    Started off well but...

Leaves one in the dark because of its plot holes and lack of story.

fascinating glimpse of a different culture

You have to ignore certain technical flaws like the audio and dialog changing levels and quality between scenes. It's a pretty convoluted plot with much switching between time periods - some old, semi mythical times (though not that old since a Christian priest is involved), and modern times. The modern characters include policemen and gangsters as well as an anthropologist, so the plotting reflects that, while the older story is all about chiefs, princesses, queens, shamen, demons and outcasts and revolves around tribal loyalties and marriage arrangements. However the belief in spirits, curses, gods, destiny, reincarnation and the like cuts across both cultural periods. I thought it was worth persevering to see how the dark, gothic tale played out in an unfamiliar (to me) culture strongly rooted in its past.
