Why Has Shrek 5 Been Delayed to 2027?
Image
Shrek 5 has been pushed back, and fans will now have to wait until June 30, 2027, to see the big green ogre return to the big screen. Previously announced to be released on December 23, 2026, Variety reported that the movie has now been delayed by six months. So far, Universal and DreamWorks have not given an official reason for the delay.

However, since the studio has a history of releasing its biggest animated hits, like Despicable Me and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, in the summer, the outlet assumed it was a reason for the rescheduling. However, fans have their own hilarious theory, wherein @NewsM101 claimed on X that the plot was too easy to guess.

A viral idea about Shrek being an overprotective dad to his teenage daughter went around, and now people are joking that the studio is probably rewriting the whole thing to surprise everyone. Additionally, u/naynaythewonderhorse claimed...

Shrek 5 Is Pushed Back Till 2027
Image
Recent reports indicate that Universal and DreamWorks Animation have postponed the upcoming “Shrek 5” film by about six months. Fans have already waited 15 years for a new film, but they will need to wait a bit longer.

In a report from Variety, the film has been pushed back from December 23, 2026, to June 30, 2027, replacing an “untitled event film” that was originally in that time slot. The “untitled event film” has been moved up to an April 16, 2027, release date.

Why did Universal move it back?

We don’t know. They never gave a reason for the change, but it could be due to production delays or the potential competition from “Avengers: Doomsday” or “Ice Age 6”. Both films are currently slated for release on December 18, 2026.

Fans weren’t thrilled with the updated animation style and jokes shown in the teaser from February. With many complaining about how Donkey looked, including Donkey from Universal Orlando.

‘Shrek 5’ Release Date Delayed to June 2027
Image
The new release date for “Shrek 5” is Far, Far Away.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation have postponed the fifth “Shrek” film from Dec. 23, 2026, to June 30, 2027. This is the second release date delay for “Shrek 5,” which was originally set for July 2026. The studio didn’t give a reason for the hold-up, but Universal has fielded outsized success with animated fare — such as “Despicable Me” franchise, “How to Train Your Dragon” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” — in the summer months.

On its new release date, “Shrek 5” will open less than a week after Sony’s animated “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.” On its prior date in December 2026, the family film was scheduled to debut in the wake of Disney’s “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Ice Age 6.”

As part of the move, Universal has shifted up the premiere of Illumination’s Untitled Event Film to April 16, 2027, instead of its original late June date.

Anthony Mackie's Twisted Metal Has A Meta Joke That Makes No Sense
Image
This article contains a mild spoiler for "Twisted Metal" season 2.

Video game adaptations are all the rage in Hollywood. Long gone is the time when even the announcement of turning a video game into a film or TV show was considered instantly doomed by audiences. Nowadays, video game movies break box office records, while shows receive critical acclaim and earn awards. There are cinematic games like "The Last of Us" that just copy and paste the story onto the screen with minimal change, but also games with light plots that require more thought put into translating gameplay into a cohesive movie, like "Mortal Kombat" or "The Super Mario Bros. Movie."

In a way, video games are the new comic books, and just like comic book movies are full of references for hardcore fans to delight themselves with, so do video game adaptations have plenty of references to their source material.

‘The Bad Guys 2’ Marks a New Era of Franchise Building for DreamWorks
Image
With “The Bad Guys 2,” Universal hopes for some mid-budget success with families before kids return to school. But for producers DreamWorks Animation, this marks a key step in the company’s efforts to build new franchises from the ground up in an entertainment landscape littered with loud and shiny alternatives.

“The Bad Guys” hit theaters in spring 2022 at a time when it was still unclear how willing families were to return to theaters after the Covid-19 shutdown. Against a reported $70 million budget, the film made a respectable $250 million worldwide, and two years later, a sequel was announced.

That sequel, which arrives this weekend and is projected to match or slightly exceed its predecessor’s $24.9 million domestic opening, is the first follow-up to an animated film released after the shutdown. There have been sequels to other films released in the past four years, namely horror titles like “Smile” and “M3GAN,...

Horror Video Game Adaptation With 53% Rt Score Makes Netflix Charts After Its Streaming Debut
Image
Video game adaptations have been on the rise in the past few years. On television, this has taken the form of hit shows such as The Last of Us and Fallout. Both titles have been huge hits upon their releases and have received Emmy nominations for their performances and technical elements.

On the movie side, video game adaptations have been some of the highest-grossing films of the last few years. This notably includes The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which made $1.3 billion upon its release. This year, A MinecraftMovie was also a huge success, making over $955 million.

While both Super Mario Bros. Movie and A Minecraft Movie were aimed primarily at children, this is not the case for all video game adaptations. The more family-friendly adaptations based on mega-hit games tend to have the best box office chances, but there are certainly other works being adapted. Now, one of this year's...

At an Sdcc panel that ScreenRant attended, it was confirmed that Bugs Bunny will appear in Coyote vs Acme. Bugs' appearance was revealed via footage from the movie, in which Will Forte's character Kevin interacts with multiple Looney Tunes characters. In this clip, Wiles has hired Kevin. Netflix In Numbers

Netflix

Mapping out success: Netflix dropped its latest viewing data dump last week, with Adolescence and Squid Game unsurprisingly dominant in the streamer’s self-edited chart. While it has to be noted that Netflix marks its own homework and we can’t 100% on the veracity of the numbers, they paint a clearer picture than anything its rivals provide. And with this being the fourth What We Watched report, Jake decided to crunch the numbers, with a helping hand from ChatGPT, and was rewarded with this fascinating insight into how the global streamer is consumed. Underrated 2025 Video Game Horror Movie Is Now On Netflix After $53M Box Office
Image
Video game adaptations continue to be released at a fairly regular cadence. Recently, they've been finding success in the form of TV shows. Titles like The Last of Us and Fallout have been major viewership hits as streaming TV shows adapting popular games.

In the world of movies, video game adaptations have a checkered past. Assassin's Creed (2016), for example, was a major disappointment, and it's one of a number of failed attempts to turn a video game into a massive blockbuster movie franchise. Over the last few years, however, there have been a number of success stories in this space.

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is still going strong after the debut film in 2020, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a major hit in 2023, grossing $1.360 billion at the box office. This year, A Minecraft Movie became a viral sensation and was a big success in theaters.

Those titles are all family-friendly adventures,...

A24 announces a new English-language voice cast led by Michelle Yeoh for the highest-grossing animated film Ne Zha 2
Lewis Black, Tony Hale, Liza Lapira, Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Maya Hawke, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Paul Walter Hauser, and Ayo Edebiri in Vice-versa 2 (2024)
When most people think about the highest-grossing animated films of all time, they gravitate toward movies like Pixar’s Inside Out 2 ($1.6B+), Disney’s Frozen II ($1.4B+), The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.3B+), and 2013’s Frozen ($1.3B+). However, there’s one film that outshines them all: Yang Yu aka Jiaozi’s Ne Zah 2, a Chinese animated film that, earlier this year, earned $2.215B at the global box office. It goes without saying that more people should experience this animated phenomenon, and now, thanks to A24, they will!

According to A24, an English-language dub of Ne Zah 2 will be released on August 22. It will feature Michelle Yeoh as the lead character’s mother, Lady Yin.

“A rebellious young boy, Ne Zha, is feared by the gods and born to mortal parents with wild, uncontrolled powers,” a synopsis for the film reads. “Now he’s faced with an ancient force intent on destroying humanity,...

‘Barbie’ Animated Feature In Works From Illumination & Mattel Studios
Image
Exclusive: Two years after the record-setting release of Barbie, the feminist live-action take on Mattel’s iconic doll that became a cultural phenomenon, Illumination and Mattel Studios have finalized a deal to develop a new Barbie movie that will be the first in animation for theaters, sources tell Deadline.

Reps for Illumination, Universal, and Mattel declined to comment. Not yet dated, we’re told the film will be released by Universal Pictures, which has an exclusive financing and distribution partnership with Illumination. No word yet on the plot of this Barbie or creatives attached.

Transcending all expectations as it grossed over $1.44 billion worldwide, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, starring Margot Robbie, impacted culture like few other films in recent memory.
