Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever follows the same formula as the original, offering fans a familiar yet enjoyable sequel experience. The film successfully blends slasher thrills with 90s nostalgia, but lacks innovation in terms of plot and character development. While the performances are stellar and the tension is well-built, the sequel falls short in differentiating itself from its predecessor, feeling repetitive.
A legacy sequel from Denmark, Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever is an adequate horror movie that entertains but never manages to break any new ground. Game of Thrones' Nikolaj Coster-Waldau reprises his role from the critically acclaimed original Nightwatch from 1994, as does Killing Eve's Kim Bodnia. Joining them are some welcome and younger newcomers. It seems as though a Nightwatch franchise could be the Danish answer to Scream, but it may have come a little too late to feel majorly relevant. The sequel is stylish and engaging throughout, and plays...

Thirty years after the original Nightwatch and twenty-seven years after the American remake, writer/director Ole Bornedal returns, rather literally, to the scene of the crime with Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, a standalone sequel to the original Danish film.
Martin survived the events of the first film and the suicide of his wife Kalinka. It’s taken its toll though, he’s dependent on prescription drugs to get through the day, and he’s even less likeable than he was back then. He also has a daughter, Emma, played by the director’s daughter Fanny Leander Bornedal who is in med school.
Early in the film, needing money, she takes her father’s old job, night watchman, or ward clerk as it’s called now, at the morgue. As...

Thirty years after introducing viewers to a sadistic serial killer in the Danish horror film Nightwatch (aka Nattevagten), writer/director Ole Bornedal has returned to the world of his harrowing film with the sequel Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever. Easily one of my favorite films of the year thus far, Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever is a relentlessly tense examination of the damaging effects of unresolved trauma on families, the painful healing of the grieving process, and how the past can literally come back to haunt you... with something sharp in its hands.
Featuring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Kim Bodnia, and Ulf Pilgaard reprising their roles from the original Nightwatch alongside a talented roster of actors who are new to this franchise, Demons Are Forever is now streaming on Shudder, and Daily Dead caught up with writer/director Ole Bornedal to discuss continuing the story of Nightwatch 30 years later, exploring the aftereffects of violent trauma through his film's characters,...

30 years ago, in 1994, one of the most underrated horror films was released. Director Ole Bornedal's Danish fear-fest, Nightwatch, was instrumental in launching the career of its young lead, the then 24-year-old Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who would later go on to star in a little show called Game of Thrones. His co-star, Kim Bodnia, hasn't done so bad either, coming off of the hit series Killing Eve. Nightwatch got enough attention that it led to a 1997 Americanized reboot, made by Bordenal as well, and starring Ewan McGregor, Nick Nolte, Josh Brolin, and Patricia Arquette. Talk about star-studded! The reboot couldn't capture the imaginable of the original, but three decades later, Bordenal is back with Coster-Waldau, Bodina, and others for a true sequel to his Danish masterpiece. Sadly, Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever is another example of a sequel that exists just to reminisce on what came before without doing much new until it's nearly too late.

Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever explores intergenerational trauma in a powerful and nuanced way. The film slowly reveals past characters with a creepy and unnerving atmosphere. Though lacking in humor, the sequel effectively adds to the themes of the original while remaining a worthy successor.
As a sequel made 30 years later, Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever captures the spirit of the original Danish film as it powerfully explores how trauma can be passed through generations. With the focus shifting to Martins daughter as she drudges up past horrors in a quest to find out the truth of her familys history, writer and director Ole Bornedal has crafted a tense and unnerving horror thriller that pays homage to the past while modernizing the story for a new audience. With unnerving tension, this slow-burning horror gradually unveils its alarming context.

Plot: Thirty years after the events of the 1994 serial killer thriller Nightwatch, the daughter of two of the deeply damaged surviving characters takes her dad’s old job as night watchman at the Department of Forensic Medicine. Investigating the events that ruined her parents’ lives, she accidentally kicks off a new killing spree.

We believe it is safe to say that Spring is finally here in North America. Relatively safe. Pretty sure it is safe. Not only will April showers bring May flowers but May also sees the arrival of the new Danish horror flick Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, and the UK horror flick, Stopmotion. Next month also sees the ongoing live watch parties every other Friday night of The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. Four Toxic Avenger films are coming to the repertory programming next month. We don't know if Bob Clark's Deathdream and Buddy Giovinazzo's Combat Shock are considered part of the Namsploitation genre but they're two Nam-era horror flicks to keep an eye out for next month. Streaming on Shudder May 17th is Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, the chilling sequel to the Danish cult-classic Nightwatch (1994), which inspired the 1997 U.S. remake starring Ewan McGregor.
22-year-old medical student Emma (Fanny Leander Bornedal) has just taken a job as the night watch in the same forensic department where her parents were once almost killed by the famed psychopathic police inspector Wörmer. "Isn't that Wörmer's signature?" Shudder has revealed the official US trailer for the Danish horror mystery sequel Nightwatch 2, known as Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, from the same Danish filmmaker Ole Bornedal. Not to be confused with the two Russian movies Night Watch and Day Watch, this is not related - it's a new sequel to Bornedal's 1994 movie Nightwatch, which was remade into Nightwatch in 1997 with Ewan McGregor. The original also starred Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who has become considerably more famous after "Game of Thrones". In this sequel, Martin's daughter, Emma, takes up a night watch job to find out what happened to her parents almost thirty years ago. A meeting with Wörmer in his cell pulls the serial killer out of his coma and sets in motion a chain of fateful events. Starring Fanny Leander Bornedal, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Kim Bodnia, Sonja Richter, Ulf Pilgaard, Casper Kjær Jensen, Paprika Steen, and Nina Rask.
