Orville Peck will make his Broadway debut in Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, replacing Adam Lambert as Emcee. Eva Noblezada will join Peck as the show’s Sally Bowles, replacing Auli‘i Cravalho. Cravalho and Lambert will hold their final performances March 29.

“The Emcee has been my dream role since I was a teenager,” Peck said in a statement. “The nature of the character allows for complete freedom of individual expression. It can be portrayed through such a vast range of emotions, perspectives, and performance styles. That kind of freedom is every actor’s dream.

Very sad news. The BBC has cancelled The Goes Wrong Show. For anybody who hasn’t had the pleasure, the show – created and written by Jonathan Sayer, Henry Lewis and Henry Shields, who are also part of the onscreen ensemble – follows the misadventures of the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society, an amateur theatre troupe who attempt to stage a different play each week in front of a studio audience, but are woefully unsuited to the task.

From malapropisms to slapstick, egocentric fights between actors, physical comedy and stunts, Sayer, Lewis and Shields wring every possible gag out of the premise, heightened by the bravura comic acting of the Mischief Theatre ensemble – Charlie Russell, Dave Hearn, Bryony Corrigan, Nancy Zamit, Chris Leask, Greg Tannahill and Ellie Morris.

Peter Pan Goes Wrong, the latest stage farce from UK’s acclaimed Mischief theater troupe, has extended its run on Broadway for two weeks ahead of a move to Los Angeles in August.

The play now runs on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre through July 23, rather than the previously announced July 9. Peter Pan Goes Wrong begins performances in Los Angeles at the Ahmanson Theatre on August 8, running through September 10.

“We are having an absolutely terrific time sharing our very silly take on Peter Pan with New York audiences and are thrilled to be extending on Broadway because we still have several pizza joints left to try,” said writers Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields in a statement.

Although the production was shut out of the Tony Award nominations, it did get award nominations from the Outer Critics Circle, the Drama Desk and the Drama League.

Perhaps last week’s Tony Award nominations started paying off at the box office quicker than expected, at least for a few productions: Figures for last week, while down overall, indicate a nice bump upwards for Some Like It Hot, Shucked, Summer, 1976 and Good Night, Oscar.

Some Like It Hot, the musical adaptation of the 1959 film classic that scored 13 nominations on May 2 (the most of any production) saw a box office jump of $115,448 to $876,193, while Shucked, with nine nominations, was up $69,529 to a best-ever $620,075.

Good Night, Oscar, with three nominations including one for star Sean Hayes, was up by $62,130 to $702,454, while Summer, 1976, with a single nomination (for co-star Jessica Hecht), was up $76,906 to $451,360.

New musical New York, New York, with nine nominations, was up $75,728, breaking the $1M mark at $1,019,121.

Still, last week’s nominations could only go so far in boosting business, at least initially: None of the aforementioned productions hit the 90% capacity mark,...

For the first time in the 76-year history of the Tony Awards, three Pulitzer Prize-winning original dramas have been nominated in the Best Play category in the same year. Only five of the 17 new plays from the 2022-2023 season made the cut in the extraordinarily competitive race, and three of the five had previously received the prestigious honor of the Pulitzer: James Ijames’ “Fat Ham,” Stephen Adly Guirgis’ “Between Riverside and Crazy,” and Martyna Majok’s “Cost of Living.”

This historic result was not a guarantee. Indeed, according to our final official odds, only two of the plays were anticipated to break through: “Fat Ham,” which ultimately nabbed five nominations, and “Between Riverside and Crazy,” which landed two. “Cost of Living,” which closed back in November, was ranked seventh, but its odds were bolstered by three of our Editors and two of our Experts correctly predicting it to break through.

With 38 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2023 Tony nominations snubs was “Life of Pi” for Best Play. The production earned nine Olivier Award nominations across the pond, winning Best New Play, Actor (Hiran Abeysekera), Featured Actor, Lighting Design and Set Design. But at the Tonys, it missed out on a Best Play bid and didn’t score a nomination for Abeysekera. The production did perform well in the design categories, though, earning five nominations including for director Max Webster.

With the announcement of the Tony Awards nominations on May 2, we now know the shows and performers in contention for the 76th annual ceremony. The 40 members of the Tony nominating committee recognized 27 of the 38 eligible productions across 26 competitive categories.

A new stage adaptation of the 1959 film “Some Like It Hot” leads all productions with 13 nominations. That tally includes a nomination for the top honor of Best Musical and four bids for its performers, Christian Borle, J. Harrison Ghee, Kevin Del Aguila, and NaTasha Yvette Williams. The Tony Awards Administration Committee met on April 28, for the third and final time during the 2022-2023 Broadway season, to discuss the eligibility of 11 productions for the 76th Annual Tony Awards. This year’s ceremony will be held at the United Palace in Washington Heights, and will broadcast live on Sunday, June 11, 2023, on the CBS Television Network, and stream live and on demand on Paramount+. The Tony Awards are presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.

Angelina Jolie brought 21-year-old son Maddox Jolie-Pitt as her date to the White House state dinner in Washington DC on April 26. The pair arrived arm in arm to the soirée, which President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden hosted for South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. Jolie looked ethereal in a breezy white gown, matching blazer, and gold accessories, while Maddox looked sharp in a black suit and tie. The outing was a rare public appearance for Jolie and her eldest child, who studied at Yonsei University in Seoul and worked on the crew for Jolie's upcoming movie "Without Blood."

The Outer Critics Circle (Occ), the official organization of writers on New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers and national publications, today announced the nominees for the 72nd Annual Outer Critics Circle Awards, honoring the 2022-2023 Broadway and Off-Broadway season.

“New York, New York” received a major backing from this announcement, which coincides with the production’s opening night. The new musical with songs from John Kander, the late Fred Ebb and Lin-Manuel Miranda earned a whopping 12 nominations, the most of any production. “Some Like it Hot” trails just behind it with 10 nominations. The most nominated plays of the season are the Off-Broadway sensation “Downstate” and Broadway epic “Leopoldstadt,” both with six nominations apiece.

This is the first season with newly reconstructed acting categories, which have removed gender specifications, and have been expanded to separately include off-Broadway performers. In the previous configuration, actors in Broadway and off-Broadway productions competed in the same category.

A Phantom-less Broadway took a hit at the box office last week, dropping about 18% in total receipts from the previous week when Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masked singer had contributed $3.7 million in its final week.

With The Phantom of the Opera gone, another long-runner took the top box office spot: The Lion King grossed $2,165,365 for the week ending April 23. Hamilton came in second with $1,946,309 and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street was #3 with $1,823,700.

Update: Neil Patrick Harris has extended his guest star run in Broadway’s hit comedy Peter Pan Goes Wrong by one week.

Harris will now appear in the role of Francis/The Narrator through Sunday, May 7. The play, from the UK comedy troupe Mischef (The Play That Goes Wrong), opened last week at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre to strong reviews and good business.

Peter Pan producers have indicated that the Francis/Narrator role will occasionally be played by other guest stars following Harris’ departure.

Previous, April 3: Neil Patrick Harris will take to the Broadway stage as a special guest star in Peter Pan Goes Wrong, producers announced today.

The latest impeccable demonstration of disaster-farce concocted and performed by Britain’s gift-to-the-world Mischief Theatre, Peter Pan Goes Wrong currently guest stars Neil Patrick Harris, who fits in so well with the ensemble that he seems like just another one of the gang. That’s high praise for both.

Opening tonight at Broadway’s Ethel Barrymore Theatre, Peter Pan Goes Wrong proves that Mischief’s immensely popular The Play That Goes Wrong – which opened on Broadway in 2017 and remains in New York at the New World Stages Off Broadway – was no fluke. Indeed, Mischief seems to have accomplished on the stage what many a film studio has done on the screen: built a franchise.

The Phantom of the Opera, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical that closed its Broadway run on Sunday after 35 years, went out on a very high note: Box office receipts for the show’s final week hit a best-ever $3,739,934.

Playing, of course, to standing room only audiences at longtime venue the Majestic Theatre, Phantom commanded a hefty $287 average ticket price during its home stretch week (Sunday’s final performance was invitation-only and heavily comped).

Among the shows of a more recent vintage, Peter Pan Goes Wrong, the latest comedy from the Mischief theater company folks, took in $903,540, a startlingly strong figure for a new non-musical play. The combination of Mischief’s reputation (the troupe was behind the very popular The Play That Goes Wrong) and current guest star Neil Patrick Harris (he’s on board until April 30) proved irresistible to ticket-buyers, who paid an average $113.67 per ticket and filled 95% of seats at the Ethel Barrymore.

The Phantom of the Opera went out on a high in its final week of performances on Broadway, bringing in an all-time record of $3.7 million.

The musical, which had been running on Broadway for 35 years, played its final performance on April 16, in an evening of celebration and spectacle with a red carpet, appearances by original cast members, Lloyd Webber and producer Cameron Mackintosh and an after party. In its final week, the show played to a capacity of 101.46 percent, with its average ticket price hitting $287.07.

These numbers were reached even as the tickets to the final performance were all given away for free. The proceeds from the show’s April 13 performance were donated to four New York City Arts organizations.

The musical had been playing the Majestic Theatre since January 1988, and was the longest running show in Broadway history. After first announcing that the Broadway production would end its run on Feb.

We’re now about halfway through the 2022-23 Broadway season, and there are currently nine productions of plays set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tony Awards? “Pictures From Home” (opens February 9; closes April 30)

This stage adaptation of Larry Sultan’s 1992 photo memoir is a comic and dramatic portrait of a mother and father, and the son who photographed their lives. As Larry tries to capture his parents, their reality explodes from the frame in an exploration of the power of art and how much it reveals.

Adapted for the stage by WGA nominee Sharr White, the production stars Tony winner Danny Burstein, three-time Tony winner Nathan Lane, and four-time Tony nominee Zoë Wanamaker.

Peter Pan Goes Wrong, the Olivier Award-nominated comedy from the creators of the Tony-winning The Play That Goes Wrong, will make its Broadway premiere this spring.

Beginning previews at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on March 17, Peter Pan Goes Wrong opens April 19 for a limited engagement.

Co-written by company members of the UK comedy and stage troupe Mischief, Peter Pan Goes Wrong debuted at the Pleasance Theatre in London in December 2013, and, following a 2014 UK tour, transferred to the West End’s Apollo Theatre for a Christmas season run in 2015. Lionsgate-backed comedy The Goes Wrong Show has been renewed by the BBC for a second season.

The series, produced by Mum producer Big Talk Productions and Mischief Screen, is based on the latter’s eponymous play from the team behind Peter Pan Goes Wrong and A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong.

The first season followed the Cornley Drama Society undertaking another overly ambitious endeavour, held back by prolific over-actor Robert Grove, the screen-hogging Sandra Wilkinson and the artistically mistrusted Dennis Tyde. The half-hour episodes are described as “theatrical catastrophe”.

The Goes Wrong Show is written by and stars the original founding Mischief Theatre members including Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields alongside Nancy Zamit, Charlie Russell, Bryony Corrigan, Greg Tannahill, Dave Hearn and Chris Leask. It is filmed in front of a live studio audience.

Lionsgate sells internationally in a deal similar to its arrangement for Sharon Horgan-penned Motherland.

The BBC has greenlit “The Goes Wrong Show,” a new series based on Mischief Theatre’s popular “The Play That Goes Wrong” stage production about a troupe that puts on disastrous plays.

The stage show has transferred from London’s West End to Broadway for a J.J. Abrams-produced version described by Variety as “a broad, silly and deliciously demented show, about a fictitious amateur theatrical group.”

The physical theater set-up has been brought to TV before with BBC specials “Peter Pan Goes Wrong” and “A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong.” Mischief Theatre members Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, Henry Shields are on board the new series and will write and star in the six-parter.

Each episode will take on a well-known genre such as courtroom drama or spy thriller. It will be filmed in front of a live audience this March, in Manchester.

Our priorities first: Peter Capaldi’s outgoing Doctor Who episode in the leading role, Twice Upon A Time. The episode is written by Steven Moffat, directed by Rachel Talalay and stars Capaldi, Pearl Mackie, Mark Gatiss and David Bradley.

According to the official synopsis, Twice Upon A Time will see Twelve and Bill “team up with the first ever Doctor to battle the enchanted glass people before he regenerates into the 13th Doctor”. Expect that to air on December the 25th as usual (we’ll confirm the time as soon as it’s announced).
