With filming of The Boys season 5 wrapped, focus is now on the next spinoff series in the works. It’s all about Vought Rising.

Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash will lead The Boys prequel series, bringing Soldier Boy and Stormfront back into the mix. As we know, both of these characters were around in the 1940s and 1950s, allowing for a prequel series about the growth of Vought International.

Like The Boys and its spinoff Gen V, the show needs more than two actors to run the series. Now that Vought Rising production is getting ready to start, we get to hear of more joining the cast.

Exclusive: Writer-director Blaise Beyhan has set an impressive cast for his debut feature, Callback. Currently in production in New York City, the film will star Asa Germann (Gen V), Aaron Moten (Fallout), and Dennis Quaid (The Substance).

Based on Beyhan’s short of the same name, with Paul Fitzgerald (The Residence) reprising his role, the film’s plot is being kept under wraps. Others in the ensemble include Giovanni Ribisi (Sneaky Pete), Jai Courtney (Suicide Squad), Willa Fitzgerald (Strange Darling), Carla Gugino (Heads of State), Trew Mullen (Blink Twice), and Hamish Linklater (Nickel Boys).

The project reunites a number of the creatives behind Magenta Light Studios’ cult hit 2024 thriller, Strange Darling, including Willa Fitzgerald, who starred; Jt Mollner, who wrote and directed; and Ribisi, who served as cinematographer.

“The Old Guard” is back and Netflix’s new sequel boasts both familiar and new faces.

The series, returning five years after the first film debuted, follows a group of immortals who task themselves with protecting the mortal world from threats while working to keep their long lives as secret as possible for fear of capture and study. The latest film brings back Charlize Theron and introduces new A-listers into the mix like Uma Thurman.

Gotham Award winner Danielle Deadwyler (Till) is teaming with Alix Madigan and Michael Sherman to develop and produce The Street, a feature adaptation of the novel by Ann Petry, in which she’s set to star.

Also aboard the project is Gina Atwater (Westworld), who will write the script and serve as executive producer.

Reissued in 2022, Petry’s 1946 debut novel was famously the first book by a Black woman to sell over one million copies. This is the harrowing story of young Black woman Lutie Johnson (Deadwyler) and her spirited struggle to raise her son amid the violence, poverty, and racial dissonance of Harlem in the late 1940s.

Rosanna Arquette and Ashton Sanders have been cast in Corporate Retreat, a horror-thriller currently in pre-production. The film, written and directed by Aaron Fisher, will begin principal photography in June.

Corporate Retreat centers on a group of corporate executives whose bonding retreat takes a deadly turn as they face off against a vengeful retreat leader. Fisher co-wrote the script with Kerri Lee Romeo. The project is being produced by Passage Pictures, with Uri Singer serving as producer.

Arquette, known for her roles in Pulp Fiction, Desperately Seeking Susan, and After Hours, brings a wealth of experience to the cast. Her recent television credits include Presumed Innocent (Apple TV), Florida Man (Netflix), and Big Sky (ABC).

Sanders, who gained widespread recognition in Moonlight, also starred in Native Son, Judas and the Black Messiah, Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody, and The Equalizer 2.

Fisher’s previous directorial work includes the romantic drama Inside the Rain.

Are authors heroes or simply an inevitable product of their times and society? And who is entitled to talk about heroes? The small-budgeted indie ‘The Problem of the Hero (2025) puts these questions on the table. The Shaun Dozier-directed film dramatizes the actual March 1941 encounters between two literary men: Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paul Green (David zum Brunnen) and Richard Wright (J. Mardrice Henderson). Wright’s play ‘Native Son,’ a collaboration of both writers, is based on his own successful novel. Its theatrical life (abstractly but vividly captured in the film) is left to the hands of none other than Orson Welles and John Houseman, co-founders of the famous Mercury Theatre.

While cleverly stating Welles’ operatic monstrosity early on, ‘The Problem of the Hero’ mainly adapts an unpublished, eponymous chronicle of a friendship and partnership between a white and a Black writer (Green and Wright) that seems to have evolved in entirely different directions.

Adaptation is a tricky business. Taking words from the page and putting them in the mouths of characters on a stage or a screen is no mean feat in itself. With The Problem Of The Hero, co-writers James A Hodge and Ian Finley attempt a tricky double loop, adapting Finley’s play Native which, in turn, reimagines the off-stage conflict between pioneering Black author Richard Wright and Pullitzer prize-winning white dramatist Paul Green over the Broadway adaptation of Wright's successful novel Native Son. The drama plays out in the run-up to their play’s 1941 debut, co-produced by Orson Welles (Charlie Cannon).

The film, directed by feature debutant Shaun Dozier, retains the density of dialogue you might expect from a stage play but, by leaning into the theatrical nature of the proceedings, Dozier is in some ways able to make this into a virtue.

Art Evans, the actor known for his roles in Die Hard 2 and A Soldier’s Story, has died. He was 82.

The actor’s rep tells Deadline he died on Saturday, Dec. 21 of diabetes, “a condition he courageously managed for many years.” No other details were immediately available.

“Art was not only an incredible actor but a devoted husband, friend, and source of light to everyone who knew him,” his wife Babe said in a statement. “His laughter, passion, and love of life will be deeply missed. While our hearts are heavy, we celebrate the legacy of joy and inspiration he leaves behind.”

His talent reps LyNea Bell and Charleen McGuire remembered him as “a remarkable talent who touched many lives with his work. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”

HBO Max is dead. Long live Max.

The new combined streaming service launched on Tuesday, and in addition to housing all of HBO Max and Discovery+’s content in one place, Max also plays host to a robust library of movies and TV shows streaming in 4K Uhd. At launch, more than 1,000 hours of programming are available in 4K, and Max says more will be added in the coming months.

Right now, you can stream all the “Harry Potter” movies, the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” trilogies, the “Dark Knight” trilogy, the “Matrix” films, “Dune,” “Joker” and even “The Wizard of Oz” and “Goodfellas” in 4K. Another month, another Criterion Channel lineup. In accordance with Black History Month their selections are especially refreshing: seven by Melvin Van Peebles, five from Kevin Jerome Everson, and Criterion editions of The Harder They Come and The Learning Tree.

Regarding individual features I’m quite happy to see Abderrahmane Sissako’s fantastic Bamako, last year’s big Sundance winner (and Kosovo’s Oscar entry) Hive, and the remarkably beautiful Portuguese feature The Metamorphosis of Birds. Add a three-film Laura Dern collection (including the recently canonized Smooth Talk) and Pasolini’s rarely shown documentary Love Meetings to make this a fine smorgasboard.

After teaming for Academy Award winner “Ex Machina” and the upcoming project “Men,” A24 has announced Alex Garland’s latest movie, “Civil War.”

Kirsten Dunst is set to star alongside Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Cailee Spaeny in the action film written and directed by Garland. Aside from the fact that the film is set in a near future America, plot details are being kept under wraps.

In 2016, Garland received an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay for “Ex Machina,” which also won an Oscar for achievement in visual effects. Garland followed the critically acclaimed movie with 2018’s “Annihilation” and the FX series “Devs.” His upcoming projects include “Men,” starring Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear, which A24 will release later this year.

Leading an all-Black cast, Gray stars in the Paramount Players movie as Bri, a 16-year-old who wants to become one of the greatest rappers of all time — or, as the film’s longline says, “at least win her first rap battle.” The coming-of-age story follows Bri’s fight to rise to the top, despite the cards being stacked against her.

Los Lobos deliver a faithful rendition of the Beach Boys’ “Sail on, Sailor” as one of the first offerings from the band’s upcoming album Native Sons, featuring Los Lobos’ covers of Los Angeles-area artists.

During the SXSW panel for Genius: Aretha, Grazer said that they had a long list people for the next installment of the series that spotlighted cultural icons like Einstein and Picasso. This list included scientists, Nobel laureates — but they never contemplated a musical artist, but when Aretha Franklin passed, he realized that the next installment was obvious.

In a competitive situation, Skydance Television has acquired the rights to P. Djéli Clark’s fantasy historical novella “Ring Shout” with plans to develop it as a television series.

KiKi Layne is attached to star in the project, with Kasi Lemmons attached to write, direct, and serve as showrunner. Both Lemmons and Layne will executive produce along with Clark, Marc Evans, Matt Jackson, and Skydance Television’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Bill Bost. The book was originally published by Tor Books in October.
