Today’s Free Movie of the Day is the 2006 thriller The Stranger Game, starring Mimi Rogers. There have been many dozens of adaptations of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol over the years. Some set their scene in the traditional Victoriana of Dickens’ tale, others go farther afield, gender-swapping Scrooge or even anthropomorphise him as with the 1998 video classic – An All Dogs Christmas Carol. Ryan Reynolds has made no secret of the fact that Green Lantern was not his finest cinematic moment, and he has spent the last decade making sure that everyone knows it. Filming has officially begun on Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell's Spirited, a musical take on Dickens' A Christmas Carol for Apple TV+. Reynolds announced the news on his very active Twitter feed, posting an image of the pair standing face to face on Day 1 of shooting. The movie was originally announced at the beginning of the year, with Octavia Spencer being sought by the casting team to join the funnymen in the latest adaptation of the classic Christmas story.

Richard Donner, director of the original “Superman” film as well as “The Goonies” and all four “Lethal Weapon” films, has died at the age of 91. Deadline reported that his wife, Lauren Schuler Donner and business manager confirmed his passing. No cause of death has been provided.

His early work included directing episodes of “The Rifleman,” “The Twilight Zone,” “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” “Gilligan’s Island,” and “Perry Mason.” Later, he was behind the camera for “Get Smart,” “The Fugitive,” “The Streets of San Francisco,” and “Kojak.”

Released in 1992, The Muppet Christmas Carol was a modest box-office success, but has since become a Christmas classic, and is consistently listed as one of the best film adaptations of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Part of the reason the movie is so beloved is due to the classic songs written by Oscar and Grammy-winning songwriter, Paul Williams and score by composer Miles Goodman.

Andrew Lincoln is swapping zombies for ghosts in his latest gig, as The Walking Dead star has just been announced to be playing Ebenezer Scrooge in an upcoming stage adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol this December. The production will take place at London’s The Old Vic theatre and be livestreamed online, kicking off on the 12th and running until Christmas Eve.

This version of the timeless festive tale has been adapted by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) and on December 17th, Lincoln will take part in a behind-the-scenes look at the socially distanced play as part of the Old Vic: In Conversation series, hosted by British TV personality Dermot O’Leary. The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 28 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 28; last year only 21 TV movies were submitted.

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until July 13 to cast their 2020 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. In 2017 that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.
