Gym Freak Turns Killer in Bloody Welsh Horror ‘Protein’
Image
A grisly blend of dark comedy, urban decay and escalating gang violence is headed to cinemas this June with Protein, the debut feature from writer-director Tony Burke. The film, which had its world premiere at FrightFest 2024 to strong reviews and a sold-out crowd, will open in select UK cinemas on 13 June via Bulldog Film Distribution, followed by a digital release on 14 July.

Expanding on Burke’s 2014 short of the same name, Protein follows a traumatised former soldier named Sion, played by Craig Russell, who returns to his hometown in South Wales in search of peace and routine. What he finds instead is a destructive obsession with bodybuilding and a chilling compulsion to consume human flesh for its protein content. When he murders and eats a local drug dealer, it sets off a violent chain reaction that spirals far beyond his control, pitting rival criminal factions against one another in a rapidly escalating turf war.

Slamdance’s beloved Unstoppable festival is now going on tour, thanks to the new “Slamdance Unstoppable: On The Road” program. “’Slamdance Unstoppable: On The Road’ is a true rockstar moment for our filmmakers,” Unstoppable co-founder Juliet Romeo said in a press statement. “Having our films travel from state to state, screening at incredible art houses, feels like the Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and Beyoncé tour rolled into one. I’m thrilled to kick things off this summer in our old stomping grounds — Utah. It’s powerful to return to where it all began, especially now. In today’s political climate, continuing to push for...

Six Atmospheric Horror Films for ‘Silent Hill’ Fans
Image
Unlike most other survival horror franchises, the Silent Hill games keep fans coming back for more by investing in a certain feeling rather than familiar monsters and recurring characters. Yes, Pyramid Head and the nurses are some of the biggest icons in gaming, but it’s really the series’ unique blend of Nietzschean psychology and moody atmosphere that makes it stand out. That’s why it’s only natural that fans would also search for the same eerie vibes in other media.

And while I’ll admit that there’s nothing out there that feels exactly like the Silent Hill games (even the adaptations can’t quite replicate the surreal solitude of the source material), today I’d like to share a list attempting to answer one of the most common questions asked by new Silent Hill fans: are there any movies that feel like Silent Hill?

For the purposes of this list,...

Box Office: ‘Despicable Me 4’ Rules July 4th With $120M Opening, ‘MaXXXine’ Scares Up $7M-$8M
Image
Illumination and Universal’s Minions franchise isn’t getting any worse for the wear as Despicable Me 4 rules the Fourth of July box office with an estimated five-day opening of $120 million, including a three-day weekend haul of $72.4 million.

That’s in line with expectations and a strong start for the fourth outing in the main franchise, and the sixth in the Despicable Me/Minions series, which ranks as the top-grossing animated franchise of all time.

The first Despicable Me opened over the July 9-11 weekend in 2010 to $56 million. The series then shifted its release earlier and became a Fourth of July staple. 2013’s Despicable Me 2 likewise opened on July 3, a Wednesday, and posted a five-day debut of $143 million. That was followed by a $120 million five-day holiday start for the threequel in 2017.

In the first Despicable Me movie in seven years, Gru — the world’s favorite supervillain-turned-Anti-Villain League-agent voiced...

“Seems like a desperate attempt to revive MCU”: Next Avengers Movie Will Piss Off a Lot of Fans With One Massive Update
Image
“The Truth is… I Am Iron Man”. The iconic line for Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark kick-started the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the first Iron Man movie back in 2008. Ever since the franchise evolved and expanded beyond comprehension and currently stands as one of the most star-studded ones in Hollywood. However, the biggest pull and win for this new connected universe truly came with 2012’s The Avengers and its subsequent iterations.

A screen-grab of the original six Avengers from The Avengers (2012) | Marvel Entertainment

In the span of its first decade or so of existence, its Infinity Saga, as termed officially, featured four Avengers movies including the whopping acclaimed cinematic experience of Avengers: Endgame. The next five years, unfortunately, have settled for a dry spell of any major crossover of that level, barring Spider-Man: No Way Home. Amid all of this, the latest scoop may rather hint at further disappointment despite its positive nature,...

Paris Hilton Crashes Vampire Weekend’s Coachella Set to Play Cornhole
Image
One second, Vampire Weekend are performing a 30-minute jam of “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” with Goose, the next, they’re bringing out Paris Hilton for a game of cornhole. The random cameo from the reality TV starlet occurred during Vampire Weekend’s surprise Saturday afternoon performance at Coachella.

To close the set, the veteran indie rockers performed a 15-minute honky tonk mashup dubbed “Cocaine Cowboys,” which featured performances of their own song “Married in a Gold Rush” alongside covers of “All the Gold In California” (Gatlin Brothers Band), “Sin City” (Flying Burrito Brothers), “Cumberland Blues” (The Grateful Dead), and “Possum” (Phish). During the medley, Vampire Weekend invited two special guests to the stage for a game of cornhole: Hilton and an Abraham Lincoln impersonator. For her part, Hilton said she hadn’t play cornhole since her mid-2000s reality show The Simply Life and promptly missed her two attempts.

Dark Sky Films: ‘Wake Wood’, ‘Eaten Alive’ & ‘Sleep Tight’ Now Streaming on Screambox!

Yet another batch of Dark Sky Films titles have made their way onto Screambox, joining previously dropped classics Willow Creek, Minor Premise, and The Deeper You Dig (details), as well as Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary, Landlocked, and Possum (details), Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer 1 & 2, and Emelie (details), and even Stake Land, Summer of Blood, & Bitter Feast (details).

First, from master of horror Tobe Hooper, Eaten Alive has now taken a bite out of Screambox.

The ’70s killer crocodile flick features The Addams Family‘s Carolyn Jones, a pre-Freddy-Krueger Robert Englund, and Halloween‘s Kyle Richards.

In the film, “Deep in the swamps of Louisiana, disfigured psychotic Judd (Neville Brand) manages a sleazy, decaying motel. Upon learning that one of his guests is a prostitute, he promptly impales her with a pitchfork and tosses her to the crocodile that stalks the nearby waters. This is just the first in a series of slayings,...

Dark Sky Films Classics ‘Stake Land’, ‘Summer of Blood’, & ‘Bitter Feast’ Now Streaming on Screambox!
Willow Creek (2013)
Yet another trio of Dark Sky Films titles have made their way onto Screambox, joining previously dropped classics Willow Creek, Minor Premise, and The Deeper You Dig (details), as well as Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary, Landlocked, and Possum (details), and even Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer 1 & 2 and Emelie (details).

All of them have a taste for blood…

First, Stake Land, the Jim Mickle-directed vampire classic that set the stage for his cannibal horror We Are What We Are and the Netflix series “Sweet Tooth”.

In the film, “America has fallen. A vampiric scourge sweeps the nation, turning brother on brother and parent on child as the blood-hungry beasts take deeper and deeper hold upon the land. It’s hard for the survivors to know whether to be more afraid of the creatures themselves or the violent religious groups that have sprung up in response, but there is...

Yet another trio of Dark Sky Films titles have made their way onto Screambox, joining previously dropped classics Willow Creek, Minor Premise, and The Deeper You Dig (details), as well as Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary, Landlocked, and Possum (details).

First, the criminally underseen babysitter thriller Emelie, a taut thriller that will definitely surprise many of you.

I was blown away by Michael Thelin‘s debut feature which is highlighted by star Sarah Bolger, who delivers a chilling performance that would make any parent check twice before hiring a new babysitter.

In the film… “After their regular babysitter Maggie can’t make it, the Thompson family turns to her friend Anna to supervise their children while the parents celebrate their anniversary. At first, Anna seems like a dream come true to the kids, allowing them to eat extra cookies and play with things that are usually off-limits. Still, as her behavior becomes increasingly odd,...

Dark Sky Films Gems Join Screambox – ‘Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary’, ‘Landlocked’, and ‘Possum’
Willow Creek (2013)
Another trio of Dark Sky Films titles have made their way onto Screambox, joining previously dropped classics Willow Creek, Minor Premise, and The Deeper You Dig (more details).

Place your bets on who will win in Dark Sky Films’ Ghost Killers vs Bloody Mary, now streaming on Screambox.

Fabrício Bittar’s horror-comedy tells of four YouTubers with expertise in paranormal activity who attempt to tackle the mystery of a ghost that haunts a high school bathroom. This film is batshit insane.

The film is being sold in the spirit of Peter Jackson’s earliest work, “An exercise in hilariously bad taste, featuring gratuitous sex, violence, profanity and one seriously pissed-off ghost.”

The feature directorial debut of Paul Owens, Landlocked is a creative new horror movie that incorporates actual footage in the form of childhood home movies.

Now streaming on Screambox, Landlocked‘s use of a family’s original home videos...

Possum Ending Explained: Master Of Puppets
Image
Warning: This article discusses difficult subject matter including sexual assault and child abuse.

I first learned about Matthew Holness' "Possum" when it was seeking distribution during the American Film Market. Hundreds of titles were on display, but everyone was talking about a black and white poster of a bed with a bag on it ... but the bag and gigantic spider legs sticking out of it. The image sparked a visceral reaction from anyone who walked by, but few could have predicted the abject terror that would come with "Possum." The closest genre to define "Possum" is a psychological thriller, but it's filled with jarring imagery, effective jump scares, and a story that crawls under your skin — and stays there.

"Possum" is based on Holness' short story of the same name featured in "The New Uncanny: Tales of Unease," and incorporates Sigmund Freud's theories on the uncanny. Utilizing a filmmaking...

From a performance last week on the CMT Music Awards to fronting Lynyrd Skynyrd on their own “Tuesday’s Gone,” Jelly Roll has been making it a habit of stealing the show. Jelly Roll anchors the latest round of performers added to the show and will join Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley,...

Image
Stars: Nobuse Jr., Malachi Pullar-Latchman, Hannah Traylen, Ross Coles, Larry Lamb, Samantha Bond, James Faulkner, James Lance, Louis Walwyn | Written by Ray Bogdanovich, Dean Lines | Directed by Tommy Boulding

Hounded, also released as Hunted outside the UK, is the latest cinematic variation on The Most Dangerous Game. It takes elements from films like Don’t Breathe, Nefarious, and Turkey Shoot then adds the very upper-class British tradition of fox hunting. The result is a not-so-subtle survival horror metaphor for class warfare.

Leon and his brother Chaz along with their partners Vix and Tod have a good racket going on. Gregory, the local antique dealer hires them to rob his own customers. It’s good money for a quick in and out, grabbing the one item of value he wants.

Having made enough to send Chaz to college, Leon is ready to retire. The others however want one more job to set themselves up.

Undisputed Horror Legend Garth Marenghi Is Making His Grand Comeback With TerrorTome
Image
Garth Marenghi fans rejoice! The good author is back at it with a newly announced hardcover, ebook and audiobook release titled "Garth Marenghi's Terrortime." I can sense some of you are politely nodding your heads and shining a "I'm happy that you're happy" smile and otherwise have no idea what I'm talking about. To you good people, I humbly request you seek out the early aughts bit of British weirdness that goes by the name of "Garth Marenghi's Darkplace."

Marenghi is a fictional horror writer played by Matthew Holness whose books are so popular that he's given his own TV show with total creative freedom. Of course he directs and stars despite not having any experience at either and the resulting show is so bad that it never found and audience and was thought lost to time. In the early 2000s, Garth salvages the 20-year-old footage and finally gives it the release it deserves.

Silva Screen Releases Two New Lps From The BBC Archive
By Darren Allison

On the 31st January, Silva Screen released two excellent BBC vinyl albums from the 1970s. Firstly, Paddy Kingsland was the first Radiophonic composer to see a solo release of his compositions, even though he’s not name-checked on the front of the sleeve. “Fourth Dimension”, first released in 1973, showcased Kingsland’s theme tunes for television and radio while at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The recordings feature a rock-style backing band and synthesisers including the Vcs 3 and “Delaware” Synthi 100, and the track “Reg” from the album was also released as the B side to the 1973 single release of the iconic Doctor Who theme tune. Kingsland remained at the workshop for 21 years, leaving in 1981, during which time he composed music for much loved TV shows The Changes, Doctor Who and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy among others. Paddy Kingsland is now part of the newly-revived independent “Radiophonic Workshop...

Romola Garai
‘Amulet’: Film Review
Romola Garai
Actress Romola Garai makes a distinctive feature directorial debut with “Amulet,” even if this upscale horror drama is ultimately more impressive in the realm of style than substance. It’s some style, though: She hasn’t just created a stylish potboiler, but a densely textured piece that makes for a truly arresting viewing experience to a point. A shame then that the film succumbs somewhat to the more pretentious and silly aspects of Garai’s initially cryptic puzzle of a script.

“Amulet” is definitely the kind of joint that will irk mainstream genre fans for being too “arty,” and for not pouring on the kills or gore (though neither are entirely lacking). Still, more adventurous types will grok the distinctive vision on display in this split-level narrative of terrors bred by both war and more unearthly evils.

It takes a while before we get our basic bearings in the early going,...

Possum Coming to DVD on February 12th from Dark Sky Films
If you missed Matthew Holness' Possum last year (and word on the horror street is that it was one of the creepier releases of 2018), then you may want to circle February 12th on your calendar, because that is when Possum will be released on DVD from Dark Sky Films.

Press Release: A man trying to escape his past finds his past continually chasing him down in Possum, a chilling new horror film featuring a "quiet storm" of a lead performance by Mission: Impossible's Sean Harris. The film arrives on DVD from Dark Sky Films on February 12, 2019.

Philip, a disgraced children's puppeteer, returns to his dilapidated childhood home and lecherous stepfather, Maurice. Philip is intent on destroying "Possum,"a hideously malformed spider-puppet he carries with him in a brown leather case. Unfortunately, and horrifically, Possum refuses to be abandoned.

Philip's mind is flooded with painful half-memories and nightmarish visions,...

The Top 20 Horror Movies Of 2018: New Nightmares To Old Legends (Part I)
Despite horror’s thematic binding to society’s most current fears – this a year of parental devastation and horrors inside family units – my twenty favorite genre titles from 2018 still revel in variety: arachnid puppets, Nazi experiments, zombie musicals alike. Such morbid creativity would stick out like a sore severed thumb any other year, but today? You could drown out aforementioned absurdity with Nicolas Cage’s descent into occult revenge madness alone.

As I said, it’s been a wild year for horror – a damn fine one at that.

My ranking comes after killing many darlings, given my final tally of 118 seen horror films this year. Dig deeper, past these listed twenty, and you’ll still find plenty of gold worth mining. The following treasures just shine a little brighter and demand more attention. Feature debuts, streaming darlings, mainstream nightmares, all the works. It’s time for another end of year horror countdown,...

Possum is the debut feature film from writer/director Matthew Holness, co-creator and writer/star of the cult TV series Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace. Starring Sean Harris and Alun Armstrong, Possum is a distinctive psychological thriller which pays homage to the British horror films of the 70s. The film’s unique and stylish exploration of a man’s isolation and abandonment is accompanied by a compelling soundtrack from the legendary electronic BBC music studio The Radiophonic Workshop. The film is based on the short story Possum written by Matthew Holness and published in ‘The New Uncanny’ anthology.

Alice Lowe
Film Review: ‘Possum’
Alice Lowe
Though it originally ran for just six episodes in 2004, the U.K. TV series “Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace” — an inspired spoof of supernatural anthology shows, among other things — has acquired a still-growing cult following. Its principal collaborators have all forged interesting careers since, with two recently making their feature writing-directing debuts. Released last year, cast member Alice Lowe’s “Prevenge” was a macabre piece about a unbalanced woman who starts believing her unborn child is ordering her to kill. “Darkplace” co-creator/star Matthew Holness’ new “Possum” is also about madness, being a psychological horror in which nearly all the terrors (both seen and unseen) may simply be figments of a severely withdrawn protagonist’s haunted imagination.

In script terms, Holness straddles the line between “minimalist” and “underdeveloped.” There are times when it feels like “Possum” (named after a creepy children’s rhyme much recited here) would have had its slender...

November 2018 VOD & Digital Releases Include The Nun, Searching, The Predator, The House With A Clock In Its Walls
Happy Halloween, everyone! While I know it’s a bittersweet feeling that our favorite holiday is finally upon us, that doesn’t mean we have to bid the horror genre farewell any time soon. In fact, there are a ton of great genre films hitting VOD and a variety of digital platforms throughout the month of November, which should help with the sting of it no longer officially being the spooky season.

November’s digital releases kick off on Friday with Possum, Welcome to Mercy, and Monster Party, and then just a few days later, get ready for Death House, Kin, The Heretics, Beyond the Sky, and Blood, Sweat and Terrors on November 6th. One week later, the cyber thriller Searching hits various platforms (and is definitely worth a watch), and there are a few more titles making their digital debuts that day as well: Blue My Mind, Lasso, and Bloody Ballet.

Possum Review
Matthew Holness taps into psychological horror greatness with a cerebral picture that will lay eggs in your brain.

Possum has all of the ingredients that you hope for from a debut horror picture. It tells a disturbing story about a man returning to his childhood home and caught in a tug of war with an alluring spider puppet. Possum throws its audience into a twisted puzzle and relishes the ensuing confusion. It’s a phenomenal debut film as writer-director for Matthew Holness (best known for acting in frekaing Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace), who balances a complex tightrope between tones.

Even though Possum presents a highly stylized story with plenty of disturbing and confounding visuals, this is really an internal tale about repression, living with past grief, and the power of guilt when it festers and isn’t confronted. It also eloquently explores deeper material like whether it’s possible to...

Exclusive Interview: Matthew Holness talks gothic fairytales, creepy puppets and all-things Possum
At FrightFest way back in August 2017, comedian-turned-filmmaker Matthew Holness showed up with a sneak-peek clip from his feature debut, the little-known-about Possum. Before it played he gave a little intro to the crowd, and made it very, very, very clear that, contrary to what the crowd knew him for it wouldn’t be funny. Not even a little bit. And he wasn’t joking. Despite only being 60 seconds long, that clip was the scariest thing that played all weekend.

Fast-forward over a year later, and Possum is finished and doing the festival rounds, prepping for a big UK release just in time for Halloween. And those extra 84 minutes are just as downright freaky as what we saw all those months ago. So naturally we sat down with Mr Holness himself to ask not only how he did it, but why. You can read our glowing review of the film here.

From Garth Marenghi to big-screen horror – what the ‘lost boy’ of comedy did next
Matthew Holness won the Perrier award at 26, made a much-loved series for Channel 4 and then … almost nothing. Now, at 43, he has made his first film, Possum, inspired by Jimmy Savile. And, no, it’s not a comedy

Matthew Holness has been telling people for years that Possum isn’t a comedy. “It’s not remotely funny,” he said when it was announced. “It’s not a funny film,” he reiterated before its premiere. Yet some people, “mainly comedy fans on Twitter”, still haven’t got the message.

“I think they anticipate – would prefer – a Garth Marenghi film,” he says. “But thankfully the audience members who actually shell out for a ticket appear to know what they’re in for. Within reason …”...

Exclusive: We reveal the terrifying poster for Matthew Holness’ Possum
One of the standout films from this year’s FrightFest was the debut feature film from writer/director Matthew Holness, who you’ll know as the co-creator/writer/star of Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace. It’s exactly the sort of film we love to champion, a labour of love with an assured hand and a truly unique take on the horror genre.

We called it ‘A quietly nasty gem that’ll make you re-think British horror altogether’ in our 4 star review of the film from FrightFest. We also spoke to Odd Studios’ Adam Johansen on the incredible creature design for the film, it’s an intriguing deep dive into a side of the business which sadly often goes overlooked. You can check that out here.

The film will be released in UK cinemas on the 26th of October. Here’s the nightmare-inducing new poster.

Synopsis

Starring Sean Harris and Alun Armstrong,...

Gaspar Noé’s Climax leads the charge in the FrightFest 2018 line-up
This year’s FrightFest will kick off on 23rd August with Jenn Wexler’s post-modern slasher The Ranger (making her the first ever female director to open the festival) and close on 27th August with Gaspar Noé’s insane surprise Cannes-favourite Climax. And considering 2018’s London edition is backed by Arrow Video as the main sponsor, fans can expect even more top-shelf genre fun than ever before. Hold on to your butts.

The four horseman of the fest-pocalypse, Greg Day, Alan Jones, Paul McEvoy and Ian Rattray reunite again to take over the Cineworld Leicester Square and Prince Charles Cinema, marking FrightFest’s 19th year on the trot celebrating horror in London’s film centre. And the line-up is certainly a fan-pleaser, with over 60 premieres, plenty involving former festival favourites.

Sticking out on first glance is Pascal ‘Martyrs’ Laugier’s latest slice of French extremity Incident In A Ghost Land,...
