Zombieland Soundtrack: Every Song & When It Plays
Image
The Zombieland soundtrack features an eclectic mix of easygoing American recording artists, such as Willie Nelson as well as more hard rock-heavy tracks by the likes of Metallica and Van Halen. Revolving around a ragtag bunch of survivors in a zombie apocalypse, the 2009 comedy has acquired a cult status, eventually spawning a sequel a decade later. The diversity within the movie's soundtrack can best be explained from the vastly different personalities among the main characters. So, while Woody Harrelson's Tallahassee is a short-tempered zombie killer, Jesse Eisenberg's Columbus is more cautious. Joining them are the fearless and strategic Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin).

Zombieland's adrenaline-fueled action is perfectly paired with the high-octane music in the soundtrack, with genres ranging from classic rock to metal to musical symphonies. While they can often help add to the pace and comedy of the scene, the music can also foreshadow events to come.

Jean-Paul Belmondo, Star of the French New Wave Classic ‘Breathless,’ Dies at 88
Image
Actor Jean-Paul Belmondo, whose performance in Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 “Breathless” helped usher in the French New Wave, has died at the age of 88. The actor’s lawyer confirmed the report to news outlets on Monday. No cause of death has been revealed. Belmondo starred in nearly 100 features, for both film and television including the aforementioned “Breathless” and “Pierrot le Fou.”

Belmondo was April 9, 1933 west of Paris in Neuilly-sur-Seine. Acting didn’t come immediately to Belmondo. He began as a boxer, making his amateur debut in the ring in 1949. The physical changes to his face, according to the actor, compelled him to leave the sport. He would eventually attend a private drama school , transitioning to the Conservatoire of Dramatic Arts in his twenties. He made his stage debut in 1953.

His first film role came in Jean-Pierre Cassel’s 1957 “On Foot, on Horse, and on Wheels,” but he wound up on the cutting-room floor.

Song You Need to Know: MonoNeon, ‘Invisible’
Image
When Flea refers to you as “the greatest fucking electric bass player,” you know you’ve done something right. Just ask MonoNeon, who appeared in a video on the Red Hot Chili Peppers member’s Instagram this summer. The artist, born Dywane Thomas Jr., likely realized he was headed in a fruitful direction back in 2014, when Prince caught wind of his talents and reached out to jam. But both milestones came before MonoNeon released “Invisible,” his favorite song to date.

A funky pop song with unwavering soul, “Invisible” pulls stylistic elements from the the Sixties,...

Blu-ray Review: Man’S Best Friend
Have you ever watched a movie about a psychotic, genetically modified dog and found yourself wondering if it was in fact made by a psychotic, genetically modified dog? Such was the case for me while watching the new Scream Factory release of John Lafia’s 1993 killer canine flick Man’s Best Friend. Now, recently I’ve developed an affinity for the bonkers horror that came out of the early to mid ’90s. I can appreciate a movie that takes a crazy premise and commits to it. The problem with Man’s Best Friend is that it doesn’t quite know what it’s committing to.

Lori Tanner (Ally Sheedy) is a journalist complete with an oversized pants suit, a smoking habit, and a rather weaselly boyfriend named Perry (Fredric Lehne). In an attempt to break away from doing fluff pieces on the local news station, she follows a lead to Emax Laboratories,...

Drake
Drake’s ‘Scorpion’ Features Michael Jackson Vocal, References Newborn Son
Drake
The long-awaited new album by Drake has arrived. “Scorpion” clocks in at 25 tracks, 12 on side A and 13 on side B, and features guest appearances by Jay-z (“Talk Up”), Static Major and Ty Dolla Sign (“After Dark”) and a previously unreleased vocal by Michael Jackson which leads the hook to the song “Don’t Matter to Me.”

Credited elsewhere on the album are Nicki Minaj, Future and Paul Anka, the 76-year-old crooner known for classics like “Puppy Love” and “Put Your Head on My Shoulder” and a longtime collaborator of Jackson’s.

The album also seems to confirm rumors that Drake has fathered a son, acknowledging his newborn child in the track “Emotionless” and “March 14,” in which he raps “kiss my son on the forehead.” Other references include lyrics about George Zimmerman and Malcolm X.

Within an hour of its release, “Scorpion” shot up to No. 1 on the iTunes chart and on Apple Music.
