For an animated show that represents one of the most uncompromising artistic visions ever produced for children's TV, "Batman: The Animated Series" sure had to jump through a lot of hoops for its network. Fox censorship meant there were nine things "Batman: The Animated Series" couldn't do, though the writers frequently found ways of circumventing the network's dictates, such as when "The New Batman Adventures" (as the show was later renamed) used Scarecrow to pull one over on the censors.
It's a testament to the talent of the writers, artists, and voice actors that they were able to make such a seminal piece of work in "B:tas" despite being somewhat hindered in their mission to tell more mature stories. Often, however, the writers were extremely hampered in their efforts to craft particular storylines. After all, it wasn't just the censors...

Throughout the vast history of DC Comics, there has been a plethora of reboots to the canon, and exponentially more additions to character's development and backstories. With stories and characters that aren't too far from being one hundred years old, they're bound to get a bit convoluted. Crisis on Infinite Earths, Infinite Crisis, New 52, and Doomsday Clock all rebooted the DC Comics universe to some degree. Multiverse stories that take place outside the main universe and Earth Prime are also considered canon because the multiverse is considered canon. You dive too far into that, and it can definitely become confusing.
Mark Waid is here to set the record straight.
In a new series called New History of the DC Universe, Mark Waid is going to establish exactly what is canon to the heroes we know and love over at DC. He sounds like he's incredibly excited about the project too.

Justice League Unlimited was a show that introduced whole generations of viewers to some iconic versions of characters like Batman, Superman, and of course, Green Lantern. The latter of the three was allegedly added to the group instead of Hal Jordan to add some diversity to it. John Stewart remains one of most quintessential members of the Justice League, almost making it into the Dceu as well

However, as is the case with a lot of things in the Dcau, a slew of things made it into the comics, especially when it comes to the history of the character. The animated series was where John Stewart actually got his background as a marine, which became one of the most significant aspects of the character, even in the comics.

The season 3 finale of Invincible was a continuous punch to the face and it ended with an onslaught of head-butts. If you’ve seen the episode, you understand the reference. If you haven’t, what are you doing?! Stop reading and go watch it! For everyone else, let’s talk about what happened at the end of this episode.
*** Warning! Spoilers For The Season 3 Finale Of Invincible And Possibly Season 4 ***
First thing's first, let's talk about Mark Grayson's battle with Conquest. Mark defeated his new foe with a major assist from Atom Eve. It was the fight to end all fights and it looked like Mark had killed his first Viltrumite. Being the smart person that he is, however, he asks Cecil to see Conquest's body to make sure that he is dead. Cecil shows him the body and Mark tells him to burn it. Sadly, Cecil is a liar.

The "Bat-embargo." If you're a fan of the classic DC Animated Universe (Dcau), the words probably feel like a chill in the night. If you're not, then let me explain.
See, DC Comics can be fickle about which of its characters can appear on television, and where. During the 2000s, this mostly impacted Batman and his supporting cast. Kevin Conroy's Batman was a regular on "Justice League Unlimited," which aired alongside the unconnected cartoon "The Batman," and Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins" marked the return of the Dark Knight after his 1990s silver screen fall.
Reportedly, then-dc Comics President Paul Levitz was worried that kids would be confused about all of these Batmen. How would they be able to tell multiple versions of the same characters apart when they were all appearing at the same time? Hence, the Bat-embargo came into effect around 2004 (when "The Batman" debuted and "Justice League...

A slew of animated superhero shows in the 90s came to define how the characters were remembered by an entire generation. Be it, Superman: The Animated Series, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, or X-Men: The Animated Series, these versions of the characters greatly influenced later iterations of them, something that fans have enjoyed a lot through the years.

It's hard to imagine this now, considering the stranglehold that superhero films and television series have had on Hollywood over the past decade and a half, but in the early 2000s, developing a show about a superhero -- even a top-tier one like Superman -- was not guaranteed to be a slam dunk. It's a testament to the charming, borderline addictive nature of "Smallville" that it not only existed on the fledgling CW network, but thrived there for 10 seasons from 2001 to 2011.
In telling the story of Clark Kent's (Tom Welling) teen and young adult years growing up in Smallville, the frothy superhero drama introduced audiences to a crop of upcoming actors who made their mark both on "Smallville" and beyond. While some are still acting to this day, others have taken interesting career -- and personal life -- turns over the years that may surprise fans of the show. Here's the main cast of "Smallville,...

In 2024, Prime Video released Batman: The Caped Crusader, reimagining the DC hero's mythos through the lens of Golden Age crime Noir. Casting Hamish Linklater as the voice of Bruce Wayne, the series has led fans on a tour of different but familiar versions of classic DC characters. From supernatural horror to Golden Age crime capers, the series proved to fans that the latest incarnation of the hero is a great one.
Batman: The Caped Crusader brings classic DC characters to life in a new light, giving them fresh designs, new motivations, and an all-new cast of voice actors. The series does a great job of walking the line between honoring its source material while also putting a new spin on Gotham and its residents. Fans of old-school crime movies and Golden Age DC have plenty to enjoy in the latest Batman animated show.

Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when "Avatar: The Last Airbender" premiered in 2005. Since then, animation hasn't been the same. The Nickelodeon cartoon, as created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, takes place in a fantasy world inspired by Asian culture and mythology. At the center of its story is Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen), the latest incarnation of the Avatar and, as such, the only living being capable of wielding all four elements and stopping the evil Fire Lord Ozai before he can conquer the world.
It didn't take long for "Avatar: The Last Airbender" to set itself apart from other action-heavy animated shows in its day on its way to becoming one of the best and most unique American cartoons of all time. Alongside "Teen Titans," "Avatar" helped popularize anime-inspired cartoons in the West and started discussions among...

The third season of Invincible is off and running on Prime Video, and the reviews have been glowing. This animated adaptation of Robert Kirkman's superhero comic book is hard-hitting, funny, brutal and more complex than you might think at first glance. There are a ton of characters to follow, each with their own struggles and backstories. The show is only getting more narratively ambitious as it goes, serving up meaty character drama in between bone-crunching fights.
Season 3 will run through next month, but you might already be jonzing for more shows like Invincible. If so, you're in luck, because there are a lot of options. Here are some other series — both animated and live-action, some about superheroes and some not — that deliver some of what Invincible delivers:
The Boys season 4 on Prime Video | Invincible 1. The Boys (Prime Video)
Prime Video is the premiere streaming service for ultra-violent, original superhero shows.

The DC brand has seemingly struggled with its live-action department, especially in terms of the now-defunct Dceu. But on the animation front, it has been a very different story. Bruce Timm, who spearheaded the Dcau, starting with the ’90s Batman: The Animated Series, also contributed to the creation of Justice League Unlimited.

As we build towards DC Studios' highly-anticipated Superman reboot, DC Comics recently announced its new "Summer of Superman" initiative, which will "celebrate the Man of Steel’s enduring legacy as a pop culture icon, and a symbol of truth, justice, and hope, and his first comic book appearance in the historic Action Comics #1 in 1938."

Back in the 2010s, superhero movies adopted the "cinematic universe" as their storytelling framework; like the comics, separate franchises with unique lead characters existed within a common setting and would cross over. In the 2020s, cape-flicks leveled up to the multiverse, where each past version of a screen superhero also exists and can interact with the current ones. It's all really an excuse for easy nostalgia plays and inside jokes, hence Michael Keaton showing up as Batman again in "The Flash." (Not that it helped the movie succeed.) Last year's "Deadpool & Wolverine" was similarly all about Disney buying out 20th Century Fox and discarding the latter studio's Marvel franchises.
For my money, only one superhero movie has used the multiverse in a way befitting true science-fiction rather than just picking and choosing favored action figures for a single play-set.

Marvel Studios has released a new TV spot for Captain America: Brave New World. A badass shot of Sam Wilson making good use of his Vibranium wings is among the never-before-seen snippets of footage from the movie included in this latest sneak peek.
Those will be what level the playing field for the character in his upcoming movie, though it would have surely made things easier had he taken the Super Soldier Serum in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier!

Iconic comic book writer Dan Slott has written titles for some of the most recognizable characters. Among them are She-Hulk (no one's written more comics about her than Slott), the Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man. The latter could be his most controversial. While this writer enjoyed everything from Amazing Spider-Man to everything he did with Otto Octavius in Superior Spider-Man, it was certainly divisive for others. Regardless of how you feel about that one, the series moved a lot of units whenever they were published.
Slott's next venture involves the most important comic book character of all time. He’s writing the Man of Steel in DC Comics' Superman Unlimited with artist Rafael Albuquerque. The esteemed writer said:

Goodbye Thanos, hello Doctor Doom. Ever since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and brought every piece of Marvel under its umbrella, nerds everywhere have been clamoring for Doctor Doom to trade punches with Iron Man. Little did they suspect the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Doom, set to be the main villain of 2026's "Avengers: Secret Wars," would be played by the same guy as Iron Man.
The MCU is all about escalation, so does that mean Doom is an even greater threat than Thanos? If the Tin Tyrant dueled the Mad Titan, who would win?
I'm calling on my man Stan: "The person who'd win in a fight is the person the script writer wants to win! These are fictitious characters! The writer can do whatever he wants with them, so stop asking those bonehead questions!"

I'm calling on my man Stan: "The person who'd win in a fight is the person the script writer wants to win! These are fictitious characters! The writer can do whatever he wants with them, so stop asking those bonehead questions!"

James Gunn has delivered a brilliant animated beginning to the Dcu with Creature Commandos. The show, as is the case with some of Gunn’s other projects, took some very obscure characters from the DC canon and thrust them into the limelight with a brilliant story and an engaging soundtrack.

James Gunn revealed that the success of X-Men ’97, according to him, was because it did not chase after trends, and instead delivered something unique, which is also something that the Dcu would like to do. However, this was the director’s justification for not reviving any of the old, non-dcu, non-dceu animated shows, such as Justice League Unlimited or Batman Beyond.

When we think of Mark Harmon, the image that instantly comes to our mind is his portrayal of the stoic and sharp-witted Leroy Jethro Gibs on NCIS. The cornerstone of one of television’s longest-running TV shows and most beloved crime drama, Harmon is best known for his effortless on-screen charm and nuanced portrayals.

Over the many years of his career, the actor has been in several TV shows and movies and even dabbled in theatre. However, there is more to his persona and career than what meets the eye. Beyond his television success, Harmon once even donned the mantle of DC’s Superman.

Warning: contains spoilers for Justice League: The Atom Project #1!
DC is embracing the Justice League’s new era, but it could end up being much darker than fans expected. Every hero on Earth is now a member of the League, creating an army of heroes. The League is also helping those who lost their powers, and as seen in Justice League: The Atom Project #1, this well-meaning initiative has the potential to go quickly off the rails.
Writer John Ridley explored Amanda Waller's rise to power in Absolute Power: Origin.
Justice League: The Atom Project #1 is written by Ryan Parrott and John Ridley and drawn by Mike Perkins. The two Atoms (Ray Palmer and Ryan Choi) are heading up the Atom Project, which helps people whose powers were stolen by Amanda Waller’s Amazos army. Warning: contains spoilers for Jsa #3!
DC just flipped the script on the legendary relationship between Hawkman and Hawkgirl. The saga of Hawkman and Hawkgirl has been playing out across the DC Universe for countless millennia. Throughout their various incarnations, Hawkman and Hawkgirl have traditionally been lovers, but in light of recent developments in Carter Hall’s life, a new dynamic is forming between the two heroes, as seen in Jsa #3.
Jsa #3 was written by Jeff Lemire and drawn by Diego Olortegui. The Jsa are helping Hawkman in his battle against the Demons Three. Hawkgirl, sad that she could not have done more to help Hawkman, reveals to Green Lantern Alan Scott that she and Carter “don’t have the same relationship as past Hawkmen and Hawkwomen have had.”
Traditionally, they are lovers, but since Carter found Shayera, their cycle of rebirth has been broken, and they can live normally.

Marvel and DC Comics have both cultivated fandom with a shared universe between series. This web of continuity entangles young minds, who come to see the comics not merely as pulp adventures, but gateways to a whole other world whose history they could study and master. Then, superheroes took over 21st century Hollywood by importing this same storytelling model. But the first major superhero cinematic universe debuted on the small screen, not the silver one. Yes, before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was the DC Animated Universe (Dcau). A series of interconnected cartoons with overlapping cast and crew, the Dcau ran for 14 years from 1992 to 2006.
That long run would've been impossible without the people who made these cartoons. The first Dcau cartoon, "Batman: The Animated Series," was co-created by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski. Timm's distinctive art style (like Jack Kirby meets pin-up girl posters) became the Dcau standard.

Between the DC All In Special and The New Gods series, Darkseid lore has been popping off left and right. Yet, a non-Darkseid-centric comic series has just delivered another piece of lore that redefines what fans—and even the Justice League—know about their greatest foe. This revelation could have significant implications, potentially reshaping how the League combats the forces of the New God.
Mark Waid and Dan Mora’s Justice League Unlimited #2 follows one of the team’s elite task forces as they travel to a small village in South America, where reports of winged creatures—later revealed to be Darkseid’s Parademons—are kidnapping children and taking them deep into the surrounding forests.
Among the heroes responding to this crisis are Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Martian Manhunter, Mary Marvel, Blue Beetle, Black Lightning, Star Sapphire, and Dr. Occult. With various mission objectives to fulfill, Martian Manhunter and Dr.

The two most famous teams in superhero comic books are undeniably DC's Justice League and Marvel's Avengers. But DC just changed the Justice League in a major way that has certainly left the Avengers in the dust. While the Justice League spent the last year fractured and disbanded, they've now come together stronger than ever at the end of 2024 to prove that they're the best team in comics in 2025.
The Justice League has always been one of DC's greatest teams, so it was surprising when DC launched its "Death of the Justice League" storyline before and after the events of Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths by Joshua Williamson and Daniel Sampere. A corrupted version of Pariah captured the Justice League and used them to fuel his dark army as he tried to end the Multiverse. After this event, the Justice League decided to disband, as the Titans held their own...

James Gunn's DC Universe is only starting, but there are already some seeds that could lead to a few different and groundbreaking future events that the franchise could build toward. The first movies and TV shows in the Dcu were announced in January 2023. Almost two years later, Gunn's Dcu finally started. The first two entries in the shared universe have Gunn as their main creative force. Creature Commandos, a TV-ma animated series, started the franchise, with the first of DC's upcoming movies being the one starring David Corenswet's Superman. The latter recently started its marketing campaign.

The release of the trailer for James Gunn's Superman film has set the Internet abuzz, in no small part due to its vibrant cast composed of many underrated DC characters. One standout inclusion is a long time coming, with Edi Gathegi bringing DC Comics superstar Mister Terrific to life in his first appearance on the big screen.
The Superman trailer has generated a lot of discussion for its willingness to dip into DC's more obscure cast of characters, with Krypto the Super Dog, Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Hawkgirl all given premier billing. The appearance of Mister Terrific near the trailer's end is a welcome surprise, as this marks his big-screen debut despite being a major player in DC Comics for decades.

DC’s All In initiative has brought major changes to the DC Universe, including the revival of the Justice League with a drastically expanded roster that now includes every hero on Earth, rather than the select elite it has traditionally featured. This bold decision has sparked mixed reactions from fans, with some less than thrilled by the idea—and it seems even some of the Titans aren’t entirely on board with the Justice League’s controversial new direction.
Such actions would not only damage the League’s reputation but also highlight a dangerously simplistic and punitive approach to justice.

DC Comics fans know that Superman is often considered one of the most important heroes in the publisher's history. 20 years ago, Justice League Unlimited proved why Wonder Woman’s Invisible Jet is one of her greatest assets in DC lore, despite her ability to fly on her own. The Invisible Jet has been a major part of Wonder Woman comic lore since her 1941 debut, yet viewers and readers could easily misunderstand its purpose, especially with many iterations of Wonder Woman having comparable flight abilities to Superman. Justice League Unlimited brought the iconic Jet to the DC Animated Universe, casually demonstrating why it is so invaluable to Wonder Woman in the process.
Wonder Woman’s Invisible Jet has had a wide variety of origins in DC’s mainstream continuities, as well as many more features than its signature invisibility. There's a mysterious glitch going on in the new Justice League Watchtower, and the one behind it could very well be the Eradicator, a classic Superman villain.
While he hasn't made an appearance in the story just yet, the unmistakable visor of the Eradicator can be seen on the cover for The Question: All Along the Watchtower #2 by Alex Segura, Cian Tormey, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Willie Schubert.
It's unknown exactly why the Eradicator would be trying to hack into the newly constructed Justice League Watchtower, but from looking at his history and powers, there's no denying that he'd be able to do it.

The news that Mufasa: The Lion King star Aaron Pierre will play the Dcu's John Stewart in Lanterns was met with a positive response from fans. The actor is a powerhouse talent and cemented himself as an action movie badass with Netflix's Rebel Ridge.
During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pierre was asked whether he's watched the 2011 Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds.
"I haven't seen that, no," he admitted before adding that it's "most definitely" on his to-watch list as he continues doing a deep-dive into all-things Green Lantern as preparation for his DC Studios role. While Pierre hasn't watched that movie, he is familiar with a DC property that many feel delivered the best take on John.
"I think Justice League Unlimited might have been one of my first introductions to John Stewart," the actor revealed, referring to the popular animated series which ran from 2004 to...

Morena Baccarin played an important Marvel Universe character as Vanessa, most recently in Deadpool & Wolverine, but she also played a similar role in the DC Universe. Baccarin rose to prominence with her roles in Stargate Sg-1 and the cult-hit Firefly before moving on to acclaim in Homeland. Baccarin is perfect for the DC Universe, and she has done a number of superhero voice roles, including Black Canary in Justice League Unlimited and Cheetah in Batman: The Brave and the Bold. From there, Baccarin moved into an iconic DC role in 2015.
Many actors have been in projects from both Marvel and DC even in the same year. Performers from Christian Bale to Ryan Reynolds have taken on roles from each studio with varied degrees of success. However, few seem to be as committed to the DC Universe as Baccarin, who most recently lent her voice to Batman Unburied: Fallen City.

Having already commanded the screen in this year’s hit Netflix movie Rebel Ridge, Aaron Pierre will look to do the same as John Stewart in Lanterns, the new Dcu series that James Gunn says is slated to release at some point in 2026. Before we get there, though, Pierre recently shared how he was introduced to Stewart in the first place, and it’s all thanks to a beloved animated series that’s still held up as the gold standard of superhero shows.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly about his upcoming role in Lanterns, of which he said he "can't wait to get to work" on, the 30-year-old English actor revealed that he was just a kid when he first met Green Lantern, thanks to a short-lived Cartoon Network series that only lasted 39 episodes. Perhaps it’s one you’ve heard of?
