Peacock has given a second-season pickup to Ted, the prequel TV series to Seth MacFarlane’s Ted film franchise.
The seven-episode initial installment of Ted, released January 11, was billed as an event series. Its overwhelming ratings success, becoming Peacock’s most-watched original series to date and the No. 1 original streaming comedy in the U.S. for more than two consecutive months in the Nielsen rankings, naturally triggered a conversation about a second season.
Despite Ted‘s excellent performance, the renewal decision was not straightforward, I hear, as the comedy’s hybrid live-action/CGI nature makes it expensive to produce, and it also takes a long time to make.
Still, keeping its biggest hit was important to Peacock, and four months after the Season 1 drop, the streamer has ordered a second season.
Set in 1993, Ted comes from writer, director, executive producer and showrunner MacFarlane.

Writer-director David Ayer is calling out the “Fast and the Furious” franchise for ignoring his contributions to the 2001 film.
During a recent episode of Jon Bernthal’s “Real Ones” podcast, Ayer addressed his involvement on “The Fast and the Furious” film that kicked off the multi-billion dollar franchise. Ayer continued, “When I got that script, that shit was set in New York, it was all Italian kids, right? I’m like, ‘Bro, I’m not going to take it unless I can set it in L.

Film and TV content originating from the U.S. and Korea remain the two pillars of subscription video consumption across the growth markets of the Asia-Pacific region, according to a new report from regional consultancy Media Partners Asia.
The report’s researchers used a proprietary measurement tool to weigh SVOD viewership across the 10 leading markets of Apac — excluding India and the highly regulated China market — for a period covering Jan. 2022 to March 2023. They found that U.S.-originating content took a 30 percent share of total viewership in the region, while Korean content led all categories with a 40 percent share.
Australia, a $2.2 billion SVOD market, exhibits the highest reliance on U.S. entertainment with a 72 percent slice of total local viewership, while Korean content takes only 4 percent in that English language-led market. But in the growing markets of Southeast Asia — including population centers like Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam — U.S.

Fired By Finas
The Malaysian National Film Development Corporation (Finas), the government-backed agency that oversees the country’s film industry, has dismissed its CEO Nasir Ibrahim after less than two years in the job. It follows the return of Kamil Othman who was appointed chairman in February.
Finas notification
The latest move was announced on the organization’s Facebook page, along with the appointment of Rozita Waty Ridzuan as Finas interim CEO until a permanent replacement is found.
The notice was vague on the reasons for Ibrahim’s early termination, explaining that it was part of a wider recalibration of creative industry policies. “This initiative will hopefully further help Malaysian filmmakers and industry players to produce quality films that have high value in both local and international markets,” the statement said.

At Sunday night’s BAFTA TV Awards in London, the most popular couple in the room won’t actually be British.
Given the U.K. reception to Australian series “Colin From Accounts” — which was acquired by the BBC in one of its smartest deals in years — that honor will likely go to Harriet Dyer and Patrick Brammall, the real-life partners who created and star in the half-hour rom-com. The couple will be presenting a BAFTA during the ceremony, and afterwards, they’re available for selfies.
“If we land in the U.K. and people recognize us on the street, that’ll be massive, because it’s never happened to me,” says Dyer. “I’ve lived in L.A. for five years, and I’m on a network television show, and not a single person has gone, ‘Are you from “American Auto?”’ Not one. So I’m pumped. I want to...

In March 2022, HBO Max launched in 15 European countries, bringing the number of territories that the streaming service was available in to 61. At the time, the Warner Bros. Discovery platform planned to expand to 190 markets by 2026, but recent exclusivity agreements and terminations around the world might indicate that the company is changing its plans for how it will roll the service out internationally moving forward.

I’ve been showrunning original and branded digital content since 2006. Along with my company, Happy Little Guillotine Studios, we sort-of-accidentally created one of the first digital series (called Break a Leg) in 2006 and by some combination of luck, skill and (perhaps most importantly) agility, we’ve managed to survive and thrive in the space ever since.
Strangely though, as we’re coming to the end of 2017 and I’ve been reading articles about the state of digital media, I’m finding myself with a strong sense of déjà vu – apparently, the problems in 2017 are identical to the problems of 2006 (minus President Voldemort and his merry Nazi band).
That is: Where’s the money? How do you get people to watch your series? How do you scale? How do you attract brands? It’s dying! It’s the future! It’s dying again! Now TV is dying! Now TV is the only path forward!

Project Name: Binge
Asking For: $35,000 through Indiegogo
Amount Raised Thus Far (At Time Of Post): $19,837
Days Remaining In Campaign (At Time Of Post): 30
Description: Angela Gulner, Yuri Baranovsky, and Happy Little Guillotine Studios want to create a show that speaks to those affected by eating disorders. That creative triumvirate is behind Binge, which will intermix the bulimia of its protagonist with comedy.
In Binge, Gulner portrays Angela, whose co-ownership of a cake shop and madcap romantic life lead to conflict with her friends, acquaintances, and lovers. At the same time, she struggles with bulimia, which exacerbates her personal struggles. In the Binge pilot, released last year, she begins to seek help at a local clinic, cracking wise all the while.
With their Indiegogo campaign, Gulner, Baranovsky, and the rest of the team hope to build on their pilot with five more episodes. Through those installments, they will continue...

Starve, binge, purge, repeat. This is the endless cycle of life for anyone suffering from bulimia. Since they always say ‘write what you know’, that’s exactly what actress-turned-creator Angela Gulner has done – twice. First, Angela launched the pilot episode of the dark comedy web series, Binge, late last year. The project gained much critical acclaim and public attention for its non-glamorous yet comedic approach to this very real topic. As a follow-up, Angela recently unveiled the prequel short film, The Blind Girl, providing a love-versus-bulimia backstory to her edgy eating disorder tale. To help her get both from script to screen, Angela turned to producing partner and director Yuri Baranovsky. They also brought in actor Drake Bell, the star of Nickelodeon’s Josh & Drake...

A few months ago, my partners and I had a wild hypothesis. It was this: the success of a digital project is primarily dependent on the quality of the story.
Revolutionary, right? A real game-changer. Who wants to hire us as consultants?
Here’s the thing. Since my company (shameless plug, we are Happy Little Guillotine Studios – check us out!) started creating content in the digital space in 2006, the industry has been desperately chasing the, “How do we get views?!” high like a cokehead chases… well, coke, probably. Maybe deer, if they’re a hunting cokehead.
It’s a desperate, “We’ll sacrifice anything for views!” approach that can give digital networks tunnel vision when they greenlight programs. Instead of picking the best story, they pick the story with the best influencer package. Don’t get me wrong, this is a strategy that my company has also employed and continues...

It’s a great pitch: A comedy about bulimia. It sells itself. So well, in fact, that more than one person had the idea. “When I saw ‘The Skinny,’ I had a meltdown,” Angela Gulner, creator and star of “Binge,” told IndieWire. “I was like: ‘My story has been told. There’s no room for it anymore.’ But then I calmed down a little bit.”
Read More: How ‘The Skinny’ Creator Jessie Kahnweiler Got From YouTube to Sundance (Hint: Jill Soloway Helped)
She realized that there was room for more than one eating disorder comedy. The success of Jessie Kahnweiler’s “The Skinny” (the web series premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was co-produced by Jill Soloway) did not mean the failure of “Binge.” Quite the opposite — it meant there was an audience for her story.
Not only that, but such a universal and pressing issue deserves more than one story.
