International Insider: Animated In Annecy; Warner Split; Sarandos In Spain
Image
Good afternoon Insiders, welcome to another newsletter after a busy old week during which many of us have been on the road. Do scroll down. And sign up here.

Animated In Annecy

Power of the craft: There’s no better way to remind yourself of the power of animation than to head to Annecy in June. The beautiful French city was transformed for the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, which has over the years taken on a Comic-Con-esque skew towards fandoms. With Simpsons creator Matt Groening, Bojack Horseman’s Raphael Bob-Waksberg and the likes of Bob’s Burgers director Tyree Dillihay in town, that’s no wonder. The vibe was phenomenal, and the hot, sunny weather, which positively shimmered across Lake Annecy, didn’t exactly hinder things. In the spotlight were a ream of big-budget upcoming projects including The Cat in the Hat, Bad Guys 2, Goat and Fixed, along...

Netflix to Invest $1 Billion-Plus in Spain Over Four Years as Part of Originals Push
Image
Netflix is doubling down on investing in Spain to keep producing Spanish originals, co-ceo Ted Sarandos said on Tuesday during a visit to Madrid to celebrate the streaming giant’s 10-year anniversary in the country.

Visiting Netflix’s hub in Tres Cantos, just outside Madrid, along with Pedro Sanchez, the president of Spain, the top executive said that Netflix would invest €1 billion ($1.1 billion) in the country by 2029.

Touting such Spanish hits as Elite and Society of the Snow, Sarandos shared that local originals generated more than 5 billion hours of global viewing on Netflix in 2024. Emphasizing the global streaming giant’s deep commitment to Spain, the co-ceo also said: “Dali masks, red jumpsuits, Bella Ciao – all of them have become instantly recognizable parts of the global culture.”

Indeed, Netflix’s Spanish hit originals have included the likes of Money Heist, its Berlin spin-off series, White Lines, and The Snow Girl.

Netflix is to invest €1bn in Spain over the next four years, according to the streamer’s co-ceo Ted Sarandos.

Sarandos announced the investment figure on a visit today to Netflix’s production hub Tres Cantos on the outskirts of Madrid to mark the streamer’s 10th anniversary in the country.

He was joined by the President of Spain, Pedro Sanchez and the Minister for Digital Transformation Oscar Lopez at Tres Cantos.

Spain has become a significant production base for Netflix. Sarandos said the streamer had produced more than 1,000 Spanish titles since 2017, flagging series such as its first Spanish original...

Netflix to Invest Over $1.2 Billion in Spain Over 2025-28
Image
Netflix announced Tuesday that it will invest over €1 billion ($1.14 billion) in Spain over 2025-28.

The commitment was made by Ted Sarandos, Netflix co-ceo, whose wide-ranging if brief speech at a press presentation Tuesday in Spain, held to mark Netflix’s first 10 years in the country.

Sarandos was accompanied by Diego Ávalos, Netflix VP of content, Spain, Portugal & Turkey, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez whose Spain Audiovisual Plan has channelled some €1.6 billion ($1.8 billion) into the sector.

The speech delivered by Sarandos covered Netflix’s achievements in Spain and key drivers to success, while praising Spanish “regulations that encourage creativity, innovative and long-term thinking” – an implicit slap on the wrists to other countries, such as France, where Netflix lodged in April an appeal with the country’s Council of State lambasting its windowing rules as the European Union debates possibly tougher quotas on streaming services.

The $1.2 billion investment is an example...

Netflix Fans Are Just Discovering This Hidden Crime Gem That Predates Stranger Things & Deserves Way More Hype!

Underrated Netflix Crime Show Before Stranger Things (Photo Credit – Netflix)

Before all the Demogorgons in Stranger Things, the deadly unhinged plays in Squid Games and the prison orange jumpsuits in Orange is the New Black, Netflix kicked things off with something completely unexpected. It was a fish out of water mobster tale set in snowy Norway.

While many assume House of Cards or Orange Is the New Black started it all, it was actually Lilyhammer that quietly opened the doors in 2012.

Lilyhammer: The First Netflix Original

This three-season crime drama flew under the radar for years. The show, led by The Sopranos’ Steven Van Zandt, was a collaboration between Netflix and Norway’s broadcaster Nrk which made it the streamer’s first global storytelling experiment.

Shaquille O’Neal reveals his Mount Rushmore: 4 Netflix series he says you can’t miss
Image
Looking for something on Netflix to watch, but it doesn't have to be a series that is a new one? Shaquille O'Neal, who does have a new series on your favorite streamer called Power Moves, has four ideas for you. He announced as much during a recent tweet.

One thing is certain: Shaq doesn't mind a little violence in his shows. Three of the four he names as his Mount Rushmore of Netflix Originals have a bunch of violence, and the fourth is not that far off.

So, take Shaq's suggestions, and give the shows a watch. They are all excellent, even if he did not care for them. They also give you something to binge-watch this weekend.

Shaq's Mount Rushmore of Netflix showsStranger Things

Of course, this one would be because it should be nearly everyone's, right? We have watched on the edge of our seats for four seasons...

France Embraces Spanish TV, But for How Long?

At France’s Series Mania in April, now firmly consolidated as Europe’s biggest TV festival, Spain scored a historic double, scooping its two top awards, Competition’s Grand Prize with “Querer” and its International Panorama major sidebar with “Celeste.”

Both “Querer” and “Celeste” were produced by Spain’s Movistar Plus+, “Celeste” along with The Mediapro Studio. Since Series Mania launched its International Panorama in 2018, no country, let alone the same company, has won its two biggest prizes in one and the same year.

In recent dealing, Arte France, the French leg of pan-European public broadcaster Arte, also co-produced Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s “The New Years” and acquired “Querer” and “La Mesías,” the biggest series to date from “Velvet” creators and Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo – “Los Javis.”

The largest platforms will converge in New York the week of May 12 to show off new content and put the hard sell on Madison Avenue for advertising commitments.

No matter who’s in and who’s out, upfronts week is still an annual mile marker and a time for every network to take stock. Below, Variety breaks down the hits, misses and needs of the major players as they tubthump their upcoming lineups.

Does TV Get a Free Pass in Trump’s Grand Tariff Plan to Save Hollywood?
Image
Trump’s plan to Make Hollywood Great Again by imposing a 100 percent tariff on “any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands” has left the industry with more questions than answers. Like: Huh? Or: Is this even legal? And our personal favorite: What about TV?

“We Want Movies Made In America, Again!” Trump ranted on Sunday evening. “The Movie Industry in America is Dying a very fast death. Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated. This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda!”

By Monday morning, Trump’s press liaison was already walking all of that back a bit.

“Although no final decisions...

Image
Cannes — Soo Hugh, the showrunner of “Pachinko,” is advancing on multiple projects with a view to co-producing with or shooting in Korea or teaming with a Korean partner, she told on the eve of France’s Canneseries TV festival where she is serving on the main jury and was the subject of a Meet With keynote on April 25.

The Korean connection seems only natural. Hugh first made a large impact with AMC’s 2018 supernatural survival thriller “The Terror” Season 1, co-showrun with David Kajganich and set in the Arctic over 1845-48.

She then garnered glowing reviews for Apple TV+’s “Pachinko,” a series made with extraordinary sweep tracing down the generations from 1915 Korea under Japanese thrall to 1989 Japan the story of a family of Zainichi – Koreans who lost everything under Japanese rule and were forced to emigrate to Japan as second-class citizens.

Both shows, says Hugh, became “crossroads filmmaking between America...

5 Clever Ways Productions Prevented Spoiler Leaks
Image
Ah, the duality of fan — you might be dying to know what happens next, but you may very well literally crucify anyone who tells you. Unable to care for themselves, it’s a franchise’s responsibility to protect fans, so they take increasingly elaborate and sneaky measures to prevent spoilers from leaking in the first place.

5 ‘The White Lotus’ Wrote Six Different Endings

An NDA and the promise of future gigs used to be enough to ensure that what happens on set stays on set, but apparently, much like its characters, the crew of The White Lotus cannot be trusted. As a result, the show’s writers distributed six different versions of the script for the Season Three finale, so if a Pa accidentally left one in a Starbucks bathroom, there was only a 15 percent chance it mattered.

Image
Lupin co-writer François Uzan went to great lengths to secure the authenticity of upcoming Netflix comedy Recalé.

The storied scribe revealed at Series Mania this afternoon that he went undercover in a French school, or lycée, in order to learn what makes modern teachers tick.

He described Recalé, which translates into English as “Failed,” as a “goofy infiltration comedy” about a teacher who infiltrates a mob. Starring Alexandre Kominek, Recalé is shooting at the moment in Lille, where Series Mania is taking place.

“I wanted to have some social roots for Recalé so I went undercover in a lycée in France,” said Uzan. “I told teachers that this will be about infiltration and [will be] goofy but when we see teachers on screen I want them to be realistic. So [the show] will talk about what it means to be a teacher right now, problems of budget, what it means to be on strike,...

Borja Cobeaga’s Malaga Title ‘Breaking Walls’ Offers Humorous Look at Fatherhood Amid ’80s Upheaval: ‘Comedy Is, for Me, a Revenge Against Reality’
Image
In the late 1980s, Bilbao’s working-class suburbs were a microcosm of newly democratic Spain’s broader socio-economic transformation. Amidst this, Borja Cobeaga’s upcoming comedy, “Breaking Walls” (“Los Aitas”), heads comedically into the evolution of fatherhood during this pivotal era. “Breaking Walls” is produced by Sayaka Producciones (“Colossal”), in collaboration with Inicia Films (“Glimmers”), Bteam Prods (“Schoolgirls”), and Despadres Aie. It follows a group of young gymnasts, all girls, whose fathers are “forced” to chaperone them on a trip to Berlin – a journey that coincides with the historic fall of the Berlin Wall. This road trip becomes a catalyst for these men to discover and redefine their roles as parents.

Cobeaga, collaborating with co-writer Valentina Viso (“Salve Maria”), grounds the film in the political, cultural and economic climate of the time. The opening features industrial stills of Bilbao, interspersed with references to the Pact of Ajuria Enea and the leadership of José Antonio Ardanza.

Malaga Festival Opening Film, Daniel Guzmán’s ‘The Redemption,’ Swooped on by Film Factory (Exclusive)
Image
Film Factory Entertainment has acquired worldwide sales rights to Daniel Guzmán’s “The Redemption,” starring Guzmán, “Money Heist’s” Itziar Ituño, Susana Abaitua who headed Netflix hit “Crazy About You” and Luis Tosar, co-star of “Undercover,” the second highest-grossing Spanish film of 2024.

Packing a top-notch Spanish cast, “The Redemption,” (“La Deuda”) opens Spain’s Malaga Festival this March 14 with a drama tensed by large thriller elements from the near get-go.

The third feature from Guzmán, an actor who burst on the scene as a scribe-helmer with his 2015 debut “Nothing in Return” which scored Spanish Academy Goyas for new director and breakout actor (Miguel Herrán), “The Redemption” also delivers multiple Guzmán auteurist traits: Heartfelt sentiment, the belief in bedrock found-family relations, social issue reference and a sympathy for the downtrodden.

Here, Lucas, 47, and Antonia, over 90 but still vital, share Antonia’s central city apartment. Despite Lucas’ being out of work, they...
