XYZ Films and Flawless have sent us the trailer for the sci-fi adventure film Watch the Skies, a Swedish production that has been dubbed in English for its May 9th theatrical release in North America – and the accompanying press release mainly focuses on the fact that this is “the world’s first theatrical full-length feature to use AI for immersive dubbing.” Describing the process as “AI done right,” the press release gives information on “how Flawless is enhancing voice over dubs without replacing human creativity: Filmmaker-Friendly – Collaborated with original filmmakers and cast for the English dub. Immersive Visual Translation – Vubbing tech adds perfectly synced lip movements to traditional dubs—no synthetic audio used. SAG-Aligned & Vo-Artist Friendly – Supporting union talent and protecting voiceover jobs. Global Accessibility – Breaking language barriers to bring great films to wider audiences.” You can get a sample of their work in the trailer embedded above.

It's a common complaint among a certain group of moviegoers: they would watch more foreign films... if they didn't have to read the subtitles. English dubs are a decent substitute, but they can also be distracting due to the words not matching the movement of the actors' mouths. For anyone in this camp, artificial intelligence company Flawless has a solution they are calling a "game changer" in the realm of foreign film distribution.
For the first time, a non-English movie will hit theaters with a special version made specifically for the U.S. and other English-speaking countries using AI to create the dub. The film, titled Watch the Skies, is a UFO-themed action comedy from Sweden, originally shot in its native tongue, according to an official report from Variety. In addition to dubbing the movie in English, Flawless applied generative AI to the faces of the actors so it appears...

A foreign language sci-fi movie is headed to U.S. movie theaters this spring, but audiences won’t have to groan about subtitles. For the first time, an international feature film will look and sound as if it was made in English thanks to artificial intelligence.
Though the supernatural Swedish adventure “Watch the Skies” was made in its native tongue, AI company Flawless has digitally altered the film’s images and sound so character mouth movements and speech will be perfectly synced for English speaking viewers. The tech uses voices of the original cast to create dubs, and is compliant with SAG-AFTRA.
AMC Theatres, the nation’s top movie chain, has committed 100 screens to the project in the top 20 markets across America. Flawless has partnered with distributor XYZ films to roll the film out to cineplexes on May 9.

Berlin Film Festival opening film The Light – which touches on the implications of the digital age for humanity – will be released in English in North America using visual translation technology from Flawless.
Flawless announced it had acquired the drama in conjunction with XYZ Films, which is making the film available to U.S. buyers at the EFM.
The acquisition is the result of a partnership with XYZ, first announced in Cannes, under which they co-acquire rights to foreign-language films to convert them to English for distribution in English-speaking territories using Flawless’ TrueSync technology.
German director Tom Tykwer’s third movie to open the Berlinale, The Light revolves around a middle-class Berlin family nearing collapse as it faces an increasingly unstable world.
When a mysterious, Syrian housekeeper enters their lives, the family’s secrets and emotions are brought to light, while the housekeeper’s hidden agenda threatens to reshape their world forever.

Flawless has partnered with XYZ Films to sell US rights at EFM on an English-language version of Tom Tykwer’s Berlinale opening night film The Light that used the AI company’s immersive dubbing technology.
The process involves Flawless’s visual translation tool TrusSync, which has been praised by SAG-AFTRA’s top negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, and matches up manipulated lip movements of consenting original actors to a dubbed dialogue track in another language.
The Light is the latest in a growing pipeline of international films to undergo this process that Flawless and XYZ Films have acquired and, in some cases,...

Has Hollywood reached peak AI paranoia? This awards season, before Karla Sofía Gascón’s posts on X (formerly Twitter) about George Floyd and Islam became the focus of consternation, the Oscar uproar was centered on the use of artificial intelligence in the tweaking of voice performances in Emilia Pérez — for Gascón’s singing — and in Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, to improve the pronunciation of Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones’ Hungarian-language dialog.
The virulence of the backlash against such minor and technical applications of AI — used, in both cases, with the full participation and approval of the artists involved — illustrates the widespread perception, inside the film industry and among the general public, that AI is a threat to jobs and to artistic integrity. An AI zero-tolerance policy has become fashionable for celebrities, with the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Glenn Close and Hank Azaria raising the alarm. Distributors have taken...

At present, watching a piece of foreign language content that’s been dubbed in English is an exercise in discomfort.
Thanks to the proliferation of local-language film and TV — brought to us mostly by streaming platforms — the experience of viewing a dubbed Danish crime procedural or a Spanish boarding school soap opera are nightmarish trips to the Uncanny Valley. That’s the term widely used for technology that does not suspend our disbelief and, in fact, takes human resemblance and tosses it into a blender of dystopian nightmares.
Enter Flawless, an AI-driven filmmaking studio that wants you to stream buzzy shows and still be able to sleep at night (sans visions of mismatching mouth movements and brutal scene cuts). Founded in 2018 by multi-hyphenate director Scott Mann and Nick Lynes, Flawless’ proprietary tech TrueSync maps over the faces of actors and delivers translations that are the most impressive we’ve seen...

After a vibrant, raunchy four-season run, Netflix’s coming-of-age hit Sex Education has finally closed its doors to viewers. With its talented ensemble led by stalwarts like Gillian Anderson and newer stars like Asa Butterfield, the teen comedy-drama dabbled in taboos about all the iffy stuff that adolescents struggle with in high school. Critical acclaim was targeted at most aspects, but casting did play an integral role behind its hype. Both Anderson and Butterfield had significant popularity even before the series debuted in 2019, but Sex Education also worked wonders for breakout stars like Ncuti Gatwa and Emma Mackey, both of whom were also featured in the 2023 smash hit Barbie.
Now, that Otis Milburn and his friends’ sexual misadventures finally conclude on Netflix, its vast and diverse cast faces a whole new set of opportunities in both film and TV. In fact, Sex Education showrunner and playwright Laurie Nunn herself is...

My brothers and I have always been interested in the supernatural and paranormal stuff. Ever since we were kids we've explored and researched stuff involving ghosts, UFO's and mythical creatures because it was so much fun to do!
This new film, Watch the Skies, taps into that kind of stuff as the story revolves around two brothers who try to capture amateur video of outer space, but instead end up encountering invading aliens. I don't expect the movie to be great or anything, but it does kind of have a charming vibe.
This is a family sci-fi film that was made on a very low budget, but maybe it'll be something worth checking out if you're interested in the subject matter. The movie is based on the graphic novel of the same name and here's the synopsis:
It all began with a simple question: it's just one balloon in the entire sky,...

Intended as a sequel to Close Encounters, Night Skies began in the 1970s and eventually became E.T.
Having scored a phenomenal hit with Jaws in 1975, director Steven Spielberg used his considerable industry clout to make Close Encounters Of The Third Kind - a science fiction fairytale for the UFO age. It was a personal project for Spielberg, conceived and partly written by the director himself (several other writers made uncredited passes on the script), and based on Firelight, the UFO film he'd shot for $500 while he was a teenager.
“I had a real, deep-rooted belief that we had been visited in this century,” the director once said of his fascination with the UFO phenomenon. “I was a real UFO devotee in the 1970s, and really into the UFO phenomenon from reading. For me, it was science.”
Like Jaws, the production on Close Encounters was difficult; as...
