It made only $27 million in its debut weekend against a $130 million budget.

Will Smith took the heat in stride. Jaden Smith didn’t. “After Earth was an abysmal box office and critical failure,” Will wrote (via People). “And...

Image
Netflix’s newest Polish drama, “Boxer” (Boker), is a gritty, honest look at athletic desire set in communist Poland in the 1980s. The movie, directed by Mitja Okorn, is about a passionate boxer named Jedrzej who has dreams bigger than the harsh political situation he lives in.

The story takes place mostly in the mid-1980s and shows how Jedrzej changes from a small Polish town to the London fighting circuits. As a young player who his boxing father inspired, Jedrzej isn’t just fighting in the ring. He’s also fighting against unfair rules and lack of money. His wife Kasia becomes one of his most important supporters because she shares his dream of freedom and chance.

The story is a complicated look at what it’s like to be an immigrant in a world where talent alone doesn’t promise success. There are many obstacles in Jedrzej’s way,...

Why Jaden Smith’s Upbringing Makes Filming Emotional Scenes A Challenge
Image
Here’s why Jaden Smith struggled with emotional scenes (Photo Credit – Prime Video)

Jaden Smith’s well-known respect for his parents, Will and Jada Smith, almost got in the way of his performance in Life in a Year. The actor who plays Daryn—a young man grappling with big emotions and rebellious decisions—found certain emotional scenes surprisingly challenging to film. According to the film’s director, Mitja Okorn, Jaden struggled to resolve conflicts with his on-screen mother, mainly due to his deep respect for his real-life parents.

Life in a Year was produced by Smith’s company, Overbrook, which meant Will and Jada were often on set, keeping an eye on things. While Jaden would frequently discuss his scenes with his dad, getting input from one of Hollywood’s biggest stars wasn’t always smooth sailing. One particularly intense scene—the one where Jaden’s character, Daryn, stands up...

Image
Jaden Smith doesn’t mind dropping his last name? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Jaden Smith and Will Smith are probably Hollywood’s most excellent father-son duos. Although the two had their fair share of conflicts, their relationship has always felt vibrant. Jaden’s debut on-screen with Will in The Pursuit of Happyness showcased their special bond. Over the years, the two have worked on other creative projects, shared laughs, and sometimes even fashion statements.

While Will is known for being a supportive dad, Jaden isn’t afraid to do his own thing. As Jaden craves his own space in music and film, his presence in the industry is no less impressive. Despite growing up as Will’s son, he has always been under the spotlight, but there was a time when he took steps to make his own identity.

How Old Jaden Smith Was In After Earth
Image
How old was Jaden Smith when he starred in sci-fi adventure After Earth? After Earth was quietly impactful on many of its key creatives. It was M. Night Shyamalan's last attempt at making a big-budget blockbuster, and he later admitted that making films at that scale isn't what he's suited for. Star and producer Will Smith also stated the film's failure was the most "painful" (via Esquire) of his entire career, as his son Jaden bore the brunt of its poor reviews.

For Jaden Smith, it also proved to be his last lead role in a movie until 2020 drama Life in a Year, and he's largely stepped away from acting. Will Smith sci-fi movie After Earth actually started life as a much smaller project, with the actor planning to make a drama about a father and son who crash on a remote mountain; the son then has to seek help for his injured parent.

Image
Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer are ramping up their next acts at Netflix.

Ten days after announcing an animated series set within the Stranger Things universe, the Duffer brothers have scored a series order for The Boroughs, a sci-fi drama from The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance duo Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews.

“We’ve been fans of Jeff and Will’s writing for a long time, and when they pitched us their idea for The Boroughs,...

Image

Now, in a revealing cover interview with Vogue, the 30-year-old said she’s grateful for those images because it sent her on a path to rehab and sobriety.

“I hadn’t slept. I was not Ok,” she told Vogue writer Chioma Nnadi. “It’s heartbreaking because I thought I was having fun, but at some point it was like, Ok, I don’t look well. You know, sometimes you need a reality check, so in a way those pictures were something to be grateful for.”

For the interview, conducted in late January, Delevingne confessed that she was four months sober after a stint in rehab late last year. “I’ve had interventions of a sort, but I wasn’t ready.

Will Smith Says Press Was ‘Vicious’ to His Son Over ‘After Earth’ Failure: I Led Him Into ‘Public Mauling’
Image
It’s a great time to be Will Smith. The actor is a frontrunner to land an Oscar nomination for his performance in “King Richard,” opening in theaters and streaming on HBO Max beginning November 19, and he has a new memoir titled “Will” that’s generating a ton of buzz and is now available for purchase. One of the more candid moments of the memoir comes when Smith reveals that his son, Jaden, asked to be emancipated from his parents at 15 years old following the critical and box office failure of “After Earth.” The 2013 M. Night Shyamalan film was based on Will’s original idea and was anticipated for reuniting Will and Jaden on screen for the first time since “The Pursuit of Happyness,” which earned Will an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

“‘After Earth’ was an abysmal box office and critical failure,” Will writes in his memoir (via People...

"I know it's not always easy, but nothing ever is... That's why we make plans." Plans for... a whole life? An official trailer has arrived for Life in a Year, a new romance project from Jaden Smith (exec produced by Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith). The emotional drama is about a 17-year-old boy named Daryn, played by Jaden, who falls for a girl he meets at an ice cream shop. But when he learns that she is terminally ill, with only a year left to live, he sets out to give her an entire life in the last year she has. Cara Delevingne co-stars, with a cast including RZA, Nia Long, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Chris D'Elia. This looks sweet but extra campy, a bit overblown with its platitudes and grandiosity. Steve McQueen in La grande évasion (1963)
Amazon Prime Video New Releases: November 2020
Steve McQueen in La grande évasion (1963)
November can be a slow month for streaming services. Amazon, however, is entering into 2020’s penultimate month with some steam.

Amazon is really beefing up its TV library in November 2020. Both Community (which arrives on Nov. 8) and Scrubs (Nov. 14) will be added to Amazon Prime this month and in the process complete the streaming trifecta: Netflix, Amazon, Hulu. That’s pretty impressive stuff for both shows. And then on the film side of things, November 1 sees the arrival of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Twilight, and the Underworld franchise. Somebody didn’t tell Amazon Spooky Season was over and bless them for it.

As for the originals, Alex Rider is the most intriguing TV series here. That is based on the British spy novel series and premieres on Nov. 13 on IMDb TV (which is available to all Prime subscribers). That will be followed by Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series on Nov.

Image
“Charm City Kings” producer Caleeb Pinkett has teamed up with production company Rebel Maverick for a film based on Alyssa Keli Rose’s Medium article “The Dunbar Heist,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Pinkett, the brother of Jada Pinkett Smith, will produce the project with Clarence Hammond and Dougie Cash. Rebel Maverick’s Matt Nicholas and Nastassja Kayln will also be producing, with Jane Kim Yang overseeing for their company. Norman Towns (“Insecure”) brought in the project and will be executive producing.

Nicholas and Kayln are adapting the script with screenwriter Leon Langford.

The 1997 robbery took place at the Dunbar Armored facility in Los Angeles — five men stole $18.9 million in under 30 minutes. Allen Pace III, a fired employee of the Dunbar depot, was the mastermind who planned the robbery for two years and recruited four of his closest friends. After four years of thwarting law enforcement, the scheme fell apart after one of the robbers,...

Romantic Drama ‘Life in a Year’ Faces Uncertain Fate Amid Cuba Gooding Jr., Chris D’Elia Sexual Misconduct Claims
Image
The romantic drama Life in a Year seemed to have enough elements to draw a crowd at the box office: popular stars (Jaden Smith, Cara Delevingne), A-listers on the production team (Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment) and the premise of a young man pledging to give his dying girlfriend an entire life in the year she has left.

But the Mitja Okorn-directed film also has a big fly in the ointment: two supporting players — Cuba Gooding Jr. and Chris D’Elia — who have faced sexual misconduct allegations in recent weeks.

Chris D'Elia
What’s Next for Chris D’Elia’s Films After Sexual Misconduct Accusations
Chris D'Elia
Even though Chris D’Elia was dropped by CAA and Three Arts Management this week after multiple women accused him of predatory online behavior when they were minors, the actor and comedian still has three completed films in the pipeline. D’Elia next stars alongside Dave Bautista and Ella Purnell in Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead,” the already-wrapped follow-up to the auteur’s 2004 zombie remake “Dawn of the Dead.” Netflix, the film’s distributor, declined to comment on the film’s status — but it seems unlikely that the streamer would go back into production to recast D’Elia’s role. The comedian also has a supporting role in “Life in a Year,” a romantic drama starring Jaden Smith as a 17-year-old boy who learns his girlfriend is dying and plans to give her their entire life together in the year she has left. The film, which also stars Cara Delevingne,...

Suicide Squad Star Cara Delevingne Opens Up About Her Pansexuality
Image
Suicide Squad star Cara Delevingne has opened up about her pansexuality during a candid interview. Speaking to Variety for its Power of Pride issue, the model-turned-actress discussed everything from her LGBTQ+ identity to disgraced media mogul Harvey Weinstein’s reaction to her same-sex relationships.

Delevingne – whose other notable screen credits include the historical romantic drama Tulip Fever and Amazon Prime show Carnival Row – has previously described herself as ‘bisexual’ and later ‘sexually fluid,’ but in her latest interview, she firmly declared herself pansexual, meaning she’s attracted to people regardless of their gender.

“I feel different all the time. Some days, I feel more womanly. Some days, I feel more like a man. I always will remain, I think, pansexual. However one defines themselves, whether it’s ‘they’ or ‘he’ or ‘she,’ I fall in love with the person – and that’s that. I’m attracted to the person.”

Jaden Smith Claims Canadian Hotel ''Spiked'' His Pancakes With Cheese and Kicked Him Out
Jaden Smith
Not everyone has the time of their lives when staying in the lap of luxury... Jaden Smith took to Twitter earlier on Saturday to let the world know he had a pretty bad time after staying at the Four Seasons Hotel Toronto in Canada. How bad was it? He said a meal there made him want to "throw up" on himself. So...not good, or so it seems. The 18-year-old actor, who is currently in Toronto filming Life In A Year, posted a series of somewhat cryptic tweets, in which he seemed rather perturbed by his hotel experience. The series of tweets began with: "The Four Seasons In Toronto just made me want to throw up on myself." Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith's son then went on to...

“The Four Seasons In Toronto Just Made Me Want to Throw Up On MySelf,” he first wrote to his six million followers on Saturday.

The fashion boundary-pusher continued, “I Hope The Four Seasons In Toronto Puts Me On The No Stay List.”
