With filming of The Boys season 5 wrapped, focus is now on the next spinoff series in the works. It’s all about Vought Rising.
Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash will lead The Boys prequel series, bringing Soldier Boy and Stormfront back into the mix. As we know, both of these characters were around in the 1940s and 1950s, allowing for a prequel series about the growth of Vought International.
Like The Boys and its spinoff Gen V, the show needs more than two actors to run the series. Now that Vought Rising production is getting ready to start, we get to hear of more joining the cast.

Gotham Award winner Danielle Deadwyler (Till) is teaming with Alix Madigan and Michael Sherman to develop and produce The Street, a feature adaptation of the novel by Ann Petry, in which she’s set to star.
Also aboard the project is Gina Atwater (Westworld), who will write the script and serve as executive producer.
Reissued in 2022, Petry’s 1946 debut novel was famously the first book by a Black woman to sell over one million copies. This is the harrowing story of young Black woman Lutie Johnson (Deadwyler) and her spirited struggle to raise her son amid the violence, poverty, and racial dissonance of Harlem in the late 1940s.
In a statement accompanying the development announcement, Deadwyler said, “Ann Petry’s The Street has quaked my understanding of motherhood, Black and American family life experiences on how to just get by (historically), and the festering emotions that seed alongside the wilted...

Are authors heroes or simply an inevitable product of their times and society? And who is entitled to talk about heroes? The small-budgeted indie ‘The Problem of the Hero (2025) puts these questions on the table. The Shaun Dozier-directed film dramatizes the actual March 1941 encounters between two literary men: Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paul Green (David zum Brunnen) and Richard Wright (J. Mardrice Henderson). Wright’s play ‘Native Son,’ a collaboration of both writers, is based on his own successful novel. Its theatrical life (abstractly but vividly captured in the film) is left to the hands of none other than Orson Welles and John Houseman, co-founders of the famous Mercury Theatre.
While cleverly stating Welles’ operatic monstrosity early on, ‘The Problem of the Hero’ mainly adapts an unpublished, eponymous chronicle of a friendship and partnership between a white and a Black writer (Green and Wright) that seems to have evolved in entirely different directions.

Adaptation is a tricky business. Taking words from the page and putting them in the mouths of characters on a stage or a screen is no mean feat in itself. With The Problem Of The Hero, co-writers James A Hodge and Ian Finley attempt a tricky double loop, adapting Finley’s play Native which, in turn, reimagines the off-stage conflict between pioneering Black author Richard Wright and Pullitzer prize-winning white dramatist Paul Green over the Broadway adaptation of Wright's successful novel Native Son. The drama plays out in the run-up to their play’s 1941 debut, co-produced by Orson Welles (Charlie Cannon).
The film, directed by feature debutant Shaun Dozier, retains the density of dialogue you might expect from a stage play but, by leaning into the theatrical nature of the proceedings, Dozier is in some ways able to make this into a virtue.

When "Star Trek: The Next Generation" first began in 1987, LeVar Burton was probably the biggest star in the cast. He had already been nominated for three Emmys, once in 1977 for playing Kunta Kinte in the celebrated miniseries "Roots," and two more in 1985 and 1986 for hosting the beloved book-based kid program "Reading Rainbow." The latter show would end up netting him 12 Emmy wins between 1990 and 2007, and cement his reputation as one of his generation's preeminent TV celebrities. The fact that he would be selected to play chief engineer Geordi La Forge on "Star Trek" only more deeply entrenched Burton in the public's awareness.
Geordi La Forge was, more than anything, a nerd. He was deeply interested in machines and engines, and Burton was given the lion's share of NextGen's nonsensical polysyllabic technobabble. He was also notoriously undersexed. Geordi was equipped with a visor that tapped directly into his brain, feeding him...

I consider myself something like a student, autodidact or otherwise, of cinema and––even still, must confess––had not ever grasped the concept of Argentine noir. Credit to Criterion Channel, who’ll expand my horizons with February’s program (concisely titled “Argentine Noir”) that includes one known title––Pierre Chenal’s Native Son, an Argentine film from a French director adapting an American novel about the African-American experience in Chicago––and five I look forward to discovering. Retrospective-wise, their wide-reaching Claudette Colbert program could double as a lesson in Old Hollywood, between Capra, Stahl, DeMille, Lubitsch, Sirk, and Sturges. February, of course, brings Black History Month and Valentine’s Day: the former engenders a series featuring films such as Nothing but a Man, Portrait of Jason, and Losing Ground; the latter brings “New York Love Stories,” from Carol to Crossing Delancey to, curiously, Annie Hall, which likely would not have...

Chicago – Growth from a young and rising actor is defined by KiKi Layne. After getting her big break as Tish in “If Beale Street Could Talk” from 2018, she has build her resume in both independent (“Native Son”) and tentpole (“Coming 2 America”) films, and showcases her music talent as the title character in “Dandelion,” which opens Friday, July 12th.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Dandelion (KiKi Layne) is a struggling Cincinnati singer-songwriter in a downward spiral, including dead end gigs and a mother who needs caregiving. When she takes a last-ditch-effort gig at a motorcycle rally in South Dakota she meets Casey (Thomas Doherty), a guitarist who walked away from his dream long ago. As Dandelion joins Casey’s nomadic group of struggling musicians, the kindred spirits make music together and strike up a whirlwind romance.
The film is a passionate meditation on young love and the sensitive artist trying to interpret it. The...

The Criterion Channel’s February Lineup Includes Melvin Van Peebles, Douglas Sirk, Laura Dern & More
Another month, another Criterion Channel lineup. In accordance with Black History Month their selections are especially refreshing: seven by Melvin Van Peebles, five from Kevin Jerome Everson, and Criterion editions of The Harder They Come and The Learning Tree.
Regarding individual features I’m quite happy to see Abderrahmane Sissako’s fantastic Bamako, last year’s big Sundance winner (and Kosovo’s Oscar entry) Hive, and the remarkably beautiful Portuguese feature The Metamorphosis of Birds. Add a three-film Laura Dern collection (including the recently canonized Smooth Talk) and Pasolini’s rarely shown documentary Love Meetings to make this a fine smorgasboard.
See the full list of February titles below and more on the Criterion Channel.
Alan & Naomi, Sterling Van Wagenen, 1992
All That Heaven Allows, Douglas Sirk, 1955
The Angel Levine, Ján Kadár, 1970
Babylon, Franco Rosso, 1980
Babymother, Julian Henriques, 1998
Bamako, Abderrahmane Sissako, 2006
Beat Street, Stan Lathan, 1984
Blacks Britannica, David Koff, 1978

“The first thing that I was interested in exploring with Sean was just having the opportunity to play such a different character from roles that I’ve played in the past,” says Nick Robinson about what drew him to “Maid,” the Netflix limited series in which he plays an addict who emotionally abuses his partner Alex (Margaret Qualley) until she leaves with their daughter to try to make a better life. It’s a more sinister role than we’ve seen him play before in projects like “The Kings of Summer,” “Love, Simon,” and “A Teacher.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Seersvp now for November 29: ‘Maid’ panel with Margaret Qualley, Andie MacDowell, showrunner Molly Smith Metzler, director/EP John Wells

Paramount Players has hired newcomer Jamila C. Gray to star in “On the Come Up,” the upcoming film adaptation of Angie Thomas’ New York Times bestselling follow-up book to “The Hate U Give.”
Leading an all-Black cast, Gray stars in the Paramount Players movie as Bri, a 16-year-old who wants to become one of the greatest rappers of all time — or, as the film’s longline says, “at least win her first rap battle.” The coming-of-age story follows Bri’s fight to rise to the top, despite the cards being stacked against her.
“It’s hard to get your come up when you’re mislabeled a troublemaker at school, and your fridge at home is empty after your mom loses her job,” the description explains. “So Bri pours her anger and frustration into her first song, which goes viral … for all the wrong reasons.”

Exclusive: Actress Sanaa Lathan will be making her feature directorial debut on Paramount Players’ adaptation of Angie Thomas’ New York Times bestseller On the Come Up.
The feature project has been a priority for Paramount Players and they were impressed with Lathan’s vision for the film, the story of which comes from the author of The Hate U Give; that novel turned into a 2019 Fox 2000 motion picture.

The spark for Genius: Aretha was a result of a confluence of events, according to Brian Grazer, who serves as executive producer on the Nat Geo series. During the SXSW panel for Genius: Aretha, Grazer said that they had a long list people for the next installment of the series that spotlighted cultural icons like Einstein and Picasso. This list included scientists, Nobel laureates — but they never contemplated a musical artist, but when Aretha Franklin passed, he realized that the next installment was obvious.
Franklin grew up in a time that was filled with cultural divisiveness and her home life was difficult to navigate during that time. “This is a story that should be much more than a movie,” said Grazer, who was joined on the panel moderated...

It takes a genius to know one. So, it only makes sense that the creators behind Nat Geo’s Genius series would tap Suzan-Lori Parks to showrun, executive-produce and write Season 3, Genius: Aretha.
One of the most heralded playwrights of our time, Parks was the first African American woman to receive a Pulitzer Prize in Drama, which she earned for her 2001 play Topdog/Underdog. Parks is also a Tony Award winner and a MacArthur “Genius” grant recipient. But it’s the time she spent as a student of author, activist and playwright James Baldwin at Hampshire College that she holds most dear.

Among the country’s preeminent dramatists, Suzan-Lori Parks has won a 2002 Pulitzer Prize for her play Topdog-Underdog and a 2012 Tony for an adaptation of Porgy and Bess. Along the way Parks, 57, has dipped a toe in Hollywood, as far back as 1996’s Girl 6, which she wrote for Spike Lee. In recent years, she’s ramped up her screenwriting efforts — first with Native Son, the 2019 film adaptation of Richard Wright’s landmark 1940 novel, and next with The United States vs. Billie Holiday (out Feb. 26 on Hulu).
