February is Black History Month, and that means it's a great time to take stock of some of the Black creators who have helped mold the art forms we so love. In the realm of fantasy and science fiction books, there are a number of Black authors who have had a large impact on the genres. And while you shouldn't just be relegating your reading of them to February, this month is still an ideal moment to pause and appreciate all that Black artists have contributed. (And to add some new books to your Tbr while you're at it.)

We're going to run through 16 authors who have helped shape the genres of fantasy and science fiction as they stand today. Some will be long-standing pillars of the speculative fiction space; others, rising stars who are charting its future. All have created works which have resonated deeply with readers, and are well worth checking out.

Rights to the 2018 book by Nigerian American novelist Adeyemi were acquired by Paramount in 2022 after a planned adaptation by Fox2000 and then Disney’s Lucasfilm stalled. Prince-Bythewood will develop another pass of a draft written by Adeyemi, who will also executive produce the film alongside Reggie Rock Bythewood. The latest update on this “shelved” project comes from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy herself, who sat down with IGN to set the record straight during Star Wars Celebration 2023. Unfortunately, her comments on the project, which she says was never in development to begin with, actually make this long-winded behind-the-scenes saga even more confusing.

“Kevin Feige’s project was something announced in the press, or I suppose fandom. But there was nothing. Nothing ever got developed. We never discussed an idea,” Kennedy told IGN.

In a new interview with IGN, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy addressed reports that Marvel leader Kevin Feige’s planned Star Wars project was shelved by saying the potential film actually “never got developed.”

“Kevin Feige’s project was something announced in the press, or I suppose fandom. But there was nothing. Nothing ever got developed. We never discussed an idea,” Kennedy claimed in the interview. “As everybody knows, Kevin’s a huge Star Wars fan and if he did come up with something, I would be all ears. The Brian Robbins-led studio won a competitive auction for the bestseller, published by Simon & Schuster’s Atria label. Temple Hill will produce a feature adaptation and Serle is executive producing with David Stone of Tfc Productions.
