Kevin (Probably) Saves the World

The Forgotten Horror Series Buffy The Vampire Slayer Fans Need To Watch
Image
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" looks set to rise from the grave, with Sarah Michelle Gellar reportedly set to return as her iconic character. This is great news for everyone who grew up watching the original series in the late '90s and early 2000s, but the revival probably won't arrive for a while yet, and that means having to wait impatiently. Still, what if we told you that there's an awesome show that's similar to "Buffy" and flew under the radar at the time of its release? That show exists and it's called "Reaper," and it deserves to be exhumed so it can finally gain the appreciation it deserves.

Created by Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters -- who Marvel fans will know for their work on "Agent Carter -- The CW's "Reaper" began life as a spec script for an episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." However, after being inspired...

‘Quantico’ Moves To Fridays At ABC After Cancellation Announcement
Priyanka Chopra Jonas in Quantico (2015)
After last week’s cancellation of Quantico, ABC has announced that the terrorism drama will finish out its third and final season on Friday nights.

Starting on May 25, Quantico will make its move from Thursday nights to Friday nights at 8 PM. The drama starring Priyanka Chopra is one of many ABC shows that got the ax last week. The ousted list includes Deception, The Crossing, Alex, Inc. as well as Kevin (Probably) Saves the World, The Mayor, Ten Days in the Valley and Marvel’s Inhumans.

Quantico, from ABC Studios and producer Mark Gordon, was a breakout when it debuted in fall 2015, setting delayed viewing lift records. But with its dense narrative and heavy serialization, the series started to lose momentum in the second half of its first season and continued to see declines though Season 2 and into Season 3.

It came down-to-the-wire last May for the drama series when it...

Kevin (Probably) Saves the World: Bad News? ABC Orders Three More Episodes
Kevin (Probably) Saves the World (2017)
Can anyone save Kevin? ABC has ordered three additional episodes of its new Kevin (Probably) Saves the World TV show, bringing the season one episode order to a total of 16. Whether that means the low-rated freshman dramedy is cancelled or renewed for a second season is a bit more complex. It has been languishing in ABC's problematic 10:00pm Tuesday timeslot and has failed to draw the sort of Nielsen numbers typical of a successful, new TV series. From creators Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, Kevin (Probably) Saves the World stars Jason Ritter as the self-involved Kevin Finn, who learns he is the last of his generation's 36 righteous souls meant to power it with the hope that can save the world from destruction. The ABC cast also includes: JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Kimberly Hébert Gregory, Chloe...

The venerable fantasy drama will shift from Sundays-at-8 to Fridays-at-8, where it will lead into the new Marvel entry Inhumans.

‘The Mayor’ Comedy, Shondaland’s ‘For the People’, ‘The Crossing’ & ‘The Gospel Of Kevin’ Get ABC Series Orders
ABC has kicked off the pickups of new series with nods to the hottest pilots from its sibling ABC Studios: comedy The Mayor, executive produced by Daveed Diggs and starring Lea Michele; and dramas For the People from Shondaland, The Crossing starring Steve Zahn, and The Gospel Of Kevin toplined by Jason Ritter whose appeal in the role was a major driving force behind the renewal. I hear most if not all of the other ABC Studios pilots are dead but will update on their…...

ABC Pickups Include Comedy About African-American Donald Trump — But He’s An Unlikely Mayor, With Advisors Who Actually Help
Takeshi Kaneshiro, Masami Nagasawa, Ziyi Zhang, Song Hye-kyo, and Xiaoming Huang in The Crossing (2014)
ABC has picked up four new series from its sister ABC Studios, including a new drama from Shonda Rhimes’ company, a drama about saving the world (starring Jason Ritter), a series about refugees… from America, and comedy that sounds like it might take a few cues from the recently installed White House inhabitant.

In “The Mayor,” Brandon Micheal Hall plays an aspiring young rapper, Courtney Rose, who decides – as a publicity stunt – to run for mayor. He did it solely to generate buzz and become rich and famous. Instead, he is actually elected mayor, an outcome he never predicted. Now he must lean on his mother (Yvette Nicole Brown) and friends, including Valentina (Lea Michele) to become the mayor he didn’t think he wanted to be.

Sound a bit Trumpy?

The series also stars Bernard David Jones and Marcel Spears. Executive producers include Daveed Diggs (Broadway’s “Hamilton”), writer Jeremy Bronson (“Speechless,...

Pilots 2017: Latest Buzz On What’s Hot
Image
With a writers strike averted, the broadcast TV business’ attention — which had been divided for the past month between pilot production and WGA negotiations — is focusing squarely on the ongoing pilot season, now in its final stage heading into the May 15-18 upfronts. Pilots are being screened this week, followed by pickup and scheduling decisions that will be made over the next 10 days. Here is the latest edition of Deadline’s Pilot Buzz on where I hear the various pilots stand:

ABC’s needs may have changed significantly since it ordered 23 pilots — the most of any broadcast network — in January and early February. In the past few weeks, the network went aggressively after American Idol and is in final negotiations for a reboot, which would take up a lot of real estate on the midseason schedule, and it also is negotiating for the upcoming revival of the classic ABC sitcom Roseanne.

Cristela Alonzo To Star In ‘The Gospel Of Kevin’ ABC Light Drama Pilot
Image
Cristela co-creator and star Cristela Alonzo is returning to ABC as the female lead opposite Jason Ritter in ABC’s The Gospel of Kevin, an hourlong drama pilot from veteran showrunners Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters and ABC Studios.

Written/executive produced by Fazekas and Butters and directed by Paul McGuigan, The Gospel of Kevin is a light one-hour about Kevin (Ritter), a down-on-his-luck man who is tasked by God with a mission to save the world. Kevin is a cluelessly self-serving jerk who’s on a dangerous path to despair. After a failed suicide attempt, he’s going home to stay with his widowed twin sister and niece for a time, only to be met with a crisis in the person Yvette (Alonso). Tough-talking but not without compassion, a “source of luminescence” and clearly divine, Yvette is a “warrior for God,” who explains to Kevin that he’s been “tasked with a sacred mission.
