As we speak, James Gunn and Peter Safran are working to shepherd the DC Comics universe on film. We'll have a better sense of how this new franchise might play out (and whether it's here for the long haul) after "Superman" -- personally directed by Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Superman -- soars into theaters on July 11, 2025.
While DC Films is preparing to introduce a new silver screen Superman, DC Comics is doing the same. This fall, DC is launching a new "Absolute" publishing line. This is, in a nutshell, a reboot for the shared setting of DC Comics (though it will run alongside the original instead of replacing it). Familiar characters will start from the beginning and might turn out very differently than they have before.
Comic writers Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson are the architects of "Absolute DC." On July 18, 2024, Snyder shared background on the project in his "Our Best Jackett" newsletter.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles began their lives in comic book form 40 years ago before going on to become a media and merchandizing brand and are currently enjoying a massive revival in the sequential art format. In fact, the top selling graphic novel in North America for two years in a row has been Tmnt: The Last Ronin, the collected trade paperback of the acclaimed mini-series from the early 2020s.
Idw, the company which holds the Tmnt license, is capitalizing on the half-shell heat but launching a new ongoing series, one that will return the series to its gritty and action-packed roots seen in the original black and white indie comics from creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.
Simply titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the new series is written by Jason Aaron, the comics author behind the gritty creator-owned crime series Scalped and his action-packed work on Marvel’s Wolverine and Thor: God of Thunder,...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #150 is the end of the current series, but fans can look forward to a relaunch with a new creative team. Writer Sophie Campbell is stepping down, but the series will continue in Idw's existing canon. The big news is that Jason Aaron, known for his work on Avengers and Thor, will be the writer for the new Tmnt era.
Fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were shocked to learn that Idw's current Tmnt series will end with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #150, however they can rest easy in the just-announced knowledge that this will be followed by a relaunch of the series with a major new creative team. After an acclaimed run, writer Sophie Campbell will be stepping down from the main series, however after The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Idw had renewed its license for the franchise, fans knew the Heroes in a Half-Shell would return in some form.

How challenging is it in this day and age to stand out in a crowded, chaotic marketplace of content and distraction, and is the worst fate for a series to be met with indifference? Despite all the progress we’ve seen over the years, what more can the industry do for black, indigenous, LGBTQ and other minority communities when it comes to diversity and inclusion on our TV screens? These were some of the topics discussed by five top TV showrunners and directors when they joined Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2023 /2024 awards contenders: Nkechi Okoro Carroll (“Found”), Peter Hoar (“The Last of Us”), Mimi Leder (“The Morning Show”), John Hoffman (“Only Murders in the Building”) and Sterlin Harjo (“Reservation Dogs”).

When the first round of glowing reviews for “Reservation Dogs” arrived last summer, the surprise hit was praised for its authenticity, humor, and poignancy. And there wasn’t a critic who failed to single out the cast of young new faces and first-time Indigenous performers anchoring the show.
“There’s a myth that there are no Native actors,” said series creator Sterlin Harjo. It’s a catch-22 Harjo is all too familiar with: There are not a lot of Indigenous actors in Hollywood, because there’s not a lot of work for them there. “It’s like a Western comes out once every however many years, you know? And it’s not that fun to play the same parts over and over and over.”
The search the show’s four young leads — all relative newcomers — might conjure up images of one of those needle-in-a-haystack epic casting stories that becomes Hollywood legend,...

Comixology Unlimited is the subscription streaming service provided by the Amazon-owned largest digital comics distributor in the world, and just in time for our long, national social distancing experiment, they’ve extended their free trial period to two months. Comixology Unlimited features books from every major publisher. It boasts over 25,000 total comics available to read for free, with original comics by major creators and manga you’ve never heard of (but some of it very good).
This move comes as comic shops across the country move to appointment only, mail order, and curbside pickup in response to state and local emergency declarations banning large gatherings to prevent the spread of Covid-19. For people stuck in a house for several weeks, this could be a godsend. Or they could accidentally keep reading X-Men collections after finishing Age of Apocalypse, and discover the Onslaught saga and ask for their money back on a free trial.

Welcome to another installment of Weekly Picks where I take a look at the comics I am most excited about for this upcoming New Comic Book Day. Keep in mind I have yet to read these books so this is based solely on expectations. Sometimes expectations can get the best of us so I try to even it out by also pointing out what could also go wrong.
American Carnage #8 Writer: Bryan Edward Hill | Artist: Leandro Fernandez | Publisher: Vertigo Comics
Solicitation: Bullets fly and blood flows when Richard’s plan to exfiltrate one of Jennifer’s childhood friends from the white nationalist narcotics business goes awry. Meanwhile, Sheila’s new FBI overlord makes his move as DC Vertigo’s acclaimed Los Angeles crime saga continues in this stunning issue.
Why I am Excited: If I was to pick the best comic of 2019 so far American Carnage would probably be the book I would choose.
