A Closer Look at Met Gala Themes Over the Years: 1995 to Today
Image
Every year, on the first Monday in May (well… most years), the fashion world holds its collective breath for the Met Gala — the ultimate high-glamour, high-concept costume party that doubles as a mega-charity event and pop culture fever dream. But beyond the red carpet looks that break the internet, there’s a rich history and purpose behind the spectacle.

Why the Met Gala? Because it’s where fashion becomes art, chaos becomes couture, and celebrities dare to dress like chandeliers, cardinals, or literal camp icons, all in the name of museum fundraising.

Hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Met Gala is not just a party, it’s the Costume Institute’s annual benefit, raising millions to support exhibitions, acquisitions, and conservation efforts. The brain behind this legendary night? Anna Wintour, Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief and reigning queen of fashion diplomacy. She’s been the gala...

How To Read Every Stephen King Book In Order
Image
Horror legend Stephen King has written a fair few books over the years. Ever since he burst on the scene with "Carrie" in 1974, he's given fans at least one book nearly every year. Since most of his work has been extremely popular, he's also established himself as a bit of an authority on the horror front -- and isn't shy about commenting about either the genre or his craft as a writer.

Thanks to King's status as a horror luminary and extensive work in many other genres, we've analyzed his work many times before. You may have seen us discuss why King's endings have a reputation for being disappointing, look into his biggest career regret involving (of all things) a forgotten TV commercial, and examine the one Stephen King book that will never get a film adaption due to the author voluntarily scrubbing it from his catalog.

However, in order...

Stephen King at an event for Un crime dans la tête (2004)
Stephen and Owen King’s ‘Sleeping Beauties’ Ponders the Destruction of a Patriarchal World [The Losers’ Club Podcast]
Stephen King at an event for Un crime dans la tête (2004)
In September 2018, journalist and bestselling author Otegha Uwagba tweeted, “Men should be glad women want equality and not revenge.” Espoused in response to the #MeToo Movement, her statement reflects justifiable rage for a world that seems intent on taking away female rights and treating women as less than human. Shortly before this collective culmination of fourth-wave feminism, Stephen King explored the concept in his 2017 novel Sleeping Beauties. Written with his son and fellow novelist Owen King, the sprawling story imagines a world without women and places the future of patriarchy entirely in the hands of a small group of female survivors.

In the latest episode of Bloody FM’s The Losers’ Club: A Stephen King Podcast, co-hosts Randall Colburn, Jenn Adams, Dan Pfleegor, and Julia Marchese dig into this extensive text while contemplating the authors’ intended audience. What kind of creature is Eve Black and does she have additional connections to King’s Dominion?...

Ranking Stephen King’s Worst Families [The Losers’ Club Podcast]
Stephen King at an event for Un crime dans la tête (2004)
Holiday dinners can be minefields. Your pretentious cousin won’t stop talking about her year abroad, your mom keeps asking when you plan to have kids, and your drunk uncle just spilled red wine all over the green bean casserole. Sometimes the tricks don’t end with Halloween and even the best sweet potato casserole can’t make up for the stress of listening to your dad go on yet another political rant.

But Constant Readers may rest assured that no matter what horrors may lie under your granny’s covered casserole dish, they won’t be as bad as the terrible families lurking in Stephen King’s Dominion. From the Cunninghams to the Hartsfields, the master of horror seems to delight in showing us the dark secrets that lie within every hearth and home.

This episode features a sour 16 of sinister clans, each duking it out to be named...

The Best Stephen King TV Series According To Rotten Tomatoes Was Canceled
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

There's no shortage of Stephen King shows on TV. The prolific horror author's works have been translated to the small screen no fewer than two dozen times across five-plus decades, beginning with Tobe Hooper's "Salem's Lot" miniseries in 1979 and spanning all the way to an upcoming "Sleeping Beauties" adaptation and Mike Flanagan's highly anticipated take on "The Dark Tower." Plenty of King shows have enjoyed celebrated runs and completed the stories their creators planned to tell, but there are a few that slipped through the cracks and were canceled too soon. Among them is "The Outsider," an utterly creepy King adaptation that got the short end of the stick when it debuted in 2020.

"The Outsider" earned rave reviews when it premiered on HBO in January of that year, but by the time its finale aired, the world had other things on its mind.

Upcoming Stephen King Movies and TV Series: Which Projects Are Still Happening?
Image
On Sept. 8, 2017, New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. Pictures released It: Chapter One, the first of two movies based on the classic 1986 novel by Stephen King and a film destined to go down in cinema history as the highest grossing horror movie of all time, earning $701 million worldwide against a measly budget of $40 million or so.

It: Chapter One proved that a mainstream, high-quality, studio-backed picture could still be made from King’s work, after a nearly 20-year period in which many adaptations either did moderately well (1408), bombed outright (Dreamcatcher), or vanished into VOD hell.

Naturally, eager studios and producers unveiled a new wave of King adaptations in It’s wake, for theaters, cable, and hungry-for-content streamers. For a while, it seemed like every week brought the announcement of a new King title. But seven years, one global pandemic, and two industry strikes later, many of these projects have yet to...

Archival Looks, Recycled Materials and Lab Grown Jewels Puts Spotlight on Sustainability at Met Gala
Image
Fashion’s biggest night is star-studded event all around — usually with a focus on new clothes — but this year a less talked-about topic joined the conversation at the Met Gala in a big way: sustainability.

Monday night’s event kicked off with La La Anthony, a red carpet co-host for Vogue‘s livestream, proudly declaring that she was wearing “pre-loved vintage accessories” from eBay. The announcement set the stage for some of the celebrities who Anthony and her co-hosts, Gwendoline Christie and Ashley Graham, interviewed throughout the night who also showcased their sustainable red-carpet choices.

Designer Stella McCartney was joined by actress and model Cara Delevingne, singer FKA Twigs and singer Ed Sheeran on the Met Gala red carpet. The British designer created custom looks for each of her guests, all made from 100 percent sustainable materials.

The designer’s brand collaborated with sustainable jewelry company Vrai for Delevingne’s and Sheeran’s looks.

Met Gala 2024: Nicole Kidman Turns Back Time in 1950s-Inspired Balenciaga Gown
Image
Nicole Kidman certainly turned back the clock in her Balenciaga look at the Met Gala.

Designed by creative director Demna Gvasalia, the Oscar-winning star stepped out in a 1950s-inspired white double silk bustier and flared skirt over frayed layers of black silk organza to mimic feathers. The original gown was inspired by the ruffled dresses worn by flamenco dancers, a nod to Balenciaga’s Spanish heritage.

“It was based on a dress in 1951 by Balenciaga at that time by Cristóbal,” Kidman told La La Anthony on the red carpet. “It was something that I saw in [a Richard] Avedon photo [of Dorian Leigh from Harper’s Bazaar]. I asked Demna if he was willing to reinterpret it. So he reinterpreted it in the vein of the sleeping beauties and the gowns, bringing them back to life. So I consider this to be a ‘Sleeping Beauty’ brought back to life. It’s an honor...

The Kardashians ‘Snubbed’ From Met Gala After Years On A-List?

Though the ensembles have not always been the best, the KarJenner family has been ones to watch when it comes to the Met Gala. For Kim Kardashian, she went to great lengths for the 2022 Met. She donned Marilyn Monroe’s iconic gold dress and showed how hard she had to work out in order to fit into it. Though she maintained she was a “shapeshifter,” this dress was tailor-made for Monroe. Therefore, nothing could be done for Kim when the dress did not seamlessly slide right up.

Susanna Moore on Jane Campion’s Complex Cowboy in ‘Power of the Dog’
Image
For Variety‘s Writers on Writers, Susanna Moore pens a tribute to “Power of the Dog” (screenplay by Jane Campion).

Jane Campion’s film “The Power of the Dog” is an adaptation of the 1967 novel of the same name, written by Thomas Savage and set in Montana in 1925. The landscape, rich with beauty and meaning, soon reveals the characters in all of their solitude and torment, and we realize that “The Power of the Dog” is something far more complex than an amplification of an idealized West and its codes of conduct. The tension that pervades the film is hard to reconcile with the masculine vitality and even brash gallantry inherent in the myth of the American cowboy.

The actors in the film, Benedict Cumberbatch (the rancher Phil Burbank), Jesse Plemons (Phil’s brother George), Kirsten Dunst, all of whom are averse to personal revelation and exposure, leave it to...

Stephen King Breaks Down His New Miniseries ‘Lisey’s Story’
Image
When Rolling Stone asked Stephen King to pick his best book in 2014, he didn’t go for an obvious candidate like The Stand, The Shining, It, Carrie, or Misery. Instead, he picked the relatively obscure Lisey’s Story. The 2006 novel centers around a woman who travels to an alternate universe while trying to come to terms with the death of her husband.

“That one felt like an important book to me because it was about marriage, and I’d never written about that,” King said. “I wanted to talk about...

‘But I’m a Cheerleader’ Director Jamie Babbit on the Queer Classic 20 Years Later: ‘I Wanted to Make a Gay ‘Clueless”
Image
The first time director Jamie Babbit heard the song “Both Sides Now” on the radio, it immediately felt familiar.

She realized she knew the song, not from Joni Mitchell’s expansive library of hits, but because it had been sung at the drug and rehab center her mom ran in Ohio, with different lyrics meant to amplify the perils of addiction.

The revamped lyrics went: “I’ve looked at drugs from both sides now. And still somehow it’s drug delusions. I recall, I really don’t like drugs at all.”

“Growing up, I always thought, ‘Wow, that’s a fun song.’ I didn’t think about the lyrics. But obviously my mom was singing it because it was a drug rehab song,” Babbit recently recalled in an interview with Variety. “And then I heard the Joni Mitchell song on the radio and it had totally different lyrics. I was like,...

Stephen King’s ‘The Stand’ Set for December Premiere at CBS All Access
Image
CBS All Access‘ limited series adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Stand” will premiere Dec. 17, the streamer announced Tuesday.

The series will be a weekly one, with each of the subsequent eight episodes streaming one at a time every Thursday following that premiere. As previously announced, King penned the finale and also wrote a new coda that will take the story beyond where is 800-plus page 1978 tome left things.

“During the two years we spent making ‘The Stand,’ we all felt the responsibility of adapting what may be the most beloved work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, but none of us could have imagined that Stephen King’s 40-year-old masterpiece about a global pandemic would come to be so eerily relevant,” said showrunner Benjamin Cavell. “We’re honored to tell this sprawling, epic story, including a new coda that Stephen King has wanted to add for decades.

Stephen King Argues That the Oscars Are ‘Still Rigged In Favor of White People’
Stephen King at an event for Un crime dans la tête (2004)
Stephen King criticized the Oscars’ failure to nominate diverse artists in a Washington Post column Monday, arguing that the awards show was still “rigged in favor of white people.”

The prolific horror author noted that creative excellence isn’t limited by an individual’s background and stressed that diversity makes art richer and bolder. Though King noted that the film industry has made advances in diversity over the decades, he argued that progress was far from where it should be, especially with regards to high-profile ceremonies such as the Academy Awards.

King’s column was published around two weeks after he received criticism for tweeting that he only considered quality in art, rather than diversity. Though King elaborated in subsequent tweets that he meant to stress that an individual’s background should not impede their odds at success, there was still consistent pushback. “When They See Us” creator Ava DuVernay was particularly critical of King,...

Castle Rock Season 2 Easter Egg Filled Promo Takes You on a Road Trip From Castle Rock to Jerusalem’s Lot
Hulu has released an interesting promo spot for Castle Rock Season 2. It takes the viewers on a 14-minute long road trip from Castle Rock to Jerusalem’s Lot and the radio is on to keep you entertained as you travel.

You are supposed to keep a lookout to see if you can see or hear anything. I will say, there are a ton of references to some of Stephen King’s popular stories including Stand By Me, Misery, Salem’s Lot, Maximum Overdrive, It, Needful Things, The Mist, Under The Dome, Pet Semetary, Sleeping Beauties, The Shawshank Redemption, 11/22/63, The Stand, The Dead Zone, and more!

For those of you who are familiar with King’s work, these references aren’t hard to catch. You just have to listen. This is actually a pretty cool promo and while it may seem boring for some, it’s exciting for the Stephen King fans like myself.

‘Sleeping Beauties’: Tale By Stephen King & Owen King Set For 2020 Comic Book Series
Stephen King at an event for Un crime dans la tête (2004)
Exclusive: Idw Publishing of San Diego will adapt Sleeping Beauties, the bestselling 2017 novel by Stephen King and Owen King, as a 10-part comic book epic by the international tandem of Canadian novelist Rio Youers (The Forgotten Girl) and London-based artist and architect Alison Sampson (Winnebago Graveyard).

Idw has the series slated for a high-profile launch in early 2020.

Sleeping Beauties is a dark fantasy tale that some critics have framed as an gripping allegory for toxic masculinity and contemporary gender politics in the wake of the #metoo movement. In the story a plague called Aurora (named after Disney’s knackered princess) has left the world’s women in a deep, cocooned slumber that exiles them to their dreams. Society, meanwhile, is left entirely in the hands of men and quickly plunges into savagery.

The provocative novel of 700-plus pages was published by Simon & Schuster and marked the first collaboration between the Kings,...

Stephen King and Owen King’s Sleeping Beauties Gets Pilot Script Order from AMC
Before it was even published back in 2017, Stephen King and Owen King's Sleeping Beauties was in development as a TV series at Anonymous Content, and while the news front for the adaptation has been quiet for quite some time, it's now being reported that AMC has ordered a pilot episode script for the potential series about a world where all of the women have fallen into a deep slumber... and become violent if awoken.

Deadline reports that AMC "made a pilot script commitment" for a potential Sleeping Beauties series, with Owen King writing the script and Michael Sugar and Ashley Zalta executive producing through Sugar23, a production banner with a first-look deal at Anonymous Content (Sugar and Zalta picked up the rights to adapt Sleeping Beauties when they were at Anonymous Content).

AMC is developing a series adaptation of the supernatural horror novel Sleeping Beauties, which comes from Stephen King and his son Owen King. A pilot script has been ordered, and Owen will write that script.

The story certainly sounds like an interesting one! It’s said to be a “timely metaphorical story about women and the gender role by imagining what would happen if men were left alone.”

The series is set “in the near future in a small Appalachian town whose primary employer is a women’s prison. Something happens when women go to sleep; they become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent. And while they sleep they go to another place. Meanwhile, the men are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, the mysterious Evie, is...

Adaptation of Stephen and Owen King’s ‘Sleeping Beauties’ Novel in the Works at AMC
Owen King
A TV adaptation of Stephen and Owen King’s “Sleeping Beauties” is in development at AMC, an individual with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap.

Here’s the description for the 2017 novel:

In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: they become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent. And while they sleep they go to another place, a better place, where harmony prevails and conflict is rare.

One woman, the mysterious “Eve Black,” is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease. Is Eve a medical anomaly to be studied? Or is she a demon who must be slain? Abandoned, left to their increasingly primal urges, the men divide into warring factions, some wanting to kill Eve, some to save her.

AMC Makes Pilot Script Deal For Owen & Stephen King Novel ‘Sleeping Beauties;’ Owen King To Write It
Exclusive: AMC has made a pilot script commitment on the Owen King & Stephen King’s bestselling novel Sleeping Beauties. The goal is to create an open ended TV series and Owen King has been set to write the pilot script. Sugar23’s Michael Sugar and Ashley Zalta will be exec producers.

The book has the obligatory scares one would expect from the past work of the father-son author duo, but tells a timely metaphorical story about women and the gender role by imagining what would happen if men were left alone. It takes place in the near future in a small Appalachian town whose primary employer is a women’s prison. Something happens when women go to sleep; they become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent. And while they sleep they go to another place.

Stephen King Looks Back on His Pet Sematary Book: This Is Awful
This weekend we will finally see the release of co-directors Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer's remake of Stephen King's scariest novel Pet Sematary starring Jason Clarke and John Lithgow. Like most people out there on this planet Earth, I consider King's source novel to be one of the greats of the genre, but what does King himself think of his 1983 book? Well, it turns out the master of horror doesn't care for it. Like, at all. In fact, King recently let it be known loud and clear that he doesn't like the novel, going so far as to call it "awful" and "really f---ing terrible." Don't hold back now, Mr. King, tell us how you really feel.

"No, I mean it's true. I listened to it last year when I was down here in Florida walking on the beach with the dog. Michael C. Hall [of Dexter and Six Feet Under] did the audiobook.

Patrick’s Favorites of 2017
This past year was simply too good for horror fans.

I wasn’t sure where to even start making a list of favorites for 2017. Theatrical horror killed it like never before, the indie scene remains vital and strong, horror TV is bigger than ever, and cult and boutique video labels continue putting out gorgeous Blu-rays of gem after gem. There’s really too much to include here. Movies like Get Out, The Shape of Water, and Raw are absolutely among my favorites of the year, but because I’ve talked about them elsewhere and they’ve previously been covered by my brilliant colleagues here at Daily Dead, I’ll try to focus on some other picks instead.

Here, in no real order, are some of my favorites in horror for 2017:

Stephen King: 2017 was one of the best years to be a Stephen King fan I can remember in my lifetime,...

Sleeping Beauties: Stephen King and Owen King Novel Getting a Pilot at AMC
John Saavedra Apr 17, 2019

Sleeping Beauties, the new novel from Stephen and Owen King, isn't out yet, but it's already becoming a TV show!

The return of Stephen King to both big and small screens continues with Sleeping Beauties, the novel co-written with the writer's son, Owen King. AMC has ordered a pilot, according to Deadline, and a script is being penned by the younger King.

The show has been in talks since before the novel was even published in 2017. This is the first movement we've heard regarding the project since it was optioned by Anonymous Content two years ago, which is producing along with Sugar23's Michael Sugar and Ashley Zalta.

Sleeping Beauties tells the story of a nightmare near future where women suffer from a horrific sleeping disease and how this affects the men of a small Appalachian town and a woman who is mysteriously immune to the disease.
