Glenn Close’s career brought her an eighth Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category for her role as Mamaw, the chain-smoking, foul-mouthed, “Terminator” franchise fan and tough-love proponent who takes her struggling grandson under her wing in Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy.”
Some critics thought Close was the saving grace of the film based on J.D. Vance’s memoir that focuses on an Appalachian family who have fallen on hard times when their once-thriving steel mill town in Ohio is riddled by poverty, addiction, domestic abuse and dead-end jobs.
Close holds the title of the most Oscar losses for an actress, in a tie with the late Peter O’Toole’s losing streak. Olivia Colman's performance as ditzy Queen Anne in “The Favourite” allowed her to be crowned with the Best Actress title over Close’s work in 2018’s “The Wife.”

Despite the setback of this year’s wildfires, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will be “out-of-control good” and credit for their success will be taken by Donald Trump, according to Endeavor and Tko exec Mark Shapiro.
The “L.A. and Back” narrative will drive strong interest in corporate hospitality packages offered by Tko’s On Location subsidiary, Shapiro predicted during an appearance at a Morgan Stanley media conference. Ben Swinburne, the Morgan Stanley analyst moderating Monday’s session with Shapiro, asked the exec if he felt “bullish” about L.A. in 2028 and anticipated that they will “go on as planned” despite the fires.
“They’ve had time to rebuild, and it’s going to be a coming-out party,” Shapiro said. “Sort of at the other end of the spectrum from where the Oscars were last night when they celebrated L.A. and the pageantry and the history and, of course, encouraged...

After a very intense and controversial Oscars season, Netflix scooped up three awards at the 2025 97th Academy Awards. That brings Netflix’s total Oscar count up to 26 statues. Here’s a full breakdown of Netflix’s past efforts at the Academy Awards and the full list of 73 nominated titles.
Netflix takes the Oscars seriously. They continue to have a massive team working on awards campaigning. Insider reported in 2022 that Netflix had a 40-person awards operation along with 15 consultants who spread their time working on campaigns for Emmys and, of course, the Oscars. Despite that massive spending and resource allocation, it’s still yet to win some of the biggest prizes of the night when some of its close rivals have. Apple TV+ notably scored Best Picture at the 2022 Oscars, and Prime Video has scooped some top awards, too.

As of today, a staggering 611 films have been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. That’s a lot of movies. And after nearly one whole century of Oscar ceremonies, only 1.3% of those Best Picture nominees were in the horror genre — including this year’s “The Substance.”
That’s a low number by any estimation, and it says a lot more about the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences than it does about the horror genre. Although horror movies have long struggled to gain recognition of their artistic achievements, there has never been any shortage of ingenious movies that explore our deepest fears and anxieties.
And if you’re thinking to yourself “Hasn’t there been a lot of dreck too?” then hey, guess what? You’re correct. And you could also say that about dramas and comedies and documentaries while you’re at it. Most of the movies...

“The Night Agent” has returned with many new faces. Now that Peter Sutherland is officially a night agent, he must take on a new conspiracy mission with a new team.
Gabriel Basso will pick up the action, starring as Peter, and Luciane Buchanan will return as Rose. Though the couple ended their relationship at the end of Season 1, when Rose hears Peter is in trouble, she jumps at the opportunity to rekindle their relationship.
Because this season follows Peter on a new mission, several members of the original cast will not be back for Season 2, though, including Hong Chau and Robert Patrick.

Your favorite show ever about Night Action kicks off its second season on Thursday, January 23, when The Night Agent begins again. Will the second season be as good as the first? That might be asking too much. Plus, the second season probably won't get as many views because one would have to watch season one to get to season two, presumably.
When we left off Gabriel Basso's Peter Sutherland, he was boarding a flight after getting his first assignment as a full-fledged agent. He had kissed his girlfriend, Rose Larkin, goodbye, and though she asked him to call when he arrived at his destination, he could make no promises. But we know bad things happen to Peter once he arrives in Thailand.

Gabriel Basso is looking back at playing now-Vice President Jd Vance.
If you didn’t know, the 30-year-old The Night Agent actor played a younger version of the 40-year-old politician in the 2020 movie adaption of Vance‘s memoir Hillbilly Elegy. The movie, directed by Ron Howard, also starred Glenn Close and Amy Adams.

The morning after she hosted the Golden Globes, comedian Nikki Glaser dropped by Howard Stern’s radio show to discuss her monologue and all the jokes she couldn’t tell — jokes that were left on the cutting room floor because of time, the sensitive nature of the Beverly Hilton crowd or a mainstreamed notion of decency.
She was hardly the first person to do this, a post-mortem ritual that allows edgier emcees to blur the line between public and private, restraint and release, allowing them to be contained and uncontainable all at once.
After his formal inaugural address on Monday, Jan. 20 — conducted in the Capitol Rotunda out of fear that his supporters have a level of weather-based common sense comparable to that of drunk fans at wintery NFL games — President Donald Trump made a brief show of adherence to norms by standing around long enough to watch Joe Biden depart.

Ron Howard has made a number of great movies. Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, Splash, Night Shift, Parenthood, and The Paper are all masterpieces of their respective genres, and have emerged as time-honored classics that are worth revisiting for anyone interested in seeing why certain films resonate with a generation. He also has a few films so disastrous that they are worthy of extended academic analysis, such as the derided live-action remake of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Hillbilly Elegy, and the dull conspiracy thriller, The Da Vinci Code. Compared to these incredible highs and mind-boggling lows, 2015’s In the Heart of the Sea feels like a complete and utter oddity because of how forgettable it was. It’s a perfectly adequate, otherwise-insignificant historical epic that just so happens to feature excellent performances by Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland, and Cillian Murphy, who bring to life the real story of a...

Amy Adams has been top-billed in some of our favorite movies for decades. After making a name for herself as a multi-faceted supportive character actor in films like The Fighter, Doubt, and even Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, she's maintained her depth of craft and variety of character work, leading massive hits such as Enchanted, Arrival, and Hillbilly Elegy — and in the process was nominated an astounding six times for the Academy Award. Now, she takes the lead once more in Marielle Heller's (A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood) wild new horror-comedy Nightbitch.

Amy Adams becoming an Oscar winner is long overdue, and while Nightbitch was at one time thought of as a potential contender for her, there's little chance that this is the movie that makes her an Academy Award winner. Adams first emerged as an awards contender in 2006 thanks to her supporting role in Junebug, which led to her earning four Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominations in only eight years. She then received her first Best Actress Oscar nomination in 2014 for American Hustle before going back to supporting five years later with Vice.
Amy Adams' Oscar nominations have left many, myself included, waiting for the day that she'll actually win. That's been more challenging in recent years when she's snubbed for beautiful performances like Arrival. The desire to win an Oscar brought Adams to take bold swings, like Hillbilly Elegy or The Woman in the Window. That continues with her leading role in Nightbitch.

Are “Anora” and “The Brutalist” being underestimated for an ensemble nomination at the Screen Actors Guild Awards? Who will be the surprise SAG nominee of the year? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with their first SAG Awards film predictions.
While “Anora” is perched atop the Best Picture odds at the Oscars, it’s not even in the top five in the SAG ensemble odds, sitting in sixth place. That might be because the Palme d’Or champ is perceived as a Mikey Madison vehicle, but it’s also a sneaky ensemble piece with great performances by Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, and Vache Tovmasyan. Similarly, “The Brutalist” — third in the Best Picture odds but seventh in ensemble — could easily be another film that gets multiple individual nominations, for Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, and Guy Pearce, but get snubbed in ensemble like “The Power of the Dog,...

Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s first running mate John Nance Garner once famously declared that the vice president’s office was “not worth a bucket of warm piss.” In the first and only VP debate of the 2024 presidential election, Gov. Tim Walz and Sen. J.D. Vance on Tuesday went out of their way to prove the ornery Texan pretty much right.
As different as two American politicians can be today except for both being white guys who are aiming for the ultimate benchwarmer gig, Walz and Vance know their brief was to do no evil for 90 minutes on Tuesday.
Despite some sparring over who won the 2020 election, the January 6 Maga assault on the Capitol near the end and Walz condemning Vance for “a damning non-answer” on the matter, the two candidates sealed the fairly dull deal.

Though Gabriel Basso is now well-known for his leading role in The Night Agent, the actor appeared in a number of other awesome movies and TV shows before his big Netflix hit. Hillbilly Elegy is a 2020 film based on Jd Vances memoir detailing the influence of his Kentucky upbringing, but theres another movie that touches on similar themes that resonate even deeper. The controversial Hillbilly Elegy explores the unglamorous side of America, discussing generational poverty as the author reflects on the influence his family had on him. Those who liked Hillbilly Elegy, or liked the themes but wanted more from the movie, should check out Jennifer Lawrences breakout film from a decade prior, Winters Bone.
Winters Bone is a quiet film whose lovingly detailed production design and thoughtful script allow the Ozark setting to really shine. The film covers similar themes of familial obligation, determination, and survival as Netflix's Hillbilly Elegy. However, Winter's Bone is more about enduring a situation and less about escaping to something better.

The critically-panned film earned some Oscar nominations, but its legacy has gotten even messier with the emergence of Vance as a more-than-divisive political figure. Howard worked closely with Vance to adapt his memoir, published in 2016. However, he now laments the author's recent alignment with Donald Trump as his running mate.
Based on his previous conversations with vice-presidential candidate Jd Vance, Ron Howard is now disappointed to hear about the politician's hard Donald Trump pivot. During an interview with Variety to promote his upcoming film Eden, Howard was asked about Vance, stating, "I have been surprised and concerned by a lot of the rhetoric coming out of that campaign." Howard further expanded his thoughts on the general idea of voting for Trump based on his previous working relationship with Vance,...

On paper, there are few filmmakers who seem less-suited to the rigors of a project like Eden than Ron Howard. This is the grim story, after all, of real-life individuals in the late 1920s who were so troubled by the state of humankind that an escape to the Galápagos Islands seemed like the only sensible way out. This is a tale replete with deception, murder, tooth-extraction, one of the more ridiculous childbirth scenes in cinema, and, in what may be a first for Howard, male frontal nudity. (Though my memory of Cocoon is fuzzy.)
Still, Howard deserves credit for taking on a variety of complex projects along with his more audience-friendly efforts. For every The Da Vinci Code or Solo: A Star Wars Story, there is a Frost/Nixon or Rush. (Let’s leave Hillbilly Elegy out of this.) Eden attempts to combine both styles––grit with triumph of the human spirit.

For the last few years especially, Ron Howard seems to be fascinated by bringing true stories to the screen. Whether that comes in the form of fictionalized retelling of actual events, like Rush, In the Heart of the Sea, Thirteen Lives, and yes unfortunately, Hillbilly Elegy, or frequently shifting his focus to documentaries like The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years, the Jos Andrs-focused We Feed People, or this years Jim Henson Idea Man. But while many of these show the resilience of what humanity is capable of, or those who make the world a better place, his latest true story, Eden, couldnt be further from that. In fact, in his half-century as a director, Howard has yet to make a film quite as dark as Eden, a wild shift for a director that often relies on hope and the beauty of humanity. For a director like Howard,...

Toronto film festival: Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby, Sydney Sweeney and Ana de Armas fight for supremacy on a remote island in this 1930s-set true story that descends into tiresomely silly reversals
The films of Ron Howard – usually polite, Oscar-aiming true stories such as A Beautiful Mind or Apollo 13 or solidly made, anonymous IP blockbusters such as The Grinch or The Da Vinci Code – have not shown the director to be someone greatly interested in exploring or even showing much awareness of real, down-to-the-core darkness. His All-American persona, as a well-meaning aw shucks nice guy (who now claims shock upon hearing the subject of his 2020 film Hillbilly Elegy might actually not be such an inspiring figure after all) would not make him seem like the perfect match for a nasty and violent tale of the horrors we’re willing to inflict upon each other to get what we want.

Director Ron Howard has always been a fascinating filmmaker. He’s delivered some of the most entertaining American films ever made, like “Apollo 13,” as well as complete and total disasters, like “Hillbilly Elegy.” That makes “Eden,” a solid yet darkly silly historical thriller set on a remote uninhabited island in the Galápagos, such a breath of fresh air. It’s not his greatest work, but it’s still the type of film that you exhale upon seeing as you realize he’s still got some heaters.
Though built around an excellent ensemble cast of Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby and Ana de Armas, it’s Sydney Sweeney who runs away with the whole thing. She doesn’t always give the loudest performance of the bunch, though it’s her subtle looks and a growing agency that turns “Eden” into something more. Also, if you thought you would never again see...

Ron Howard, the director behind “Hillbilly Elegy” and “A Beautiful Mind,” stressed to Variety the importance of exercising one’s right to vote in this upcoming presidential election in November.
The director stopped by Variety’s Toronto Film Festival Studio to promote his upcoming movie “Eden,” along with the cast, including Sydney Sweeney, Jude Law, Ana de Armas, and Daniel Brühl. There, the director was asked about his previous work adapting current Vice Presidental Candidate Jd Vance’s memoir “Hillbilly Elegy” into the 2020 film starring Amy Adams and Glenn Close. What did Howard think of Vance’s political ascent since adapting his story years ago?
“I have been surprised and concerned by a lot of the rhetoric coming out of that campaign,” Howard said. “There’s no version of me voting for Donald Trump to be President again, whoever the Vice President was. But given the experience that I had then 5, 6 years ago.

Amy Adams finds herself in a hairy situation in the first trailer for Nightbitch.
Searchlight Pictures released the promo on Tuesday for writer-director Marielle Heller’s horror-comedy feature that hits theaters Dec. 6. Also starring Scoot McNairy, Zoë Chao and Mary Holland, the film centers on an artist (Adams) who put her career on hold to become a mother and suddenly realizes that she might be transforming into a canine.
“I’m never going to be smart, happy or thin ever again,” Adams says in the trailer. “Oh, and I’m pretty sure I’m turning into a dog.”
She goes on to grapple with the power of being a woman and says, “Do you ever feel like the big secret is that we are gods? We fucking create life. We are so powerful.” Later, Adams informs someone, “I could crush a walnut with my vagina.”

Glenn Close has fond memories of J.D. Vance visiting the set of Ron Howard’s film adaptation of his bestselling memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy.” She earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Mamaw, Vance’s grandmother, opposite Amy Adams as the vice-presidential candidate’s mother, in the 2020 Netflix drama.
“He brought his wife and his kid. He helped [Gabriel Basso], the actor who was playing him,” Close told me Wednesday night at the Los Angeles premiere of her new Netflix horror movie, Lee Daniels’ “The Deliverance.” “Other members of the family came. At one point I think one Mamaw’s grandsons came and when he saw me, he burst into tears because they said, ‘There’s Mamaw.’”
But now, Close isn’t feeling so nostalgic about Vance. “You only hope that people in our government have a moral backbone and that they don’t say one thing and then say something that’s 150 degrees different,...

There is a warped logic to Lee Daniels, filmmaker of nose-boppingly obvious melodramas and sordid stupidity, moving into horror. When "Borderlands" opened in theaters on August 9, 2024, it brought in just $8.6 million — an astonishingly low figure for a film that cost more than $100 million to make. Then, things just went from bad to worse for "Borderlands" at the box office, with the movie seeing an almost unprecedented 73% drop in its second weekend. Thus far, the video game adaptation has made just $21 million on a reported $115 million budget — and that's before the marketing cost is accounted for. A very rough estimate typically puts marketing at around half a film's production budget, so we're looking at a movie that likely cost in the region of $170 million, making less than a quarter of that at the box office ahead of its fast-approaching streaming debut.
With this in mind, you might be starting to see how much of a historic blunder we're witnessing with "Borderlands." But that's just the box office. Plenty of movies...

Most people who watched Peacock in the week of July 22-28 were watching the Olympics — but two other shows on the NBCUniversal streamer also had a pretty good week.
The swords-and-sandals drama Those About to Die moved into the top 10 original series for the week (it premiered on July 18), likely with an assist from heavy promotion during NBCUniversal’s Olympics telecasts. The series recorded 399 million minutes of viewing time for the week.
Love Island also stayed strong in the week after its July 21 season finale. Though it came down from two straight weeks above a billion minutes, the show’s 724 million minutes of viewing (including earlier seasons on Hulu and Netflix) is very strong for an unscripted series not showing any new episodes during the measured week.

Armando Iannucci's Veep isn't just one of the best, funniest, and smartest shows HBO has ever put out, it's one of the best, funniest, and smartest shows to grace the small screen, regardless of network. And now that Kamala Harris has gone from VP to Presidential candidate, the series' viewership has absolutely skyrocketed. This week, Julia Louis-Dreyfus sat down with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to discuss the renewed interest in the show and recent comparisons between Veep and the current election.
Colbert mentioned that Veep's viewership has risen by 350%. Louis-Dreyfus called that "a great thing," but she also wanted to address part of the reason behind the recent uptick. Specifically, the fact that Selina Meyer and Kamala Harris are two very, very different people.
Let me explain to you: On Veep, I played a narcissistic, megalomaniac sociopath, and that is not Kamala Harris.

Shortly after Donald Trump took office in 2016, budding conservative darling Jd Vance published "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis." A look at Vance's youth in Middletown, Ohio, the story was just the right kind of white poverty porn that Hollywood loves to scoop up and romanticize into Oscar bait — complete with a no-nonsense "Mamaw" who delivers hard truths as one-liners, a matriarch struggling with opioid addiction without access to a rehabilitation facility that resembles a resort spa, and an "inspiring" ending where someone from this family miraculously gets out and attends an Ivy League school. It also came at a time when the U.S., still shell-shocked from what was predicted to be a landslide victory for Hillary Clinton, finally realized that the needs of rural, white, poor communities had been neglected.
Four years later, Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard adapted the book into the Netflix film "Hillbilly Elegy,...

Jd Vance has another book in the works!
The 40-year-old Republican Vice Presidential candidate, who is of course Donald Trump‘s running mate, released the book, “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis,” back in 2016 and he reportedly quietly signed a multi-million deal years ago for a follow up, according to Variety.

His first book is about the Appalachian values of his family from Kentucky and the socioeconomic issues of his home town in Middletown, Ohio.
The year after it was released, his agent at the time reportedly negotiated an $8 million deal for him to pen a follow up book.
Just last year, Jd Vance made less than $50,000 in royalties from the book, but with his rise in status as the VP candidate on the Republican ticket, that number is sure to go way up this year.

As a filmmaker, Lee Daniels tends to get slagged off on for being flamboyantly garish and over-the-top. Some of that is deserved, but the truth is that when he’s cooking on all cylinders Daniels is a gifted filmmaker. “The Deliverance” is the sixth feature he has directed, and I’ve been a fan of three of them: “Precious” (2009), his extraordinary tale of a stunted inner-city teenager’s escape from her domestic hell; “The Paperboy” (2012), a bold and unnerving Southern gothic noir; and “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” (2021), a musical-political biopic that, while flawed, did a superb job of channeling its subject’s complicated ferocity.
So when I say that “The Deliverance,” a demonic-possession movie that Daniels made for Netflix, is one of his kitschy-extreme schlock extravaganzas, I’m not saying that he’s always like that. But sometimes he is. And “The Deliverance” is not without its socially provocative Daniels undercurrents.

Daniels’s film starts well as it points up the social pressures that informed the Latoya Ammons case, but succumbs to tired horror tropes
Ten years ago, Lee Daniels announced he was taking on a movie project based on the real-life case of Latoya Ammons, a single mother who claimed that her house was haunted, that her children were being possessed by evil spirits and that she needed a “deliverance” – in other words, an exorcism. Well, the resulting very silly and mediocre movie has now finally arrived, with Ammons in real life having long since moved out of the house in question; it has itself been bulldozed, and some of the more excitable and credulous media coverage which helped clinch the film deal has cooled in retrospect, leaving behind, perhaps, a greater emphasis on those heartless observers who were callous enough to wonder if Ammons’ paranormal claims were a drama-queen...

Lee Daniels’ first-ever horror effort, “The Deliverance,” is not to be confused with 1972’s “Deliverance.” Although, much like John Boorman’s three-time Oscar nominee about idiot canoers going through hell in rural Georgia, it does make movie-watching pretty painful.
Not since “Hillbilly Elegy” has Netflix done Glenn Close so dirty. That’s true even taking into account her small part in the hugely horrible “Heart of Stone” for the streamer last year. “The Deliverance” director Daniels, an ambitious storyteller with an admirably spotty track record, is best known for creating the TV show “Empire” with Danny Strong and, before that, helming the Sundance darling “Precious,”.

One of the stars of Hillbilly Elegy, the 2020 Ron Howard film based on the life of Jd Vance, is throwing some shade at the vice presidential candidate. Vance came under fire recently after an interview with Tucker Carlson resurfaced from 2021, where he lamented that the United States was being run by "a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they've made, and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too." Since then, a number of celebrities have come out against Vance, and you can now add Glenn Close to the mix.

Gabriel Basso's role in The Night Agent propelled him to fame, with critics praising the show's engaging plot and exciting twists. Despite his success, Basso's previous film Hillbilly Elegy received poor reviews, overshadowing his work in the thriller. Basso's portrayal of Peter Sutherland in The Night Agent showcases his talent and potential as an up-and-coming star in Hollywood.
Gabriel Basso has seen a recent boost in fame after starring in Netflix's hit political thriller, The Night Agent, but unfortunately, not all of Basso's roles have been so well-received. In 2023, Basso took on the lead role of Peter Sutherland in Netflix's sixth-most-watched television show of all time, The Night Agent. The thriller follows an FBI agent who, after receiving a mysterious phone call, gets pulled into a dangerous political conspiracy. At the moment, anticipation is high for The Night Agent season 2, yet Basso is also trending for another less exciting reason.
