Santa Claus won’t be the only mythical figure sliding down chimneys this holiday season! John Woo is getting in on the home invasion action now that Lionsgate is bringing Silent Night to PVOD on December 19. Please buy extra milk and cookies this year. I hear Woo likes Macaroons and Snickerdoodles. While that’s probably inaccurate, he strikes me as a man of taste. It’s been 20 years since Woo’s last American movie, so this is a big deal.
“From legendary director John Woo and the producer of John Wick comes the gritty revenge tale of a tormented father (Joel Kinnaman) who witnesses his young son die when caught in a gang’s crossfire on Christmas Eve,” reads the official synopsis. “While recovering from a wound that costs him his voice, Kinnaman makes vengeance his life’s mission and embarks on a punishing training regimen in order to avenge his son’s death.

Mexico’s Mónica Lozano, producer of Alejandro González Iñarritu’s “Amores Perros” and Eugenio Derbéz’s “Instructions Not Included,” has boarded “Cepeda,” an envelope-pushing Mexico-set procedural, turning on a Mexican cop who’s an Indigenous woman and great at her job.
Development over the last two years has been financed by Acuña’s Chile-based Promocine. Put back, however, by the pandemic, the project is now set up at Lozano’s Mexico City production house Alebrije Producciones, one of Mexico’s most active forces in international production, behind Carlos Carrera’s Quirino Award winner “Ana y Bruno” and Fox’s “Run Coyote Run.”
“Cepeda” is written by Chile’s Julio Rojas, who has shot to global fame as creator of Podcast phenom “Caso 63.” Rojas also served as story editor on Lucía Puenzo’s “La Jauría,” and writer on Pablo Fendrik’s “El Refugio” and Matías Bize’s “The Life of Fish,...

Action legend John Woo's new film, Silent Night, is a dialogue-free action movie that follows a grieving father seeking revenge for his son's death in the underworld. The lack of dialogue in Silent Night allows the visuals, music, and action to convey the story and emotions of the characters. Lead star Joel Kinnaman sees the absence of dialogue as a challenge that requires him to rely on his acting skills and portray emotions solely through his eyes and actions.
Seminal movie director John Woo is back in the first trailer for his dialogue-free action outing, Silent Night. Coming courtesy of Lionsgate, Silent Night is all set to be led by The Suicide Squad star Joel Kinnaman, with the movie all about action as it takes a dialogue-free approach to the story of a grieving father who goes into the underworld to avenge his young son's death. The full cast of the Netflix series The Five Juanas features a plethora of telenovela veterans as well as some actors who've appeared in popular English-language movies. The series follows five women, all named Juana, who meet by chance at a Cancun resort and discover they're connected by an identical fish-shaped birthmark. The twisted tale that follows sees the Juanas uniting to uncover the truth about their parentage and take revenge on the man who fathered them all: politician Simón Marroquín. The scandalous secrets lurking within the dark pasts of the Juanas carry the momentum of this dramatic narrative, but its most powerful tool is its engaging cast of characters.
The Five Juanas is a re-imagining of Las Juanas, a 1997 Colombian miniseries by Bernardo Romero Pereiro, which he remade for Mexican television in 2004. It’s common for such series to be retold, and several telenovelas have been remade for American audiences.
