Ernie Hudson is taking over the late Carl Weathers’ voice role of action figure Combat Carl in Toy Story 5, Deadline has confirmed.

Prior to his passing due to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, pro football player turned actor Weathers voiced Combat Carl in two projects: the 2013 TV special Toy Story of Terror! and 2019’s Toy Story 4, which grossed over $1 billion worldwide. He died in February 2024, aged 76.

While official plot details for Toy Story 5 remain under wraps, ahead of the film’s June 19, 2026 unveiling, star Tim Allen said in an interview with Wivb that the film is “a lot about Jessie,” the cowgirl doll voiced by Joan Cusack. “Tom [Hanks] and I do — Woody and I — do realign,” added the actor, who voices Buzz Lightyear. “And there’s an unbelievable opening scene with Buzz Lightyears. I can give you that, but I can’t give you much more.”

Marvel Studios and Disney Jr. have announced a brand-new Iron Man animated series. Marvel's Iron Man and his Awesome Friends, the first preschool Iron Man series, will debut on Disney Jr. and Disney+ in the summer of 2025.

Per Marvel, the series will follow a young Tony Stark/Iron Man and his world-saving best friends, Riri Williams/Ironheart and Amadeus Cho/Iron Hulk. The three young heroes will "work to make the world a better place, protecting their city and each other." Marvel's Iron Man and his Awesome Friends will feature the voice of Mason Blomberg as Iron Man, Kapri Ladd as Ironheart, Aidyn Ahn as Iron Hulk, David Kaye as Vision, and Fred Tatasciore as Gamma. More casting announcements will arrive at a later date. Disney Jr. and Marvel Studios produced the series in association with Atomic Cartoons.

Disney+ is expanding its recently launched Streams feature with four new live channels of themed content rolling out to the service’s premium subscribers.

The offerings include “Hallowstream,” a seasonally themed collection of content across the streamer’s catalog for Halloween; “Hits & Heroes,” a compilation of action-packed stories from the Disney, Marvel and Star Wars brands; “Throwbacks,” a destination for always-on nostalgic pop culture content; and”Real Life,” a line up of traditional documentaries, biopics and true stories.

On Sept. 4, Disney+ launched ABC News Live within the service for all of its subscribers, as well as Disney+ Playtime, which includes kids programming such as “Bluey,” “Sofia the First,” “The Lion Guard,” “Puppy Dog Pals,” and “Minnie’s Bow-Toons.” The two channels have driven over 10 million streaming hours from U.S. subscribers and resulted in “early signs of overall engagement lift” amongst the subscribers who watch them, according to the company.

SiriusXM is launching a new kid-friendly channel called Disney Jr. Radio, which will be available exclusively on the SiriusXM streaming radio app.

The channel spun up on Tuesday and is geared toward pre-schoolers, young kids and their families, with shows like “Mickey Mornings” from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Eastern Time and “Disney Jr. Lullabies” in the afternoon and evening hours. The schedule is meant to “mirror a preschooler’s key moments throughout the day,” a spokesperson for SiriusXM said.

The news that Disney+ and its corporate siblings Hulu and ESPN+ will be raising prices in October was met with predictable backlash from observers, as 2024 will mark the third year in a row that Disney hiked subscription rates for its streamers. The company did try to soften the blow slightly by announcing a new feature that will be introduced on Disney+ in the coming weeks: continuous playlists that allow viewers to lean back and watch a steady flow of shows and movies rather than forcing audiences to constantly choose what’s next.

Key Details: Continuous playlists will function much the same as Fast channels, but they’ll only be available to paid subscribers. ABC News Live and a preschool-themed playlist will be the first selections introduced, and will be followed by others.

Disney will hike the price of most streaming plans as of October 17, the company said today, about a year after its last increase in the fall of 2023.

Disney reports earnings tomorrow morning. Media companies across the board have been waging regular streaming price increases over the past several years as the Dtc landscape rationalizes and there’s a push to turn profitable.

Here’s what’s changing:

The new prices will see Disney+ with ads rise to $9.99 from $7.99 a month. Ad-free will cost $15.99, from $13.99.

The Duo Basic with Disney+ and Hulu goes up $1 to $10.99. The Duo Premium is the one plan that stays the same, at $19.99.

Hulu with ads rises from $7.99 to $9.99. Without ads, it goes up a buck to $18.99.

ESPN+ with ads also rises by $1 to $11.99.

Hulu + Live TV with adds rises from $76.99 to $82.99. No ads will cost $95.99, up from $89.99.

Here comes another round of “streamflation”: Disney is raising the prices for all stand-alone tiers of Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ in the U.S. this fall, as well as for most of its bundles.

The higher prices, which go into effect Oct. 17, are of course aimed at boosting Disney’s top-line streaming revenue and, ideally, their profitability. For now, the pricing for the recently introduced Disney+/Hulu/Max combo offered in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery will remain unchanged, and the Disney+/Hulu Premium no-ads bundle will stay at $19.99/month.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” makes its Disney+ debut in February, but another title joining the library this month has us waiting eagerly.

The limited series “Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever” dives into the film’s soundtrack, from Ludwig Goransson’s score to the chanting and vocals of Wakandan tribes. “The sonic world of Wakanda is evolving,” music consultant Seni Saraki says in the show teaser. It’s impossible to imagine Ryan Coogler’s film series separate from that world, and deeply exciting for “Black Panther” fans to watch that evolution. “Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever” premiers February 22 on Disney+.

It’s rare that a month goes by on Disney+ without a major new Marvel or Star Wars release. With its list of new releases of November 2022 though, Disney+ is going to attempt to go without it’s two big tentpoles.

That’s not to say that neither Star Wars nor Marvel will play a role on Disney+ this month. Star Wars prequel series Andor will continue to chug along, culminating with its 12th episode and season 1 finale on Nov. 23. Meanwhile, a couple of minor Marvel documentaries make their premieres in the beginning of the month.

In place of new Star Wars or Marvel blockbusters, Disney+ is turning some of its lesser-known franchises this month. Disenchanted, the long-awaited sequel to 2007’s Enchanted, premieres on Nov. 18. That will be followed by the season premiere of Willow, a series based on the 1988 movie of the same name.

Highlighting Disney+’s list of new releases for October 2022 is Werewolf by Night. We’re officially entering the spooky season and while Disney+ already dropped a few scary things in September, they’re doubling down in October. One of their most Halloween-centric offerings on display is “Werewolf By Night,” which audiences first learned about just a few weeks ago during Disney’s splashy Marvel and LucasFilm panel at the D23 Expo.

Directed by longtime Pixar collaborator, and acclaimed composer, Michael Giacchino, “Werewolf By Night” is the first Marvel Halloween special. The trailer was shown during D23 Expo and looked like a beautiful tribute to old school horror films, but also heavy on the (possibly implied) gore and scares. Filmed in black and white, the special feels a complete throwback to the old-school Universal frights of the past; think “Bride of Frankenstein” or “The Invisible Man.” The special follows Gael García Bernal as a man with the ability to become a werewolf, and explores...

This month Disney will be hosting Disney+ Day, which means the streamer’s list of new releases for September 2022 is more jam-packed than usual.

Keeping with tradition, however, the biggest release this month is of the Marvel of Star Wars variety, with Star Wars taking its turn after Marvel did with She-Hulk in August. Prequel series Andor is set to premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 21 with three episodes. Starring Diego Luga as the titular rogue, Andor will take place in the time before Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Latoya Raveneau, director of “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder,” has entered an overall deal at Disney to develop and produce animated projects with Disney Television Animation and 20th Television Animation. The deal also includes terms for live-action content development.

Through the new agreement, Raveneau is now developing a pilot at Disney Television Animation under the leadership of Meredith Roberts, the studio’s senior vice president and general manager. Raveneau will also work under Marci Proietto, the executive vice president of 20th Television Animation.

The Rise Up, Sing Out EP and Proud Family revival series director has signed an overall deal to develop and produce animated projects with Disney Television Animation and 20th Television Animation, along with live-action content development.

She also is developing a pilot at Disney Television Animation, under the leadership of Meredith Roberts, SVP/general manager, Television Animation, at Disney Branded Television.

Elisha Ej Williams has been announced will play the character at the wheel of the story.

The news was announced by Fred Savage, the lead of the original 1988-93 TV series.

The series will focus on a Black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama.

"Though a little insecure, a tad awkward, and a bit self-conscious, he is determined to make his mark on the world around him,” the character description reads.

In The Dark actress, Saycon Sengbloh was cast as Dean's mother, Lillian, earlier this month.

Lillian is described as a “confident, kind, perceptive” mother, wife, and full-time accountant.

Intelligent and hard-working, Lillian “knows exactly the right thing to say to convince you of anything,” but she will always go out of her way to put her family first.

Savage will also exec-produce along with Empire's Lee Daniels and Saladin K. Patterson.

The Wonder Years has found its new Kevin Arnold. Elisha “Ej” Williams has been tapped to star as Dean, the new Kevin in ABC’s The Wonder Years single-camera comedy reboot pilot, from Dave exec producer Saladin Patterson, Fred Savage and Empire co-creator Lee Daniels.

Savage, who played Kevin in the original dramedy series, has officially passed the torch to a new generation. You can watch of clip of Savage and Patterson delivering the good news to Williams below.

U.S. production, finance and management firm The Cartel has appointed Apa’s former head of motion picture literary Ryan Saul as manager/producer and has promoted Bradford Bricken to partner.

The Cartel’s co-ceo Stan Spry said Saul had a “penchant for discovering young talent,” and added “his ability to nurture that talent is something we pride ourselves in.”

Saul began his career as an executive assistant at the Walt Disney Company and went on to become head of motion picture literary at Apa. Most recently, he was a motion picture literary agent at Paradigm Talent Agency.

According to a statement, “He has garnered the reputation of being able to develop clients from unknown writers or young short film directors to become some of the leading creatives in Hollywood, working on some of the biggest studio films in production.”

ABC’s venerable soap General Hospital leads all shows and CBS and Amazon Prime Video top all networks in nominations for the 47th annual Daytime Emmy Awards, which were unveiled Thursday. Winners will be revealed June 26 during a live virtual ceremony on CBS, returning the awards show to broadcast primetime for the first time since 2011.

General Hospital scored a total of 23 noms, edging rivals NBC’s Days of Our Lives (22 noms) and CBS’ Young and the Restless (21) and The Bold and the Beautiful (13). The digital soaps followed, led by Netflix’s Eastsiders and Amazon Prime’s Studio City both with eight noms apiece.

All four broadcast soaps are up for the top drama series honor, while Eastsiders and Studio City are joined by Amazon Prime’s After Forever, The Bay The Series and Dark/Web in the top digital drama race.

Travis Braun has entered an overall deal with Disney Channels Worldwide, Variety has learned exclusively.

Under the deal, Braun will develop and produce both animated and live-action content across Disney Channel, Disney Xd, Disney Junior, as well as Disney’s upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service.

Hollywood composers Brad Breeck and Gabriel Hays have come on board to pen the soundtrack for TV series “Snow Queen: Gerda and the Keepers of Wonders.”

Breeck is best known for his work on Disney’s “Gravity Falls” and the “Voltron” series reboot for Dreamworks and Netflix. He was the composer for MTV’s “Awkward” and Cartoon Network’s “We Bare Bears.” For Nickelodeon he scored the series “Fanboy and Chumchum” and penned the theme for “Robot and Monster.”

Hays is most well-known for writing music for the Disney animated series “Star Darlings” and “Whisker Haven.” He has also composed for numerous other films, documentaries and TV shows, including Disney’s “Puppy Dog Pals” and “Pickle and Peanut,” “We Bare Bears” for Cartoon Network, PBS’s “Half the Sky” and “A Path Appears,” and “7 Deadly Sins” for Showtime.
