Just one week after pop-punk artist Machine Gun Kelly debuted at number-one on the Billboard 200 with his new album “Mainstream Sellout,” another rock act has dominion on the chart. Red Hot Chili Peppers start on top with “Unlimited Love,” the 12th studio album for the veteran rockers and their first to reach number-one since “Stadium Arcadium” in 2006. In-between, their 2011 album “I’m With You” peaked at number-three, and then 2016’s “The Getaway” couldn’t reach higher than number-two. Read more about this week’s Billboard 200 here at Billboard.com.

Red Hot Chili Peppers have announced their 12th studio album, Unlimited Love. The follow-up to 2016’s The Getaway marks the band’s first new album with guitarist John Frusciante since 2006’s Stadium Arcadium. It’s also their first with longtime producer Rick Rubin since 2011. Unlimited Love arrives April 1.

Exclusive: John Lithgow is returning to his old Dexter stomping ground.
The multiple Emmy-winning actor is set to make a short but decisive appearance in the Michael C. Hall-led revival coming from Showtime this fall. Awarded his fifth Emmy for the role as the revered but feared “Trinity Killer” in the fourth season of the killer series’ original run, Lithgow’s character was soundly bumped off by Dexter Morgan himself in season-finale episode “The Getaway” back in late 2009.
Which begs the question: How will Lithgow’s Arthur Mitchell will return?
Details are scant, but scribes on the Clyde Phillips-showrun 10-episode limited series have concocted a pathway for the Trinity Killer to come back that works within the larger Dexter narrative, I’m told. To that end, Lithgow is expected to only film for about a day or so on the L.A.-set production. It is likely that...

Robert Altman's Images (1972) is showing on Mubi starting November 15, 2020 in the United Kingdom, Ireland, United States, and Canada.Robert Altman’s dizzying psychological horror film Images (1972) is one of those slippery films that has inspired a wide variety of poster art ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous. I only recently came upon the stunning British double crown poster above, thanks to New York poster house Posteritati (more on that in a minute), but I’d long been aware of a number of very different pieces for the film. Seemingly tossed off in between Altman’s two indisputable masterpieces McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971) and The Long Goodbye (1973), Images is unusual in the Altman canon for being a horror film of sorts (though it has been said to form a loose trilogy of female psychosis with That Cold Day in the Park [1969] and Three Women [1977]), and also for its non-American...

The orange waterfall on the cover says it all: My Morning Jacket bliss out on 10 psychedelic, southern-tinged, soft-rock mood-pieces about traveling, getting wasted, and falling in love. The songs are leftovers from the sessions that yielded 2015’s The Waterfall, but they feel less like a tributary and more like their own river. When Covid-19 forced the world into lockdown, frontman Jim James played his iTunes on random and stumbled on “Spinning My Wheels,” a gorgeous ballad about feeling stuck that he and his bandmates had orchestrated with a Rhodes piano...

Seven Diverse Scribes Selected For WGA East & FilmNation’s Inaugural New York Screenwriters Workshop
Seven women and minority writers have been selected to take part in the inaugural New York Screenwriters Workshop – a six-month intensive program that focuses on professional development for diverse, emerging screenwriters in the greater New York City area.
The workshop is a partnership between the WGA East and FilmNation Entertainment, a New York City-based producer, financier and distributor of independent films and television.
“Even during this pandemic, screenplays are still being written and projects are being developed,” said WGA East executive director Lowell Peterson. “The guild is thrilled to partner with FilmNation on a project that will open doors to under-represented screenwriters. The strides we make in creating opportunities for people to build careers despite historic exclusion helps build an industry that is both fair and sustainable. This program is an important part of the Wgae’s efforts to make the film and television industry more inclusive and equitable.”

There are a lot of popular streaming platforms to choose from, but Hulu has always stood alongside Netflix as one of the two essentials for households looking for diversity in content. In the past, they’ve been known for focusing more heavily on newer television content, while Netflix has always offered a larger selection of sought-after films. But now, it looks like Hulu’s June lineup is only going to continue the service’s recent trend of providing high quality movies to bring itself in line with their competitor.

Before Martin Scorsese became one of the greatest directors of all time there was “The Big Shave.” Before Taika Waititi directed a Marvel movie and won an Oscar for “Jojo Rabbit” there was “Two Cars, One Night.” Before Andrea Arnold and Lynne Ramsay become two of our best working directors there was “Wasp” and “Small Deaths.” Most great directors start their careers with a great short film, several of which IndieWire has rounded up below for your streaming pleasure.

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in March 2020.
March 2020 is an extremely HBO month for HBO.
What we mean by that is that the list of new releases for the month contain a lot of the hallmarks of the HBO brand that the network has built over the years. There is the third season of an expensive and popular sci-fi series with Westworld season 3 premiering on March 15. Then there's also the requisite new David Simon series when Philip Roth adaptation The Plot Against America premieres on March 16.
If that weren't enough, March 2020 sees the arrival of a big ticket superhero movie with X-Men: Dark Phoenix arriving on March 21. It's not a good big ticket superhero movie, but still! You may want to rewatch it all the same. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is a sort of superhero movie itself.

Zac Brown Band appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform two songs, “Spend It All on You” and “Leaving Love Behind,” on the late night show’s outdoor stage. The latter is the closing track of the group’s new album The Owl, which dropped in September.
“Spend It All on You” comes off Brown’s recent surprise solo album The Controversy, which features collaborations with producers like Max Martin, Benny Blanco and Skrillex. The upbeat song gets a heavier country vibe during the performance with the help of Brown’s bandmates,...

Laverne Cox is known for breaking barriers in Hollywood but even she was surprised to be breaking into the music charts with her single “Welcome Home.”
“Oh, my God! It’s number six on the charts!” Cox exclaimed to Variety at the special screening of “Can You Keep A Secret?” on Wednesday night at the Arclight Hollywood.
Cox elaborated on the backstory behind the track, which she created in collaboration with Smirnoff to promote Pride Month in June. “The fun thing is that basically Smirnoff took the dialogue from the commercial that I did with them for World Pride and set it to a dance beat and released it and the DJs are now playing it at the club,” Cox said. “So it’s no. 6 on the Billboard Dance Club charts this week and all the proceeds from the song go to the Transgender Law Center.”

Laverne Cox's “Welcome Home,” an original song created in partnership with Smirnoff, has cracked the Billboard Top 10 Dance Club chart.
Laverne and Smirnoff teamed up to create the song as a way to welcome the millions of Lgbtqia+ community members and allies that made their way to NYC for Pride month celebrations this year. In support of love in all its forms, Smirnoff is donating the net proceeds generated from streaming or downloading the song through June 2020 to the Transgender Law Center, the largest transgender-led civil rights organization in the United States, with Smirnoff guaranteeing a minimum donation of $10,000.
Following the news, Laverne posted to her Instagram showing off her moves and encouraging people to continue streaming the song.

Zac Brown Band will unveil their new album The Owl on September 20th. The eclectic country-rock band announced the record with the release of the piano ballad “Leaving Love Behind” on Friday.
A subdued heartbreak song in the vein of Zbb’s 2010 hit “Colder Weather,” “Leaving Love Behind” pushes Brown’s voice front and center in the mix, making it sound as if he’s singing just inches from your ear. There’s nothing to interfere with his plaintive vocals either — the ballad travels forward on the strength of that maudlin piano,...

Spike Jonze, director of “Being John Malkovich” and “Her,” will serve as Imax Entertainment’s first “artist in residence,” Variety has learned.
The company said Jonze, an Oscar-winner who has been involved with everything from music videos for Sonic Youth to the Jackass movies, will collaborate with Imax’s leadership to find new partnerships and creative opportunities.
“When Spike and I sat down to talk about this, the ideas just flowed organically,” said Megan Colligan, president of Imax Entertainment. “He has a real sense of what’s happening in the culture and he’s been operating on the cutting edge of a lot of different spaces.”
Colligan said she hopes that Jonze is the first of many such artists in residence. The role has been created to helped the company find new and innovative ways to use its network of screens, particularly at times when there are a dearth of summer or holiday blockbusters.

Twenty-five years ago, Rivers Cuomo was attending community college when his band Weezer released their self-titled debut. “I brought it to class and said, ‘Look everybody,’” he recalled in 1995. “They were all like, ‘Yeah, cool, whatever.’”

The long-overdue return of Love and Theft, a twangy slice of Possum country from Whiskey Wolves of the West and Sheryl Crow’s stunning duet with Johnny Cash make up the tracks you must hear this week.

A projectionist and film journalist – and later film tutor – Makoto Shinozaki’s 1995 directorial debut “Okaeri” (“Welcome Home”) on first glance certainly appears the work of a novice. However, by the end of the film, there are certainly signs of accomplished filmmaking.
“Okaeri” was screened at Doc Films Chicago:
Young married couple the Kitazawas, Takashi (Susumu Terajima) and Yuriko (Miho Uemura), are bang average. Takashi works as a teacher, sometimes working late, sometimes talked into late night drinks, welcomed home by freelance transcriber Yuriko in their modest urban apartment. He is easily led, appearing to put work before his wife, while she quietly waits at home for his return; a fine meal prepared.
But the more time passes, the more Yuriko’s stares out the window into the void start to take their toll. Takashi fails to notice her blank stares until it is too late. Beginning to wander the streets aimlessly,...

The Art Directors Guild Production Design Awards spread the wealth throughout 11 categories of film, television, commercials, music videos, and animated features. Feature film winners included period “The Favourite” (Fiona Crombie), fantasy “Black Panther” (Hannah Beachler), contemporary “Crazy Rich Asians” (Nelson Coates), and animated “Isle of Dogs”.
Anyone looking for clarity on the upcoming Academy Awards won’t get it here. Beachler, the Oscar favorite, for her brilliant world building of Wakanda, has already become the first African-American to be Oscar-nominated in her craft. A victory, though, would solidify the diversity breakthrough for production design.
Meanwhile, a win for Crombie would signify a stunning creative achievement. She transformed the palace (shot at Hatfield House) into a playground and battlefield with a lot of open spaces. The wood paneling and tapestries helped the pale-skinned actresses stand out more, especially with Sandy Powell’s Oscar-nominated monochrome costumes.

“The Favourite,” “Black Panther” and “Crazy Rich Asians” walked away with top film honors at the 23rd annual Art Directors Guild Awards Saturday night.
“This journey started six years ago with ‘Fruitvale Station’ and a very awkward Skype interview,” Hannach Beachler, production designer of “Black Panther,” said in thanking director Ryan Coogler. “This journey has altered my life … Just learning about who I am and what I want this film to be, and really pushing the idea that design is not just brick and mortar. It’s not just wax, it’s not just paint. It’s your heart, it’s your soul, it’s everything we do every single day.”
In the TV fields, “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Glow” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” were among the winners.
Oscar-nominated production designer Jeannine Oppewall and Adg-nominated production designer Ed Verreaux (“Jurassic Park”) received lifetime achievement awards from the organization.

The 71st Annual Directors Guild of America Awards will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, with awards to be given out in 11 categories across film and television.
Alfonso Cuaron is the runaway favorite to take home his second feature film DGA Award for “Roma,” which would set him up for the corresponding Oscar since the two bodies have only ever disagreed seven times in 70 years. He previously won both for “Gravity” (2013). Spike Lee (“BlacKkKlansman”) is in second place in our odds and would be the first black winner in DGA history.
Last year, Cuaron’s friend Guillermo del Toro took home the DGA and Oscar for “The Shape of Water.”
See DGA Awards: Alfonso Cuaron all but certain to win key Oscar precursor
On the TV side, “The Americans” is predicted to bag another farewell prize, while it’s a tight one between “Atlanta” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for comedy honors.

Comedy series creators dominate this year’s roster of Directors Guild of America TV awards nominees. Donald Glover is contending for an episode in the sophomore season of “Atlanta,” which also reaped a bid for Hiro Murai. Both Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel Palladino vie for installments in the second edition of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” And Bill Hader is nominated for the pilot of “Barry.”
Among the TV drama helmers is Adam McKay for an episode of “Succession.” He could well be a nominee for his film “Vice” as well. He contends here against “Ozark” star Jason Bateman, long-time “Homeland” helmer Lesli Linka Glatter, Chris Long for “The Americans” series finale and Daina Reid for a second season episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

Emily Ratajkowski’s Halloween costume was no simple fur-lined bikini: She says her homage to Raquel Welch’s outfit in the 1966 film “One Million Years B.C.” was custom-made by a costumer at “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and involved hours of hair and makeup.
“I’m obsessed with reference images, and that image, that poster of her in what they called ‘mankind’s first bikini’ — I love that. It’s just fun and kind of quirky,” Ratajkowski said.
“The costumer at Kimmel custom-made the outfit… It was very legit. And then, my hair and makeup team is very committed to the glamorous life. So they really got into it. I sat in a chair for two-and-a-half hours which I don’t normally do,” Ratajkowski said.
The costume talk starts around the 18-minute mark of our “Shoot This Now” podcast, which you can listen to on Apple or right here:

Aaron Paul and Emily Ratajkowski are so well-matched in the new drama “Welcome Home” that we wanted to see them reunite onscreen again. So we pitched them a few ideas.
Paul and Ratajkowski said one of our ideas was “sexy” — but that the other sounded like something you’d watch while falling asleep on a long flight. They explain more in the new “Shoot This Now” podcast, which you can listen to on Apple or directly above or right here.
“Welcome Home,” as Paul told us, follows “a couple struggling to keep things together, and then they’re put in a really scary situation in a setting where they’re not really comfortable.”

We have to be in a nightmare rather than a dream, because Aaron Paul has doled out the first details about his “Westworld” character — but none of them really add up to anything. At least we don’t think they do. Here, judge for yourself.

"We came here to fix this, right? We're not going to leave until we do." Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for a film titled Welcome Home, a dangerous romantic thriller of sorts from filmmaker George Ratliff. The film stars Aaron Paul and Emily Ratajkowski as a couple who decide to take a trip to the Italian countryside to work on their relationship. They book a home using a website called "Welcome Home". Once they arrive, an encounter with a neighbor begins to disrupt their relationship even more. The cast also includes Riccardo Scamarcio as Federico, plus Katy Louise Saunders, Alice Bellagamba, and Francesco Acquaroli. This looks like it has some seriously creepy twists and turns. It may start as a struggling romance, but turns into something very freaky and unsettling. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for George Ratliff's Welcome Home, direct from YouTube: Desperate to reignite...

Hannahlei Cabanilla has been a favorite of the judges on “So You Think You Can Dance” throughout the season 15 live shows. But she hasn’t yet risen to the top of our predictions for who will win at the end of the season. Going into Monday night’s show when the Top 6 performed she ranked third in our racetrack odds. That could change after another pair of standout performances, including a contemporary routine where she more than held her own with “Sytycd” all-star Marko Germar. Watch it above.
Germar wasn’t the only all-star involved in the routine. It was also the choreographic debut of fan-favorite Robert Roldan. Set to the song “Welcome Home” by Joy Williams, it was full of loss and longing, and though it was full of difficult lifts and transitions, the dancing duo made them look virtually effortless. During rehearsals Germar expressed gratitude that he was...

Spike Jonze broke the internet earlier this month with the release of his Apple short film, “Welcome Home.” Starring Fka Twigs, the project acted as a commercial for Apple’s new HomePod speaker system and earned instant praise for its choreography and set design. The short features Fka Twigs dancing with her double as the music from Apple’s HomePod turns her apartment into a sliding dance hall.
AdWeek has premiered an exclusive short documentary about the making of “Welcome Home,” and it’s almost as mind-blowing as the short film itself. Jonze is seen working on the choreography with Fka Twigs and making sure her movements match the Anderson .Paak song to which the short is set. The footage confirms Jonze was his own camera operator and if you look closely you’ll spot “Dunkirk” cinematographer Hoyte von Hoytema on set advising Jonze.
