Danish filmmaker Christian Tafdrup brought the incredibly bleak film Gæsterne, a.k.a. Speak No Evil (read our review Here) into the world back in 2022 – and when the American remake was released last year, Tafdrup let it be known that he wasn’t impressed by the new take on his story, because it didn’t leave viewers traumatized like the original film did. Now, Deadline has revealed that Tafdrup is on board to direct a remake of director Takashi Miike’s dark and twisted 1999 Japanese film Audition… and we can probably rest assured that he’s not going to take it easy on viewers with his take on the material.

Exclusive: Focus Features, Ashok Amritraj’s Hyde Park Entertainment and Mario Kassar Productions are nearing a deal to produce a feature take of Ryū Murakami’s cult 1997 Japanese horror thriller novel, Audition.

The novel was previously adapted into a 1999 Japanese film of the same name, directed by 2x Cannes Palme D’Or nominee Takashi Miike.

The latest take on Audition is being written and directed by Danish multi-hyphenate Christian Tafdrup who is co-writing with his brother and frequent collaborator, Mads Tafdrup.

Focus is producing alongside Hyde Park’s Ashok and Priya Amritraj and Mario Kassar for Mkp. EPs include multi-media, technology company Cineverse’s Chris McGurk and Yolanda Macias, author Murakami, and Joyce Jun.

Let the Evil Go West follows a railroad worker who stumbles upon a fortune under deeply disturbing circumstances. As horrifying visions and manifestations drive him toward madness, his wife becomes convinced that an evil presence has attached itself to their family.

Xc Vs penned the script. Tim and Trevor White are producing under their Star Thrower Entertainment banner, alongside Mark Fasano and Nathan Klingher for Gramercy Park Media, which is also financing the film, and Allan Mandelbaum.

Back in January, we shared a trailer for director Christian Tafdrup’s psychological horror film Speak No Evil, which was about to screen at the Sundance Film Festival at that time. Magnolia Pictures has acquired domestic U.S. rights to an epic period drama called “King’s Land” starring Mads Mikkelsen, the company announced on Friday.

The film is produced by Danish production powerhouse Zentropa, and was sold by TrustNordisk.

“King’s Land” (working title) is co-written and directed by Arcel and Danish screenwriter Anders Thomas Jensen (“Riders of Justice”) and is based on the Danish bestseller “The Captain and Ann Barbara” from 2020. And Mikkelsen will be joined in the cast by Amanda Collin, who stars in Ridley Scott’s HBO Max drama series “Raised By Wolves” and 2017’s “A Horrible Woman.”

The film follows a Danish family on vacation in Tuscany, where they befriend a Dutch family. Months later the Danish couple receive an invitation to visit the Dutch and decide to go for the weekend. However, it doesn’t take long before the joy of reunion is replaced by misunderstandings. Things gradually get out of hand, as the Dutch turn out to be something different than what they have pretended to be.

The film was directed by Christian Tafdrup, and written by Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup.

TrustNordisk has closed a string of deals on Danish director Christian Tafdrup’s Speak No Evil, now in post.

The film has sold to Australia and New Zealand (The Reset Collective); Benelux (September Film); Russia and Cis (Capella Film); and Hungary (Ads Service).

Speak No Evil was one of the hot works-in-progress projects at last month’s online Nordic Film Market in Goteborg. Tafdrup moves into genre for the first time with the film, which combines drama, social commentary and psychological horror.

Record numbers of industry attendees from 46 countries virtually attended Nordic Film Market at TV Drama Vision.

Goteborg’s industry activities attracted a record 734 delegates for the Nordic Film Market and 566 for TV Drama Vision, from across 46 countries. Like the festival, the industry programme was held online for the first time this year due to the pandemic.

HBO has acquired the rights to “The Investigation,” Tobias Lindholm’s limited series regarding the 2017 murder of journalist Kim Wall. The premium cabler unveiled the trailer for the six-episode show on Monday.

“The Investigation” will explore the complex real-life investigation surrounding the murder of Wall, who boarded a submarine built by former entrepreneur Peter Madsen for an interview in 2017. The submarine was found sunken the following morning and Wall’s dismembered body parts were found throughout the area; Madsen was convicted of the murder in 2018 and sentenced to life imprisonment in a highly-publicized court case.

The Danish-language series will premiere on HBO on February 1.

HBO has acquired the Scandinavian limited series “The Investigation,” about the murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall.

The series will explore the complex real-life investigation surrounding Wall’s 2017 murder, which made international headlines around the world as one of the most notorious criminal cases in Danish media history.

In 2017, Wall went missing after she boarded a submarine to interview Danish entrepreneur Peter Madsen in what became known as “The Submarine Case.” The Submarine was found sunken the morning after the August 10 interview and Madsen was charged, and later convicted, of Wall’s murder.

The premium cable network has bought the linear and streaming rights to the six-part series, which comes from Miso Film, the Danish production company owned by Fremantle.

TrustNordisk has closed key international deals on “The Crossing,” its WWII-set Norwegian family drama. The company will be hosting a market screening at Cannes’ virtual Marché du Film on June 24.

The Danish film industry is on a roll this year with berths secured at major festivals besides the Berlinale where Lone Scherfig’s “The Kindness of Strangers” landed the opening slot, just as Susanne Bier’s Sandra Bullock starrer “Bird Box” is breaking records on Netflix and first-timer Gustav Möller’s “The Guilty” made the foreign-language Oscar shortlist.

It’s a particularly good time because different types of local productions are performing well both at home, where the domestic share of total admissions was a strong 29% in 2018, and in the international arena, which is seeing a new generation of Danish directors coming to the fore.

Last year there were 26 homegrown titles released in Denmark that sold 3.8 million tickets total, up from 2.5 million tickets in 2017, when the national market share was 20%.

HBO Max will now be home to the series Raised by Wolves, an interplanetary TV series developed by Ridley Scott.

HBO Max is boosting its lineup of genre television with the help of the legendary Ridley Scott for a TV offering called Raised by Wolves. Originally slated for TNT, the series has moved to HBO Max, which is set to launch in Spring 2020. The 10-episode series recently wrapped shooting. No release date has been set.

The show is the creation of Aaron Guzikowski, writer of director Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed Hugh Jackman/Jake Gyllenhaal crime drama, Prisoners, Jason Momoa TV series The Red Road and the Rami Malek-starring remake of Papillon. Indeed, Guzikowski will serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner. Scott serves as an executive producer via Scott Free alongside David W. Zucker, Jordan Sheehan, and Madhouse Entertainment’s Adam Kolbrenner and Robyn Meisinger.

Danish director Jesper W Nielsen started the shoot yesterday for thriller The Exception, with a cast featuring Sidse Babett Knudsen, Danica Curcic (Silent Heart), Amanda Collin (A Horrible Woman), and Lene Maria Christensen (Terribly Happy).

As the film starts production, Swedish actor Magnus Krepper (Becoming Astrid) and Danish actor Olaf Johannessen (The Killing) have joined the cast.

LevelK is handling international sales for the film and will be discussing with buyers at Toronto.

Ahead of Cannes, LevelK has closed a raft of deals on the upcoming Danish 3D animation The Incredible Story of the Giant Pear.

The film has been acquired for more than 20 territories including France and Benelux (Ninety-Seven Film Production), Korea (Yejilim Entertainment), Hungary and Romania (Ads Service), Poland (Vivarto), Middle East (Empire Networks), Estonia (Estin Film), Bulgaria (Pro Films), Croatia and Slovenia (Radar), and Iran (Century 21).

At the Cannes market on Friday (May 19), LevelK will host director Philip Einstein Lipski to discuss the project in two exclusive events at the Scandinavian Terrace.

Ruben Ostlund got buyers and festival programmers hopping with excitement in Goteborg as he presented the first footage from his forthcoming fifth feature The Square during the festival’s work in progress pitches.

Ostlund screened about seven minutes from one scene of the new film, during which a controversial performance artist (played by Terry Notary) makes guests at a black-tie art gala very uncomfortable. “You know I love awkward situations,” the director said.

Goteborg’s audience of industry experts commented that they were impressed by the confidence of the unnerving scene, which showed Ostlund working on a bigger scale even than his last hit, Force Majeure.

At a festival session later for the public, Ostlund previewed a second clip from the film, in which a museum director (Claes Bang) delivers a self-centered video apology to a boy he had accused of being a thief.

Exclusive: Jussi Hiltunen’s Lapland-set feature is screening at Goteborg’s Nordic Film Market and Berlin’s Efm.

LevelK has taken on sales for Jussi Hiltunen’s Finnish dramatic thriller Law Of The Land.

The Denmark-based sales company will screen the film at Berlin’s Efm and it is also screening for industry at this week’s Nordic Film Market in Goteborg.

The film is a modern Western set in Arctic Lapland on the Finnish-Swedish border.

The story follows Lasse, a retiring policeman who gets caught in between two men trying to kill each other.

Nordisk Film released in January in Finland.

Producers are Kai Nordberg and Kaarle Aho for Making Movies in co-production with Joachim Lyng of Sweet Films (Norway) and Svein Andersen & Kjetil Jensberg of FilmCamp (Norway).

The $2.6m (€2.4m) film was backed by the Finnish Film Foundation, Yle, Eurimages, the Norwegian Film Institute, Creative Europe and FilmCamp.
