15 Superhero Games That Should Never Have Been Canceled
Image
We’ve been blessed with a surprising number of great superhero video games over the years. From Batman for the Nes to The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and Marvel’s Spider-Man, developers have often shown superheroes the love it took them years to consistently receive in other mediums.

Yet, I understand why it’s so easy to focus on the superhero games we almost got rather than the ones that we did get. There’s an entire section of gaming’s digital graveyard devoted to canceled superhero games, and it’s filled with projects that could have been contenders or, at the very least, would have given comic book fans everywhere the chance to spend time with characters that still haven’t gotten a proper video game adaptation to this day.

So brace yourself for disappointment as we look at what could have been and 15 of the most notable superhero games...

Spider-Man Miles Morales: Simon Krieger’s Fate, Origin, and Voice Actor Explained
Spider-Man (2017)
This Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales article contains spoilers.

Spider-Man has always benefited from one of the best rogues’ galleries in comics, but the recently released Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales features a villain whom some franchise fans may not immediately recognize: a businessman named Simon Krieger.

While it probably won’t come as much as a surprise that Miles Morales focuses on a new villain given that it’s a spin-off of the Marvel’s Spider-Man story, it turns out that Krieger isn’t actually an entirely new face in the Marvel universe. The game’s ending also strongly suggests that this won’t be the last we see of him.

Let’s break down who Simon Krieger is, his comic book origin, what happened to him at the end of the game, and whether we’ll see him in the inevitable Marvel’s Spider-Man 2…

Who is Simon Krieger?...

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered Reveals Two Additional New Suits
Christmas is coming early for Spider-Man fans this year.

Next week marks the long-awaited launch of Insomniac’s new entry in the web-slinger’s video game adventures, though this time around, it won’t be Peter Parker donning the mask. Miles Morales, Peter’s protégé and equally talented wall-crawler, embarks on his own solo journey to learn the superhero ropes later this month, taking on two warring factions threatening to disrupt the security and peace of his home in Harlem. Unsurprisingly, the deluge of reviews published today, following Sony’s lifting of the embargo, have revealed Miles Morales to be a worthy, if somewhat derivative, follow-up to 2018’s installment, which will also be available on PlayStation 5 next week in the form of a remaster.

As for what’s new in this particular version, all the usual visual and performance upgrades that one would expect are guaranteed, with other tweaks including...

Is Spider-Man: Miles Morales Going to Be on PS4 and PC?
Spider-Man (2017)
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is being touted as an amazing follow-up to Marvel’s Spider-Man as well as one of the PlayStation 5’s best launch games by Sony, as we head into the next generation of console gaming. It’s certainly true that a blockbuster first-party exclusive like Miles Morales could help Sony’s next-gen console beat out the powerful Xbox Series X this holiday.

While Miles Morales isn’t a “full” sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man but more of a next-gen expansion starring the fan-favorite Spidey in training, everything that we’ve seen of the game thus far suggests it feature the same brilliant open-world gameplay and developer Insomniac Games’ undeniable sense of style. It will also feature a bodega cat named Spider-Man, which feels like a selling point in itself.

Regardless of how you feel about cats, Miles Morales will undoubtedly be one of the games early adopters...

Every Launch Title Confirmed For The PlayStation 5
Believe it or not, today marks the two-week countdown to the long-awaited launch of Sony’s next console. While Microsoft will be the party officially kicking off next-gen this time around with the worldwide release of Xbox Series X/S on November 10th, PlayStation 5 is due to follow just two days later, though only in a select few territories, including North America. Folks in Europe and elsewhere will have to exercise patience for an additional week, though in the grand scheme of things, seven days matters very little.

Regardless of which date you have jotted down on your calendar, the launch lineups for both consoles will be identical no matter where they’re purchased, and it’s Sony’s entrant in the race that’s currently the runaway winner in that regard. While the situation can (and most certainly will) change in the days and weeks ahead, gamers who opt...

Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales: New Villain and Spidey Suits Revealed
Miles Morales
Fans who pre-ordered the PlayStation 5 are undoubtedly looking forward to returning to the Marvel universe for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a continuation of the critically-acclaimed superhero game from 2018 that sees young Miles become a hero in his own right. This time around, Miles is working to protect Harlem from a new villain known as the Tinkerer, all while being caught in the middle of a war between the Roxxon Energy Corporation and the Underground, the Tinkerer’s army.

The Simpsons Recasts Carl Carlson for Season 32 Opener
Alex Désert
Homer Simpson’s African American nuclear plant supervisor Carl Carlson will be voiced by Alex Désert on The Simpsons season 32 premiere, according to Variety.

There is now word yet on whether Désert will continue to voice the character beyond Sunday’s episode “Undercover Burns.” Désert is a veteran animation voice actor, appearing as Swarm on Disney Xd’s Spider-Man: Maximum Venom, Mr. Bojenkins on Adult Swim’s Mr. Pickles and its spinoff, Momma Named Me Sheriff, and on The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. He was a regular on the TV series Becker, which starred Ted Danson, and appeared on such varied shows as Boy Meets World, Better Call Saul, and Better Things. He also appeared in films like The Flash, Freaky Friday, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, High Fidelity and Swingers.

‘The Simpsons’ Season Premiere: Here’s Who Took Over Carl’s Voice From Hank Azaria (Exclusive)
Image
“The Simpsons” fans might notice at least one long-running character sounds a little different in Sunday’s Season 32 premiere.

In the episode, Carl Carlson — Homer Simpson’s nuclear plant co-worker, and best friend to Lenny Leonard — is now voiced by actor Alex Désert (“Better Things”). Désert replaces Hank Azaria in the role, at least for that episode.

The switch comes as “The Simpsons” producers confirmed earlier this summer that it would no longer have white actors voice non-white characters. Azaria had voiced Carl, who is Black, since the beginning of the show.

It’s unclear whether Désert is Carl’s permanent voice, and if he’ll be voicing other characters as well. Among other recurring characters the edict might impact include Dr. Julius Hibbert, who is seen in the episode, but doesn’t speak.

Désert also voices Swarm on Disney Xd’s “Spider-Man: Maximum Venom” and Mr. Bojenkins on Adult Swim...

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered PS5 Upgrade Options Explained
Alex Neustaedter in A.X.L. (2018)
Excitement quickly turned to confusion when Sony announced that a remastered version of Marvel’s Spider-Man would be released for PS5 as part of the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition. What should have been a simple cause for celebration was complicated by questions regarding how this remaster would fit into the sometimes confusing world of next-gen upgrade options.

See, if you buy the recently confirmed PS4 version of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, you can upgrade to the PS5 version of the game at no extra cost. By that logic, some fans assumed that those who own the PS4 version of Marvel’s Spider-Man would be able to upgrade to the PS5 remastered edition of that game at no extra cost.

However, it turns out that’s absolutely not the case. Well…at least that’s most people’s first read of a lengthy (and only vaguely helpful) statement...

Spider-Man PS4 Owners Won’t Get Free Upgrades To The PS5 Version
Sony’s not doing itself any favors with the handling of Spider-Man‘s upcoming PlayStation 5 remaster.

As confirmed earlier this month, Insomniac’s acclaimed 2018 title, a PS4 exclusive, is headed to next-gen later this year with a raft of visual and technical improvements intended to take advantage of the superior hardware housed within the PS5. A welcome announcement, of course, but seemingly forgetting the backlash Activision received in 2016 for its bungled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered launch (initially only available as a bundle with Infinite Warfare), Sony has essentially made the exact same mistake.

Only by purchasing the Ultimate Edition of Spider-Man: Miles Morales – which is $20 more expensive than the standard version – will Spidey fans be able to get their hands on Peter Parker’s original adventure and it’s now been confirmed that the premium will be required regardless of whether you own the PS4 version or not.

PlayStation Intends to Bring More First-Party Games to PC
Spider-Man (2017)
In a recent corporate report about the 2020 year (which is typically as thrilling as it sounds), Sony revealed that they intend to bring more PlayStation games to PC.

“Sie aims to achieve robust revenue growth by accelerating the virtuous cycle that has been established for the PlayStation Platform,” reads a section of the report. “Targeted outcomes include growth in active users, stronger retention, and a shorter cash conversion cycle, from which expanded cash flow can be expected. We will explore expanding our 1st party titles to the PC platform, in order to promote further growth in our profitability.”

That last line is really the star of the report from a consumer perspective, but its meaning is a little more ambiguous than it may initially appear to be. What does Sony mean when they say they will “explore” the possibility of bringing more games to the PC platform. Does that mean...

Animated Spider-Man Movie Trailer Brings Miles Morales Into the Spider-Verse
Spider-Man (2017)
Christopher Miller and Phil Lord have finally given us the title for their upcoming Spider-Man Animated Movie. It is officially called Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is exciting and quite the mouthful. Along with the title, it had also been rumored that the trailer will drop sometime this weekend, and we now have it. It was announced that the animated movie would exist independently from the cinematic universe, offering a completely new take on Spider-Man that has yet to be seen, which is where the Spider-Verse comes into play. Into the Spider-Verse won't be telling the tale of Peter Parker, but instead the story of Miles Morales. Though, it looks like Peter Parker is here, too, in animated form.

It had been rumored before Spider-Man: Homecoming that Sony was toying with the idea of using Miles Morales in the movie instead of Tom Holland's Peter Parker, but the...

Marvel Legacy #1 Review
Marvel’s had a tough year, with the House of Ideas struggling to cope with poor sales performance. Needless to say, the solution is apparently the latest relaunch, known as Marvel Legacy. It’s all kicking off with this week’s #1, a one-shot that establishes the overarching narrative for everything that’s about to happen. That’s an approach Marvel pioneered back in the ’90s, with the “Age of Apocalypse” event, and it’s been repeated many times.

The company has assembled some of their top talent for this book, writer Jason Aaron and artist Esad Ribic. Aaron really is one of Marvel’s best, a storyteller who got his big break when he won a Marvel talent competition and got to write an eight-page Wolverine tale. He’s best known for his ongoing series of The Mighty Thor, for a lengthy and much-loved Wolverine run, and for a tremendous Doctor Strange arc.

‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’ Showrunner Kevin Shinick Focuses on “Science and Relationships”
When Emmy-winning writer Kevin Shinick pitched his one-word idea to executives for Marvel's Spider-Man, he knew he had their attention. The word: Science. It's just as much a part of Peter Parker's DNA as the radioactive spider bite that gifted him his powers in the series' six-part origin story. And while Parker's scientific genius and ingenuity has long been an integral part of his decades of comic book lore, it's rarely explored earnestly in any of the superhero's many adaptations. Marvel's Spider-Man aims to rectify that with a …...

Marvel's Defenders: who is Sigourney Weaver playing?
James Hunt Jul 26, 2017

James tries to suss out which character Sigourney Weaver will be playing in Marvel's latest Netflix superhero show, The Defenders...

The Defenders panel at Sdcc was the last big opportunity for Marvel to reveal any twist on the identity of Sigourney Weaver’s character ahead of the miniseries’ debut, and in true Marvel Studios fashion, they weren’t letting anything slip. We’ve seen a little of her, we know she’s someone important to The Hand – but right now, we’ve got no clue who she’s going to play. All we have to go on is the name 'Alexandra Reid' – if that is indeed her real name - and that means it’s up to us to try and solve the mystery…

First Look At The Amazing Spider-Man #27 Teases Silver Sable’s Unexpected Return

Silver Sable made her return in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #25 after her apparent demise at the hands of the Rhino, but we’ll be waiting until issue #27 to find out how exactly the fan-favourite character managed to survive being both drowned and subsequently blown up. In the preview above, however, we do get a glimpse of the conversation between Peter Parker and Sable which will shed some light on what happened to her – though the most revealing panel has been hidden from us at this time.

For more on what to expect from The Amazing Spider-Man #27, here’s the solicitation text:

Norman Osborn has slowly worked his way to a position of power in the Eastern European nation of Symkaria, and now has a goblin-ized army behind him. With Symkarian hero Silver Sable at his side,...

It’s time to party like it’s 1999, because Eddie Brock is back in the driving seat of Venom.

The symbiote’s status quo has been as fluid as its own form over the last few years. Mac Gargan was Venom for a time – even becoming a member of the Dark Avengers, and more recently, Flash Thompson became a fan-favorite as Agent Venom, even joining the Guardians of the Galaxy for a while. Returned to Earth, the symbiote has now found a new host – former Ranger Lee Price. Venom #6, though, is the moment when all that changes.

It’s the issue where the Venom symbiote finally goes home.

Mike Costa’s script is smart and savvy, and – in a delightful twist – neither Lee Price nor Eddie Brock is the main character of this issue. Rather, the symbiote is.

Amazing Spider-Man #25 Review
In these days of launches and relaunches, it’s actually quite unusual for a Marvel comic to get to 25 issues. Let’s face it, though, if any series was going to do it – it’s Dan Slott’s Amazing Spider-Man. Incredibly, Slott joined the team of Amazing Spider-Man ten years ago, back in 2007, and in those ten years we’ve seen dramatic changes to Spider-Man‘s status quo. Under Slott’s direction, the franchise has broadened out more than ever before, with the “Spider-Verse” event launching other web-slingers into action; we now have a wider-than-ever spider-centric corner of the Marvel Universe, with spinoffs like Silk, Spider-Gwen and Spider-Man 2099.

A lot of writers tend to use an issue like this to complete a story, but not Dan Slott. He tied up “Dead No More: The Clone Conspiracy” in the last month, and now he’s moving on to the new arc,...
