Rhett Miller revisits a song he co-wrote nearly 10 years ago, with Turnpike Troubadours singer Evan Felker, to announce his new solo album, A Lifetime of Riding by Night. “Come as You Are,” featuring Felker on harmony vocals, is a lilting ballad about separation from those you love. In Miller and Felker’s case, it specifically refers to a life spent on the road.
Miller, the longtime frontman of Old 97’s, says in a statement, “That song came together at a time when Evan and I were both wrestling with the...

[This story contains major spoilers from the Dying for Sex season finale.]
After their first Zoom call, co-creators Elizabeth Meriwether and Kim Rosenstock knew Michelle Williams was their Molly Kochan.
The role sees Williams’s character balancing humor and tragedy up until her final moments. Adapted by Meriwether and Rosenstock, Dying for Sex is based on the real-life stories of the late Molly, shared on her podcast that she co-hosted with best friend Nikki Boyer (played by Jenny Slate in the series) about exploring her sexuality in her 40s after she was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.
The FX series’ wild sex scenes push the boundaries and show Molly experimenting with being a dominatrix and trying out her sexual partner’s kinks. One, in particular, was in episode five’s “My Pet,” where one of the men Molly is with is dressed in a dog suit — and stays in character. He asks Molly to perform his biggest desire,...

Today, April 5th, 2025, marks the 31st anniversary of the day the music world lost one of its most influential and enigmatic figures: Kurt Cobain. Found dead in his Seattle home on April 5th, 1994, forensic investigation later determined that the Nirvana frontman had tragically taken his own life on April 5th, 1994, at the age of just 27. The news sent a shockwave through a generation that had found its voice, its angst, and its reluctant icon in the raw, unfiltered honesty of his music.
Kurt Donald Cobain, born on February 20th, 1967, in Aberdeen, Washington, was more than just a musician; he was a cultural touchstone. His rise with Nirvana in the late 1980s and early 1990s coincided with a seismic shift in popular music, pushing the raw energy and disillusionment of grunge into the mainstream. With bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl, Cobain crafted a sound that was both abrasive and undeniably melodic,...

Exclusive: Grant Rosenmeyer, Sean San José (Sing Sing), Nora Dunn, Katherine Cunningham (Yellowstone) and Alexis Allotta (Happily Never After) are starring in the semi-autobiographical drama Behind the Eight-Ball. The pic reps the feature directorial debut of Nathan Israileff.
Loosely inspired by Israileff’s experiences, Behind the Eight-Ball follows Trevor (Rosenmeyer) a high-functioning cocaine addict whose spiraling substance abuse threatens his career and closest relationships – forcing him to confront his demons and fight for redemption as his life unravels around him.
Says the filmmaker, “The film is a ‘love letter’ to functional addicts who are afraid to speak up or admit embarrassment for their ongoing issues, letting them know they are not alone and the depression they feel is felt by many.”
Israileff and Rosenmeyer are producing through their companies Artisanal Interrobang and Florida Hill respectively alongside producer Katelyn Henslin.

Peter Wolf, has always been one of the great rock & roll raconteurs, ever since his days as the loudmouth singer of the J. Geils Band. But the Boston blues madman has finally written the book everyone always hoped he would write, with Waiting on the Moon: Artists, Poets, Drifters, Grifters, and Goddesses. It’s a music memoir like no other — instead of chronicling his rock-star career, Wolf tells stories about the characters he met along the way, from Muddy Waters to Andy Warhol, from Alfred Hitchcock to Bob Dylan. “I...

Plot: Inspired by actual events, Los Frikis is a coming-of-age story set in early 90s Cuba, where a group of punk rockers, in search of freedom, deliberately inject HIV to live at a government-run treatment home so they can create their own utopia.
Review: In 1991, when I was ten years old, I spent most of my days listening to Nirvana’s Nevermind on repeat, riding my BMX through local dirt trails, and recording episodes of MTV’s Liquid Television on VHS, hoping to catch another chapter of Peter Chung’s Æon Flux. All things considered, it was a breezy way for an American adolescent to grow up. Little did I know that people were suffering in other parts of the world, like Cuba, where a Marxist–Leninist politician named Fidel Castro pressed his tar and nicotine-covered thumb upon the necks of his people. How could I...

Nirvana’s Nevermind has just become only the ninth release to spend 700 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart. When you eliminate greatest-hits compilations, it’s only the fourth studio LP to achieve that milestone.
The game-changing 1991 album sits at No. 120 on the latest Billboard 200 chart, it’s 700th non-consecutive week on the overall albums tally. As far as studio albums are considered, only Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon (990 weeks), Metallica’s “Black Album” (767 weeks), and Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans (706 weeks) top Nirvana’s sophomore LP.
Among the other releases in the Top 9 are greatest-hits collections from Bob Marley and the Wailers (865 weeks), Journey (835 weeks), Creedence Clearwater Revival (724 weeks), Eminem (714 weeks), and Guns N’ Roses (704 weeks).
Upon its release in September 1991, Nevermind changed the face of rock music. At a time when hair metal was dominating MTV and radio airwaves, the Nirvana album helped usher in a grunge and alternative revolution,...

In the early 1990s, a couple hundred members of the Cuban punk scene deliberately infected themselves with HIV in an effort to escape the severe economic depression that crippled the country after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The sick were sent to state-run sanitariums, where they had free access to food, medicine, and the rock music that Fidel Castro had banned since before they were born. The “Frikis,” as the kids from that subculture were called, hoped that a cure for the virus would be developed by the time Cuba’s “Special Period” came to an end and their home city of Havana was a livable place again. Such hopes were tragically misplaced.

Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer,” based on the slender novel by William S. Burroughs and starring Daniel Craig as the Burroughs stand-in, is now in theaters nationwide from A24. And chances are, coming out of the psychedelic drama, you’re going to jam out to the songs from the movie’s soundtrack.
That’s because Guadagnino took an anachronistic approach to the music he chose for the movie – it might be set in Mexico City in the early 1950s, but that doesn’t keep him from using more modern tunes. And that’s to say nothing of the gorgeous, elegiac original score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, the filmmaker’s collaborators on “Bones and All” and, earlier this year, “Challengers.”
“Queer” soundtrack:
• “All Apologies,” performed by Sinéad O’Connor
• “Sin Ti,” performed by Trío Los Panchos
• “Mi Corazon,” performed by Rafael Mendez and His Orchestra
• “Muchos Besos,” performed by Martin Y Malena

Editor’s Note: This review was originally posted during the 2024 Venice Film Festival. A24 opens “Queer” in select theaters on November 27.
As an adaptation of “Junkie” author William S. Burroughs’ second novel, “Queer” is about chemical addictions, yes. But it’s even more about being so addicted to a person that, no matter how much you turn yourself inside out trying to get them to love you — charming them with your literary voice, lathering yourself into a stupor on drugs, or even going to the far reaches of a jungle — they will never love you the way you want them to, and even telepathy couldn’t help explain to you why.
Luca Guadagnino’s profound and kaleidoscopic new film begins in a post-World War II Mexico City of the mind and ends in the Ecuadorian rainforest on an ayahuasca trip that’s part Apichatpong Weerasethakul, part “2001: A Space Odyssey,...

A mere nine months after the triumphant Grand Slam of Challengers, director Luca Guadagnino is back again. Queer is a very different beast to his earlier, tennis-based ménage à trois: less straightforwardly entertaining, murkier and messier in its intentions and approach. But it has all of his recurring themes and obsessions: sex and desire and longing and melancholy. It’s also perhaps almost too woozy for its own good.
Challengers writer Justin Kuritzkes reunites with his director to (loosely) adapt the novella of the same name by writer William S. Burroughs. Less subversive than Burroughs’ most famous work, Naked Lunch, in Guadagnino and Kuritzkes’ hands it becomes more intensely personal, leaning into the book’s autobiographical elements, an unorthodox tribute to the Beat Generation hero.
Queer may not be Guadagnino's best film, but it is arguably the most him.

Edd Griles, who directed Cyndi Lauper in the bouncy music video for “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” the singer’s breakthrough hit and a wildly popular tune in the early days of MTV, has died. He was 78.
Griles died Tuesday at the Actors Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s, his daughter, Allyson Monson, told The Hollywood Reporter.
The New York native also directed music videos for Huey Lewis and the News (“The Heart of Rock & Roll,” “If This Is It,” “Stuck with You”); Eddie Murphy (“Party All the Time”); Lee Greenwood (“God Bless the USA”); Peter Wolf (“Come as You Are”); Sheena Easton (“Jimmy Mack”); Deep Purple and Rainbow; and others.

Update: YouTube and Sesac have come to terms on a new deal. “Content (that was previously blocked) will be restored across YouTube services over the next day or two,” YouTube said in a statement on Monday night.
Hundreds of classic music videos and songs by Nirvana, Adele, Bob Dylan, Kendrick Lamar, Green Day, and hundreds more are currently unavailable on YouTube amid a copyright dispute between the video platform and the performance rights organization, Sesac.
A YouTube spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday, that the site and Sesac were “unable to reach an equitable agreement” before the expiration of their copyright deal.
“We take copyright very seriously and as a result, content represented by Sesac is no longer available on YouTube in the US,” the spokesperson said. “We are in active conversations with Sesac and are hoping to reach a new deal as soon as possible.”

In “Queer,” Luca Guadagnino’s ebulliently scuzzy and adventurous adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ early confessional novel, William Lee (Daniel Craig), a dissipated refugee from America, is having dinner with Eugene (Drew Starkey), the beautiful young man he met in the underbelly of Mexico City, when he starts to explain how he came to grips with his sexual desires.
Lee, who wears white linen suits, a fedora and clear-framed glasses, a trusty handgun, and an appraising scowl, looks like the dandy version of a CIA spook. It’s the early 1950s, and though he drinks around the clock and is frequently a disheveled mess, in his appearance and demeanor he’s something of a straightarrow. At first, he says, he regarded his proclivities as a “curse.” He shook with horror at the word “homosexual,” which made him think of “the painted, simpering female impersonators,” he says. “Could I have been one of those subhuman things?...

Killing Joke guitarist Kevin “Geordie” Walker’s influence is vast: Metallica attempted to emulate his guitar snarl on their cover of “The Wait”; Kurt Cobain admittedly ripped off his riff to “Eighties” for “Come As You Are”; LCD Soundsystem synthesized his riff on “Change” and turned it into “Losing My Edge.” Other artists who praised Walker’s playing and Killing Joke include Jimmy Page, Trent Reznor, My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields, and all of Faith No More. Yet Walker himself never became a household name before his death on...

For a music journalist in the Nineties, there could have been no better phone call. Not long after Michael Azerrad hung out with Kurt Cobain for Nirvana’s first Rolling Stone cover story, Courtney Love reached out to ask him if he wanted to write a book about Nirvana. He agreed, and after nine months of breakneck work, he managed to get Come As You Are out in 1993, just in time to coincide with Nirvana’s Nevermind follow-up, In Utero.

A new deluxe reissue of Nirvana’s In Utero, is out today (October 27th) to coincide with the album’s 30th anniversary.
The original In Utero arrived after Nirvana had already become global superstars, and is thematically characterized by the band’s discomfort with their status, particularly from frontman, Kurt Cobain. Celebrating it on the occasion of its 25th anniversary in 2018, Consequence contributor Ryan Bray praised the album as “arguably the truest representation of what Nirvana was: a massive act with the principles and integrity of one half its size… It’s a difficult but ironclad document of artistic bravery.”
Now, the album is being honored in a whole new fashion. Among the 53 unreleased tracks are two full In Utero-era concerts, including the band’s final performance in Seattle, as well as six bonus live tracks recorded at various shows around the same time. Additionally, the album’s original tracklist,...

Twinkling Watermelon will make you laugh out loud and cry within a span of minutes. At the risk of speaking too soon, we highly recommend this show. If you have a gaping hole for feel-good, slice-of-life family dramas, then put everything down and watch this show. It’s a shame we don’t get to see all the episodes at once, and even with an adorable premise (and cast), the show, in the usual K-drama style, has a lot of secrets that will probably be revealed very slowly, and we’ll have to painstakingly wait another six weeks for the show to be completed. Hyun-Wook, who is really getting acknowledged for his fantastic work, is already becoming a big star, playing roles in shows like “D.P.” and now with a lead role such as this one. He shines in comedy, and together with Ryeoun, they make a terrific duo. At the same time,...

Soon after Michael Azerrad first published the touchstone Nirvana biography Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana in 1993, his subject’s future was cut much too short. Now, in honor of its 30th anniversary, Azerrad is bringing the book up to date with The Amplified Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana, a “super-expanded” version that’s out October 24th.
Come As You Are was already celebrated upon its release, written in close collaboration with Nirvana and even co-signed by Kurt Cobain as “the best rock book [he’d] ever read.” But just seven months after the biography was published, Cobain died by suicide, completely re-contextualizing the stories Azerrad had just told — and designating Come As You Are as the only book about Nirvana to ever feature original interviews with all three band members.

Courtney Love, 58, posted a tribute to her late husband Kurt Cobain on Instagram, marking the 29th anniversary of his death. The image was a black-and-white photo of Cobain’s hands clasped together that was taken by R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe.
Love wrote, “It is one of the only images (or sounds/ tastes etc) that makes me miss him deeply. He chanted with me & often, & truly was moved by our Buddhist practice. Thus, I know he’s in an enlightened place, more so, than we here in mappo are.”
Cobain is known as the lead vocalist for the band Nirvana. The 90s rock group helped popularize the grunge scene in the Pacific Northwest with singles like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Come As You Are.”
Love, the lead singer of Hole, and Cobain married in 1992. Cobain died by suicide on April 5, 1994. The couple shared one child together, daughter Frances Bean.
