A ‘Yellowstone’ Star Joins Netflix’s ‘True Detective’ Reunion
Image
Netflix is hosting a True Detective reunion, and a Yellowstone star has just joined the fun. Matthew McConaughey and Cole Hauser will star in a new series at the streamer created by Nic Pizzolatto. According to reports, the untitled series is being referred to internally as "The Brothers Project," as McConaughey and Hauser, who both starred in 1993's Dazed and Confused, will play a pair of siblings. Everything else about the series is being kept under wraps for now, although as it...

Sing! Star Reveals the Studio Didn't Want Him Back for the Sequel
Image
One star of the original Sing movie recently revealed why the studio did not want him back for the 2021 sequel. The fan-favorite animated comedy series of films, which comes from Despicable Me and The Super Mario Movie studio Illumination Entertainment, tells the tale of a musical world of singing animals who must come together for an X-Factor-like singing competition to save main character Buster Moon's family theater.

Both Sing movies have star-studded casts, including Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, and Scarlett Johansson. While most of this animated ensemble made the jump over to Sing 2, it was notably missing Seth McFarlane as Mike the Mouse, an arrogant street-singing white mouse based on Frank Sinatra.

'The Bad Guys 2' Earns Criminally Good Audiences Ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and CinemaScore
Image
Even though practically every other kind of movie was underperforming at the box office a few years ago, animated films were doing dependably well. Minions: The Rise of Gru nearly grossed $1 billion worldwide in 2022, while Sing 2 made over $400 million globally in 2021. Among these hits was DreamWorks' The Bad Guys, a heist comedy film directed by Pierre Perifel, which made exactly $250 million globally and nearly $100 million at the domestic box office. DreamWorks has now released a follow-up to the movie, which is looking at an identical opening weekend haul after earning excellent reviews from both critics and audiences.

The Bad Guys 2 debuted alongside the comedy reboot The Naked Gun and the body horror film Together. All three films earned positive reviews, with The Bad Guys 2 currently sitting at an 84% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The film's audience score on Rt is even higher, at a near-perfect...

10 Hollywood Icons You Won’t Believe Have Never Worked Together
Image
You’d think with all the movies Hollywood churns out, from shared universes and franchises to awards baits and indie darlings, every major star would’ve crossed paths by now. But no. Some of the biggest names in the game are yet to share the camera frame. And it’s not just random pairings, either; we’re talking Oscar winners, blockbuster royalty, and red-carpet regulars—people who practically orbit the same directors, genres, and studios.

Whether it’s due to timing, typecasting, or just plain bad luck, these Hollywood icons have never collaborated. Not in a lead role, not in a cameo, not even in one of those 200-person ensemble casts.

Some will have you nodding like, “Yeah, weird they haven’t,” but others? You’ll probably Google it just to double-check. However, we have already done it for you. Here it is: the ultimate list of cinematic what-ifs of...

Smoke TV Review: Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett lead Dennis Lehane’s true crime-inspired thriller
Image
Plot: Inspired by true events, “Smoke” follows a troubled detective and an enigmatic arson investigator as they pursue the trials of two serial arsonists.

Review: The 2023 Apple TV+ limited series Black Bird presented a true crime drama with stellar performances from Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser. Created by acclaimed novelist Dennis Lehane, the series fostered a creative partnership that has led to the new series, Smoke. With Lehane as showrunner and Egerton in the lead alongside Jurnee Smollett, Smoke draws inspiration from the true crime podcast Firebug but expands into an original narrative about dueling arsonists wreaking havoc in the Pacific Northwest while former firefighter Dave Gudsen (Taron Egerton) and detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) try to apprehend the criminals. It is a fascinating drama that draws on Lehane’s skill at chronicling cops and killers, mixed with multiple intricate characters. Smoke is a character study of the highest order,...

Gerard Butler Action Thriller 'Plane' Tops Streaming Charts
Image
Plane, the 2023 action thriller starring Gerard Butler and Mike Colter, is sky-high on the streaming charts again. At the time of writing, the movie had soared past its competition, which included the likes of The Wild Robot, Sing 2, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 to land the #1 spot on Peacock's Top 10 in the United States, per FlixPatrol. It seems that more and more people are getting on board with Plane as it previously took flight on Starz at the start of the year, proving that there is an audience for its sequel.

The movie was first released in theaters on Jan. 13, 2023, and two years on, Plane is still captivating audiences with its white-knuckle adventure, only this time it's on the small screen. The story is one of survival and suspense, as it sees a commercial pilot (Butler's Brodie Torrance) find an unexpected ally in a...

Gerard Butler’s $74.5 Million Action Thriller Tops Streaming Charts 2 Years Later
Image
Though his work is wide-ranging, a huge part of Gerard Butler's career has revolved around action films. After appearing in a period piece for his debut film, he played a supporting role in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies in 1997. Since then, he has been in multiple other action movies, including Olympus Has Fallen and Kandahar. Some of his action films have fallen into the climate survival subgenre, including both Greenland and Geostorm, the former of which has a sequel, Greenland: Migration, scheduled for this year.

One of Butler's biggest action franchises as a leading star is the Den of Thieves movies. Most recently, the franchise saw the release of its second installment, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. The movie grossed $56.7 million worldwide, making it the no. 5 highest-grossing movie of the year so far. Pantera received decent reviews, which was positive enough to warrant the development of a third film.

Matthew McConaughey on Returning to Acting After a Six-Year Hiatus With ‘The Rivals of Amziah King’ and Why His Season of ‘True Detective’ Is the Best
Image
On the first day shooting “The Rivals of Amziah King,” Matthew McConaughey, his right eye swollen from a bee sting, walked onto the set, raised his hand and asked, “Is anybody else nervous except for me?”

The cast and crew let out a collective laugh. “Alright, alright, alright, I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t the only one,” the actor said, sounding like a mixture of a preacher and a surfer with his signature drawl.

But McConaughey wasn’t joking. He admits he felt creaky returning to the screen after a six-year hiatus, during which he wrote a memoir, “Greenlights,” recorded a few voice roles in films like “Sing 2,” spent time with his family and kept a lower profile. “I needed to write my own story, direct my own story on the page,” McConaughey says of his time away from being in front of the camera.

Why The 2025 Oscars Announcer Sounds So Familiar
Image
It's Hollywood's biggest night! The 2025 Oscars are happening as I type these words and, quite possibly, as you're reading them. The awards are being handed out and all of the expectations, surprises, and great moments that come along with the Academy Awards are unfolding. We've got a full list of Oscar winners for you to check out right here. Conan O'Brien is hosting this year's ceremony, with a number of different presenters taking the stage. But who is the announcer for tonight's event? And why does he sound so familiar?

That voice you're hearing between awards and heading into commercial breaks belongs to none other than Nick Offerman. Many viewers probably know him best as Ron Swanson from the beloved sitcom "Parks and Recreation." His voice is distinct, to say the least, and those who put together the ceremony decided that he would be the right man to help add...

The Oscars Cheer Moment | An ode to the Academy’s two strangest awards
John Bailey
As we prepare for the 97th Academy Awards this weekend, here’s a reminder of the Oscars Cheer Moment, and the weirdest year in the body’s history.

On Valentine’s Day 2022, the American Academy of Motion Pictures unveiled a pair of awards so prestigious they could only be accurately communicated via hashtag.

#OscarsFanFavorite and #OscarsCheerMoment were the latest in a string of attempts from the world’s most famous awards body to stay popular and relevant. The last was in 2018 when, in an attempt to reverse the ratings freefall the ceremony had found itself in over the last decade, Film Academy president John Bailey proposed an official Popular Film category – the first new competition since Best Animated Film in 2001.

Months later, the award was slipped quietly into the organisation’s back pocket, after Academy members and the public at large united to declare the idea a silly one. Making a popular film,...

Scarlett Johansson May Just Leave Robert Downey Jr. Behind With Her Juicy Roles Outside of MCU After Quitting Avengers

Remember when Natasha Romanoff sacrificed herself for the Soul Stone and made entire theatres cry? It was the end of an era, especially for those who have been loving the badass Avenger since her first appearance in Iron Man 2. Even though Scarlett Johansson “returned” to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Black Widow, it was melancholic for her fans to watch knowing that the film was set before the events of Avengers: Endgame.

SNL Cast Members' Movie Becomes Surprise Streaming Success 2 Years After Release
Image
A comedy movie starring and written by multiple Saturday Night Live cast members has suddenly become a streaming success over a year after its release. Since its debut in 1975, NBC's long-running sketch comedy show has served as the springboard for 11 feature-length films based on some of the show's most popular sketches and characters, which have seen mixed success. Their first foray into film came in 1980 with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi's The Blues Brothers, which earned over $115 million at the box office against its $27 million budget.

The success of Wayne's World in 1992, starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, encouraged Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michael to produce more film adaptations featuring popular characters. He brought back 1970s characters for Coneheads in 1993, followed by It's Pat, Stuart Saves His Family, A Night at the Roxbury, Superstar, and The Ladies Man. However, most of these movies struggled both critically and commercially,...

Every Song In Sing 2 Ranked Worst To Best
Image
There are a lot of pop and rock songs performed in Sing 2, but not every song in the animated movie can be the best. After the success of their talent show in Sing, Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) and his crew of performers—Johnny (Taron Egerton), Rosita (Reese Witherspoon), Meena (Tori Kelly), Ash (Scarlett Johansson), Gunter (Nick Kroll), and more—are moving on to the big leagues. When Buster lies to the hotheaded entertainment mogul Mr. Crystal (Bobby Cannavale) about the great, reclusive Clay Calloway (Bono) signing on to their show, the crew ends up in hot water as they attempt to score the high-profile artist to turn their lies into reality.

Like its predecessor, Sing 2 is packed with musical numbers from a variety of genres, all performed by a misfit group of animals. From Dionne Warwick classics to Ariana Grande hits, there's sure to be a song for all musical tastes.

The 15 Best Movies Like Sing 2

Along with the first movie in the animated franchise, there are plenty of movies like Sing 2 that capture the same magic that makes the family-friendly sequel such a gem. The movie is an entertaining bit of fun for all ages, continuing the winning combination of popular music and adorable animal characters. The Rock's Forgotten Video Game Adaptation Is Finding Free Streaming Success Six Years Later
Image
Red One has Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson back in our theaters in a Christmas romp alongside the likes of Chris Evans and Michael Keaton. Currently, Red One has earned just shy of $125 million worldwide, which pales in comparison to many of The Rock's other projects. One such project it struggles to compete with is 2018's Rampage, a forgotten addition to Johnson's filmography that saw him star alongside Naomie Harris in a jungle adventure epic. Currently, Rampage is fourth in Freevee's top 10, joining the likes of Sing 2 and Charlotte's Web in the top 5.

New ‘Wicked’ Promo Shows Ariana Grande And Cynthia Erivo Reacting To Being Cast As Leads By Director Jon M. Chu
Image
A new promotion for Wicked turns back the clock to 2021 to show co-stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo reacting to being cast as the film’s co-leads by director Jon M. Chu.

The longform spot, titled “Connect to Your Dreams,” is a plug for the movie as well as distributor Universal Pictures parent Comcast’s Xfinity broadband, mobile and pay-tv services. In recent years, long-form Xfinity ads have featured a quasi-sequel to E.T., Steve Carell as a Covid-challenged Santa Claus; and an Illumination-animated spinoff of Sing 2. Usually, the promos debut just before NBC’s coverage of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, but the November 22 bow for Wicked accelerated the usual timeline.

The new spot is directed by Alice Brooks, Wicked’s director of photography, in collaboration with Chu. It tells a condensed story of both lead actresses reaching for their dreams from childhood to the Wicked shoot.

$885.3M Animated Movie Returns To Netflix Top 10 3 Years Later
Image
An animated movie that made $885.3 million at the box office when it was first released has returned to Netflix's Top 10 movies chart three years later. Netflix has always had plenty of success stories for theatrical animated features, as they have consistently had major streaks in the Top 10 in recent years. One recent example is 2016's Sing, which has maintained a six-week streak despite nearly falling off at one point. Another major example is The Boss Baby, which has snagged a place on the list 16 times since 2023.

One particular studio that has continually had success on Netflix is movies by Illumination, whose major box office hits have consistently managed to appear in the Top 10. One major example is 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which has managed to land on the list 20 times since the film first debuted on the platform. Other success stories include Minions landing on the list for 10 weeks,...

$634 Million Animated Movie Climbs Back Up Netflix Global Chart Just When It Looked Like It Would Fall
Image
An animated movie that was a $600 million hit in theaters and then found success again on streaming, has risen back up the Netflix global chart at the moment it looked like it was about to fall from the Top 10. This combined success is a divergence from a modern trend, as in recent years, animation has had a complicated relationship with the box office and with streaming. The theatrical success of animated releases, even from major companies such as Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, has become increasingly difficult to predict.

For instance, Disney's Encanto likely failed to turn a profit in theaters, grossing $261.3 million against a roughly $150 million budget, but its Disney+ release made it a smash, sending the song "We Don't Talk About Bruno" to the top of the charts. Meanwhile, other titles have debuted with low to middling opening weekends but proved to be sleeper hits, including 2023's...

Netflix & Universal Renew Animation Licensing Deal, Adding Live-Action Titles In 2027; Peacock Pay-1 Intact
Image
Netflix and Universal have renewed their licensing deal for animated films, including Illumination and DreamWorks titles, adding U.S. rights to live-action Universal and Focus releases starting in 2027.

Universal Filmed Entertainment Group releases will continue to have their pay-1 release window on Peacock, in keeping with a key strategic objective over the past couple of years at NBCUniversal. But the longer tail of animated films on Netflix, especially durable ones like Sing, has been good business for both companies and will continue under the new agreement.

The pact gives Netflix exclusive rights to the titles no later than eight months following theatrical release. After the initial premiere on Peacock, Netflix will have a 10-month window during which these films are available only on Netflix before they return to Peacock. Netflix will also license rights to Universal’s full animation and live-action film slate for additional windows in subsequent years as...

Image
Netflix customers will be able to add even more Universal movies to their queue with the studio’s live-action titles coming to the streamer in the U.S. starting with the 2027 slate.

Netflix and NBCUniversal’s Universal Filmed Entertainment Group announced a deal to renew their existing licensing deal for animated films from Illumination and DreamWorks Animation. Now, beginning with the 2027 slate, Netflix will have U.S. rights to live-action films from both Universal Pictures and Focus Features “no later than eight months” following their theatrical release.

After the Universal films’ initial premiere on NBCU’s Peacock, Netflix will have a 10-month window during which these films are available only on Netflix — before they return to Peacock. Netflix will also license rights to Universal’s full animation and live-action film slate for additional windows in subsequent years as well as rights to select titles from Universal’s film library, the companies said.

2 Years After Its First Season, This 88% Fresh British Comedy Just Recruited a Brooklyn 99 Fan Favorite
Image
A praiseworthy score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes is reason enough to bring back a second season of the British black comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? Written by and starring Daisy Cooper and Selin Hizli, the show is a beautifully dark concoction of betrayal, female friendship, family and unfiltered honesty. Cooper and Hizli met at drama school, although their friendship didn't get off to the best start. Hizli told The Independent that Cooper compared her to Lily Allen for her arrogance. Evidently, the two got over their differences, and TV is all the better for it.

It's hard to think of much that could've been added (or taken away) from their series to make it any better. The laughs were in the right place, the twists took everyone by surprise and the darker moments left viewers a little creeped-out. Season 2 is due to come out next year with, hopefully, the same...

Directed by Garth Jennings, and produced by Chris Meledandri, this is one party you won’t want to miss.

“I don’t know if it is possible to enjoy making anything as much as I have done while working on Sing: Thriller,” Jennings tells Tudum. “Our awesome cast and team of geniuses at...

The “Sing” gang is returning, but probably not in the way you’d expect.

NBCUniversal’s Animated Films Are Blowing Up on the Streamer It Doesn’t Own
Image
NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock had a big July and a massive August thanks almost exclusively to the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. Netflix had an equally massive January-to-June, in part because of all NBCUniversal’s animated movies available on the streamer.

In case you’ve been living under a mountain of other Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, on Thursday, September 19, Netflix shared more than 16,000 lines of its viewership data from the first half of 2024. It lists every show or movie watched on Netflix around the globe, how many views each had, and for how many hours they were watched. Light reading material for us.

Twice a year, there are endless takeaways from Netflix’s data dump. One of the big ones from this set was just how dominant NBCUniversal’s animated films are — only not on NBCUniversal’s own streaming platform, Peacock.

The top six animated films (and nine of 10!) on Netflix over...

Where Can I Watch Sing Online Is It Streaming On Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Or Hulu?
Image
There are a few options for those who want to watch Sing online, but probably not as many opportunities as fans would hope. The 2016 animated jukebox musical Sing comes from Illumination Entertainment and features some of the best characters Illumination has brought to the screen. Sing is set in a world of anthropomorphic animals and follows Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey), a koala who has to come up with a way to save his struggling theater. His idea is to host a talent show to prevent foreclosure, but the competition leads to problems of its own.

The cast of Sing includes an ensemble of award-winning actors and talented singers. Among them are, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Taron Egerton, and more. Sing earned $634 million at the box office (via BoxOfficeMojo) and has a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. It led to a sequel, Sing 2, in 2021, and there are plans for a Sing 3.
