Olivia Cooke (Sound of Metal) and BAFTA Award winner Jamie Bell (All of Us Strangers) have signed on to lead Italian filmmaker Nathalie Biancheri’s latest pic Takes One To Know One.

Cornerstone has international rights to the pic and will co-rep the US with CAA Media Finance. The pair will launch sales at Cannes.

Billed as an “unconventional and contemporary take on romance,” the film was penned by writer Brooke Baker. The screenplay was featured on the 2022 Black List. Cameras are set to roll in Italy in late 2024.

The film’s synopsis reads: When Eleanor (Cooke) and Lucas (Bell) meet in Rome, the chemistry is electric. With a shared passion for art, Italy, and each other, it looks like the start of something life-changing. The biggest stumbling block: They are both in relationships with other people.

Seth MacFarlane of “Family Guy” and “Ted” fame is partnering through his Seth MacFarlane Foundation with filmmaker Martin Scorsese to fund The Film Foundation’s (led by Scorsese) first-ever restoration of a curated selection of a dozen historically significant animated shorts from the 1920s through the 1940s. The announcement was made today. Among the lot are nine short animated films from the legendary team of brothers Max and Dave Fleischer, who created Betty Boop and Koko the Clown among many other memorable characters.

The films were selected and restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive and The Film Foundation, in collaboration with Paramount Studio Archives. They were funded by MacFarlane and completed using unique original pre-print elements and/or print sources, mostly nitrate.

Martin Scorsese's non-profit Film Foundation was first founded in 1990 as a means to restore and archive films that stood on the brink of being lost. Scorsese, one of the world's preeminent cineastes, was aghast to learn that only about 10% of the films made before 1929 still survive and that more than half of the films made before 1950 were lost forever. The Film Foundation is run by a consortium of famous filmmakers who raise money for extensive restoration efforts. To date, the Foundation has restored over 1,000 movies. Many of the films can be watched online on the Fest Foundation's website. The Foundation also provides educational materials for teachers who might want to show some of these movies to their students. Scorsese wants to make sure that audiences have a chance to see some of the greatest films of all time.

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane and Goodfellas director Martin Scorsese may not seem like the most likely match, but Deadline reports that the pair have joined forces to fund the restoration of historically significant animated shorts from the 1920s to 1940s.

“I’m so grateful to Seth MacFarlane for his enthusiasm and his support on these restorations,” said Martin Scorsese. “What an astonishing experience, to see these remarkable pictures that I experienced for the first time as a child brought back to their full glory. Imagine the reactions of children today! Because the films now seem as fresh as they did when they were newly made.“

In his own statement, MacFarlane added, “The work Martin Scorsese and his Film Foundation have been doing is essential cinematic preservation. I’m honored to partner with them in restoring their first-ever collection of storied animation.“

British actor Darren Kent, who had a memorable, heartbreaking role in HBO's hit series Game of Thrones, has died.

According to a post on X from his talent agency, Carey Dodd Associates, Kent passed away on Friday. While it was noted that his best friend and parents were by his side, no additional details were shared on the nature of Kent's passing, though he had been battling osteoporosis, arthritis, and a very rare skin disorder all throughout his career. The actor, who was just 36 years old, is getting remembered on social media by some of the people who'd gotten to know him through their work together.

Kent made his lone appearance on HBO’s Game of Thrones in the June 2014 episode “The Children” — the season-four finale — where he shows a stunned Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) the charred remains of his 3-year-old daughter, who was killed by Drogon.

Darren Kent, who played grieving father Goatherd on “Game of Thrones,” has died at age 36, his agent Carey Dodd Associates announced on Tuesday.

Fremantle has acquired a majority stake in Element Pictures, the production company behind the acclaimed series “Normal People,” the upcoming “Conversations With Friends” and the award winning films “The Favourite” and “Room.”

The deal was spearheaded by Fremantle’s Group COO, and Continental Europe CEO, Andrea Scrosati and Lorenzo De Maio, of De Maio Entertainment. For Fremantle, the acquisition furthers their plans to invest in and develop premium production companies and creative talents from around the world. De Maio Entertainment, a Fremantle-backed company, will be a strategic advisor and partner across Element Pictures’ slate.

Conversations with Friends follows Frances (Alison Oliver), a 21-year-old college student, as she navigates a series of relationships that force her to confront her own vulnerabilities for the first time.

Her ex-girlfriend, now best friend, Bobbi (Sasha Lane) is self-assured, outspoken and compelling.

Though they broke up three years ago, Frances and Bobbi are virtually inseparable and perform spoken word poetry together in Dublin.

It’s at one of their shows that they meet Melissa (Jemima Kirke), an older writer, who is fascinated by the pair.

Bobbi and Frances start to spend time with Melissa and her husband, Nick (Joe Alwyn), a handsome but reserved actor.

In the half-hour series, a psychotherapist (Carell) finds himself held prisoner by a serial killer (Gleeson) with an unusual request: curb his homicidal urges. But unwinding the mind of this man while also dealing with the waves of his own repressed troubles creates a journey perhaps as treacherous as his captivity.

Film4 deputy director and industry titan Sue Bruce-Smith has died following a battle with cancer. She was 62.

Bruce-Smith had been receiving treatment for cancer at home in Dublin, Ireland, with the support of her family. She died Saturday morning, Film4 confirmed to Variety.

Bruce-Smith, a well-respected figure in the British film industry, spent 20 years of her career at Film4, having first joined the organization in 1997 following stints at the BFI, where she was head of international sales, and BBC Worldwide, where she served as marketing and distribution manager. She began her career at Palace Pictures in 1985 as print and marketing manager.

In 2001, Bruce-Smith relocated with her family to Dublin, and joined independent producer Little Bird. She returned to Film4 in 2004. Most recently, in 2017, Bruce-Smith was appointed deputy director of Film4 by director Daniel Battsek.

BBC and Hulu have finally given us a peek at the upcoming TV adaptation of Sally Rooney's Normal People, and whew, we were not ready. In the trailer, Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell's (Paul Mescal) turbulent love story - from high school and through their years at university - comes to life, and if we thought the book was an emotional roller coaster, then it looks like the series will have us sobbing even harder.

In the 50-second trailer, a phone call between Marianne and Connell overlays footage of intimate moments shared by the pair. During the conversation, Marianne asks Connell if she can have him back in her life, and while it's only a small glimpse into exactly what's to come in the series, it's clear their relationship is a slow-burning, emotion-packed love story, much like in Rooney's award-winning novel.

HBO is out with its list of everything new coming to HBO in January, and everything leaving.

Highlights include “The New Pope,” out Jan. 13. Starring Jude Law, it’s a continuation of the 2016 series “The Young Pope.”

There’s also “The Outsider,” out Jan. 12. Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, it stars Jason Bateman, Cynthia Erivo and Ben Mendelsohn.

“Avenue 5,” about a luxury space-traveling company, is out Jan. 19, along with season 10 of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

When I saw there was another remake of the classic story The Secret Garden, I rolled my eyes because I, just like you, am tired of the remakes, and we already have a bunch of this particular story. My favorite being the 1987 TV movie version, featuring a very young Colin Firth, that my mom recorded for me on a VHS tape that I watched over and over. It was a really good movie. Then there was also the 1993 version, which was pretty good too. But upon watching this trailer, I was won over. It’s so beautiful, and an exciting new version my kids will like. Fun fact: this new film also features Colin Firth. My husband says he just can’t escape that damn garden!

The Secret Garden Synopsis

The film tells the story of Mary Lennox, a prickly and unloved 10-year-old girl, born in India to wealthy British parents.

There, she begins to uncover many family secrets, particularly after meeting her sickly cousin Colin, who has been shut away in a wing of the house.

Actor Will Poulter says Midsommar’s eerie rural village never felt like a movie set.

A group of American college friends set out on a trek to Sweden in Midsommar, the second horror feature from Hereditary writer/director Ari Aster. Among the group are Dani (Florence Pugh), who’s traumatized by a family tragedy and the downward spiral of her relationship with Christian (Jack Reynor), who’s also on the trip. Joining them are anthropology student Josh (William Jackson Harper) and Christian’s friend Mark (Will Poulter) a loud-mouthed, boorish misogynist whose interests extend mainly to screwing as many Swedish girls as he can.

The New York Times bestseller “Normal People” was only published stateside last month, but the coming-of-age novel is already being adapted into a television series that will premiere on Hulu next year. The 12-episode, half-hour drama, taken from Sally Rooney’s book, will track the complicated relationship of main characters Marianne and Connell from the end of their school days in small-town west of Ireland to their undergraduate years at Trinity College.

Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie McDonald will direct the series, with Abrahamson directing the first six episodes and McDonald directing the latter six. The series will be produced by Ed Guiney’s (“The Favourite”) Element Pictures, and will star Daisy Edgar-Jones as the lonely and intimidating Marianne, and Paul Mescal, in his first television role, as the outgoing and popular Connell.

Marquis Rodriquez, John Simm, Richard McCabe, John Heffernan, and Dixie Egerickx have all been cast in series regular roles, reports variety.com. As with all things "Game of Thrones," the exact nature of the characters each will be playing is being kept under tight wraps.

Rodriguez will next be seen starring in the Netflix miniseries "When They See Us" from director Ava DuVernay, which is based on the true story of the Central Park Five. He also had a role in the Marvel-Netflix shows "Luke Cage" and "Iron Fist".

HBO is rounding out its ensemble cast for its Game Of Thrones prequel pilot. Marquis Rodriguez (When They See Us), John Simm (Strangers), Richard McCabe (Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams), John Heffernan (Dracula) and Dixie Egerickx (The Secret Garden) are set as series regulars in the drama pilot from writer Jane Goldman and author/Got co-executive producer George R.R. Martin.

Created by Goldman and Martin and written by Goldman based on a story by her and Martin, the untitled prequel takes place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones. It chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend — it’s not the story we think we know.

Exclusive: HBO has picked up to series Run, its romantic comedic thriller pilot starring Domhnall Gleeson and Merritt Wever, from Fleabag and Killing Eve creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge and her frequent collaborator Vicky Jones. This evening the 2019 Critics Circle Award were held at the May Fair Hotel in London. Each year the ceremony brings together the finest in modern film and 2019 continues to focus a wider spotlight than the glitzier events.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ cruelty-saoked period drama The Favourite is rightly, well – the favourite for many of the awards. Paweł Pawlikowski’s Cold War joins Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here, Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma and Rupert Everett’s The Happy Prince with five nominations apiece.

Charlotte Rampling (45 Years) will receive an Honorary Golden Bear at the 2019 Berlin International Film Festival. The festival will also present a homage to the feted British actress’s career: movies will include The Damned, The Night Porter, The Verdict, Swimming Pool and Stardust Memories. Rampling presided over the festival’s jury in in 2006 and in 2015 she won the Silver Bear for Best Actress for 45 Years, for which she was also Oscar-nominated. “I’m very happy that this year’s Homage is dedicated to the sublime actress Charlotte Rampling,” said Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick. “She is an icon of unconventional and exciting cinema.” The prolific Rampling, whose career spans six decades, has recently played in Red Sparrow, The Little Stranger and Michel Blanc’s Kiss & Tell. Crazy Rich Asians outfit Ivanhoe Pictures has joined the producing team behind Priyanka Chopra (Quantico) family drama The Sky Is Pink. The Hindi-language film is written and directed by Shonali Bose and is based on the true life story of the young motivational speaker Aisha Chaudhary and her parents. Alongside Chopra, the film stars actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar and Zaira Wasim in lead roles. Zaira plays the role of Aisha, Priyanka and Farhan play her parents in the movie. Ivanhoe is joining Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP and Siddharth Roy Kapur’s Roy Kapur Films as co-producer and co-financier. The film is currently in production for a mid-2019 release.

Zak Brilliant’s Republic Film Distribution to release title in Feb 2019.

Republic Film Distribution has picked up UK rights to James Gardner’s festival hit Jellyfish from Bankside Films.

The film will have a platform release in UK cinemas from February 8.

Republic is the UK label run by Zak Brilliant, former head of distribution at the now-defunct Icon Film Distribution. Republic also recently handled the UK release of Tom Edmunds’ Dead In A Week: Or Your Money Back.

Bankside has also sealed a UK home entertainment deal for the film with Signature Films. Vertical Entertainment previously bought Us rights.
