Actor Jack Quaid was recently asked what his ideal role would be while participating in a Reddit Ama t to promote his newly released action-comedy flick, Novocaine.
Interestingly enough, Quad revealed that he wants to star in a BioShock movie, as that's his favorite game. Perhaps the timing of this reveal is not so coincidental as Netflix is currently working on just that.
"I would actually love to be in a live action adaptation of Bioshock - one of my favorite games of all time. I think there's such a rich lore to that game that could be explored in a TV or movie adaptation."
"I've seen people say that I look like Max Payne, and when I've looked at the box art, even I did a double-take. I love Rockstar's games, but unfortunately I've never played that one - it's next on the list, for sure."

Novocaine feels like a love letter to great action films. The new action-comedy is intense, as the main character is unable to feel pain and takes some brutal hits throughout the runtime. Some scenes are clear homages, like how Home Alone inspired a scene with booby traps or how the gimmick in Upgrade gave the directors inspiration for the fight scenes.
However, a classic Jason Statham thriller felt particularly similar to Novocaine, and it even seems like the team behind Novocaine tried to reference Statham's 2006 cult-classic, Crank. Jack Quaid's Novocaine character might not be a hitman like Jason Statham in Crank, but he certainly proves he has the skillset for it.
'Crank' and 'Novocaine' Share Quite a Few Similarities
Novocaine almost feels like someone tried to remake Crank two decades later. Jack Quaid's Novocaine character, Nathan Caine, might not be an assassin like Jason Statham's Crank character, Chev Chelios.

Earlier today, Amazon MGM Studios officially announced the start of production on their upcoming untitled Jack Ryan feature film, which will return 4x Primetime Emmy-nominee John Krasinski to the title role, and will serve as a sequel to the acclaimed Prime Video television series.
Andrew Bernstein is helming the feature, with a screenplay from Krasinski and Aaron Rabin. Bernstein previously helmed three episodes in season two of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, while Rabin penned five of the six episodes in the final season. Both also served as executive producers on their respective seasons.
In addition to Krasinski (The Office; A Quiet Place; 13 Hours) as the titular Jack Ryan, returning cast members will include Wendell Pierce (The Wire; Suits; Superman) as James Greer, Michael Kelly (House of Cards; Dawn of the Dead; Secret Invasion) as Mike November, and Betty Gabriel (Get Out; Upgrade; Defending Jacob) as Elizabeth Wright.

In the build-up to Wolf Man's release, the design of the titular monster was seemingly unveiled when photos of a guy in a mask at Universal's theme park attraction found their way online.
Though this did turn out to be the basis for the werewolf that attacks our protagonists in Leigh Whannell's movie, the overall look came across a lot better on screen, and Blake (Christopher Abbott) ultimately transforms into a different beast altogether.
Even so, the "Hills Fever" wolfman's final design still proved to be highly divisive, and a lot of fans simply couldn't get on board with a near-hairless creature that looked far more man than wolf.
We've already seen some alternate creature designs from concept artist Constantine Sekeris, who has now taken to Instagram to share another early sketch. This take on the monster actually looks a little like the Wolfman from Monster Squad!

Thanks to An American Werewolf in London and The Howling, I’ve always deeply loved werewolves. Yet, sometimes, a movie will just connect to the viewer in a shockingly deep way. An unexpected way. Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man did just that for me. While I’ve certainly seen some of the reviews that did not sing the movie’s praise, there is something about this very personal and frankly pretty sad film that worked for me. Ultimately, something about the tortured Blake was nothing like I’d expected, and the rather heartbreaking performance from Christopher Abbott resonated.
I’ve enjoyed all of Leigh Whannell’s directorial work. Even his turn in the director’s chair for Insidious: Chapter 3 brought some chills for me. Having been at this site for many years, I find it a fantastic experience interviewing Mr. Whannell. He’s always been incredibly kind to JoBlo and...

The Terminator's cult following has only grown over the years, especially among tech noir science fiction fans. The film’s appeal extends beyond its niche, however, spawning a franchise made for the mainstream audience.
James Cameron's The Terminator streams for free on Tubi on Feb. 1. Released in 1984, this science fiction classic ranks as one of the genre's best films from that decade, which was then saturated by standouts like Predator, Aliens, RoboCop, and Blade Runner. The Terminator received mixed reviews but was a commercial hit, earning $78.3 million against its $6.4 million budget. It has spawned five sequels so far, most recently 2019's Terminator: Dark Fate. Despite anticipation for that film's release, it's the franchise's biggest disappointment to date (it grossed $250 million against a $185 million budget.

The director behind recent horror reboots The Invisible Man and Wolf Man, Leigh Whannell, has offered an update on the planned TV series spin-off to his acclaimed sci-fi action movie, Upgrade. But it’s probably not what fans wanted to hear. Speaking recently with The Hollywood Reporter, Whannell revealed that, despite the first movie ending on an ambiguous note and potentially setting up a sequel, as well as this sci-fi world leaving lots more to explore, the previous plans of spinning off Upgrade into a franchise are no longer happening.
Released back in 2018, Upgrade is written and directed by Leigh Whannell, and stars Logan Marshall-Green as technophobe Grey Trace who, while living in the technological age of 2046, finds himself attacked, his wife killed, and is left paralyzed. A billionaire inventor soon offers Trace a cure in the form of an artificial intelligence implant called Stem that will enhance his body...

Wolf Man is now playing in theaters everywhere, and while the film didn’t necessarily earn rave reviews from critics or audiences on Rotten Tomatoes (52% from critics and 58% from audiences), it still earned a respectable $15 million globally during its first weekend at the box office. The film comes from writer/director Leigh Whannell, who made his directorial debut in 2015 on Insidious: Chapter 3, and then followed that up three years later with Upgrade, the dystopian sci-fi thriller that’s currently streaming on Netflix. There had been whispers in the years following the movie’s release that Upgrade was going to get a sequel in the form of a TV show, but during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote Wolf Man, Whannell seems to believe that there won’t be anymore from the world of Upgrade coming anytime soon:...

Horror fans were very excited when it was announced that Leigh Whannell had stepped in to replace the departing Derek Cianfrance as director on Universal/Blumhouse's Wolf Man reboot, since the filmmaker had previously delivered his own take on another classic Universal Monster which proved to be a big critical and commercial hit.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Whannell is going to be able to repeat The Invisible Man's success.
Wolf Man arrived in theaters on Friday amid mostly negative reviews (it currently sits at 54% on Rotten Tomatoes), and the movie has now come in well below its already modest opening weekend box office estimates.
The downbeat werewolf flick was on track for a $17M-$21M bow, but only managed to take in $10.6M over three days (analysts believe it'll hit $12M by Monday).

Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man is now in theaters, and the Universal Monster reboot may be facing an uphill struggle after failing to take a big enough bite out of the box office over the weekend.
We're still waiting on international numbers, but the movie only managed to take in $4.45M on Friday (including Thursday previews) in North America, and is now on track for a $17M-$21M debut. This wouldn't exactly be a disaster for a film with a reported $25 million budget, but audiences really don't seem to be too fussed about this one.
Wolf Man has earned a C- CinemaScore, which is disappointing even for an R-rated horror movie. It's also dropped down to a "rotten" 54% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Again, overseas takings may be a lot better (and that relatively low budget has to be taken into consideration), but as things stand, Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King looks set to claim the No.

Though there may have once been plans for a follow-up to the film, Leigh Whannell seems to confirm the sequel to his underrated sci-fi action movie is no longer happening. The Australian filmmaker first rose to stardom thanks to 2004's Saw, a feature-length expansion of his and James Wan's horror short of the same name, with Whannell writing and co-starring in the film. Subsequent years saw Whannell and Wan's creative partnership continue with the first two Saw sequels, the first two Insidious movies and supernatural horror movie Dead Silence.
The past decade has seen Whannell expand his talents by stepping into the director's chair for a variety of movies, beginning with his feature debut on Insidious: Chapter 3. More recently, Whannell found widespread acclaim for his reboot of The Invisible Man, retooling and salvaging its original plans as part of Universal's scrapped Dark Universe franchise. After the success of The Invisible Man in 2020, Leigh Whannell reunited with Blumhouse for his recently released Wolf Man. Looking back at the success of his first Universal Monsters film, Whannell addressed the chances of a sequel.
Whannell has a long history with the horror genre, as he wrote several films directed by horror vet James Wan, and also helmed several Insidious installments. As he just premiered Wolf Man, a reboot of the 1941 film The Wolf Man, Whannell looked back at his first Universal Monsters project. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the director revealed that he doesn't feel The Invisible Man needs a sequel.

When Universal Pictures’ attempt at a Marvel-style “Dark Universe” flopped, Blumhouse stepped in with its own take on classic movie monsters. One of their biggest hits was The Invisible Man, which earned rave reviews and pulled in $144.5 million worldwide on just a $7 million budget.
Director Leigh Whannell, after working on The Invisible Man, shifted his focus to Wolf Man. For years, there’s been talk about a sequel focusing on Elisabeth Moss’s character, the “Invisible Woman.”
Jason Blum and James Wan have hinted that they’re open to continuing the story. However, Whannell recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he’s not interested in directing a sequel.

When Universal Pictures' plan for an McU-style "Dark Universe" fell apart, Blumhouse wasted no time putting its own spin on those iconic movie monsters. The Invisible Man was among the first and received rave reviews before grossing $144.5 million worldwide on a mere $7 million budget.
While filmmaker Leigh Whannell has since moved on to Wolf Man, there's been chatter for years about him helming a sequel revolving around Elisabeth Moss' "Invisible Woman."
The movie ended by teasing a vigilante-style follow-up and both Jason Blum and James Wan have left the door open to it becoming a reality in previous interviews.
Unfortunately, Whannell doesn't seem overly interested and closed the door on stepping behind the camera for The Invisible Woman while talking to The Hollywood Reporter (via FearHQ.com).
"An ending is the hardest thing to do in screenwriting. It’s the holy grail of screenwriting, and I revere movies with great endings.

Warning: This article discusses major spoilers for "Wolf Man."
Before Leigh Whannell took his talents to the Universal Monsters franchise for a double dip, the Australian filmmaker first plied his trade as an actor, a writer on the "Saw" and "Insidious" franchises, and (most importantly for our purposes here) a director who first made a name for himself with stylish, low-budget thrillers. His precise career trajectory has hardly been a typical one compared to most, but the broad strokes of working his way up the studio system until reaching his apex — thus far, at least — with "The Invisible Man" and most recently "Wolf Man" (which I reviewed for /Film here) couldn't have been more ideal. It's hard to miss how his latest monster movie feels like a culmination of almost every lesson learned in "The Invisible Man," particularly with its approach to making the title character feel fresh and modern.

It’s been an agonizing five-year wait for Leigh Whannell’s follow-up to his near-universally acclaimed The Invisible Man.
The Elisabeth Moss-led sci-fi thriller was the last hit movie before Covid forever altered the entertainment industry and world alike, having grossed nearly $140 million against a $7 million budget. Whannell’s victory lap may have been cut short as the U.S. population retreated inside during his film’s third week of release, but between The Invisible Man and his 2018 cult gem Upgrade, the Australian native officially reinvented himself as a must-see genre specialist, shedding his long-established identity as “one of the Saw guys” and “one half of Wan/Whannell.”
As the pandemic became more and more prolonged, Whannell and his co-writer/wife Corbett Tuck decided to channel their collectively challenging experience into Wolf Man, which is now another modern reimagining of a classic Universal monster à la The Invisible Man.

This article contains mild spoilers for "Wolf Man."
The centerpiece of any werewolf movie is its transformation sequence. Starting with George Waggner's "The Wolf Man" in 1941, witnessing a human being turn into a hairy, wolf-like beast has attracted horror nuts in droves. In "The Wolf Man," Lon Chaney, Jr. sat still in a chair for a static shot of his face. Then the film's brilliant makeup technicians would add a small layer of makeup and hair, and Chaney would be shot again. Several shots were layered together using clever cross-fading, giving the impression that he was transforming. It looks awesome to this day.
1981 was also a banner year for werewolf transformation, as it saw the release of Joe Dante's "The Howling" and John Landis' "An American Werewolf in London." Both of those films made extensive use of makeup, puppetry, models, and rubber creature heads to create some truly terrifying werewolf transformations.

However, others have found a deeper meaning to Leigh Whannell's recently released Wolf Man, a reimagining of a Universal monster classic. While Whannell had already prepared himself for criticism and hate of his wolf-transformation film, the film is proving to be extremely divisive among horror fans.

Much like anything in movies, trends come and go, and as fickle as audiences can be, we often find ourselves doubling back on an unfashionable trend to such a degree that you can't call it unfashionable anymore. Maybe more chic, if anything. We've seen some terrible CGI in the past few years in major releases, but with Leigh Whannell's upcoming Wolf Man, the director is falling into a promotional trap that many filmmakers are today. Whannell has made a big thing about the design of his wolf, saying about his CGI-free design (via SFX magazine): "Maybe there are some people that won't like it because they love the traditional wolf too much, but that was the approach I wanted.

This writer is a self-proclaimed connoisseur of “January horror”: the schlocky studio horror flicks that serve as counterprogramming to the wider releases of awards nominees that only came out in NYC or LA in December. However, recent years saw films like 2022’s Scream and M3GAN turn January horror into bonafide moviegoing events. Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man is the latest in that trend, but it forsakes what makes this genre work in the first place: fun.
Wolf Man Review
Like Whannell’s last take on a classic Universal Monster, Wolf Man is less of a remake than a modern interpretation. However, Whannell and co-writer Corbett Tuck reinterpret this classic by borrowing from the dozens of other werewolf movies that have come out since. The result is a film that feels generic and unoriginal to the point of being entirely disengaging.
The best thing about Wolf Man, bar none, is its special effects work.

Wolf Man is a reboot of the classic Universal Monsters movie The Wolfman, which focuses on a man who becomes a werewolf after falling victim to an ancient curse. In this version, a man must protect himself and his family when they are being stalked, terrorized, and haunted by a deadly werewolf at night during a full moon. As the night goes on, he starts to act strangely himself, hinting that something else is very wrong.
Wolf Man is directed by Leigh Whannell, and it was co-written by Whannell himself and Corbett Tuck. Whannell’s previous films with Blumhouse include The Invisible Man, Upgrade, and Insidious: Chapter 3. The director is also known for his work on the first three Saw films. Wolf Man heads to theaters on January 17.

Leigh Whannell may not be a name that everyone knows but, if you're a horror fan, he's undoubtedly touched your life in some way over the past 20 years. As the co-creator of both the long-running hit "Saw" franchise as well as "Insidious," he's certainly made a mark. That's to say nothing of his work as a director, which includes "Upgrade" and "The Invisible Man." In other words, Whannell's work is worth paying attention to. Case in point, his new take on "Wolf Man" is drawing more than a few eyeballs and figures to be a big hit for Blumhouse and Universal when it reaches theaters next weekend.
"Wolf Man" is currently looking at an opening weekend in the $20 to $30 million range, per Box Office Theory. That would be a solid start, particularly for a movie that was made on a shoestring $7 million production budget. Granted, that doesn't include marketing but,...

Blumhouse and Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man is set to hit theaters later this month, and tickets for the horror reboot are now officially on sale.
To accompany the announcement, we have some new posters, a TV spot and featurette giving us our best look yet at the other werewolf that Christopher Abbott's Blake will change into.
The new spot includes a (very) quick glimpse of the beast, but the featurette spotlights the full creature design via some concept maquettes. The video also features Whannell and the cast discussing this latest take on the classic Universal Monster.
It's entirely possible that what we've seen of the Wolf Man so far will not be the final form, as Blake could transform into a more lupine-looking creature towards the end of the movie.
See it. Fear it. Step into Leigh Whannell’s vision of #WolfManMovie. Only in theaters January 17. https://t.

From Blumhouse and visionary writer-director Leigh Whannell, the creators of the chilling modern monster tale The Invisible Man, comes a terrifying new lupine nightmare: Wolf Man.
Golden Globe nominee Christopher Abbott stars as Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed dead. With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte, fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger.
But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the dead of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter. Blumhouse is no stranger to horror. In fact, when the popular indie studio merged with Atomic Monster back in 2022, it became exciting to envision the Blumhouse monster movies that could exist because of it. For those who don't know, Atomic Monster has a first-look deal with Universal and has been the brains behind the recent Blumhouse monster movie iterations. Fans of Universal monsters such as Dracula and the Wolf Man have been excited about the recent films to come under the Blumhouse banner. Starting with The Invisible Man back in 2020, Blumhouse has reinvented the classic monster movie story. The next classic monster they will tackle is the Wolf Man and the first trailers look incredibly promising. Despite some hiccups with the early development of the project, The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell hyped many fans for his upcoming Blumhouse horror film Wolf Man.

A couple of leaked screenshots from The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man reboot have found their way online (via Reddit), and they reveal our first glimpse of the movie's other werewolf.
Our first look at what was assumed to be the titular Wolfman via an actor in a costume at Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights was met with a lot of backlash, but the most recent trailer appeared to confirm that this will be the creature responsible for the initial attack, leaving Christopher Abbott's Blake to change into a different beast altogether.
Whannell addressed the negative response during an interview with NME.
“The marketing department for a movie is so huge,” he said, “it’s really impossible to keep tabs on every single thing. So when something comes out that maybe the internet decides they don’t like, the only thing I can think is: ‘Well,...

Action movies are a dime-a-dozen. Still, now and again, filmmakers go above and beyond the call of duty to bring something fresh to the genre. In Novocaine, when the girl of his dreams (Amber Midthunder) is kidnapped, everyman Nate (Jack Quaid) turns his inability to feel pain into an unexpected strength in his fight to get her back.
For a concept this outlandish, we needed to speak with the film’s directors, Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, who, in their talk with us, shared the details of their approach to making an off-the-wall action film featuring a disabled protagonist who turns his condition into a superpower. The following interview explains how the duo navigates Nathan’s rare condition, how Leigh Whannell’s Upgrade inspired aspects of the film, and how the limits of the film’s violence are kept in check.
JoBlo: The premise for Novocaine is really off the wall.

Upgrade is an Australian movie where the protagonist gets an experimental implant after an accident that enhances his abilities and, eventually, his mind is controlled by the A.I. program that had started out just assisting him. Remnant is an Australian movie where the protagonist gets an experimental implant after an accident, which enhances her abilities, and, eventually, her mind is controlled by the A.I. program that was just occasionally helping her so far. One of these movies is extremely good, and the other one is really bad. Today, we have gathered here to talk about the latter, specifically its ending, which hinged on the revelation of the identity of a murderer and whether or not the protagonist had superpowers. So, bear with me as I try to understand what the hell was the point of all the sci-fi shenanigans and the serial killer subplot.

Ron Livingston can’t walk down the street without “Sex and the City” fans hating him. Or, more precisely, his infamous character Jack Berger.

When it comes to “epic sagas,” horror might not be the genre that first comes to mind. Sure, there are long-lasting franchises like Halloween, Friday the 13th, Saw, and Scream. But in terms of long-form storytelling with world-building and distinct character arcs, the closest to a “saga” would likely be The Walking Dead, with not only its main storyline in both comics and TV, but its many spin-offs as well.
It’s also not always the first genre folks think of when the term “worlds colliding” comes to mind. Of course, there’s your Alien vs. Predator and Freddy vs. Jason—but that’s just it, it’s always two characters opposing one another. Seldom are there team-ups, converging timelines, and characters from vastly different landscapes put in a position to work together in horror; that’s generally saved for your standard superhero fare.
But that’s exactly what happens...

Blumhouse and Universal have released a new trailer for their hairy horror, Wolf Man, out in January 2025.
Blumhouse’s Wolf Man has gone through a lot of production changes. Director, Leigh Whannell came onto the project off the back off two remarkable films (Upgrade and The Invisible Man) before being replaced by Derek Cianfrance, probably because he’s a regular collaborator of the film’s original star, Ryan Gosling. When Gosling left, replaced by Christopher Abbott, Whannell stepped back in.
We already got a teaser trailer back in September, but with the film’s January release edging ever closer, Universal has dropped another trailer for the film, this time revealing glimpses of the body horror to come. It’s not even a full moon right now, so we suppose it makes sense that we still haven’t fully seen the creature. Wolf Man stars Julia Garner, Christopher Abbott, Sam Jaeger...

Sci-fi is often designed to appeal to all ages, but R-rated sci-fi movies have the freedom to show extremely dark and violent futures. An R-rating allows a sci-fi movie to get more violent and more profane, which means that it can cater its story to a mature audience without having to worry. This suits dystopian fiction particularly well, as some visions of the future don't save room for redemption and silver linings.
The best dystopian sci-fi movies can show the bridge between the present and the bleak futures that they depict. Often, these dark futures aren't merely designed as warnings about what might come to pass. Instead, they are heightened reflections about prevalent topics in contemporary society, proving that the future isn't too far away after all. R-rated futuristic sci-fi movies can design their messages with an adult audience in mind.

Following an impressively creepy first teaser, Blumhouse has released a full trailer and a new poster for The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell's upcoming Wolf Man reboot, and it gives us a first glimpse of the movie's other werewolf.
Our first look at what was assumed to be the titular monster via an actor in a costume at Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights was met with a lot of backlash, but the first teaser did suggest that this will be the creature responsible for the initial attack, leaving Christopher Abbott's Blake to change into a different beast altogether.
This new look confirms that the movie will indeed feature another werewolf, and we catch a brief glimpse of the lycanthrope right at the end. From what we can make out, this creature design is... quite similar to the guy in the suit!
