This is an enjoyable and spooky ghost story, also standing in as a timepiece to late 1980's China (story takes place in Beijing). It A successfully uses atmospherics to add to the plot. On a film shoot to record the sound of the lead actress walking up a flight of stairs, the sound engineer notices voices in the background. The lead actress, who is psychic, also picks it up and discover a sealed subbasement which was the site of a murder, concealed to appear like a suicide. The twist ending allowed the entire movie to get past government censors which do not allow for supernatural stories in the media.
