Far better than expected homage to the old-school genre efforts

After gathering a collection of sacred relics, a group of occultists gathers together to distribute the relics into their own personal collection, only to discover that the intrusion of the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh who was robbed has brought his mummy back to life to carry out a bloodsoaked rampage of revenge against them.

This was a rather enjoyable genre effort. One of the strongest aspects on display is the fun way this goes about showcasing the setup and need for revenge that the mummy carries out. With the typical setup involving the usual desecration of the tomb and pilfering the goods from its crypt that produces the series of trinkets that falls into their hands and providing the list of victims to stalk and kill off, the film falls right in line with the numerous other exploits in the genre with a believable setup that works quite nicely overall. That, naturally, leads into the highly enjoyable series of encounters throughout here of the mummy rampaging around the city killing off all those who have the sacred objects with them. Resorting to some generally fun if brief encounters showing his strength and cruelty in just barging into a location and chopping them to pieces or wrapping them up in mummified gauze before killing them, the attacks are rather fun and cheesy with a far more lively pace than expected given the high number of confrontations throughout here. Getting some decent gore and a solid look for the titular mummy, these generate a lot to like overall. There are a few minor issues to be had here. One of the most obvious issues here is that there's some getting used to the film's habit of scene transitions using the comic book panel pages tactic. This comes off rather flimsy and cheaply with the way this occurs as it keeps flashing up after several minutes on-screen to go to a new shot or section of the city which comes off rather distracting at first before you realize the technique is going to be more common throughout the rest of the film. Given that some of these are quite avant-garde and overly weird for no reason that makes it even harder to get into these scenes and makes for an odd time getting into the format. As well, there's also a rather weird issue with the way the police investigation is handled in that it doesn't seem logical for actual cops in this instance to go through the steps they do here. The fact that it takes them nearly an hour and multiple murders of the same method to even think that there's a connection to everything is entirely ludicrous for people in this situation as they're both considered rather prominent detectives with a lot of experience. The supernatural and telekinetic prowess here is obviously glossed over but to still not notice the connection about the rampage is the key factor, which along with the overall cheap look and feel are what holds this one back.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Language and Violence.

    Chill out Mummy

Well that would not be the best title for a movie like this, now would it? First things first though: suspending your disbelief is one thing, but you have to really dig the genre and be aware that this is really low budget. So much so, that you should be aware that the production design and props and all things the movie is using, will not be of the best quality.

Still considering the money they had I reckon it is quite decent. Also the nods to comics and older classic movies with scene changing editing techniques that you might fall in love with - if you are open to it of course.

But overall there is a lack of many things and the flaws most likely than not will become apparent. Still even the actors try their best so you can't really blame anyone - be aware of what you are watching and maybe don't watch this movie at all, if it isn't for you.

    Terrible Cheap and Cheesy!

Honestly I hated it so much, that I couldn't make it to the end, and I love terrible films. The quality was worse than a Sci-fi original. It honestly looks very student made.

At first I thought the comic effects was cute, and a nod to the older horror monster films, but they use it far too often, coupled with the poor editing that makes switching from one scene from another harsh, and really noticeable. The film suffered from its over use. There was a lot of pointless scenes they could have edited out to make the look smoother.

The over use of the old style cheesy music was too much too, it would have been better if they used it as just a nod. Rather than nearly all of the time.

Dennis Vincent is a dedicated man

Rage of the Mummy is, at best, a movie honoring this classic genre. Vincent obviously loves these movies and kudos to him for creating this labor of love. With that said, the budget was minuscule and it shows. Also, I am always wary when the same person directs, writes, acts and produces a movie not necessarily due to budget restrictions, think Tarantino, but because that is a sign of no compromise. Compounding this is that Vincent has 10! additional credits, 10! Collaboration would have helped in this case. Overall, I really liked the movie. It certainly kept my attention. The animated transition pieces were an innovative way to tell big chunks of story. They were just clumsy looking, the composition was just off. The acting as expected but the sound was terrible. The makeup laughable...I could go on. But the one thing that was over the top awful is, unfortunately, central to the entire move. The damn Mummy costume was atrocious. What kind of mummy is wrapped in a 2 piece set? And how do wrapped strips end up as BAGGY and ill fitting it looks like the Mummy lost a lot of weight and needs a tailor! And boots! On this costume issue, I must point out that a zipper is visible down the back of the Mummy in the original so I realize the difficulty but it at least it was one piece!

    A+ for effort

It was kinda cute like something a filmmaker would make in their early 20s. It was fun and charming. Not very good compared to even SyFy movies but it was fun. The mummy mask was great and the comic book style was a good nod to tails from the crypt.

    • Goofs
During one scene, the cult-leader holds up a small jackal-headed artifact and says "Ah, Anubis, the Golden Jackal". Rather than a depiction of the God Anubis this appears more in the style of a Canopic jar featuring the lesser-Diety Duamutef, one of the four sons of Horus. The four Canopic jars were traditionally used to store the organs during the Mummification process, each one would represent one of the four sons of Horus; Imsety, Hapy, Duamutef and Qebehsenuef, and Duamutef would contain the stomach of the Mummified body.
