As we speak, James Gunn and Peter Safran are working to shepherd the DC Comics universe on film. We'll have a better sense of how this new franchise might play out (and whether it's here for the long haul) after "Superman" -- personally directed by Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Superman -- soars into theaters on July 11, 2025.

While DC Films is preparing to introduce a new silver screen Superman, DC Comics is doing the same. This fall, DC is launching a new "Absolute" publishing line. This is, in a nutshell, a reboot for the shared setting of DC Comics (though it will run alongside the original instead of replacing it). Familiar characters will start from the beginning and might turn out very differently than they have before.

Comic writers Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson are the architects of "Absolute DC." On July 18, 2024, Snyder shared background on the project in his "Our Best Jackett" newsletter.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles began their lives in comic book form 40 years ago before going on to become a media and merchandizing brand and are currently enjoying a massive revival in the sequential art format. In fact, the top selling graphic novel in North America for two years in a row has been Tmnt: The Last Ronin, the collected trade paperback of the acclaimed mini-series from the early 2020s.

Idw, the company which holds the Tmnt license, is capitalizing on the half-shell heat but launching a new ongoing series, one that will return the series to its gritty and action-packed roots seen in the original black and white indie comics from creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.

After her Oscar-nominated role in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, actress Lily Gladstone is now starring in the true crime drama Under the Bridge. Based on Rebecca Godfrey’s book of the same name, the series follows the tragic real-life story of Reena Virk, a 14-year-old girl murdered by teenagers in Canada in 1997.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #150 is the end of the current series, but fans can look forward to a relaunch with a new creative team. Writer Sophie Campbell is stepping down, but the series will continue in Idw's existing canon. The big news is that Jason Aaron, known for his work on Avengers and Thor, will be the writer for the new Tmnt era.

Fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were shocked to learn that Idw's current Tmnt series will end with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #150, however they can rest easy in the just-announced knowledge that this will be followed by a relaunch of the series with a major new creative team. When the first round of glowing reviews for “Reservation Dogs” arrived last summer, the surprise hit was praised for its authenticity, humor, and poignancy. And there wasn’t a critic who failed to single out the cast of young new faces and first-time Indigenous performers anchoring the show.

“There’s a myth that there are no Native actors,” said series creator Sterlin Harjo. It’s a catch-22 Harjo is all too familiar with: There are not a lot of Indigenous actors in Hollywood, because there’s not a lot of work for them there. “It’s like a Western comes out once every however many years, you know? And it’s not that fun to play the same parts over and over and over.”

Keep in mind I have yet to read these books so this is based solely on expectations. Sometimes expectations can get the best of us so I try to even it out by also pointing out what could also go wrong.

DC Comics is finally coming to ComiXology's Unlimited subscription service. This may now be the best deal in comics!

DC Comics is unleashing its superhero universe (as well as its Vertigo line) on ComiXology's Unlimited all-you-can-read subscription service, according to io9. Starting today, readers can access select graphic novels and single issues starring DC's most iconic characters, including Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. The service, which already includes books from Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, Valiant, Archie, and many other publishers, will set you back $6 a month.

This new acquisition from ComiXology comes at a time when DC is finally entering the digital subscription space with its own DC Universe service, which charges $7.99 a month for access to a selection from DC's comic book archive as well as a library of movies, TV shows, and animated series.
