Gladiator II is expected to do well at the box office upon its release, and Ridley Scott will break a seven-year-old record if it makes over $568 million. Although it's been over 20 years since the original Gladiator came out, interest in seeing the sequel has never died down. Gladiator 2 is one of the most anticipated movies of 2024 due to Ridley Scott's return to the Roman setting, its action-packed trailers, and the star-studded cast including Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Paul Mescal. All those factors make the movie's box office prospects promising.

How Gladiator 2 does at the box office will be quite important for Ridley Scott in particular. The director's movies have faltered at the box office in the years since The Martian gave him a new highest-grossing movie. Gladiator previously held that record after making $451 million (via The Numbers), and there is at least some hope that the sequel could outperform the original.

What is the most terrifying alien film? That should be an easy question to answer, right? Of course, there are some iconic ones. Will anything ever beat Ridley Scott's iconic Alien, where we first see the creature burst out of John Hurt's chest in a geyser of blood? Who could forget the first time they saw M. August’s home entertainment releases are off and running in a big way with this week’s crop of horror and sci-fi titles, as we have nearly two dozen movies coming our way this Tuesday.

Scream Factory is putting in overtime with a handful of stunning steelbooks celebrating three great John Carpenter films—They Live, The Fog and Escape From New York—as well as a Collector’s Edition of James Gunn’s Slither and the indie horror films Don’t Knock Twice and House on Willow Street (which they’ve teamed up with IFC Midnight for).

As far as recent genre movies go, Colossal, Shin Godzilla, and Phoenix Forgotten are all primed for their home bow on August 1st, and both Paramount and Universal are dusting off a bunch of recent titles on both DVD and Blu-ray, including Disturbia, The Machinist, Red Eye, and the unrated version of The Ruins.

If you are at all into UFO lore, you are familiar with the famed Phoenix Lights incident, which took place in 1997. Thousands of people witnessed the bizarre light formation over the city, with many people reporting it over the course of that night. It turns out that Kurt Russell, yes the movie star Kurt Russell, was one of the first people to report the Phoenix Lights to authorities at the time.

During a recent BBC Interview while promoting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the actor revealed, quite casually, that he was apparently the pilot that reported the Phoenix Lights. Much to the surprise of nobody, last weekend’s The Fate of the Furious had little problem taking first place this weekend. This weekend saw the release of four films — Born in China, Unforgettable, Phoenix Forgotten, and Free Fire. As our own Weekend Warrior predicted last week, they none of them stood much chance against arctic submarine chases. All of the films — with the exception of Born in China — underperformed substantially, clearing the way for the usual suspects taking the lead once again.

Fate of the Furious took in $38.7 million. While it still managed to retain first place with little trouble, it dropped a hefty 60.8% in its second weekend, which is not an insubstantial drop. Given its big blockbuster nature, however, it wasn’t exactly unexpected. Plus, given that the film is already creeping on $1 billion worldwide, there is no mistaking this is a huge success for the long-running franchise.

After setting a worldwide box office record, Universal's blockbuster The Fate of the Furious was expected to suffer a rather big second weekend drop, but still come out on top. Both predictions did in fact come true, with this high-octane blockbuster dropping a whopping 60.8%. But it still came out on top with an estimated $38.6 million. While there were five new movies arriving in theaters, two didn't even crack the top 10, and the rest barely managed to underperform.

Box Office Mojo reports that Fate of the Furious even added 19 theaters this weekend for a total theater count of 4,329, earning a decent $8,936 per-screen average. This weekend's tally brings its total up to $163.5 million domestic and a whopping $744.8 million international for a worldwide tally of $908.3 million. It's possible that it could break Star Wars: The Force Awakens' record of the fastest movie to reach $1 billion, with the Disney blockbuster taking just 12 days to accomplish that feat.

The top of this weekend's box office looks a lot like last weekend as the top three films remain the same, once again headlined by The Fate of the Furious as it closes in on $1 billion worldwide. As for the weekend's new releases, Disney's Born in China topped the list with the best start for a Disneynature title since the $10.6 million opening for 2012's Chimpanzee. Otherwise, WB's Unforgettable, Open Road's The Promise, Cinelou's Phoenix Forgotten and A24's Free Fire all under-performed. At #1 for a second weekend in a row is Universal's The Fate of the Furious, which performed mostly as expected, dropping 61% in its second weekend and bringing in an estimated $38.6 million as its domestic cume now climbs to $163.6 million. Internationally, the film continued its impressive overseas run bringing in an estimated $163.4 million from 65 territories as its overseas total balloons to $744.8 million for a global cume that stands at $908.4 million.

It may not be wholly revolutionary in both its approach and the material it explores, but Phoenix Forgotten was a lot more fun than a lot of folks might give it credit for, and it completely took me back to my high school days of being obsessed with The X-Files, science fiction, and the question of whether or not we are truly alone in this universe. Phoenix Forgotten does an admirable job of blending fact and fiction, and while there was one plot point that I felt was a little “too convenient,” overall, co-writer/director Justin Barber crafts an intriguing sci-fi-fueled mystery that hooked me from the very beginning. It may not make my list of favorite movies from this year, but Phoenix Forgotten was still an entertaining time nonetheless.

It appears to have taken a surprising commitment of talent to turn out the blandly generic Phoenix Forgotten, another disappointingly derivative imitation of The Blair Witch Project, this time mashed up with the X-Files franchise. It’s unlikely that even Mulder and Scully could successfully reanimate Justin Barber’s feature debut, however, which is likely to pique only passing sci-fi fanboy interest before joining the growing heap of pointlessly unoriginal found-footage castoffs.

Arriving in theaters this weekend is Phoenix Forgotten, a docu-style sci-fi film co-written and directed by Justin Barber. The film is centered around the Phoenix Lights phenomenon, a weird occurrence that happened back in 1997 which has yet to be explained over 20 years later. Barber’s project interjects a little fiction into the mix, as Phoenix Forgotten is focused on three missing teens who went out searching for the truth behind the mysterious lights that appeared, only to never be heard from again.

Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Barber, and after we finished geeking out over ’90s sci-fi, we chatted about his experiences working on the project with both his co-writer T.S. Nowlin and his cast (Luke Spencer Roberts, Chelsea Lopez, and Justin Matthews), how his career thus far has prepared him for his very first time helming a narrative feature, and more. On Thursday, March 13, 1997 a strange event occurred in the nighttime skies of Phoenix, Arizona. According to thousands of eyewitnesses, a triangular formation of lights were seen in the sky. Some reported seeing stationary lights hovering over Phoenix, which was later identified by the Air Force as flares being dropped from an air craft performing exercises at the nearby Barry Goldwater base. But there were other reports of the triangular formation passing over Arizona towards Nevada and these have never been explained. At the time of the event, Arizona governor Fife Symington famously mocked the event, holding a press conference where he had a staff member dress up like an alien. But years later, he admitted to also seeing the event and admitted there was no explanation for it.

Saturday Am Update: The Fate of the Furious is right on pace with expectations, bringing in an estimated $11.2 million on Friday, en route to a $35-38 million second weekend. Meanwhile, the film will remain the #1 film in the world this weekend as its international total as of last night is $636.3 million and the international weekend estimate is currently $171 million from 65 territories as it looks to top $910 million by Sunday and will cross $1 billion worldwide next week. Of the new releases, it looks like Disneynature's Born in China will lead the way after it brought in $1.59 million on Friday, on its way to an opening weekend three-day around $4.6 million or so. Opening day audiences gave the film an "A-" CinemaScore, which is pretty much typical for these features. Warner's Unforgettable is proving to be anything but as it brought in a meager $1.67 million on Friday and is looking at a $4.4 million opening weekend.

Holdover The Fate of the Furious is expected to clobber a handful of new films that open Friday, including Katherine Heigl's erotic thriller Unforgettable, Armenian genocide drama The Promise, starring Christian Bale and Oscar Isaac, action-comedy Free Fire and sci-fi thriller Phoenix Forgotten. Disney also opens its latest nature documentary, Born in China.

Fate of the Furious is expected to earn $45 million or more in its second weekend after scoring the biggest global launch of all time with $535 million. (All eyes will be on the Universal film to see how much it drops.)

No dramatic tension here: “The Fate of the Furious” (Universal) again will be the top box-office performer in its second weekend, continuing its worldwide push to over $1 billion. Even with a steep fall (likely 55% to 60%), it could end up grossing double what we expect from the five new releases combined.

The next two weeks will see eight new mainstream releases, an unusually high number, and all are standalone, non-franchise entries. That’s rare these days. But unlike “Get Out,” “Hidden Figures,” and “La La Land” — three original movies that grossed $150 million or more at home in the last five months — none of the upcoming titles should do more than minor business.

Out in theaters this weekend is Phoenix Forgotten, the new docu-style film from Justin Barber that explores the possible alien sightings that happened back on March 13th, 1997 in Arizona, that still have yet to be answered to this day. Co-written by T.S. Nowlin and Barber, Phoenix Forgotten follows three tenacious teenagers who set out to find the truth of the Phoenix Lights phenomenon one fateful night, only to disappear without a trace, leaving their friends, family, and authorities perplexed about what happened to them after they ventured into the desert in search of the truth.

As expected, Universal's The Fate of the Furious debuted in grand fashion last weekend, setting a new box office record for a global opening weekend of $531.9 million, although its $98.7 million domestic debut was far from any sort of record. Over the past few years, the Fast & Furious franchise has established its dominance in the month of April, typically posting huge debuts and repeating atop the box office charts for several weeks in a row, before the summer movie season officially gets under way. The Fate of the Furious is expected to follow that pattern, repeating atop the box office with $49.2 million, easily beating out five new films arriving in nationwide release.

While it did come in under expectations, the high octane sequel easily came away with a box office win with $100.1 million. The sequel marks the first installment of the franchise's final trilogy, and while it didn't debut higher than the previous installment, it proves that the franchise can still draw a crowd.
