‘I Love My Dad’ Star James Morosini on Making Out With Patton Oswalt: ‘He’s a Phenomenal Kisser’
Image
“I Love My Dad” director, writer and star James Morosini kiss and tells about how he prepared for his bizarre makeout scenes with co-star Patton Oswalt.

“We made out a lot ahead of time,” Morosini, who plays Oswalt’s son Franklin, told Variety jokingly at the premiere of “I Love My Dad” at the Largo at the Coronet on Thursday night. “He’s a phenomenal kisser. I hope everyone has the opportunity to make out with Patton Oswalt.”

Based on Morosini’s own true experience of being catfished by his dad, the new indie comedy stars Patton Oswalt as Chuck, a father who desperately tries to stay connected with his estranged son by posing as a woman online named Becca (Claudia Sulewski). During a scene where Franklin (Morosini) asks “Becca” if he can pretend to kiss her through their messages, Chuck pictures the disturbing scenario of his son actually making...

How James Morosini Turned Being Catfished by His Father Into New Film ‘I Love My Dad’
Image
James Morosini really does love his dad, and he proves it when his father calls in the midst of our conversation. Morosini takes the call and explains he’s on an interview. “I’ll call you back,” the younger Morosini says before adding: “Love you.”

The complicated father-son relationship inspired Morosini’s acclaimed new film, “I Love My Dad,” which hits theaters this week and arrives on VOD Aug. 12 after winning both the grand jury prize and audience award at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival. Patton Oswalt stars as Chuck, a man who is cut off by his son Franklin (played by Morosini) and creates a social media profile based on a waitress he knows, Becca (Claudia Sulewski.) Though Chuck is just trying to connect with Franklin, his son ends up falling hard for Becca – and Chuck goes to increasingly elaborate lengths to keep up the ruse.

‘I Love My Dad’ Review: Patton Oswalt Plays a Serial Liar Who Catfishes His Own Son
Image
While putting his life back together following a suicide attempt, an unstable young man named Franklin (James Morosini) meets a girl online who starts to make him feel better. Her name is Becca, she’s way prettier than he thinks he deserves, and she seems really interested in him. How or why this person chose Franklin, out of all the incels on Facebook, doesn’t amount to a hill of beans. Life seems to be looking up, and yet Franklin’s right to be skeptical. Because he is being catfished. By his father.

Writer-director-star Morosini’s funny, cringey, all-too-credible dramedy “I Love You Dad” really happened. “My dad asked me to tell you it didn’t,” claims an onscreen chyron at the outset, but it’s too good a story to pass up. And no matter how upset Morosini must have been to discover the deception at the time, his...

SXSW Review: Patton Oswalt In James Morosini’s ‘I Love My Dad’
Image
I Love My Dad is a sort-of Cyrano for the internet age, a scabrous comedy of embarrassment and bad parenting. After his micro-budgeted 2018 directorial debut with the little seen-Threesomething, writer-director-co-star James Morosini returns with a swiftly paced second feature that provokes plenty of laughs, often at the expense of its hapless characters. But what viewers will remember most here is Patton Oswalt in a genuine starring role that’s a strong candidate for worst dad of the decade.

This is a slick comedy of discomfort, some of it quite extreme, and the prime instigator is Oswalt’s Chuck, a middle-aged, out-of-shape, fast-talking screw-up who has not exactly provided a swell role model for his son Franklin (Morosini). Time-outs are usually assigned to children, but in this family’s case the culprit is invariably the dad, a fast-talker and videogame freak who’s always full of excuses as to why...
