Before Bong Joon-Ho’s “Parasite” swept the 2020 Academy Awards, Cj Entertainment, the South Korean production and distribution company behind the film, were not planning such a big entry into the Hollywood mainstream. In fact, prior to this success, they were trying to shop a potential English-language remake of the 2003 Korean cult favorite “Save the Green Planet!” on an indie scale similar to the original. As reported on by The Hollywood Reporter, while speaking at the 2024 Busan International Film Festival at a forum on Navigating the New Paradigm, head of Cj Enm’s film division, Jerry Ko admitted that despite trying carry on the homespun spirit of the original, attaching talent like Yorgos Lanthimos, Ari Aster, Emma Stone, and Jesse Plemons has ballooned the project, now retitled “Bugonia,” into something bigger than he ever expected.

When Cj Entertainment, the production team behind Jang Joon-hwan’s Save the Green Planet, got the idea of remaking the 2003 cult Korean sci-fi comedy, they didn’t expect it to get so big.
This was before the release of Bong Joon-ho’s multi-Oscar winner Parasite, before Korean cinema exploded worldwide and before Cj Entertainment became one of the biggest global production outfits with its 2022 acquisition of Endeavor Content (now Fifth Season).
“[Cj Enm] was sort of an unknown production company from a marginalized place then,” said Jerry Jerry Ko, head of Cj Enm’s film division, speaking at a forum on Navigating the New Paradigm at the 2024 Busan International Film Festival.
“We started out with the belief that the film’s concept was ahead of its time and that [maybe we] could make an indie movie, but as we traveled around Hollywood, we realized that there were many hidden fans of the original film.

Yoon and other executives from the group tried to sound optimistic about the long-term future of the business, while acknowledging severe near term headwinds.
Yoon identified the challenges as including ongoing weakness of theatrical box office in Korea (and elsewhere), changes within the streaming sector, an audience shift towards consumption of short form video and potential disruption from artificial intelligence.

“Fabricated City” is Park Kwang-Hyun’s long overdue follow-up to his smash hit and award winning 2005 war comedy “Welcome to Dongmakgol,” which on its release was the fourth highest grossing film in South Korean film history, coming second at the box office that year just behind Lee Joon-ik’s “The King and the Clown.”
“Fabricated City” screened at the New York Asian Film Festival
Just his third film, “Fabricated City” keeps the humour of “Welcome to Dongmakgol” but trades the war time setting for a contemporary one, and the conflict between North and South Korea for that between youth and adults. The protagonist, Kwon Yoo (Ji Chang-wook), spends his days playing online video games at an internet cafe (baang) as the leader of a virtual team combat unit named Resurrection. In his online life, Kwon is a hero, placing his avatar at risk in order to save his virtual army.
