Sleeping Lions | Jonathan Pryce, Nick Mohammed sign up for British comedy mystery
Jonathan Pryce
From director Mat Whitcross comes Sleeping Lions, a new UK film set to star Jonathan Pryce and Nick Mohammed. More here.

Hiding away on Disney+, and well worth digging into the menu system to find it, is the film See How They Run. Starring the brilliant Saoirse Ronan in a rare comedy role, it’s a particularly good British murder mystery comedy – a combination we rarely see these days.

Hang on, though! Here might be another. Sleeping Lions is a new film based on a 1951 novel by Cyril Hare: An English Murder. The adaptation will update the book’s events to the present day, we’re told.

James Roblin is currently penning the adapted screenplay Directing the movie will be Mat Whitecross. The plan is for shooting to take place in the UK later this year. What’s more, distribution is sorted, too: Sky has dug into its coffers and will be distributing the film.

‘Y2K’ Review
Image
Stars: Jaeden Martell, Tim Heidecker, Alicia Silverstone, Julian Dennison, Rachel Zegler, Fred Durst, Kyle Mooney | Written by Evan Winter | Directed by Kyle Mooney

At the end of 1999 humanity faced the first major crisis of the computer era, the Y2K Bug. For those lucky enough to be too young to remember, it was feared the fact most programs hard coded the “19” and only stored the last two digits of a year in memory would cause them to think the year 2000 was actually 1900 and plunge the world into chaos.

While there were some problems, it ended up being considerably less than the end of the world as we know it. The biggest problem I had to deal with was my copy of WWE 2K20 crashing until I could download and installed a patch. The characters in Saturday Night Live regular turned first-time director Kyle Mooney and co-writer Evan Winter’s alternate history...

Rebecca Ferguson's New Villain Role Is Perfect 5 Years After Underseen 90% Fantasy Movie
Image
Although Rebecca Ferguson played a great villain role five years ago in a woefully underrated fantasy film, the Dune actor now has the chance to give a higher profile villain performance in The Magic Faraway Tree. Recently, it was announced that an adaptation of a classic children's novel will star Ferguson as well as other acclaimed actors, including Claire Foy (The Crown), Andrew Garfield, and Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton). The book of the same name is the second in a series of four novels by Enid Blyton that center on an enchanted wood where the titular tree grows.

The giant, magical tree grows so tall that its branches reach the clouds, while its trunk is so wide that there are houses carved into its trunk. In the books, Polly (Foy) and Tim Thompson (Garfield) relocate to the remote countryside near the woods with their three children. Set to be directed by...

New British TV Series from 2023: BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky, Netflix, Prime Video, BritBox
Image
In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.

Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.

Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

The Biggest Henry Cavill House Of The Dragon Fancasting Is Officially Dead (But His Best Got Role Can Still Happen)
Image
Henry Cavill won't be playing Lord Cregan Stark in House of the Dragon season 2, with Tom Taylor cast in the role. Taylor makes more sense than Cavill for Cregan Stark, due to both his younger age and being a lesser-known actor. Cavill could still play Aegon the Conqueror in an upcoming prequel. His experience as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher showcases many of the skills that would make him great for the role.

Henry Cavill's most frequent House of the Dragon fancasting definitely won't happen, but that could allow the actor to take on a role in a different Game of Thrones prequel. As a major British actor who is no stranger to the fantasy genre, it's no surprise Cavill has been linked to several roles in the Game of Thrones franchise. That certainly picked up after House of the Dragon season 1's ending, with the promise of new characters,...

Fantasy Movies & TV Need 1 Crucial Element To Be Successful (That Marvel's Always Had)
Image
Modern fantasy projects need more swagger to be successful, as many entries in the genre are seen as lame. Some fantasy films that have embraced a cooler image, such as "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," have found critical success. Marvel's "Iron Man" showed that a cool and relatable character can change the perception of an entire genre, and fantasy needs its own version of this.

Fantasy movies and TV shows have struggled to make their big break in recent years, and they need one crucial element in order to be successful - and Marvel has always had it. The fantasy genre has had some periods in the spotlight, with series like The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter making waves in the early 2000s. However, fantasy has seriously struggled to get a foothold in popular culture in the past few years, and the many failed fantasy films need...

Digital video piracy accounts for more than $50 billion in revenue losses for the global tv and movie industry, according to the study.

12 Great Fantasy Movies That Bombed At The Box Office
Image
While some fantasy movies strike gold at the box office, a lot of stunning entries into the genre end up flopping despite their immersive worlds and effective mythology. Fantasy is a tough genre for filmmakers to succeed in. While horror movies can be made relatively cheap, fantasy tends to require a lot of elaborate world-building. For authors, this might mean a few lines describing a lush kingdom or a desolate wasteland but, for directors, it can mean a lot of money. Fantasy movies are often a big-budget endeavor, which makes them a high-risk investment.

However, like many genres, fantasy yields inconsistent results. Some of the biggest box-office bombs of all time are fantasy movies, but some of the most successful franchises in cinema history belong to the same genre. While the Lord of the Rings movies might make a prospective filmmaker eager to delve into fantasy movies, a movie like...

Netflix Cancels Supernatural Show “Lockwood & Co.” After Just One Season
Image
From writer/director Joe Cornish (Attack the Block, The Kid Who Would Be King, Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn), “Lockwood & Co.” premiered on Netflix back in January, and we’ve learned that the series has already been given the axe.

Netflix has cancelled “Lockwood & Co.” after one season, the latest in a long line of streaming shows that have been cancelled by Netflix before they had a chance to build an audience.

Variety reports this afternoon, “Variety understands that while Netflix was very pleased with the show, and especially the work that had gone into it, viewing numbers didn’t meet the threshold to greenlight a second season. But Complete Fiction, which was founded by Cornish together with Edgar Wright, Nira Park and Rachael Prior, will continue to work with Netflix. The companies already have a number of projects in development.”

Complete Fiction said in a statement of their own,...

Netflix’s Lockwood & Co. Review: a Fun British Teen Ghost Romp
Image
Lockwood & Co. coming to Netflix just six weeks after the streaming service cancelled its last solid adaptation of a British fantasy YA book series in The Bastard Son & The Devil Itself, feels a bit like getting a new puppy after your last one was run over. You’re happy it’s here, obviously, but there’s a tug of wariness about getting too attached.

It’s very easy to get attached to this eight-episode ghost story about three teens running a supernatural detective agency. The cast is charming, the characters are likeable and their world – in which a nightly curfew and platoons of rapier-bearing teens protects London from spectral attack – is solidly conceived.

There are ongoing mysteries plus episodic encounters and an evolving Scooby Gang dynamic between its young leads. It has a touch of Harry Potter plus a touch of Being Human, and families who enjoyed Wednesday together could...

Director Joe Cornish Wants Attack The Block 2 To Aim For The Highs Of Terminator 2 And Aliens
Image
Allow it. The low-budget indie darling "Attack the Block," which is about an alien invasion in London, singlehandedly kickstarted John Boyega's career in 2011 and turned into a cult hit thanks to those who sang its praises early on, finally crossing into the mainstream enough to justify a long-awaited sequel (while also leading us oblivious folk in the U.S. to completely misunderstand what the slang phrase "Allow it" even means in the first place). Written and directed by Joe Cornish ("The Kid Who Would Be King"), the thrilling and incisive action/comedy has taken a long, winding, but thoroughly rewarding path to reaching the current level of acclaim it now rightfully enjoys.

And those involved with the sequel are aiming their sights even higher.

"Attack the Block 2" (assuming it even goes by that title) won't have the element of surprise on its side this time around, but Cornish...

Director Joe Cornish Didn't Want To Rely On Jumpscares For Lockwood & Co.
Image
The jumpscare is a fundamental building block of the horror genre — they frighten the wits out of us right when our guard is down. An effective jumpscare can be pretty thrilling or jarring depending on the intensity of it, but as most horror fans will tell you, they're hard not to be fond of.

While certain filmmakers heavily rely on jump scares in film and television, there's much to be said about storytellers who prefer to build an atmosphere of fear. It could be a dimly lit home where the protagonist is seen walking down a large, empty hallway. It could be a glimpse of a terrorizing shadow in the dark. Perhaps they're both taking place against the backdrop of eerie music — or pin-drop, anxiety-inducing silence. Both evoke a consistent feeling of fear, but how do you replicate that consistency in a show where its characters fight with ghosts?

In "Lockwood & Co,...

Lockwood & Co. Showrunner Joe Cornish Brings Killer Ghosts To Netflix [Exclusive Interview]
Image
Joe Cornish is back with another story about kids fighting for our future. The director of "Attack the Block" and "The Kid Who Would Be King" is the showrunner behind Netflix's "Lockwood & Co." The adaptation of Jonathan Stroud's book series pits young folks against deadly ghosts. In season 1, Anthony Lockwood (Cameron Chapman), George Karim (Ali Hadji-Heshmati), and Lucy Carlyle (Ruby Stokes) join forces as a scrappy team of paranormal investigators in a world haunted by the dead.

The show is another project from Cornish that pays tribute to '80s movies. It's not nostalgia; the past is a key part of the story, not just an aesthetic or an excuse to have a rocking soundtrack. This world is a bit stuck in the '80s, thanks to the array of deadly ghosts. Cornish, who directed the first and last episodes of the season, recently took us behind...

Lockwood & Co. Trailer: Attack The Block Director Joe Cornish Is Trading Aliens For Ghosts In New Netflix Series
Image
In "Attack The Block," Joe Cornish pit a teenage street gang against alien invaders. In "The Kid Who Would Be King," a middle school boy faced off against the powerful sorceress Morgana. So continuing the trend of British youngsters being just a little out of their depths in the fight against a powerful, mythical force, the writer-director is back with an adaptation of Jonathan Stroud's supernatural YA series, "Lockwood & Co." Which means, you guessed it, a team of teenagers are banding together to take down ghosts.

This ghost-busting adventure is set in a world where spirits are no big surprise — instead they're a constant, much too common terror. London, like the rest of their world, is overrun with ghosts and it comes down to major corporations to employ the agents capable of keeping them at bay. But those corporate shills aren't the only ones keeping people safe — there are also small agencies,...

Young Ghost-Hunters Fight Spirits in 'Lockwood & Co.' Series Trailer
Image
"All it takes is a few big cases" Netflix has revealed the full-length official trailer for Lockwood & Co., a new supernatural series made by the acclaimed UK filmmaker Joe Cornish (director of Attack the Block and The Kid Who Would Be King). This is based on a book series that involves a ghost-hunters group called Lockwood & Co. - a small agency in London that runs independent of any adult supervision. A tiny startup, run by two teenage boys and a newly arrived, supremely psychically gifted girl, a renegade trio destined to unravel a mystery that will change the course of history. Starring Ruby Stokes as Lucy Carlyle, Cameron Chapman as Anthony Lockwood, Ali Hadji-Heshmati as George Karim, plus Ivanno Jeremiah, Jack Bandeira, Morven Christie, Rhianna Dorris, and Paddy Holland. Yeah this concept still looks like Ghostbusters + Harry Potter, but with Joe Cornish behind the lens it actually looks awesome anyway!

The Best Movies Studios Dumped in January
Image
This article contains mild spoilers

Ah, January. A fresh year, a chance to start again, with resolutions restored and hope renewed everywhere! Well, almost everywhere. If you go to the theater, you’ll likely find holdovers and awards favorites released in the final months of the previous year; the respectable stuff that does well around Oscar season. But the new offerings tend to be pretty dire. That’s when studios release dreck like the re-Heated Pacino/De Niro team-up Righteous Kill or dorm room staple The Boondock Saints. As the fine folks at Red Letter Media so eloquently point out, January is the worst time of the year for new movies.

But to the surprise of no one, studios aren’t always right about the quality of their movies, and sometimes a real classic ends up getting a January release. In fact, when you look over the past four decades,...

"Your father, that helmet, you, they're all connected." Vertical has unveiled a trailer for a peculiar fantasy action thriller titled Alpha Rift, which seems to be another homage to Dungeons & Dragons from a fan who loves to play tabletop games. When a helmet thrusts Nolan into a world of modern-day knights fighting supernatural evil, he's forced to become the hero he was destined to be. When he puts on the mysterious old armored helmet, his whole world changes. The helmet comes to life and calls out to an evil demon who was imprisoned by Nolan's father. Nolan discovers he's next in the bloodline, heir to The Nobleman, destined to become a hero whether he wants to be or not. Aaron Dalla Villa stars as Nolan, with Lance Henriksen, Richel Nielsen, Philip N. Williams, Graham Wolfe, Allyson Malandra, and Peter Patrikios. This kind of plays like a mashup of Highlander...

Cursed Gets Canceled by Netflix, the Fantasy Series Won't Return for Season 2
Image
Netflix has opted to cancel Cursed after just one season. The fantasy series, which was headlined by Katherine Langford was released last summer and promised a new take on the age-old Arthurian legend. But the new take didn't generate enough buzz to garner a large enough audience that would justify a continuation. As a result, the streaming service has quietly axed the show.

According to multiple reports, Cursed season 2 is not in the cards. While Netflix has been known to save certain shows from cancelation, their shows don't move elsewhere. So this is firmly a one-and-done situation. The cast has been released from any contractual obligations and are now free to pursue other opportunities. No specific reason for the cancellation was provided. Though it likely came down to the audience it brought in relative to what it cost to produce.

Netflix is often not forthcoming in terms of the audience...

Argyris Papadimitropoulos
‘Monday’ Film Review: Sebastian Stan Finds Sun, Sex, and Sadness in Downbeat Love Story
Argyris Papadimitropoulos
Don’t get too taken in by a first impression — that’s a lesson learned by the characters in “Monday,” but it’s valuable advice for the audience as well. What starts out as a sexy, sun-soaked romp becomes a heartbreaking examination of two people who are absolutely wrong for each other.

Not just any filmmaker can craft sex scenes that are both exhilarating in the moment and, in the aggregate, essential to building plot and character, but director Argyris Papadimitropoulos manages that delicate balance. The Greek locations (shot by Hristos Karamanis) are gorgeous, but what starts like a travelogue winds up more of a tragedy.

We first meet Chloe at a party, drunk and leaving screaming voicemails for the boyfriend who has stood her up. Host Argyris (Giorgos Pyrpasopoulos) introduces her to his friend Mickey (Sebastian Stan), the DJ, since they’re both American. Both attracted to him and emotionally fragile,...

Netflix Adds 7 Shows to UK Production Slate With Sam Mendes and Andy Serkis Among Attached Talent
Andy Serkis
Netflix announced Sunday that it is starting development on seven new shows that will be filmed in the U.K., with Andy Serkis, Rowan Atkinson and “1917” director Sam Mendes among the attached talent.

The shows will be developed by the streamer’s vice president of U.K. Original Series, Anne Mensah and will be produced alongside upcoming seasons of shows like “The Crown” and “Sex Education.”

“Setting up a team entirely based in the U.K. was always about being able to better connect to the fantastic program makers we have here — to provide a space for writers, producers, directors and actors that feels local, friendly and familiar but also provides talent the opportunity to make shows that will impact on a global scale. U.K.-made stories really do speak to the world,” Mensah said in a statement.
