Sony delivered a trilogy of flops after veering off course with its Spider-Man Universe. Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter proved to the studio execs that every superhero project won’t work at the box office.

At the Bank of America Conference held on September 4, 2025, Sony’s CEO, Ravi Ahuja, claimed the real reason behind Ssmu failing [via The Wrap]:

There was a period of time where anything superhero was almost guaranteed to do well. I think [the bar] for superhero movies, it was relatively low. In the mid-2010s pretty much all of them would do incredible business, but now even superhero movies have to have a degree of originality.

They have to add something different.

Despite agreeing to share Spider-Man with Marvel Studios after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 served as an abrupt end to that franchise, Sony Pictures decided to forge ahead with its own slate of Marvel movies.

It's hard to blame the studio, as the genre had become a guaranteed money-maker. That was apparent from Venom grossing $856 million in 2018 despite largely negative reviews. However, with Avi Arad calling the shots, Sony hasn't exactly delivered quality comic book adaptations.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Venom: The Last Dance were middling efforts in the eyes of many critics and fans, but the likes of Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter were outright disasters.

A box office flop and one of the worst-reviewed superhero movies of all time, Madame Web is destined to be long remembered...for all the wrong reasons. However, there's one thing Sony Pictures' Marvel Comics adaptation did get right.

We are, of course, talking about the costumes worn by Julia Cornwall (Sydney Sweeney), Anya Corazón (Isabela Merced), and Mattie Franklin (Celeste O'Connor).

More never-before-seen suit photos have been revealed today, featuring the trio suited up, both with and without their masks. There are some minor flaws—Julia's costume would have benefited from lenses over her eyes—but it's criminal that these didn't get more than a few seconds of screentime in Madame Web.

Maybe it’s true what they say about real life-or-death stakes not applying to superheroes. The past couple of years have looked pretty deadly for the once-ubiquitous American superhero movie, with just two such films placing on the list of 2024’s top-grossing movies in the US, and three in 2023. More than the lack of hits – Deadpool & Wolverine certainly made enough on its own to encourage another decade of team-ups – the genre has been threatened by a growing number of flops. Sequels to blockbusters like Joker and Aquaman nosedived from their predecessors. Would-be franchise starters like The Flash, Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter failed to spark any interest. Even a Marvel movie literally called The Marvels underperformed.

As Rachel Brosnahan makes her Dcu debut as Lois Lane in Superman, she’s prepared to stand by her franchise.

The 2x Golden Globe winner recently took aim at fellow actors who “complain about” their superhero movies after receiving negative reviews, ahead of the July 11 premiere of the James Gunn flick.

After Amanda Seyfried explained in their Interview Magazine conversation that “you can feel it when people are doing it with passion and grace and curiosity,” Brosnahan said, ‘I don’t know why people say, ‘Yes’ only to then turn around and complain about it.”

“Look, I don’t want to s— on other actors, but there was a minute where it was cool to not like superhero movies and to look back on projects like this and pooh-pooh them,” added Brosnahan. “Do it or don’t do it, and then stand by it.”

Sony's Spider-Man films were, on the whole, a pretty solid group. They got much better once they finally accepted assistance from Marvel Studios, beginning with Spider-Man: Homecoming. But those Spider-verse movies without Spidey? I mean, the first Venom was okay, but after that? Yeesh. And they got yeeshier as they went along.

Let me put it this way. The reputation of these movies is so bad that Netflix has been essentially dumping them onto their schedule. Venom: The Last Dance debuted on February 25th with little advance notice at all. The streaming giant did the same with Madame Web nearly a year ago, on May 14th. Both films performed much better on streaming than they did at movie theaters.

A24 has great news for fans of Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. The two actors are uniting in an upcoming film, and the release date has officially been announced.

Per Deadline, The Materialists has been dated for a nationwide theatrical release on June 13, 2025. Along with featuring MCU stars Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, the movie stars Dakota Johnson (Madame Web), Marin Ireland (The Dark and the Wicked), Dasha Nekrasova (Succession), and Louisa Jacobson (The Gilded Age). It is written, directed, and produced by Celine Song, while David Hinojosa produces for 2Am alongside Killer Films.

Kraven the Hunter has been another critical and commercial disaster for Sony Pictures, and there are many moments in the movie which became memes the instant it was released last month.

The fact Sony has delivered Marvel movies bad enough that they're the subject of ridicule more than scorn says a lot, and with Kraven the Hunter now available on Digital, another "Wtf?" discovery has been made.

As you may recall, Madame Web was widely criticised for its appalling use of Adr. The lips of many actors, though mostly Tahar Rahim's Ezekiel Sims, didn't match what they were saying and Sony seemingly came up with a unique solution for that in Kraven the Hunter.

The 45th Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies) will be held on March 1, 2025, to recognize the worst films of 2024. The nominees were originally set to be announced on January 16, but due to wildfires in Southern California, the announcement was delayed several times, eventually being revealed on January 21.

The nominees were chosen by 1,202 members of the Golden Raspberry Foundation, including movie fans, critics, and journalists. This year, many comic book adaptations received nominations, such as ‘The Crow,’ ‘Madame Web,’ ‘Joker: Folie à Deux,’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter.’

Several well-known actors, including Ariana DeBose, Cate Blanchett, and Joaquin Phoenix, were also mentioned, with Jon Voight getting a nod for his roles in four films. 2024 was really bad for superhero adaptations considering that the movies received eighteen nominations overall.
