Director David Leitch's career seemed to be on the up and up after he broke out with the first John Wick film, which he co-directed with Chad Stahelski. Stahelski stayed on with the franchise, elevating it to massive heights, while Leitch moved on to other pastures. He directed Deadpool 2 and Hobbs & Shaw, both of which grossed over $750 million worldwide. But while his franchise films were doing well, his "original" projects were struggling. The spy thriller Atomic Blonde made exactly $100 million worldwide, while his latest film, The Fall Guy, underperformed with less than $200 million globally. In 2022, Leitch's Bullet Train also fell short of expectations, grossing around $240 million worldwide against a reported budget of $90 million. Three years later, however, Bullet Train is charging up the streaming charts.

It turns out the worst-reviewed movie of Robert Downey Jr.’s career isn’t done making headlines — it’s making a comeback. Five years after Dolittle limped out of theaters with brutal reviews and a box office that barely covered its colossal budget, the ill-fated adventure has found new life on Netflix. The same film that once symbolized post-Iron Manmisfires for Downey is now sitting at #9 worldwide on the streamer, pulling in millions of curious viewers and proving that in the era of algorithms, no flop ever truly stays buried. Or maybe people just want to hurt themselves emotionally by subjecting themselves to it? Who knows?
It's movies like this that make his return to Marvel all the more unsurprising. Sure, he just won an Oscar for his performance in Oppenheimer, but that film’s billion-dollar success was powered by Christopher Nolan’s brand name, an A-list ensemble, and a...

Only a few years before he debuted as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and eventually became the highest-grossing movie star in global box office history, Samuel L. Jacksonheadlined the inspirational sports drama Coach Carter. The movie was based on a true story, and was a modest hit at the box office upon its release in 2005, grossing over $75 million worldwide. Coach Carter is also notable for being Channing Tatum's debut film. The movie has since become something of a home video favorite, a reputation that it lived up to recently, when it debuted on Netflix.
Coach Carter was the sixth-most-watched film on Netflix's worldwide charts on August 8, jumping three spots from August 7. It beat out the likes of Gladiator II, The Gambler, Storks, and An Honest Life, which brought up the second half of the list. If you think about it, Robert Downey Jr.'s decision to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes all the sense in the world. He won an Oscar for his performance in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, but the film's box office success can be attributed to several factors. Downey's non-Marvel films in the last couple of decades have been largely hit-or-miss. The two movies that worked beyond a doubt — Sherlock Holmes and its sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows — didn't result in a third installment. The Judge and The Soloist underperformed, while Due Date was only a moderate hit. Downey's biggest flop, however, was the would-be franchise-starter Dolittle. The movie is now witnessing a resurgence on Netflix, where it debuted a few days ago.

Robert Downey Jr.’s first non-mcu movie after Avengers: Endgame stumbled right out of the gate when it released in 2020, but it only took 5 years for the tables to turn on Dolittle as it now storms the Netflix global streaming charts (FlixPatrol).
The fantasy adventure film has all the looks and feels of a Disney movie, along with a who’s who cast of Hollywood veterans that could make one’s head swoon. But in contrast to what a big-budget, commercial, and family-friendly film like Dolittle can achieve, the film failed both critically as well as at the box office.
As Downey’s first non-mcu movie after Avengers: Endgame, it is slightly disconcerting to see Dolittle rank 4th on Netflix’s Top 10 Movies, as of August 6, 2025.

Before John Cena returns to the Dcu as Peacemaker this August, fans are tuning in to this action comedy that was not only poorly received by critics but was also a box office flop. Freelance was first released in 2023, and since its recent streaming release, it has found a second chance at success on Netflix, proving that not all films need the theatrical treatment to find success.
According to FlixPatrol, Freelance sat at #3 on Netflix's Top 10 Movies in the United States on August 3, 2023, sitting betweenMy Oxford Year and Kpop Demon Hunters. This feature follows Cena's character, Mason Pettits, a former special forces operative who lands a job that he hates. Things change when he's offered a high-paying private security job for journalist, Claire Wellington (Alison Brie) who's traveling to the fictional South American country of Paldonia to interview its president, Juan Venegas (Juan Pablo Raba). Since its release, Freelance has been a box office flop.

Before Robert Downey Jr returns to the MCU as Doctor Doom, he played a veterinarian who could speak to animals in this 2020 feature. Dolittle was Downey Jr's first project following the end of his MCU tenure in Avengers: Endgame. While this feature received a low 15% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, it was well-liked by fans to the point that it has surged in streaming, just a year before we see the actor once more in Avengers: Doomsday.
According to FlixPatrol, Dolittle sits at #8 on Netflix's Top 10 Movies on August 2, 2025, worldwide, sandwiched between The Northman and Rampage. Since wrapping up his legendary run in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Robert Downey Jr. has faced high expectations for his future roles. The actor has become one of the most famous in Hollywood over the years, following Downey Jr.’s near-perfect casting as Iron Man back in 2008. However, he eventually departed from the MCU with Avengers: Endgame.
The actor has now returned to the Marvel franchise in a different role; he will play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. But in 2019, he had a lot of pressure to live up to his previous blockbuster role. Unfortunately, Downey Jr.’s two post-Endgame movies were a mixed bag, showcasing the best and worst of his career.

Here’s the thing – nobody thought Dolittle would be back in the conversation, let alone climbing Netflix’s Top 10 five years after its release. The 2020 fantasy-adventure, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Holland, bombed at the box office and became a punchline for what can go wrong in Hollywood. But streaming has a mind of its own.
As of this week, the movie is currently sitting at number 10 on the global Netflix charts, according to FlixPatrol, and a new generation of viewers seems curious about the movie that once derailed an A-lister’s momentum. It’s a second life nobody saw coming, and it’s shining a light on how Netflix keeps surprising the industry.

The Pickup stars Eddie Murphy and another former Saturday Night Live cast member as wisecracking “mismatched armored truck drivers” who are attacked by a gang of “ruthless criminals” and forced to rob a casino. And apparently, it’s coming out this year, and not in, like, 1997.

The Naked Gun Official Trailer Is The Single Most Important Trailer Of The Year (And Maybe All-Time)
To kickstart their very Mission: Impossible focused CinemaCon presentation, Paramount first debuted the official trailer for their upcoming action-comedy The Naked Gun, a movie they are cheekily describing as "The single most important Naked Gun movie since the other Naked Gun movies."

We also learn that he's playing Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen's Lt. Frank Drebin, who the film will honor and it seems like they'll do it in typical Naked Gun fashion.

There was a time when Activision decided to bring in a popular Hollywood writer to write a Call of Duty game and the result was 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts, an underrated gem of the Call of Duty franchise. Not many will agree with that statement. However, every fan will agree that the game featured some innovative ideas that were ahead of their time. In fact, many elements of modern Call of Duty games originated from that game.

It was the end of an era, especially for those who have been loving the badass Avenger since her first appearance in Iron Man 2. Even though Scarlett Johansson “returned” to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Black Widow, it was melancholic for her fans to watch knowing that the film was set before the events of Avengers: Endgame.

Scarlett Johansson sure played the hell out of Natasha all these years, so much so that it is impossible for us to imagine another actress in her shoes. However, her career outside of the MCU is equally impressive, if not more. Her upcoming Wes Anderson project proves that the actress has juicy roles all lined up and ready to go!

Was Matt Damon depressed due to the failure of a movie he worked hard on? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
On Jake’s Takes, Matt Damon opened up about the struggles of powering through a production when you already know things aren’t going as planned. “Sometimes you find yourself in a movie that you know, perhaps, might not be what you had hoped it would be,” Damon admitted. “And I remember halfway through production, knowing I still had months to go.”
He recalled the emotional toll it took on him and his family, sharing that his wife, Luciana Barroso, had to pull him out of his slump. “I remember my wife pulling me up because I fell into a depression about like, what have I done?” he said. Despite the uncertainty, Damon pushed through, embracing the professional mindset: giving everything on set, no matter the outcome. He credited Barroso with reminding...

"At that point I was bulletproof. I was the guru of all genre movies." Those are the words of Robert Downey Jr. in 2023 as "Oppenheimer" was making its way to theaters. That film went on to win "Best Picture" and made nearly $1 billion worldwide. It also won Rdj an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The point in time he was talking about? Around 2017 when he was cast in a film called "The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle," later shortened to just "Dolittle."
The resounding success of "Oppenheimer" cemented Downey as an unquestioned A-lister, even outside of the confines of "Iron Man" in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His turn as Tony Stark for more than a decade revived his career beyond even wildest expectations.

Robert Downey Jr.’s rise to fame is the ultimate Hollywood glow-up. In his early career, of course, he was the charming, talented actor in films like Less Than Zero and Chaplin, but his personal life was a bit of a mess. His struggles with addiction and legal issues kept him in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, and his paycheck didn’t match his potential.
Yes, he wasn’t exactly swimming in cash before Iron Man, making decent money but nothing that screamed “superstar.”

Then came Iron Man in 2008, and that’s when everything changed. Downey Jr. didn’t just play Tony Stark, he literally became Tony Stark. His snarky, charismatic performance turned him into a box-office magnet, and suddenly, he was Hollywood’s golden boy. The salary that once barely scraped the surface? Gone.

Tom Holland is a huge name in the industry right now. Though he has been acting since he was a child, he has shot up in fame since making his debut as everyone's favorite webslinger in Spider-Man: Homecoming back in 2017. Since then, the MCU has become the pinnacle of Holland's career. Three of these movies have made it into the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time at the worldwide box office, including Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Despite his success in the MCU, Holland's other films have often struggled to gain significant traction. His YA adaptation series attempt with Chaos Walking, for example, was a massive flop and did not get a sequel. He also teamed up with Avengers co-star Robert Downey Jr. in the 2020 film Dolittle, which underperformed at the box office, making $251.4 million on an estimated $175 million budget. For movie goers, it's an inevitable fate that there will always be movies like Joker: Folie á Deux and Dolittle that initially appear to be worth seeing only to disappoint or fail miserably to meet audiences expectations. Even though its obvious that there will always be bad movies, there are some recent titles like Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and The Emoji Movie that seem like a fever dream coming to furition on the big screen.

Stephen Gaghan's 2020 film "Dolittle," based on Hugh Lofting's "Doctor Dolittle" novels published in the 1920s and 1930s, was notable in that it was Robert Downey Jr.'s first major acting job in five years that wasn't part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Downey's five previous credits were for Avengers movies, wherein he played the inimitable Iron Man. The MCU, as well as Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" movies, made Downey a wealthy worldwide superstar and a widely recognized household name. His 2010s fame, however, didn't seem to lead to other notable acting gigs. In 2009, Downey appeared in "The Soloist," and 2010 saw the release of the road comedy "Due Date," but neither of those were huge smashes. Downey starred in and produced "The Judge" in 2014, but that film attracted more attention for his co-star Robert Duvall than for his own performance.
In 2020, when "Dolittle" was released, it seemed to many that Downey was adrift.

Not many billionaires are like Elon Musk, except maybe Tony Stark/Iron Man, but then he’s fictional. The multi-billionaire has often drawn comparisons with the popular Marvel character for a long time and has even attempted to cosplay him in real life a few times. Fyi, he even had a brief cameo on ‘Iron Man 2.’
Now the man who played the iconic Iron Man character has some few words for him that anyone can easily interpret as “grow up.”
Robert Downey Jr. Expresses Disappointment Over Elon Musk’s Behavior
Maybe this isn’t even a political thing – Elon Musk has made it clear he’s mightily team Republican – but Robert Downey Jr. isn’t amused by Musk’s eccentric billionaire behavior anymore.
These days, any little time you find Musk not being political or trying to be funny, you’ll find him promoting his ultra-futuristic brands Tesla and SpaceX.

Fantasy movies of the 1960s are a time capsule of an age of imagination that has gone on to inspire some of the best fantasy movies and performances of all time. While these films blend a variety of genres and story types, many of the most prominent fantasy movies of the decade were produced by Walt Disney Studios. Both animated and live-action films garnered great success for Disney during the '60s, but this family-friendly fare isn't all the decade has to offer. Darker and more adult fantasy films drew older audiences to theaters and are great projects to rewatch today.
One of the reasons it's so fun to look back on works of speculative fiction from the 1960s is because the filmmakers had to be so creative with the use of visual effects. These projects use miniatures and beautifully constructed practical sets and make early forays into the use of animation in live-action projects.

Tom Holland is set to return as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the coming years, but his new role in Christopher Nolan's next movie is even more exciting. Since breaking out with the life-changing superhero casting and his debut as Peter Parker in 2016, Holland's career has primarily been defined by playing the web-slinger. This is set to continue with him returning for Spider-Man 4 with Marvel Studios and Sony. While that film and his expected appearances in the two upcoming Avengers movies are highly anticipated, news that Holland will star in Christopher Nolan's new film is massive.

Robert Downey Jr. is one of the biggest stars of our generation, one of the greatest actors of all time, given one of the greatest superhero portrayals, and is now slated to play one of the greatest superhero villains in Marvel comics. Nearly ten years after director George Miller returned to the post-apocalyptic wasteland and redefined the action genre with Mad Max: Fury Road, the Australian auteur returned to replace Charlize Theron with Anya Taylor Joy to tell the origin story of the warrior who helped Mad Max cross that fury road in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. And regardless of how underwhelming its box office may be, this high octane prequel will surely stand the test of time alongside the rest of the Mad Max saga, certainly more so than another follow-up from Warner Bros. to a car racing franchise way back in 1984, when the late great Burt Reynolds bid farewell to the formula comedy genre that made him a superstar alongside an all-star cast (Jackie Chan! Sherlock Holmes is the only non-mcu franchise Rdj starred in, with two successful entries. The delay in Sherlock Holmes 3 is due to Rdj's busy schedule with the MCU. Rdj's performance as Holmes was praised, adding charm to the character and his chemistry with Jude Law.
For an actor as prolific as Robert Downey Jr., he has only appeared in one franchise outside the MCU, which has yet to release its third entry, Sherlock Holmes. In 2009, Rdj had just starred in the 2008 mega-hit, Iron Man, which launched the world's largest and most profitable franchise to date, the MCU. However, this period was also early in Rdj's climb back to the top after having a tough number of years in Hollywood where he struggled with addiction and legal troubles.
The actor was always incredibly talented, and considering his career began when he was a child, he had already appeared in numerous projects.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is full of witty one-liners and classic banter from our favorite heroes. Still, there’s one small detail about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man that the audience might have missed in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.

It’s hard to think of an actor managing his career after leaving a franchise better than has Robert Downey Jr. And that makes his announced return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe — in which he’ll be playing the villainous character Dr. Doom in forthcoming “Avengers” sequels, as announced this weekend — come as a surprise.
Downey’s “Iron Man” kicked off of the MCU in 2008, and his character Tony Stark’s death, in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” was a climax of sorts. “Endgame” represented a culmination of all Marvel storytelling to that point: Downey’s definitive departure meant that this particular set of stories, in which wisecracking defense contractor sat at the emotional center, was done.
What immediately followed his departure was a major hiccup, with his film “Dolittle” bombing critically and commercially in early 2020. It was an attempted franchise-starter, and a cynical one: Downey has said since that he was...

Robert Downey Jr.’s career has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. The Oppenheimer star has seen it all – the highs and the lows. From his early rise to fame, that was stunted by a crippling drug addiction and was at once threatened to stunt his career as well. But he bounced back in style. Since then, there has been no turning back for him. And he’s played numerous interesting roles. But on the top of his list would be a series which saw him take on the mantle of playing 4 roles.

It’s not news that Robert Downey Jr.’s iconic character Tony Stark is widely considered one of the most powerful and, well, egoistic characters in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While his extraordinary smarts are what set him apart from every other superhero, the lifestyle he leads and the personality he sports — especially at the beginning of his tenure — further contributed to it.

However, while he manages to turn into a softie in the later events of his story arc in the Cinematic Universe, especially around Peter Parker aka Spider-Man, he does set his ego aside for one other Marvel character as well.
In fact, not only this but on closer observation, one would realize that he actually even breaks his rule for this very character too: Howard Stark, i.e. Tony’s dad.

Despite delays, Susan Downey assures fans that Sherlock Holmes 3 is still alive in their hearts, and they're working on the right approach. Robert Downey Jr.'s recent Oscar win and exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe make now the perfect time for his return as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic private detective. In addition to the third movie, Downey Jr. is said to be working with Max to develop two in-universe Sherlock Holmes spinoff shows.
While Prime Video forges ahead with their own take on the classic character, Susan Downey offers an encouraging update for Robert Downey Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes 3. The Oscar winner first brought his take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic private detective to life with the 2009 movie, for which he won the Golden Globe for Best Actor. The movie's success led to a sequel in 2011, which similarly proved a commercial hit, though...

Of all the titles credited to Robert Downey Jr.’s name to date, perhaps the one that perfectly aligns with his real-life personality is that of Tony Stark in his Iron Man saga. But while that is still regarded as one of his best performances to date despite him last playing it almost half a decade ago, his iconic portrayal of the fan-favorite character wouldn’t have been possible due to one movie.

This one movie was none other than his 2005 masterpiece Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which pretty much brought his career back on track. But his success through the film wasn’t the only thing that made Downey Jr.’s superhero debut possible, because what seems to have further added to his star-studded portrayal of Stark must have been the genius performance by Val Kilmer in the 2005 film!
