horror film studios, meanwhile, don't get much more iconic than Hammer. So when you combine the two, it's hopefully a case of two great tastes tasting great together. The production company returns with a brand new adaptation of the tome, and while we previously brought you :a[an exclusive look at Eddie Izzard starring]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/eddie-izzard-doctor-jekyll-new-hammer-film-october-release-date-confirmed-exclusive/' } in Doctor Jekyll, now here comes the trailer, full of suspense and subterfuge…

2023’s New Dracula Movie Continues His Decades-Spanning Rotten Tomatoes Curse
Image
The Last Voyage of Demeter continues a disappointing trend of Dracula movies receiving low scores on Rotten Tomatoes. The last good Dracula movie was Bram Stoker's Dracula released in 1992. Since then, every Dracula movie has been rated "rotten."

The Last Voyage of Demeter is the latest live-action Dracula movie, but it, unfortunately, continues a bad Rotten Tomatoes trend. The 2023 movie follows the crew of a ship as they try to survive an ocean voyage between Transylvania and London, but they're being hunted by Dracula, who is also on board the ship. This is far from the first time Dracula has been adapted for the big screen, as it follows the iconic 1930s Bela Lugosi franchise, the Hammer series, and a string of big-budget high-concept movies. However, The Last Voyage of Demeter is the first time a Dracula-at-sea story has been told.

The movie currently has a 38% score on Rotten Tomatoes,...

Dracula (2020)
The Last Voyage of the Demeter review – Dracula horror is lost at sea
Dracula (2020)
A chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, set upon a ship, is expanded to a gory 2-hour film, an idea that works better in theory than in practice

As Universal continues to find creative ways to rework its iconic monster movies in the shadow of the iconically disastrous Dark Universe (a set of interconnected horrors cancelled after Tom Cruise’s Mummy wrapped up with a loss), there’s an alluring elevator pitch at the heart of their latest offering. Rather than retelling Bram Stoker’s Dracula in full once again, why not take one chapter, The Captain’s Log, detailing his journey on boat from Romania to England, and dig into what happened to the crew members he feasted on?

But coming just months after Renfield, this year’s other novel spin on Dracula, focused on the cursed count’s even more cursed aide, it’s another idea that works...

10 Best Super Mario Bros. Power-Ups Of All Time, Ranked
Image
The Super Mario Bros. games have featured a wide variety of power-ups over the years, but some of these enhancements have proven to be more powerful or iconic than others. Starting with the very first Super Mushroom that players pick up in World 1-1 of the original Nes game, the power-up lineage includes abilities inspired by animals, elements, enemies, and more. Although each one offers a unique improvement over Mario's default state, players will tend to gravitate toward certain favorites over time.

Some Super Mario Bros. games have had a bigger impact on the power-up canon than others. Super Mario Bros. 3, one of the best Mario games to play before Wonder, has a legacy of pickups that lasts to this day, and the first couple of New Super Mario Bros. titles freshened things up with some exciting new additions. Certain entries power-ups also appear in 3D Mario titles,...

Skydance developing new Mike Hammer movie based on the iconic Mickey Spillane detective
Image
Brutal and violent, Mike Hammer is a no-holds-barred private investigator created by Mickey Spillane and featured in novels, movies, TV shows, comics, and more. Mike Hammer is set to return to the big screen as Skydance has acquired the rights to the franchise and is planning to develop a movie based on the iconic character.

No writers, directors, or actors attached to the new Mike Hammer movie at this time, which is hardly a surprise given the ongoing WGA and SAG strikes. The rights to the character have been in dispute for quite some time. Mickey Spillane died in 2006, just one month after the death of his manager. The manager’s estate tried to claim ownership of Mike Hammer, but following years in court, those rights reverted to Spillane’s estate.

Starting with the novel I, the Jury, Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer novels have sold over 250 million copies worldwide.

Iron Man & Thor Merge Into One Unstoppable Hero In Stunning MCU Cosplay
Image
A talented cosplayer brings Iron Man and Thor's MCU looks together with an impressive level of detail. As founding members of the original MCU Avengers, Tony Stark and Thor Odinson fought together multiple times throughout the Infinity Saga. However, Stark never gave Thor any technological upgrade and Thor never gave Stark any Asgardian gear. This missed opportunity hasn't gone unnoticed by fans, as an Iron Man/Thor fusion makes for some visually stunning cosplay.

On Reddit, user u/JohnPhnow shares pictures of their girlfriend wearing a homemade cosplay that merges Iron Man's Mark 46 armor with Thor's helmet, cape, and Mjolnir. The blue and gray color scheme also adds a touch of Rescue, and the extra arc reactors on the torso suggests this mashup could have been one of the most powerful Iron Man suits of armor had it been introduced in the MCU. Director Chris McKay wanted to do everything he could to tie this film back to the original 1931 Dracula film starring Bela Lugosi. Galaxy Quest TV Series In Development Again
Image
Thus far in its development, the fate of the Galaxy Quest TV series has been less "never give up, never surrender!" and more "eh… Give up. Surrender". A version long in the works at Paramount TV and Amazon never left space dock, but now Paramount is trying again, setting a new version up at Paramount+.

According to Variety, there are no creatives attached yet – Mark Johnson, who was an executive producer on the 1999 movie, which starred Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell and Daryl Mitchell as a ragtag group of actors from a star Trek-alike canceled TV show who are recruited by aliens who think they're real heroes to fight a dangerous threat.

While things seemed to be moving along with writer Robert Gordon (who was one of the scribes on the movie), problems began over casting the original stars, and that was compounded by...

L.A.’s Hammer Museum Reopens With 40,000 Square Feet of New Gallery Space
Image
“For so long we’ve been kind of a hidden gem,” says Connie Butler, chief curator of the Hammer Museum, which opened in 1990 at the base of an office building in Westwood. In the more than three decades since, the Hammer has gained an international reputation for its talked-about contemporary art shows and culture-shifting programming, including its biennial Made in L.A. exhibition, but the museum always lacked a marquee street presence.

That changes March 25, when the final phase of a multiyear revamp will be unveiled.

L.A.-based architect Michael Maltzan, who was first commissioned in 2000 to create a master renovation and expansion plan for the Hammer, has designed what he calls a new “welcoming porch” at the corner of Wilshire and Westwood boulevards to welcome visitors. “For the first time really, we will have a proper museum entrance,” says Butler, adding that the new entry will include a...

Marvel’s Werewolf by Night Trailer: Man-Thing, Elsa Bloodstone, and More Hidden MCU Details
Among the more exciting bits of news at the 2022 D23 Expo was a trailer for Werewolf by Night. A one-off Halloween special coming to Disney+ on October 7, Werewolf by Night not only brings a cult Marvel character to live-action, but it also serves as the directorial debut of Michael Giacchino, the Academy Award-winning composer who wrote the scores for Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Batman, and more.

Cursed with lycanthropy, Jack Russell made his debut in 1972’s Marvel Spotlight #2, written by Roy Thomas, Jean Thomas, and Gerry Conway, and penciled by Mike Ploog. To capitalize on the renewed interest in horror comics, Russell soon jumped to his own series Werewolf by Night, which took him around the Marvel Universe to battle against all manner of paranormal baddies. Although he’s since received to the background, Russell remains a fan favorite in the comics. And if the trailer for Werewolf by Night is any indication,...

Will Patton and Mark O'Brien in Hammer (2019)
The Mummy (1959) - 24853 Blu-Ray Review by Jennie Kermode
Will Patton and Mark O'Brien in Hammer (2019)
This fabulous new release of the Hammer Horror classic comes with a generous slate of features which includes not one but two separate audio commentaries. The one by Marcus Hearn and Jonathan Rigby is fairly conventional - which is not to say uninteresting - taking viewers through the film step by step as it unfolds and discussing aspects of production and stories from the set. The other, by academic Kelly Robinson, is truly fascinating, focusing as it does on wider aspects of the mummy as a character in European and North American fiction, and probing the ways in which it differs from Hammer's previously established monsters Count Dracula and Baron Frankenstein's creation, by virtue of its lack of a foundational narrative. Drawing together the cinematic and the literary, this is a real treat, the sort of in-depth material which is hard to access outside educational settings, and it adds considerable.

‘Bones And All’: Luca Guadagnino Dismisses Any Relation Between New Movie And The Allegations Against Armie Hammer
Image
Those lucky enough to be at the Venice Film Festival this year have only six days before Luca Guadagnino‘s latest “Bones And All” has its world premiere at the festival. And Guadagnino’s new film is one of the most anticipated on the Lido this year, a favorite for Venice’s top prize, the Golden Lion. But the lead-up to the film has had an unfortunate slant. The film’s subject matter, about two young cannibals who fall in love on the fringes of society, relates to the allegations against disgraced “Call Me By Your Name” star Armie Hammer.

Review: Hammer Films' "Nightmare" (1964); Scream Factory Blu-ray Special Edition

Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none

By Hank Reineke

Following the success of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho in 1960-61, there was – forgive me – a “mad” rush to cash in on that film’s coattails. On one side of the pond, U.S. based pastiches of Psycho would come courtesy of Shlock-horror maestro William Castle. The gimmicky producer would rush out the psychological-thriller Homicidal in 1961 and, a bit later - and more famously - with Joan Crawford in Straiht- Jacket (1964). In England, Hammer Film Productions, riding high due to their reimagining of the classic “Universal” monsters, would likewise bring to the screen four psych-thrillers of similar temperament: Paranoiac and Maniac in 1963, Hysteria and Nightmare in 1965.

One of the connecting threads of this quartet of Hammer efforts were that all scenarios had been dutifully scribed by their “house writer” of sorts, Jimmy Sangster. In his entertaining autobiography Do You Want it Good or Tuesday?...
