In the early 2000s, at the same time directors like Eli Roth and Rob Zombie were pushing the limits of violence in American cinema with “Cabin Fever” and “The Devil’s Rejects,” a parallel movement emerged in France. Dubbed cinema du corps or “New French Extremity,” the trend was characterized by extremely confrontational horror films that assaulted the audience with their combination of filmmaking skill and visceral gore.
Many of these movies no longer feel quite so shocking, their tropes now absorbed into mainstream horror. Marina de Van’s “In My Skin,” however, retains its power to disturb 23 years after its release. The story of a young woman (played by de Van herself) whose addiction to self-mutilation escalates in increasingly graphic body horror set pieces, “In My Skin” remains profoundly unsettling because there’s no barrier between the audience and the filmmaker’s subconscious — de Van invites us into her darkest...

When you think of horror streaming platforms, the usual suspects come to mind: massive corporations curating predictable content. Nyx TV, however, is anything but typical. Founded in 2022 and spearheaded by Corinne Ferguson, Nyx Media Corporation has carved a unique niche in the entertainment landscape. First launched in the UK and later expanding to Canada, the platform offers expertly curated horror content that speaks to both die-hard fans and newcomers. But Nyx isn’t just about programming—it’s a labour of love, passion, and inclusivity.

Haunt is a 2019 release that explores the darkest side of extreme haunted attractions here is the Haunt ending explained. The film follows a group of friends on Halloween night looking to attend something unique. They find a flier for an "extreme" haunted attraction and go together. Harper is going through relationship problems with an abusive boyfriend and has endured a traumatic past due to her parents' marital struggles, where abuse is also implied. She reluctantly attends, under pressure that this sort of event will take her mind away from the situation with her boyfriend.
In one of the best haunted attraction movies, they all are forced to sign a waiver. It is explicit in saying that they may undergo extreme situations and incur bodily harm. However, even though this is meant to be a red flag, the majority are skeptical of how dangerous this situation might be and decide it's part of the act.

Are you shocked to learn the author of /Film's three Halloween Horror Nights articles this year is a haunted attraction addict? Invite me to your Halloween mazes, hayrides, docked ocean liners, and Shaqtoberfests. I crave haunt season entertainment. Even better, I crave "Haunt Season Horror" movies. Is that trademarked? Can I coin that terminology?
Haunt Season Horror titles must take place in a Horror Nights-like maze or immersive experience, turning seasonal amusements into slaughterhouse backdrops. Marquee examples would be "Hell Fest," your corporate-branded Six Flags Fright Fest take, or "The Houses October Built," which ventures into the less moderated realm of do-it-yourself haunts. These films prey upon the rational fears of patrons who attend these pop-up "Scarehouses," stripping away the safety of regulated horror experiences. What happens when a killer infiltrates a place where commercial terror is purchased at a premium? It's the ultimate Halloween treat.

Malum is, according to its press release “a bold and expanded reimagining of the 2014 horror cult classic, Last Shift”. Now some may simply take that as a fancy way of saying it’s a remake of a film that’s less than ten years old. But there’s a difference between this and your average remake, it’s the work of the original director Anthony Diblasi and his co-writer Scott Poiley.
I considered revisiting Last Shift before watching Malum because while I remembered the basic plot and that I really liked the first hour then being let down by the final act, I didn’t recall a lot of the details. But, in part due to how knowing what to expect spoiled the impact of another recent reimagining,...

We’re here about a mattress…
After wrapping up 2023 with look at New French Extremity in Inside (listen), horror musicals in Anna and the Apocalypse (listen) and the Best Horror Films of 2023 (listen), we’re kicking off our first official episode of 2024 with a lengthy discussion of Tony Randel‘s better-than-it-has-any-right-to-be sequel Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988), which just celebrated its 35th anniversary!
Hellbound: Hellraiser II picks up hours after the first film ended, seeing Kirsty Cotton (Ashley Laurence) confined to a mental hospital after she tells the authorities that her father was betrayed by his evil, adulterous wife, Julia (Clare Higgins), and is now being tormented in hell by sadomasochistic demons called Cenobites. Few believe Kirsty, except the thrill-seeking Dr. Channard (Kenneth Cranham), who is so intrigued by her frightening stories that he teams up with a newly resurrected Julia. This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies. Some selections reflect a specific day or event in August, and others were chosen at random.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings feature folk horror, killer animals, and more.
Dark August (1976)
Directed by Martin Goldman.
With August 22 being World Folklore Day, horror fans don’t ever have to look too far to find mysticism and superstitions. Right in their backyards are plenty of homegrown horrors that showcase the extraordinary. Martin Goldman’s Vermont-shot regional horror Dark August centers on the man who accidentally runs over and kills a little girl. While J.J. "Your daddy started something very important..." Welcome Villain has unveiled the official trailer for an indie horror film titled Malum, arriving in theaters only at the end of March. This is actually a new remake of the 2014 horror film Last Shift, made by the same filmmaker updating his own film, similar to the way Sam Raimi made Evil Dead 1 & 2. Helmed by director Anthony Diblasi and co-written by Diblasi and Scott Poiley, Malum re-imagines the original critically-acclaimed horror hit from the festival circuit and expands on the filmmaker's vision of nightmare-inducing terror. A rookie police officer willingly takes the last shift at a newly decommissioned police station in an attempt to uncover the mysterious connection between her police officer father's death and a vicious cult. This updated film stars Jessica Sula as Jessica Loren, with Kevin Wayne, Monroe Cline, Candice Coke, Valerie Loo, Clarke Wolfe, Natalie Victoria. This does look pretty freaky.

Now that October is officially underway, that means we have a big week of Blu-ray and DVD releases to get excited for, and there are some great genre-related titles coming out on Tuesday. Universal Studios Home Entertainment is unleashing both Tales from the Hood 2 and The First Purge on multiple formats, and for fans of action cinema, Death Race: Beyond Anarchy races home this week, too. Kino Lorber is giving both The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler the limited edition treatment, and for those who enjoy indie horror, Feral, Housewife, and Blood Fest are certainly all worth your time.
Other notable releases for October 2nd include Extremity, Molly, The Legend of Halloween Jack, The Evil Dead in 4K, Sleep No More, and West of Hell, with Rob Zombie’s Halloween getting a Steelbook release as well.

Extremity is an upcoming horror film. From the disturbed minds of writers David Bond (Boogeyman: Reincarnation) and Scott Swan, the film was directed by Anthony Diblasi. In the film, a young woman goes on a psychological journey, in order to relieve herself of an earlier drama. Extremity will be released by Dread Central Presents, in early October. A trailer for Extremity was released this past month (found below). Now, the film's special features and other release details are available. Extremity features a well renowned cast. Sports Illustrated model Ashley Smith stars as Nell, one of the many masked villains. Long-time horror veteran J. Larose (Insidious) also stars, along with Ami Tomite (Meatball Machine) and Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police). This cast bring great performances to an uber-violent feature as seen in the film's official trailer. The release date for Extremity is scheduled for October 2nd. On this date, this indie horror feature will show.

"A mind is a terrible thing to break." Dread Central Presents has released the official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Extremity, the latest feature from director Anthony Diblasi. Extremity plays with the popular modern horror concept of "extreme haunts", or experiences horror fans can pay for that put them in horrific, torturous situations. The plot follows a young woman obsessed with horror who subjects herself to hours of grueling torment inside an extreme haunt in an attempt to confront her fears and conquer the tragic past that haunts her. Starring Dana Christina, J. Larose, Cam Damage, September D'Angelo, Felissa Rose, Tiffany Shepis, Chad Rook, Michael St. Michaels, Natalie Victoria, and Ricky Dean Logan. I wasn't even sure if I should post this, but it just looks so crazy with some seriously freaky imagery, I couldn't help it. You hve to see all this for yourself. Here's the first...

Friday's Comic-Con schedule is packed with panels and events for horror fans, but Saturday's schedule is looking good as well with panels for TV shows like Stan Against Evil and The Purge. As for me, the highlight is going to be the Warner Brothers Theatrical panel, where we're expecting to get the first look at Michael Dougherty's Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Happy Birthday, Frankenstein
This upcoming Halloween, there will be an international celebration of the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. And with that comes a plethora of books and movies rejoicing this occasion. At this panel, listen to authors talk about the influence that Mary Shelley's writing had on their works and why people still obsess over Frankenstein. And watch as they talk about the monsters that never die in their own novels.
